A top 10 chronograph list without a Speedmaster, Daytona, Monaco, or the iconic colorways of the Navitimer or El Primero is quite audacious. I'm loving it.

Great list. The Habring and Panerai made me smile. I think it's tough to overlook The Datograph though. I love the final piece being the 5976-1G, but I would slide in the Dato in lieu of the 5172. The asking price (retail lol) is close enough to the Patek for the list to still make sense. Cheers

One thing, that I would do differently, is that instead of Carrera Montreal, for the same amount of money I would go for COSC-certified Autavia Flyvback chronograph, which is what I actually did. • @marklipson

Excellent video. The "stepped" choices are perfect.
As a total aside, for anybody who may be reading here and give a hoot, if I may sound a contrarian note (but with all respect to fellow watch lovers)...
I have always been a huge fan of chronographs. They look great. But it struck me several years ago that I have almost zero use for any of the functions. Further, I feel I would be a) projecting a bullshit image versus just wearing a beautiful timepiece (more than my ego is comfortable with), and b) doing the watch a disservice. A chronograph is a marvel of form AND function -- a large part of its charm comes from the fascinating solutions it proposes to the engineering and design challenges of integrating complications, ergonomics, legibility, and aesthetics in a tight space. If I don't understand, or care about, a good chunk of that result, why the hell did I buy the thing in the first place...?
In short, I'll feel dishonest wearing something purely for show to somehow impress others AND that I'll somehow dishonour something's beautifully utilitarian purpose by focusing only the cosmetic and wearing it as mere jewelry (I'm just not that person).
Before anybody gets all troll-y on me, understand that I'm merely making a couple of small points here, mostly minor observations of myself and my specific thoughts and (yup) feelings (gasp) about watches...and acknowledging how personal and complex that can sometimes be with these tiny little machines.
And my attempt to shine a little light on how I feel about this particular watch style has also brought me some insight into other things in my life -- ranging from the micro ("if not a chrono, well then what...dammit?") to the macro ("what person do I want to be, and what person do I want to show the world...?").
BTW, for anybody who wondered or cared what kind of watch my heart settled on...That's not quite 100% resolved yet but it's coming increasingly into focus: apparently, I desire a vintage (late 1920s to mid-70s) dress watch with no date and, aside from simple markers and badging, as few embellishments as possible...I don't give a darn about the popularity, prestige, or country of origin of the maker, as long as it is "well-made" with a mechanical movement that will be "worthwhile" to maintain for as long as possible ("heirloom"). Price IS an issue: last time I checked my bank balance, it said, "Citizen, Seiko or Timex -- and don't get too starry-eyed even then, bud." Also, while it will be heretical to many here, as much as I truly love so many exquisite and expensive examples of high horology, I have great problems with the idea of ME (not you, not your family, friends, or neighbours, or anyone else) spending an inordinate proportion of my wealth (hysterical laughter break) on a frickin' watch when there are children starving in the world (or, hell, even when my tummy's growling). [See my convenient use of my financial constraints to make myself sound as altruistic, heroic and noble as Bono!]
Not that my grail won't also be some projection of bullshit self-image (low-key, pragmatic, humble), but I hope it will get me a little closer to meeting the "what I aspire to be and show the world" objective.

What about the thinnest chronograph from Bvlgari Octo Finissimo, and both A.Lange & Söhne Saxonia Triple Split and Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph.
And not to forget Rolex Daytona Cal 4130 and Omega Speedmaster Cal 321.
