What a delicious little masterpieces these Jellyfish songs are! At the last moments you can even hear a theremin (Good Vibrations references). These guys really love those 60s and 70s bands and have the perfect balance between agressivity and good taste
I loved Jellyfish! I wish they would get back together. Even though their time together was short, they gave me 2 of my favorite albums of all time. Parts of this song definitely have a Beach Boys influence which I love!
I saw them, twice. first time I saw them in san diego at the hard rock café. they played a free show supporting the newly released spilt milk album. I was absolutely blown away by the four part harmonies that were pitch PERFECT. I became an instant fan and paid a lot of money to watch them play again in San Francisco. I consider myself very fortunate to have seen these guys play live.
good question. rumor on the streets was they were bankrupted by the cost to produce spilt milk. apparently there is a cost to the name jellyfish and they had to settle the debt with the studio before the name could be used. I also heard there was in fighting in the band during these times. I will just take a very selfish approach to the whole thing and say, it is a damned shame that this talented group of musicians isn't sharing more great music with us.
The band hated this video and were talked into it by their management. They raised concerns about the guy sticking a needle into his leg and were ignored as the video company ‘knew what they were doing’. It ended up being banned in the uk and various other places. They then were allowed to do what they wanted for their follow up single, ‘New Mistake’.
That's a whole new perspective on the video for me, I thought they were doing this in a classic weird/cheesy jellyfish kind of way, but knowing it's actually supposed to be one of those stupid edgy 90s rock music videos with this whimsical harpsichord tune makes it even funnier.
So that’s why this video feel so out of place in their music video collection. This is easily their worst one. I can’t even tell what is supposed to be happening because of all the cutaways and horrible camera shots, should’ve let the band to their thing
Many bands were forced to accept whatever their record label thought would be the proper visual interpretation of their songs. The other one band that suffered heavily because of this was of course XTC, the band has said that the only video that is somewhat good is their 1983 song "Funk Pop A Roll" from the Mummer album.
1 dislike.... def?? Jellyfish are without any doubt the best band of the 90's. The arrangements and the backing vocals are simply amazing. There are no bands like this nowdays. If you're into The Beatles, Cheap Trick and melodic music you'll probably love Jellyfish.
Man, I caught this video on tv years and years ago, but didn't catch who it was, and have been seeking it out ever since. All I remembered was that chorus. . . The internet is an amazing thing.
The tshirt I bought when saw them with Redd Kross and The Texas Vamps is hanging on by a thread but will forever be a favorite memory of a fantastic gig in my old hometown.
I saw them live in 1993 when they opened for Squeeze and when I saw the dude playing a stand up drum set I was intrigued. I bought the cassette tape, I think it was pink. New Mistake was my favorite song but their songs were really different than what was going on at the time. I think the keyboardist had a great voice too, actually they all harmonize very well.
WESSERPARAQUAT To me, their harmonies are much closer to the style of the Beach Boys than the Beatles. This band was like the perfect mash up of the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Too bad they only put out two records. They were getting big and then just disappeared.
theVirtualGam3r Great post. Good ear, thats how I hear them too, they kind of bridge the gap between the two styles of harmony and counter melodies. Do you play?
My uncle let me borrow Spilt Milk on casette tape in the 90s and I've been a fan ever since. The entire album is still as good as it was 30 years ago. I also got to see RJM Jr with Jerry Cantrell in San Antonio last year. Pretty neat.
Huh, I never knew they made an official video for Ghost at #1! It's wild to be watching this for the first time, 30 years after I first heard the song.
I've loved this song since I first heard it... how nice to see an actual music video (like the kind MTV used to show waaay back when) ... great band... too bad they're not together anymore (and yes, the Beach Boys influence is totally there, but awesome)
I think the key here is finding out if they have a price and making a go fund me to meet it. Perhaps Sturmer will chill out sometime and be willing. And he wouldn’t have to front the band. He could tell the press that everybody shared vocals and stick to the no interview moratorium. Make great music and make everybody happy.

Rock/alternative music in the early '90s was in a state of flux. Hair metal was fading, southern rock found success mainly through the Black Crowes, and Britpop was attempting to break into the U.S. market with limited success (Blur's "Song 2" was meant as a parody). Amidst this emerged Jellyfish, whose Spilt Milk album brought a fresh power-pop sound that hadn’t been heard since the Raspberries. Then, grunge exploded, shaking up the music world with its raw, unpolished style and dominating much of the decade (until pop acts like the Spice Girls took over). In a different reality-one where Nirvana didn't rip off Boston’s “More Than a Feeling”-Jellyfish's "The Ghost at Number One" might have actually hit number one instead of fading into obscurity.

The "Beach Boys" bridge in this song (1:33) is one of the most beautifully melodic parts ever.
Beach boys all over it
It's sublime.
Pitch perfect

If pop was always like this, it would be a very well-respected genre. This is genius.
I interviewed them when this album was hot. At the end, the lead singer said, “That was a really good interview”. True story ❤
That would be Andy Sturmer
that's awesome
Underrated band and I love that the drummer was lead vocalist and was center stage at live shows with both upright kits and reg ones
And was a primary songwriter in the band!
Agreed 👍 watched them live in London and it was excellent.

Same. I caught them in Dallas on the Spilt Milk tour in 1993.

not only because of the theremin, but the final musical verses are an homage to smile
Jellyfish, or as I like to call them, The Queetles
It warms my heart knowing Andy Sturmer also wrote the theme to Teen Titans
Teen Titans, Ben 10 Classic and Alien Force, Kick Buttowski, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. All had themes composed by him.
