My daughter is a drummer in her marching band because of andy sturmer. It's amazing of all "my" music shes listened to, she totally gravitated to jellyfish. The fact that andy wrote the theme to teen titans didn't hurt. 😂
Tremendous. Jellyfish's "Spilt Milk" is one of those multidimensional, layered records ("Sgt Peppers", "Pet Sounds", etc) that could be difficult to pull off live, but they're pulling it off here. Every member is doing the absolute most that they can do--sing, multitask, etc. Manning is toggling between the guitar, piano and vocals. It's a shame that they didn't continue on, but according to Jason Falkner, Sturmer was pretty difficult to deal with and had a real jaded attitude already even when they were recording their first album. The most talented bands usually have the most ego to set aside. Considering that Falkner had set aside his own creativity for the first record--and that he's since crafted his own excellent solo albums almost entirely by himself--it's insane to think about the amount of pure talent, skill and character in this. IMHO, it's the character and creativity that probably broke them up.....no member probably had enough of their vision fulfilled.
I highly recommend the Jellyfish biography for any fans of this band. There is a reason they sounded so good live (besides raw talent). Extreme perfectionism, endless hours of practice and one of the best sound guys in the world.

Jellyfish was incredible. I think one of their only crimes was emulating their influences too hard (Beach Boys, Beatles, Queen), but that's also was made them so awesome to listen to. I do agree music like this should be what "sells". If this were mainstream top 40 music, it would be an indicator that the world is a better place than perhaps it actually is.
So many if the reviews focused on the sound alike qualities and I wish they would have heard them as original for the 90s by talented 20 somethings that werent even around in the 60s.
Hi Pianomagicdude, The mic is inside the bass drum. It is an AKG D-112. We used the May Micing system for the bass drum alone. We put finely shredded newspaper inside to act as a sort of acoustic gate....When the beater hit, it was wide open and then the paper would drop and softly mute the heads....And of coarse on the 'Pet Sounds' style close there was a (Lexicon PCM 70) big hall program that was added during the live mix. Cheers to You, Shalom

Oh man, I like them, too, but that's a hard assertion to make given they're not exactly innovators or original. They do a fabulous job of picking influential sources and amalgamating their signature sounds into a nice, tight song package. Master craftsmen from that point of view. Manning has a beautiful bridge section in this song, but I think a lot of people first reaction would be, "Oh, is that the Beach Boys?" I do think Sturmer has a rather unique voice and style, though. He could have been huge or huger, if he wanted to. Sucks.

Wow! The vocals from 2:33-2:50 are ridiculous. Clearly these guys were victims of the Seattle sound. One of my very favorite bands that nobody has ever heard of.
ridiculous meaning 'ridiculously amazing' I assume :)
ApplePieAftermath
I think that = truth....
gbvxtc they were poised to topple hair mettle when an unexpected guest showed up at the party.
Very Beach Boys.
Grunge did more harm than good.
Man, this is flawless! I'm stunned. Even the backing vocals are spot on!
Real music , played by real people . imagine that. Perfect .
I've seen a lot of gigs in my life...I've played myself for over 30yrs...toured many times (seen more bands touring) and, Jellyfish live is in my top 5 live bands ever.
mine too Doug. astounding live
I was a filthy hesher at the time but I always loved Jellyfish and still do. Beautiful performance.
Short lived and under-appreciated.
And now Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Eric Dover, and Tim Smith are making new music as The Lickerish Quartet. Hooray!
David Sloan if Jason Falkner put in an appearance i would break lockdown to see that
What the flip happened to Andy Sturmer, and why does everybody hate him?
@@BlackPrimeMinister I don’t hate him but I sure do wonder where he went. All I can find is that he has been scoring music for Disney and the Cartoon Network. He wrote and produced music for Japanese pop duo Puffy AmiYumi after Jellyfish. Pretty fun stuff.
@@drsloanski 26 years is a really long time not to have a conversation with your ex-, especially when you have (musical) kids. It's like divorce, but worse. Something else must have happened, I can't understand the indifference and bitterness otherwise.
@@BlackPrimeMinister Its scant on details, but it seems all his talent, naturally led to a disposition of being pushy (creatively) and after 8 years of it...and very little reward....it got old. he still makes music. But this video leads us to believe even He got tired of trying to make Jellyfish happen. (I was making original music at that time..and frankly if you weren't Grunge..no one at a label gave a damn .)
Jellyfish are on the same artistic level as The Beach Boys...even if they stole a few of the same riffs and effects. Love these guys! Their lack of commercial success is a testament to the fickle tastes of the public ear and jaded record industry.
They have zero bad songs. Can't say that about any other band, they should have been HUGE.
And the Imperia Drag album kicks ass.
Yes, Imperial Drag....is a strong album. And it STILL Rocks.
@@georgebarry8640 “You’re rushing us into the music. In fact, you should tend to lean back a little. They call it ‘laid back’- it’s a sordid term, but that’s how it’s used.”
Have you heard Roger and Eric’s latest work together: The Lickerish Quartet? Pretty good stuff. No Imperial Drag, but not bad.
@@crescentfreshbret Dont forget Tim is in there aswell
Thankyou very much.. Thankyou very much to Jallyfish...
They cancelled a gig in Bristol UK to appear on this show. I was gutted as I was going to that bloody gig. Still love this band tho!!
A totally fantastic, brillant band. Great songs, great arrangements, great lyrics, great dark humour, great creative artistry. People just didn't get it in the early 90's. We could do with Jellyfish back now with Andy Sturmer as well as The Lickerish Quartet!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Can't get enough of this song. . .
With Leonard Cohen in the crowd? Awesome!
SO feel this song! Was there HERE in Seattle, managing an incredible pop rock band ( The Day I Fell Down) who couldn't get a break to save their lives!! Oh Jellyfish, you were always number #1 in my book!!
I feel ya..I was in NY in my band right at this time..and we worshipped Jellyfish. We made commercial Rock/Pop and ALSO couldnt get arrested..largely due to GRUNGE.
Perhaps one of history's most under-rated bands....
Along with their idols XTC
Saw them at Club Babyhead in RI on the Spilt Milk "tour" ....there couldn't have been 100 people there, and I personally knew about 25 of them. But nobody there would have missed it for the world.
Wow, Club Baby Head in road island… is on the shortlist of my least favorite gigs ever!
+MrLextune But I'm So glad that you and your friends had fun!
Yeah there was a large pole directly in front of the stage, (TERRIBLE venue), and at one point Andy said, "I'd like to thank this pole for coming out to see us tonight" lol.
Wish I would have caught them live. I almost went to the Tears for Fears concert so I could see them open. But it's ok, I've seen The Grays! :D
+ a few Falkner solo shows. Got to meet him at one of them, had him sign the first pressing of his CD. awesome dude.
+Rob Cosentino One of my biggest musical regrets as well, I never saw Ray Brown either.
I got to meet these guys after a performance at the Metro in Chicago and they were gracious, funny and so real. I talked with Tim Smith for quite a while and they searched high and low to put that harmonious group together. You had to be able to play and sing and sing well. Mission accomplished. Yeah, I can't believe we only have the two albums from them. Still the gold standard in my musical collection. I have both albums signed. Will cherish them forever. I playing their music to my kids so they know what real talent looks like.
The Lickerish Quartet....the journey goes on.
This song is so epic. How was it not a hit.
Everyone witnessing this should have been blown away.
The bass player played guitar in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds 👍. He’s a southern chap from Georgia.
Yes, he is Tim Smith, i met him when he was touring with Noel, before i knew about Jellyfish, great musician!
As close to genius as it gets!
Probably the Best Band ever! In my Humble Opinion...
God they were so good
Epic album. Can't believe this band was so short lived.
Exhausted,under-paid...who WOULD continue?
so awesome!! just discovered jellyfish a few days ago
Awesome still, and larger than live!
Just outstanding, letter perfect, with passion. On Brit TV, no less.
The best group since The Beatles. Miss you guys
I saw Jellyfish 2 days after this recording in Leeds. It was a awesome gig and the band were amazing. Shame they're not still around but so glad I got to see them live!
Saw them live in 91' and they were absolutely awesome. A very technical band, great musicians all of them.
Seeing them on this show was the first time I saw them, instantly hooked, bought Spilt Milk after that, just rediscovered it and playing on repeat when I can. Love this song.
God these guys were so good
What a band. What. a. band.
Remember the words to this in 2020 from seeing this when it was aired at the time. Bloody brilliance. Love their live sound.
Hey, Shalom, coming late to this band - for me; So, very grateful to finally hear such a fine live mix, doing such justice to the band. Thank you
Still one of the greatest bands EVER. Had the privilege of seeing them live in Nashville around '93.
