  • When Charles Caudrelier took line honours in the Route du Rhum single handed race across the Atlantic aboard Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, Gitana 17 he had won the Ultime class also set a new race record. Meanwhile, on the vast salt flats of Lake Gairdner, South Australia, the Kiwi America’s Cup team were still hoping they could break a record too - on land. And a few days later they did.
Both were impressive achievements and both get the full treatment in this episode of OnCourse.
Plus, we take a close look under the hood in the America’s Cup to see how teams are working on their campaigns and how the inter-team argy bargy has started already.
We also get aboard the Farr X2 an exciting new 30ft pocket rocket designed for shorthanded and a new style of fully crewed racing. But, this is also a boat that got plenty of attention for all the wrong reasons earlier this year when the first boat lost its keel. We ask what has been done to ensure it can't happen again.
And as always there’s plenty in Docktalk including the link between a Soviet monster and hydrofoils.

Those ground effect aircraft with hydrofoils sound pretty interesting. Seems like a good combination in theory at least.

A very good edition with superb reporting style covering many diverse subjects and in quite some detail, all of them interesting and certainly most watchable. I am just an amateur cruiser/ racer skipper and also when not helming an enthusiastic crew/grinder/bow monkey, so always enjoy watching the seasoned professionals doing their stuff.....and making it all look so easy. . Look forward to next edition. Merry Christmas to all the sailing fraternity and of course the land support family's and crews.

Great episode, interesting part on the Farr and it's keel upgrade. That arrangement is similar to the Farr 280, was there any inclination on if they were looking at existing boats retrospectively?

You could give me 100 multihull and hydro fin boats and I would rather have one Gin Fizz exactly like Laura Dekker had her round the world vessel fitted out. Just my dream vessel for sailing

Great edition, lots of interesting stuff. Just one question. When most of us in monohulls are sailing around the Solent on a nice day at speeds of well under 15kts, and a shiny new fleet of AC40s comes towards us at 40+kts, shouting 'Starboard' might not be much use. Are we looking at a new class of vessel in IRPCS?

On the Farr 2x story, that keel affixation is known as a "Tuttle" box to all windsurfers.

Fun fact: Armel Le Cléac'h's name is supposed to be pronounced Leclerc (with a silent C, the rules of the french languages are weird one) but no one actually pronounces it like this...

Farr X2 keel failure. I was really surprised that the root cause of the failure wasn't fully understood. Only an analysis of the possible causes was available, supported by experience from earlier standard build practices. This then lead to design and manufacturing changes being made . This has really got to be unsatisfactory for the Designers/Engineers working on this. It's a critical area the yachting industry should address. I can understand a small yacht company not being fully resourced to be able to hire or buy in the expertise and tooling to support this activity. The industry collectively should have a body that support investigations when critical failures occur including during the development phase, particularly when there has been a risk to human life.

With these “boats” moving so fast across the water is much thought given to running into wildlife? I’m not sure if a breaching whale for instance could get out of the way. Not to mention other sea life dolphins or fish. Do they just sail through them? I’m far from a peta fanboy. I guess I’m partly curious about the crew getting hurt as well as the animals.
