Urban legend has it that some of the guys on the film crew actually cried while watching that brand new Lincoln being crushed for that scene.
Since it was not a whole car, i think your story is not true.

You can tell in the scene where the car is being lifted into the crusher that the engine has been removed. So at least they saved that.
Oddjob (whose professional wrestling name was Tosh Togo) was the uncle of one of my friends who I got to know a few years after "Goldfinger", when we were 6th grade.

Yes it does. Those Lincoln's were WAY ahead of their time. So elegant and understated. Was whimpering when the claw came down and grabbed it. What adds insult to injury, it's a very similar car to the one JFK was assassinated in. Even the same midnight blue!

You have to remember that at the time the car was brand new and nobody knew that cars were going to get so much worse
Two cars were used in the driving scenes, a dark blue 1964 and a dark grey 1963. The car that drive into the yard was the dark blue 1964, whilst the car that was crushed was an engine less 1963 that was quickly painted dark blue - including the door handles!
Although I knew it was a '63 that was crushed, sans engine, I was unaware that it was also originally gray but painted blue for continuity! It's difficult to see the door handles in that brilliant Florida.....uh "Kentucky" sunlight, but yes, just as the Lincoln disappears in the crusher, the doorhandles do look blue. Hopefully this Lincoln that died was well-loved and had high mileage before its sad demise.....I can't imagine it was a lemon in any way as these cars were remarkably well-engineered and constructed, built to last.....except when Goldfinger's plans are jeopadized.
Cars in the 60's were so sleek and powerful looking. Unlike the cars of today, which look more like a shoe.

Notice that this is the only scene in the film where both the Goldfinger and James Bond themes are released in full force - but neither Goldfinger nor James Bond is present.
When this film was made, American culture was still amazing and opulent (if also possibly considered pampered and wasteful) to most non-Americans. Thus the British film company that produced "Goldfinger" showed off the oversized US cars, the size and scope of the wide boulevards and garish signs of a typical American commercial strip, and the freeway interchange that were all still eye-catching to foreigners.
this one scene has only been imitated by other movies about a million times. A classic.
The sound of the crushing car was reused in the end scene of the 1971 Dennis Weaver movie Duel. How they used to rinse and repeat sound effects in films and shows.

The car was crushed in Miami,Florida, it was my grandfathers scrapyard on River Drive, two different cars were used , the one he drove in with is not one he got crushed, they used another one with the engine removed, and the scrapyard is still their, and the engine was removed at the scrapyard because they don't crush cars with the engine still in it, that's why you don't see any fluids as the car was getting crushed, my grandfather passed away in the late '70's and had pictures of them filming it, on his office wall!

Yes, you are absolutely correct David! I've lived here in Miami all my life and there is no way any of that scene was filmed in the UK. As I said in my reply to Martin, they do not have palm trees or Australian pines in the UK. And I don't think they ever had a Food Fair, but we sure did and you can see it clearly in the distance in one part of the scene. It is most definitely Miami, Fl. Just the expressway construction alone gives that away, LMFAO! They're still working on it today. Haha!

At 2:36 you see light shining through the engine room (removed), at 2:41 you see: nobody on the back seat.
Yes if you look carefully under the car while it is lifted , you can see that the engine is not there.

TheArkDoc yeah but Ford screwed up the T-BIRD they should have kept the T-BIRD that size and more streamlined to combat the Corvette but instead they made into a longer car in the 70s it was too big to run with that Chevy then the same with 80s and 90s models

Felix Leiter eats at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. The Thunderbird convertible in the chase scene has a missing fender skirt and towards the end the fender skirt appears. A bummer they destroyed the Lincoln Continental.
One of the scenes which makes Goldfinger the best Bond film.

The Lincoln actually weighs over 5000 pounds. That POS Falcon Ranchero barely clears 2500 lbs and isn't even a 1/4 ton rated.

This has to be one of the most American scenes in a James Bond movie. Going past a Sunoco sign, a drive in, and a Ford dealership in American cars. And most of all the fact that Leiter's partner came out of a KFC.
The car crushed was a 1963 prototype with no engine - the driving shots are a new ‘64 model in dark blue and a dark grey ‘63.

Goldfinger had all this planned out just in case someone wanted to leave. Oddjob didn't think to remove the gold before the car was crushed, and somehow a Ford Ranchero, based on a Falcon, held a 6000 pound car. But it's only a movie.
When this movie first came out, my 9 year old friends and I debated whether that was an ear visible in the upper left corner of the block when the car emerged at 3:32. Guess we took things too literally back then. (And I miss how calm and uncrowded things were back then, too.)
The car that was crushed had its engine, transmission, fuel tank and everything not visible on camera removed thus reducing its weight considerably. Also the crushed block that appears in the preceding scene is actually only half of the actual car crushed so that it could easily fit into the bed of the Falcon. If you look very closely at the scene where the claw lifts the car (which was actually a 1963 Lincoln not the 1964 which its supposed to portray) and look at the front grille, you can actually see right through the car where they have removed everything.
some guy said on a clip of this a few years back on youtube that he worked on the film and they cut the car in half otherwise the weight would have bottomed out the other car they put it in, and said they had two cars used in the film one for driving and one that was bailed that is what that type of crusher is called a big squeeze bailer acording to a book that mentioned it when talking about recycing and demolition tools I read back in highschool.

It true, the Lincoln being lifted up shows the horizontal Grille Bar linking the quad headlights for 63 plus it has wheel covers from the 1963.
There is a Video about some of the mistakes in this movie but the crushing of the car to put it in the back of a ranchero was said to be odd to return the evidence the to Goldfinger's Ranch . Except that when the goon leaves you hear him being assured that his cut of the Gold is in the trunk.
The Lincoln went back to get the Gold retrieved from it.

Most of the locations in this scene were filmed in and around my neighborhood in Miami/Opa Locka. A lot has changed since 1964 I see. The KFC in the beginning is still there! The Royal Castle at 0:23 closed down before I was born and another KFC was erected in its place (and that KFC has been closed down as well for over 10 years now). At 0:32, Joe's Drive-In Restaurant is now a Burger King and the Sunoco is now a Mobil.
27thAve Wow, someone noticed that. I attend MDC North Campus and I see that abandoned KFC when I take the bus. it's kind of sad that the neighborhood and it's surrounding areas are run down now, What year did the KFC close and why?, one of my coworkers told me it closed in the late 90s.
I wouldn't say the area is run down now, it looks almost about the same as it looks in the clip. Now that I think about it though, the last time I was in that abandoned KFC (which by then was a KFC/Taco Bell), an employee was singing "Pon Di River" by Elephant Man while taking my order lol, so I guess the KFC was closed maybe between 2004-2006, but it was definitely closed by 2007.

Maybe, I'm thinking 2004 or 2005. I heard that it closed due to a pest/rodent problem and then TPTB chose not to reopen the restaurant. I miss it, as well as the one on NW 95 St and 27th Ave that closed in the 90s. They had that quintessential "KFC Aroma" every time I stepped foot inside either location that'll make you instantly hungry. lol
27thAve Yum Brands or the franchisee probably thought it wasnt worth it. Opa Locka and the surrounding areas are considered bad neighborhoods although they are trying to do something about. They tore down the old Woolco and JCPenney in Miami Gardens

Lincoln was killed in Ford’s Theatre. Not long before this movie was made, JFK was killed in a Ford car named after Lincoln.

@@Orcawhale1 If you notice.. there is NO drivetrain in the car.. yu can see right through the grille to the gronud.. as it is being lifted to the baler. So..only the BODY was crushed and baled.
The car that was destroyed was a 1963 Lincoln Continental. Notice the different grill, but mostly notice that the '64 has flat side glass, while the '63 has curved side glass. Ford cheeped out on both the Lincoln and Thunderbird for '64 by reverting to flat door windows. The '61 - '63 Lincolns and Thunderbirds look more modern and sleek with their curved windows. I'd rather they'd have crushed the '64. T-birds kept the flat glass through the '66 models, Lincoln just for '64 & 65.
@@zxbzxbzxb1 Strangely enough, none of the 'fast escape cars' supposedly destroyed by the Mafia's bulldozer in the film actually were. In fact, all three cars survive to this day. The two E-Type Jaguars were just damaged and were repaired later. The Aston Martin DB4 wasn't pushed over the cliff edge at all - it was actually a substitute car (a Lancia Flaminia) that was. Th wheel covers of the car being crushed were from a 1963.
The crushed car was a '63. It's easy to distinguish because 1964 Lincolns have flat glass in the door windows, while the 1961-1963 Lincolns have the much more sleek curved side glass. The '64 Lincoln is also larger, but Ford cheaped-out with the less expensive flat glass for 1964 and '65 Lincolns, and 1964-'66 Thunderbirds. Personally, I wish they'd crushed the '64 and kept that '63.
The car that was crushed was a specially prepared prop car that had no running gear in it.

That KFC is still there today. I grew up two blocks from there and I still own the property. The ‘J.D. Ford’ they pass during the scene is now Metro Ford. My father worked there for 30 years. (Although not at the time this scene was filmed- about 10 years later.)

oddjob drives up to the yard in a 64 lincoln with a chrome strip horizontally across the grille....and gets out of a cheaper 63 lincoln with no chrome strip horizontally across the grille,which gets crushed...as the cube is loaded into the back of the ranchero and it drives across the yard the scene cuts before the rancheros rear suspension collapsed under the weight of the cube....leading to a search for spares and the production team cutting down the cube to make it lighter, when you next see the ranchero passing the thunderbird on the road, its the repaired vehicle with a cut down cube, hence the reason why the rear suspension isnt sitting low under the cubes weight.
At 4:16 Felix Leiter's Thunderbird magically grows rear wheel spats it doesn't have earlier.

Here’s a little bit of trivia that one wouldn’t expect to find, & that is, if you are a fan of the Columbo tv series, watch the episode with the late Lawrence Harvey, and will hear the car crushing part from Goldfinger in that episode, listen very carefully and you’ll catch that
They used that sound in Duel as well. You will hear it at the end of the movie when the truck hits the car before going over the edge (original soundtrack version).

Director Guy Hamilton must have been a lunatic to have that brandnew Lincoln crushed; in interviews he mentioned how people and members of the crew standing around were shocked and aghast.

Not a new Lincoln. You can clearly see the engine has been removed. Crushers only work well on car bodies and soft materials. In reality, cars are broken down before being crushed

Easier to take the gold from the boot first.
The cube had to be made smaller as the original crushed the Ford Ranchero that was used. A guy had to run back to the dealer nearby to get another one while the cube was cut in half. Funny how Goldfinger made that model of Fort Knox and then killed everyone that saw it. He had the model built so he had to show it to somebody! And yes, it's a 64 Lincoln that drives up but it's a 63 that goes in the crusher.
The continental weighed about 5000 pounds, so the El Dorado would not of been able to haul it away.

It's Miami. Never really watched the movie, but how does that flow with the story because I know that some of it takes place in KY? But these scenes are definitely in Miami, FL.

The scene of the airplanes gassing the soldiers at Fort Knox was actually filmed at Fort Knox.

Where did the body go? When the car was lifted by the crane, the back seat was seen to be completely empty.
If you look at all the 60s bond movies and throughout till the 80s, Ford contributed a huge number of cars to the 007 franchise. Mustangs. Cougars. Thunderbirds. Trucks. Cortina etc. good marketing by Ford. Most were destroyed. The car in the crusher is a suicide 4 door Lincoln Continental. Picked up on a Ford F 100 by Odd Job.
And beyond. Casino Royale was infamous for Ford product placement.
They were not far behind. So in theory if u count the seconds. They should have found the car whilst it was being crushed

This was filmed in Miami. The KFC and junkyard are still in business as of 2024.
Ford provided the majority of the cars for Bond movies. In Dr No an English Zephyr. Here we see Mustang , Thunderbird , Galaxies and Falcon pick up. Later movies sport Cortina, Cougar etc.

The joke of this whole sequence is that it was supposed to have been from the farm ( inKentucky) to the airport in Lexington. It was all filed in Miami( Opa Locka tobe exact). They were about to go to Mia airport then went up nw 27 ave and that’s where the car got crunched
