@@maxseth1 There's definitely some Queen touches on the album, along with Supertramp, the Beach Boys and a host of others. A track like 'joining a fan club' has more of the Queen vibe on it.
I hear Queen in all the vocal harmonies and I hear a lot of Supertramp and Beach Boys influence. They are borrowing heavily but there is a lot of originality as well, in the way these borrowed sounds are used, in the beautiful arrangements, the inspired lyrics, and in the super lush production of the album as a whole. It was great to begin with and polished with lots of love in the studio. Spilt Milk is pretty much a love letter to the 70s and 80s.
I definitely hear Queen with the harmonies and Brian May esque guitars on Joining a Fan Club, but where do you hear Toto? Supertramp would've been a more apt comparison. This song practically screams Supertramp (and ELO) with the Wurlitzer piano lines and castanets coming straight out of The Logical Song

"New Mistake" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Even though I've been listening to this song since '93, I only just recently came across The Beach Boys "Sail On, Sailor." I have no doubt that Jellyfish's amazing bridge in "New Mistake" was directly inspired by the last minute and a half of "Sail On, Sailor."

Saw Jellyfish in the summer of '93 in Sacramento. One of the most incredible live performances ever. Also saw them earlier in the day at a Tower Records in-store, where they played 6 songs acoustically.
Just learned this song on piano, my hands hurt lol. Very 60s inspired chord progressions, it's simple but very beautifully arranged. Well done Jellyfish!

Saw Jellyfish in the summer of '93 in Sacramento. One of the most incredible live performances ever. Also saw them earlier in the day at a Tower Records in-store, where they played 6 songs acoustically. Too bad Andy ruined a good thing; he was destined for fame and fortune, if he would've hung in there.
I was so lucky to create and play original music with Andy Sturmer when he was at the tender age of fifteen for a few years ... The Jellyfish are so Bodacious here ... Especially my Bro ... Andy...
Like Supertramp and ELO, Jellyfish was SOOO talented, but did not gain their place on the top 20 chart. I only discovered them in 2022; as I was in college when they came out it makes me sad to know I missed the opportunity to experience them live. Maybe if they had held on for a few more albums they could have been that 'next big thing'.
I remember when I entered a record store in 1990. I was blown away with perfectly engineered rock music. I bought the 1990 and 1993 Jellyfish albums. I was lucky to buy the Imperial Drag album in 1996 that I still love.
Creative differences suck. What a magic they had.At least we got two albums.Definitely under appreciated band at the time. They were a fresh breath of air in a stale music scene at the time. Was so exited the first time I heard them.
I remember 20 years ago driving to six flags with some friends and we had the cassette of the first album cranked! Probably the only goofballs in our area who even knew who they were. Incredible band, incredible musicians!
Some unequivocally brilliant songwriting. Besides the pop perfection, there's the metaphorical brilliance of the early lines - getting the naive girl (the gentleman signing his love letters 'Best wishes simpleton') pregnant is "dialogue swam from his pen like pollywogs." Seriously? Remember when people could write songs instead of stilted awkward collisions of improper words? Geez, this is good.
Been listening to these guys since I was in middle school. Hopefully one of these days this video can get over 1 million views. I hadn't checked their spotify page in a while, but their monthly listens and amount of streams that some songs have gotten are way up in numbers than they were in the past. Also fun fact, Andy sturmer has been all over the place since they've broken up. Some of my favorite accomplishments of his involve him composing the Ben 10 theme song, and there's also that one Teen Titans song with him on vocals. I swear, it's literally been decades, but this band will get out of the underground eventually. (Also as a side note, all the band members have made really great music since Jellyfish. Ro Shame Bo, Imperial Drag, solo albums, etc.... Discovering Jellyfish led me down a whole other rabbit hole of music, and I also indirectly discovered Jon Brion as a young teen because of them so for that I am eternally greatfull)
I was lucky enough to see them live at the Keystone in Palo Alto. They were a great live band as well. I remember they did a cover of the Wings Jet. Each member took turn singing lead on the song and all were great.
Brilliant band and exceptional talent. I just don’t understand why they weren’t signed big time. But being a musician for so many years, video guys families come first I guess.

Here yet again and I will return as long as I can. ❤❤❤❤ Light years ahead of most other bands who hit it lucky ..... Thanks guys 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Such a tragically unappreciated band
Such a great song.
Besides the pop perfection, there's the metaphorical brilliance of the early lines - getting the naive girl (the gentleman signing his love letters 'Best wishes simpleton') pregnant is "dialogue swam from his pen like pollywogs."
Seriously?
Thing is, there are artists this great in every decade, you just have to look for them.
Such an abundance of talent
like a lost 10CC song... wonderful.
HOW did I let myself forget them?! Those two albums of thiers I had on CD - SO good. That Rhodes piano is 👌
I was lucky enough to see them live at the Keystone in Palo Alto. They were a great live band as well. I remember they did a cover of the Wings Jet. Each member took turn singing lead on the song and all were great.
Brilliant band and exceptional talent. I just don’t understand why they weren’t signed big time. But being a musician for so many years, video guys families come first I guess.
Perfect Pop 🍭💫
Awesome !!!!!
