Pete all due respect to you for taking your time with these videos. I see far too many RUclipsrs rushing their videos out within a few hours of the show airing and the quality and depth of analysis suffers for that. I'm an old school viewer of yours way back when you were doing the Twin Peaks videos, and you're always my go to channel, because nobody does it better.
They the other RUclipsrs get the episode before release to hype up the show/episode/series. They have the video done before the episode airs but wait x hours after to release the RUclips video.
Pete always made me look forward to his reviews as much as the upcoming episodes themselves. He did a super job doing Better Call Saul, and he has hooked me as a fan from here on in
@TalkSickMass which probably explains why so many channels don't want to criticize this season too harshly. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them those coveted pre-release screeners.
All I can say is this episode and season has got my attention and I’m loving it. It may not be season 1 but it’s a heck of a lot better than the other seasons. People just want to complain about everything anymore. It’s the problem with the golden tv era and having so much content anymore.
This season is a poorly written mess. Even season 3, which was disappointing, at least had actual detective work. The only person doing detective work is Pete, and it's always off screen. Also Navarro and Danvers are complete morons. They try to cover up the fact they killed Wheeler by FLIPPING PICTURES OF THE VICTIM BECAUSE WHEELER WAS LEFT-HANDED! What kind of idiocy is this? Wheelers just beat a woman to death by repeatedly punching her with his left-hand, THAT'S WHY HE SHOT HIMSELF WITH HIS RIGHT HAND! The writers are so incompetent. Also last episode Navarro was bleeding from her ears after seeing the christmas tree, WHY? This episode acted as if that never happened. Danvers doesn't even insist on getting Navarro some medical attention since Navarro WAS BLEEDING FROM HER GODDAMN EARS! Plus Navarro's mental instability is just ignored by Danvers. Like what is this nonsense. Also 3 gun shots and no one hears anything? Really? Pete just shot his dad and Danvers is leaving him to clean up the body? WHAT! Get your head out of your ass. This writing is embarrassingly bad.
I don’t mind the music in the show. I knew who Billie Eilish is but never had listened to her music before. So the intro has grown on me. 🎶 What do you want from me? Why don't you run from me? What are you wondering? What do you know? Why aren't you scared of me? Why do you care for me? When we all fall asleep, where do we go?🎶 I think the lyrics tie into the show nicely. The other songs they place in episodes adds to the story as well if you pay attention😮 to the lyrics. I get that it can take some people out of the show but I understand it’s significance for story telling The use of Eagle Eye Cherry’s “Save Tonight”….. “Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone🎶
Some people just hate anything more than an intro song and then say the show is a musical. You see if all the time. But I agree with you that the music is a character in the show.
Absolutely agree!! In an earlier episode Sing Sing by The Bones of J.R. Jones was both mesmerizing and apposite to the story, while last night’s song Warm Shadow by Fink was hauntingly beautiful.
@@mikeireland4202 can’t forget what an impact “twist and shout” is to the story. It’s such a happy go lucky song but yet it triggers a sadness to Danvers.
@@tacrewgirl I can see that. As long as the characters in the show are not singing the songs I can separate it from being a musical. I just think the songs are sending a message to the viewer. I like it when a show gives the audience different layers to the story. In this case it’s trying to tell you something through the music.
Earlier episodes hinted Hank & Peter's relationship was difficult. The aggressive shooting seemed partly revenge/anger motivated. Season 1 showed us that evil men do evil things- those evil men were motivated by their belief in something more evil than they were. We could find in this season that both things can be true. The people of Ennis believe they see the dead- the mines' pollution is killing people. As viewers we don't have to believe the supernatural elements are real. The characters believe in them and that belief affect their decisions.
They'd be forced only if they reported the fossils to authorities or something. They would surely cover it up. And then you have a theory that maybe they ignored the fossils but digging them up released something into the water in the area which made the scientists lose their shit. But if it had to have real life explanation I don't see any, nothing ancient and toxic is ever found in ice.
I cannot believe that Prior could not have shot his dad anywhere but the in the head. Not only did the dad have important testimony involving the crime, he was also HIS DAD.
Writer couldn't resist feeling clever by having Peter clean up his father's blood after his father told him, "Blood is blood." 'When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.' Could have disarmed him with a round through the hand at that range, low chance of injuring Danvers, then Navarro could have easily manhandled him to the ground. But that would be too messy for the plot; easier and more dramatic to do it this way. I wouldn't mind the writer prioritizing the emotional drama over the detective mystery if the detective work was still clever... Was it supposed to be dramatic irony for the audience to know the power went out 3 episodes before the detectives knew? If so that was a total failure, that's not the way to make the writing seem smart. Truth is we like our detective stories to challenge our intelligence, ever since Poe and Doyle, we want to feel the intelligence of the writer when we consume detective mysteries. I guess True Detective is a "crime drama" maybe "Crime Drama" would be a better title so I can lower my expectations that we're in the same genre as Sherlock Holmes because it's called True Detectives about some detectives solving a murder.
@@dianegreyson8787I don’t think the water is making people go crazy but it does appear their are health issues associated with it and they can’t drink it.
@@bloomingnut23 we see whale bones in the intro/trailer for sure. They just keep showing us the cemetery which leads me to think it’s more to it. And when Oliver quit wouldn’t talk about it leads me to think since he’s indigenous he was appalled by this find, quit, signed an NDA and went back to his family roots of fishing on the ice.
Eva and Liz, "Why did they cover the cave entrance?" Ever heard of sealing up a dangerous, "attractive nuisance"? Even if they really did it to seal evidence inside, no one would question the reasonable decision to prevent curious sightseers from ending up dead.
@@stupidminotaur9735 except we're not living the context of daily real life situations. That cave has VERY specific context to the case. We know that. Its okay to think critically
@@Mr-R.R.thinking critically includes acknowledging things that aren’t realistic and distract the audience from the plot. There’s a lot of things this season that just do not work bc they are too unrealistic and the story suffers for it. I’m not even talking about out the supernatural stuff, just things like cops wearing metal body jewelry on the job in below freezing weather, no one on the force knowing about how freezing to death works, a mental health facility that allows patients to wear multiple items of clothing they could harm themselves/others with, etc.
Great insights, Pete! I always look forward to hearing your take on the latest episode. I think the last two episodes have been kinda uneven - I can really feel the story being compressed within an inch of its life. But I still find really lovely interesting moments in both, and this one is particular had a lot of interesting moments that spoke to the themes.
I have been coming to a few comments of these breakdowns to see what people think about Annie K’s ghost being the only one that doesn’t point at Evangeline…
Maybe Evangeline is responsible for her mother's death, so all the ghosts are pointing at her because of her feelings of guilt. Don't know what it means that Annie K doesn't do that. Maybe she had told Annie about it.
First: complete agreement on the excessive ‘needle drops’ - the music takes me out of the story. But yes, Hank’s song was good and fitting. I'm surprised anyone liked this episode. For me it was the weakest of the season. 1. Primarily this episode lost me right away thanks to the jump ahead a week - that made the story lose all momentum. The first four episodes were a hour by hour, day by day investigation of a mass murder. Then suddenly a week has passed and nothing has been done? Nothing changed? That means there's nothing important going on in the story when it stops for a week. I really don't comprehend the writers making such a weak choice. 2, I really don't like how the Wheeler case has, in two episodes, become almost the central focus of the story. We started with the very mysterious mass murder of several scientists. Then the story shifted to connecting that case to the murder of one woman several years ago. Now for two episodes, it's almost as if those stories have been forgotten while we look at another case the two detectives were involved in, and their cover-up. And geez, it was ridiculous that it was gone into so much detail this episode without revealing which of the two characters actually pulled the trigger. 3, This episode also seem to bypass all the possible supernatural or hallucination-based explanations for the story. Instead it presented rather ridiculous "real world" causes for the opening mystery. An avalanche caused the scientist neatly stacked up their clothes? Just that one point disproves that autopsy, and yet somehow, Danvers couldn't say this out loud? We have seen the spiral pattern throughout the season, including a tattoo on the murder victim, and spray painted on the ceiling of a camper, and Rose said it was older than the town, older than the ice. But now we're supposed to believe it's just a warning sign hunters use about thin ice? And that's why all the hunters reacted so strangely in the previous episode? Obviously not, but it's a very weak fake-out. This whole episode was a very weak fake-out. For those interested, here’s a long cross-posted ramble on the main theory for the season: Unless Navarro is revealed as having an alternate personality who is responsible for everything, I will dismiss the whole season as awful writing filled with nothing but useless red herrings. Navarro has: - Insane mother and sister and many signs it’s genetic and she has it too - Flashbacks to the military where a soldier has half his head blown off but still talks to her - how blatant is that? - Flashbacks of her abusive crazy mother with a cross - a cross that appears magically in her car later - Multiple Visions of ghosts pointing at her - Multiple scenes of her going into a trance - Multiple scenes of her being impulsively violent. - Tells Danvers she listens to voices instead of praying - “She’s awake” either refers to Navarro’s alter, or an almost out-of-left-field supernatural entirety (or it will dropped or shown to be something stupid.) The Wheeler murder better be a clear case of Navarro going into a trance and executing him for abuse as she saw with her mother… if it is shown to be Danvers or not revealed, then this has all been horribly written, As for Rose - it’s clearly implied she is also Navarro’s hallucination. The one phone call to the police “from Rose” will likely be shown in a flashback as Navarro making the call while in a trance, faking the voice. We may get a satisfying ending that yes, some predicted, or - We will get a shitshow that is later explained by the writer as purposely setting up expectations only to (shock!) subvert them. “Subversion” as a goal instead of satisfaction has become a real problem for Hollywood writers lately. Call it magic, call it toxic water-caused delusion.... if Navarro isn't the killer, after all the things I noted above, then most of this season was a time-wasting red herring. (And I know that today we frown on "mental illness = evil," but there are also cultural and psychological reasons that alternate personalities resonate with many of us, and are seen in many mythologies and religions. )
If Qavvik races dogs, wouldn't he also be familiar with the symbol,so stay off the ice? Why wouldn't the hunters have just told Navarro and Prior that spiral explanation?
I’m having a hard time getting into this season. Your breakdowns help a lot. I see reviews rating this season higher than the previous one and I can’t understand this for the life of me. To each their own 🤷🏿♂️
I have no idea why theres allegedly some dorm of discourse regarding "massive disappointment" about this season. This ia rhe most engaged I've been since S1. The setting is very different, no timeline jumping, different perspecitves, excited to see what it all culminates to
John Hawkes song was great and could have been the theme song. I’m not disappointed in the show. I really like it but my criticism has been too much horror. Lund sitting up and Julia’s mom under the bed was way too cheesy for me. They didn’t need it. A few scenes would have been enough. You’re right like we wouldn’t remember all the people and kids pointing. I want all the questions answered. I do think it’s Navarro who’s awake, I read someone’s comment and agree.
Another great recap Pete ! My podcast partner and I were discussing Danvers repeated words to Peter to 'think, just think about it. I took that to mean 'don't do it, but Lisa corrected me to say that Sanders realised Hank had crossed aline could not go back. I think she's right and I agree wit your assessment of suicide by cop/son. I'm guessing he intended to take and kill Otto, but if Peter had not appeared I think Hank was going to double down and kill Navarro as well. He lucky Leah did not accept Liz's desperate invitation to come over for NYE ! 😂
Mr. Peppers, I found your comment about music to be ironic because subjectively I think the first season of True Detective was so good that it is like when a band releases their first album and every song is remarkable. Regardless of whether the album is a top ten hit or something niche, those who love that first record are then disappointed by the subsequent expectations attached to the albums that follow. The band is not a one hit wonder, but the band ends up never living up to the expectations of their fans. I think this is the case with True Detective in general. No matter what follows, many are unsatisfied because it is not the first season.
The explanation about the spiral as a warning of thin ice does not seem true, or at least sufficient. Why did Rose draw it for Navarro and claim it was ancient and then quickly erase it, as if she was afraid it would call forth something? Why was it on the ceiling of the trailer? It means more than ‘thin ice.’
Establishing shots clearly showed that Liz’s house was pretty suburban with neighbors very nearby. There’s no way that her neighbors didn’t hear the gunfire from the 2 shootings in her house. Really sloppy storytelling right there.
32 stabs is either passion or hate. I think Anne K was murdered by passion. Maybe she had a boyfriend and that's the reason why she kept her relationship with Clark in secret as she was using him. Maybe this person found it out and killed her while she was investigating the Silver Sky/Tsalal shady business.
My theory is that the fossil containing ice thawed and they found the microorganism that zombifies. So Annie got infected and she 'woke up' after they took her body back to the researrch station and terrified the lab workers into heart attacks. The tattoo is a what the microorganism looks like on a slide.
@@RoxieHuszar The organism they were researching was supposed to stop cells from dying (it's an easter egg from season 1). So she died 5 years ago, probably got stuck in the ice, and after she was thawed out and taken back to the research station, came back to 'life'. Clark kept her in his room and then the trailer since he had a thing for her and they could not reveal her since she probably got killed by mine people in the cave.
I literally do not know of any popular show from any of the major networks that’s come out in the last 5-10 years that doesn’t use music in the same way this show does. Music and tv shows have pretty much always gone hand in hand so I don’t understand that part of the criticism. Like I can’t think of a single show that isn’t being purposely subversive that doesn’t have music playing when there isn’t any dialogue.
In season 1, for example, T Bone Burnett was the musical director, and all of the songs used were kind of perfect. On top of that, the score was evocative. In this season, both the score and the pop songs used seem generic....and the ending of this episode had a terrible cover of a mediocre 90s hit song. It's a long way from when "Kingdom of Heaven" by the 13th Floor Elevators dropped in the first season.
The 'Night Country' is literally death, the realm of the dead. Navarro and the women in her family are listening to this siren song- the call from the realm of the dead
Yeah, there was nothing about Oliver aside from him missing. I need answers. I'm also confused how Otis was brought up in episode 4 without anything really alluding to his work or why there is an open case about him. Who opened the case? Definitely not the mine? Family in Germany searching for him?
Pete: Love much of your superb analyses, but have to disagree strongly with your castigation of the True Detective 4 series wrt their artful use of songs in an amazing soundtrack. For example, in episode 5, there is the haunting rendition of “Warm Shadows” by Fink. In an earlier episode, there was a mesmerizing rendition (with germane lyrics that suited the series perfectly) of “Sing Sing” by The Bones of J.R. Jones, and to cap it off, there is the extraordinary opening song to every episode “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eilish. Rather than distract me from the action in the series, these types of songs draw me in deeper to the superb plot line. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree here.
i find this season to be somewhat frustrating because i really like it and love the cosmic horror aspects, but this season feels obligated to tie into season 1 so heavily...which i initially loved. but now i feel like referencing and connecting back to season 1 really limited this season. and i struggle with Danvers. I do like it when a character starts off as loathesome and unlikeable but I don't see Danvers making an progress as a person...i actually liker her less when i feel like i am meant to come round on her...but her choices especially as it pertains to Prior, i want to throw coffee in her face and ask her why she is such an insensitive prick and why she gaslights Prior into thinking she is a good cop teaching him how to do the job when really she is just being cryptic and distant and is really just her projecting her own self loathing. i feel like the season really doesn't start until half way through...
Love your reviews….always my go to reviewer. On an unrelated note, would you consider reviewing a British show called “The Devils Hour”. It’s very thought provoking and deep
I get what they wanted to show with the protest scene, but it just did not work for me. In this “small town” where everyone knows each other, that cop didn’t recognize he was about to assault the police chief’s kid? It’s not like he didn’t get a chance to see her face, he pulled her out of the crowd. And none of the other protesters are trying to intervene when they see a kid on the ground getting beaten with a club? This whole season is SO sloppy.
At this point I have 2 talked aways. The most obvious is that this season has a lot to say about relationships from the empty Russian Fraud bride to the parent child relationships and their challenges. While.I'm neither smart or literate enough to understand the message and how it ties into everything, it's there all over and more than just a device. The other thing is that there seems to be a trend in police dramas of late that storytellers sort of wander off point as the characters move through the story for most of the episodes, then a bomb goes off, and the story closes is dramatic fashion. This is not a 2nd act closing escalation of danger as its been used historically but a reshift of the dynamic which changes the who what and why of whole story. This was head and shoulders the best episode of the series and if the overarching trend continues into the finale, I have high hopes
Ted Connelly did it. The actor Christopher Eccleston plays Ted has been the main antagonist in many movies. There is no way he playing a small role in the TV show.
Great take again. Poor Pete, still unsure if Rose is real, yes Blair noticed at the laundromat (among friends)....the spiral is a warning not a supernatural, looks like human evil again, we'll see. No surprise Ted for mayor is dirty we knew Hank was. Psyched for the finale, we're in a downward spiral.
I think the supernatural stuff is related to ghosts or spirits trying to help guide Navarro to what she needs to know and not think of her visions as mental illness but as a spiritual sensitivity she needs to Listen to. Danvers even had some spiritual incidents, with her son telling her she is coming and the encounter with the polar bear. The question is, will they listen and what will they find in the case and in themselves. It would be nice to know who the she is who was coming, who’s now here and what her role is in this. Clark’s role in both Annie K and the scientists. And if any consequences will befall Kate and the mine. How does the mine survive because it’s needed and how to keep it without pollution of the water. But that’s a real world question that people are actively trying to solve. And what Issa Lopez is bringing to our attention. And are there any positive outlooks for Peter, for Danvers and Leah’s relationship. Will Navarro find some peace. Will there be any type of happy ending? Also if Liz took Otis out of lighthouse how will she not be implicated in his disappearance? I think a happy ending would be for Liz to step down as sheriff and Peter becomes sheriff. That way his relationship with his wife might have a chance because he can go home when he wants. Liz stepping down might be a way of sort of retiring so she can mend her relationship with her daughter. Navarro getting her old job as detective, with her own department that focuses on building trust with Indigenous 12:51 Alaskans and law enforcement that way she can finally feel part of her community and people like the walkers victim and Annie K can get support they need and more importantly are less likely to be killed.
I think Navarro is going through a mental breakdown and not seeing ghosts. Remember, Rose told her earlier in the season not to confuse mental illness with the supernatural. Schizophrenia runs in families and I think she's haunted from illness and not ghosts.
There are two shots in episode 3 of Wheeler’s van & house. 1 when Danvers is telling Pete her version of the wheeler story… but a second similar shot in the opening credits there is the same view of the van in the same position BUT it’s shown through a car windshield and the windshield/car appear to have been in a wreck. (The opening credits shot immediately follows the second under water animal skull) Suspicion is Danvers windshield after a drunken wreck. Back to the her telling Pete…, Wheeler whistles Twist and Shout… I think he is taunting Danvers with in something related to the crash that maybe killed her boy and husband and wheeler was connected somehow. Maybe she was drunk, he was drunk and crashed the car killing while that song played on the radio
I've seen a lot of thoughts that Pete killed Annie, and Hank was saying "blood is blood" to remind him of what he did for him by moving her. I'm pretty sure that's a red herring, but if he *did* it's something about his wife and not wanting a baby.
So no one is questioning the obvious in the Wheeler "suicide"? Where's the gun? If it were a suicide, it's not like he could dispose of the weapon after he shot himself.
Hey Pete! You are one of my favorite reviewers of shows I like such as Breaking Bad and Fargo. You say so much in a little bit of time. I have an odd theory about the show, but not the murder of Annie or the scientists, bear with me. It's about Evangeline, Julia and Holden. I think the signif of the polar bear sighting is that either Julia and/or Evangeline KILLED Holden and his dad! By accident of course, clearly a car accident. Maybe Evangeline had a PTSD moment or survivors' remorse, or Julie had a mental episode, but I think she keeps seeing Holden bc she was there when he died, or covered up for her sister. The fingers pointing at her are accusatory, no? There's a theme this season on whether police should protect their loved ones when they commit crimes: Peter won't let his dad get away with stealing Annie's file, Danvers lets her stepdaughter get away with her misdeed until she finally has had enough, and I think Navarro helped her sister out when Holden and his dad died. That could have been the catalyst for Julia's suicide. I wonder if she know the boy who died was Danvers' son? Danvers clearly covered for Navarro after she killed Wheeler, and of course is not aware of who/what killed her son. Sound plausible??
Great review Pete as always! Couldn’t agree more about all the needle drops! There was one this week that was used a couple of times on The Walking Dead for Christ’s sake! I have a feeling the music supervisor may be a little green, and potentially related to one of the execs…
More and more Im beginning to think Rose is part of the spirit world that visits Navarro. Ive been carefully rewatching each episode and still have not found anyone else encountering Rose directly....whatcha all think?
There was a phone call - that's all. Could have been Navarro in a trance... And minutes later Danvers walks by Rose as if she wasn't there. @@allisonfisher9304
You said she lost her partner in the crash. II think she lost her husband and her son in the crash. I think she lost her police partner Navarro over the William wheeler incident.
Danvers is going to die in the finale. There’s no way she makes it….she can take the fall for whatever, but can take the mine and Tsalal down with her.
This season is going to be a bad joke if it ends with one killer that has nothing to do from what they show us in the past 5 episodes and every mister being solved with a mental illness to every character. They even dedicate a lot of time to that online girlfriend and the character already died lol, like, what was that subplot purpose??
I loved this season My takes on all the unanswered questions is the following The researchers was funded by the mines Manager Kate to Hide the water contamination Kate killer the victim who discovered the truth In réponse to that the fingerless woman and others avengers killed the researchers All the rest that look like a spooky 👻 sequence are explained by the water poisoning effect on people
Who is the titular true detective this season? It's not Danvers or Navarro, they make too many rookie mistakes, like not thinking about which hand Wheeler used, or taking til ep4 to realize what we knew in the first 5mins (the power went out). So is it Peter? Is there even a true detective in true detective this season?
They're all good at their jobs in some ways and bad in others, which is pretty consistent with the other seasons of the show. Navarro is tenacious, Danvers is analytical, and Pete is studious/resourceful. If it weren't for Navarro, the Annie K case probably would have stayed swept under the rug; if it weren't for Danvers, they'd have lost the case and Pete would be getting pushed around by his dad; if it weren't for Pete, they may not have made some of the important connections.
this whole season is way too erratic for 6 episodes. Is it supernatural, mental, PSTD from bad marriages blah blah blah. Too much left to clean up in 1 episode.
is this only me who feels this whole season is ridiculous? Is Navaro really an actor? what's that none sense poker face? Nothings in its right place. Why a PTSD person should serve as police? Son shot the father for what exactly?
No, Kali Reis is not an actor, she's a world champion boxer trying to cross over to Hollywood like OJ Simpson and Gina Carano. She made her acting debut in 2021, and was cast as co-lead in True Detective in 2022. Under a smarter producer that's not a problem, look at The Wire, you can find non-actors to bring your characters to life.
ok so they find a cave with fossils crammed full of mining waste and undead. my problem is that I don't care about any of these characters. Can't empathize with any of them. Danvers is awful, Navarro is a mix between bland and angry... I don't see a real arc in any of them.
I think the Tuttle connections could have been left out and it would not have made a difference. Maybe it would have even benefitted from being its own thing.
I think they are storing/hiding toxic waste in that cave.

I think the scientists were all slipped some kind of strong hallucinogen that resulted in their deaths because one of them threatened to spill the beans. And I hope Qavvik doesn't have anything to do with the murder of Annie cause I like his character.
In a way this reminds me of the bad recaps back in the day for the Walking Dead on AVClub because the guy doing them didn't like the show. You don't have to like something to do a decent critical analysis/breakdown, but if you're annoyed with the show, for like say, their musical choices, then that bleeds into everything, and it becomes impossible to not allow that annoyance to color everything else.
Not a fan of the season. Jodi fosters character is just that a character, her role doesn’t seem genuine especially when she does her question thing. It isn’t explained why the son has this blind devotion to Jodi fosters character, neglects his family, his son, and hates his father. And the father who isn’t perfect has his own life, has an long distance relationship which turned out to be a possible scam, try’s to rebuild his relationship with his son and over Jodi fosters character chooses to kill is father to save her. The whole this of the audience trying to buy that he’s a true blue cop is out the window. And the daughter, is she supposed to be in high school? He looks like she’s in her late 20’s. The season brings nothing to the spiral mystery and for a show called true detective, they don’t have any detective work, they’re not solving the frozen incident with the audience. Just vision sequences that reference their past that has no connection of what is happening now. This story is insufferable
" The season brings nothing to the spiral mystery " - So far, it does confirm that detective Rust Cohle's (from Season 1) father Travis was in Alaska when he "appears as a ghost" to Rose Aguineau(Fiona Swaw) pointing to where all the dead scientist's bodies are located. There are many references, made by Detective Rust in season 1, regarding Travis Cohle and his son Rust being and living in Alaska at some time And, what about the frozen scientist, during the beginning of episode 2, where it's shown that he has a clearly seen "Spiral" on his forehead, and then there's the other scientist with the spiral tattoo on his chest which he got done after the girl he knew with the tattoo on her back got killed,,,
I strongly disagree with your dislike of the music, the music sometimes gives us more of an idea of what the Director is wanting to say if you really listen to the words and the lyrics. I also feel that the song choices have been ideal if not perfect. I suspect you’re probably not somebody who looks to music to give you Solis, however, a lot of people find it to be yet another character within an ensemble to try to relay information to the audience.
Peter might be the killer of the girl. The spiral stone I rewatch the last episode she put the Stone on the counter . The crab women they freeze crabs at the bluecrab place... 4. i still think tthe drunk lady might be part of it still think 1 of the guys busted her window before he died and she forced the crash on purpose.
I believe Peter is the killer and that he chose to execute his father in that moment to keep him quiet since he was starting to spill secrets. I think Pete looks to Liz as a motherly figure so he doesn't want her to know he killed Annie.
@@justhereforthetragedy only 2 things i can think of is his son 7 years old? he looks younger tho. so she might be his um birth nurse and for some reason pete killed her? 2. pete part of the tutle cult and he got damade from the time he was under water.....
Interesting take on music with the last two episodes as well as the entire season. I disagree 100% and really dig the added layers the selected tunes add to the storytelling.
I cant stand people who use phrases like these or the often abused phrase "blood is thicker than water" in real life, because it means the opposite of what people think. Its a phrase from scripture that actually goes like: "The blood of the bond (the chosen bond with God) is thicker than the water of the womb" and thats means the relationships we choose can be more important than the realtionships we are born into (realtives). Family is just other flawed human beings that can be absolute maniacs and we owe them nothing if they are toxic as f for us.
the killer must be someone who has had some screen time, otherwise it would have no impact on us the viewers also, it must be someone which is not obviously a suspect, to cause an impact on the viewers and on other people in the show there are not many left to choose from my choice: Qavvik reason ? I think he's working undercover for the mining company, a fact I think Kate doesn't know Annie found a cave where the toxic wastes that are polluting the water are kept, Qavvik killed her, and asked indirectly for Kate to remove the body from the cave it will be a shock for Navarro, of course I also find him too easy going with all the things that are happening, and the explanation he gave Navarro on why he's alone in town is weak (I don't remember the details) also, the explanation his pal gave about the spiral, I found it unconvincing now, for the scientists I think the caves which are the true Night Country (not the cave in which Annie was killed) are home to ancient virus/bacteria that causes hallucinations in humans the Iñupiat people that lives in and around Ennis know that the caves are dangerous, that's the reason they're called The Night Country most of the people are lightly affected by those things, because they don't have much contact with the critters that's why they have visions, see dead people, etc also, Navarro really has some mental problems, like her sister and mom had, but they are made worse by the things people heavily contaminated suffer massive hallucinations, like the scientists, Otis, and Clark Otis and Clark got contaminated in the caves Otis and Clark have had some luck in that they didn't die from the effects of the hallucinations, for whatever reason maybe somehow Clark caused the other scientists to be contaminated, which caused them huge hallucinations, and they went out in the cold in fear and despair Annie's death and the scientists' deaths are unrelated
It is possible that Pete killed Annie. Hank went out of the way to say he just moved the body. He did not kill her. In early conversations, he said he was not a killer. He also said blood was thicker. He was willing to kill Liz or die by Pete’s hands. I think Hank scarified himself to save his son.
Peter shooting Hank: I don't know if it has any importance, but almost the first thing I thought it was vey Edipian, a son killing his father also, I think that maybe Qaavik knows more than he lets out, tha "night country" beings the dangerous caves seem too shallow an explanation
Agree! "Fortitude" was a great show during its short run of only 25 episodes over 3 seasons, although I was very disappointed in the way it ended, and with only 4 episodes in the final "season," I felt cheated in a way as there could have been soooooo much more done with this excellent series. It had great "bones" to build on. The major thing that got me hooked on it was the superb actor Richard Dormer's portrayal of "Sheriff Dan Anderssen!!!" I so desperately wanted to know what became of everything after his ride in the ambulance in the last episode! And, the great Stanley Tucci was perfect in his portrayal of DCI Morton coming to investigate a murder in Fortitude. Since it ended in 2018, I think I've curled up, usually deep into wintertime, and binged all 25 episodes of "Fortitude" over a weekend at least once a year. It is that good!
Could it be that Pete was defending Danvers because every time Kayla would be upset with him she would say it was because he was choosing Danvers. She never said it was your job, and she never gave him any grace on that it was always your choosing her, so perhaps Pete needed to do that final choice to at least dignify what Kayla was doing which if we had known Kayla better maybe it would have made more sense for her to be so absolutely against Pete having to be called out to his job. He’s a police officer that is not an easy job people know that they get called out all the time it said well-known thing, so why was it so offensive to Kayla and why did she always make it so personal that it had to be about Danvers And why did Hank say that Danvers was being Mrs. Robertson to Pete that makes no sense Miss Robinson was seducing and having sex with the kid, so this makes no sense he would say Miss Robinson, unless there was something that was going on in the past, so I feel that had that character Relationship been more explored we would have better understood why Pete chose to kill Hank we do know that he is a hero and he does what’s right and he doesn’t think that what his dad was did was right which was to kill Otis and draw his gun on Danvershe just seems to me that there was an extra element that we didn’t get to see
Pete all due respect to you for taking your time with these videos. I see far too many RUclipsrs rushing their videos out within a few hours of the show airing and the quality and depth of analysis suffers for that. I'm an old school viewer of yours way back when you were doing the Twin Peaks videos, and you're always my go to channel, because nobody does it better.
Indeed.
The others had screeners for all six episodes. Not sure if Pete does but he puts a lot of time in his theories like BrianPilot.
I agree! I look forward to the next episode every week. It's gonna suck when it's over and I have nothing to look forward too.
Yay ! Some of us were waiting on yours 🥲
Completely agree about the slowed-down cover versions of songs. Totally played out now.
When we all fall asleep, where do we go?🎶
I think the lyrics tie into the show nicely. The other songs they place in episodes adds to the story as well if you pay attention😮 to the lyrics.
I get that it can take some people out of the show but I understand it’s significance for story telling
The use of Eagle Eye Cherry’s “Save Tonight”…..
“Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone🎶
I think there are ancient fossils in the cave if found it would be forced to shut down the mines
Yeah, but maybe that’s exactly WHY he shot him in the head … hmmmm.. blood is blood Peter
@@SayMy_User_NamePrior being the killer may be the most ridiculous reveal.
An abusive dad
He was a murderer and if Peter's a good cop, that would probably matter more to him.
The mine moved an indigenous cemetery of a bunch of bodies to that cave, and those bodies are polluting the water source
@@dianegreyson8787I don’t think the water is making people go crazy but it does appear their are health issues associated with it and they can’t drink it.
First part very interesting I was thinking fossils
And the same family from season 1 is funding everything
@@bloomingnut23 we see whale bones in the intro/trailer for sure. They just keep showing us the cemetery which leads me to think it’s more to it. And when Oliver quit wouldn’t talk about it leads me to think since he’s indigenous he was appalled by this find, quit, signed an NDA and went back to his family roots of fishing on the ice.
I wasn't thinking suicide by son. Hank repeatedly spoke about their blood ties, but maybe he knew that Peter wasn't buyiing it.
I wish they touched on Navarro having a bloody ear and what she saw in the ship.
Eardrum rupture. Same shit that happened to the scientists and to Otis.
Eva and Liz, "Why did they cover the cave entrance?" Ever heard of sealing up a dangerous, "attractive nuisance"? Even if they really did it to seal evidence inside, no one would question the reasonable decision to prevent curious sightseers from ending up dead.
irl this is a common thing some mining locations its law... so it shouldnt be a surprise.
Patiently waiting what better be a scathing takedown of the abysmal finale.
For those interested, here’s a long cross-posted ramble on the main theory for the season:
Unless Navarro is revealed as having an alternate personality who is responsible for everything, I will dismiss the whole season as awful writing filled with nothing but useless red herrings.
Navarro has:
- Insane mother and sister and many signs it’s genetic and she has it too
- Flashbacks to the military where a soldier has half his head blown off but still talks to her - how blatant is that?
- Flashbacks of her abusive crazy mother with a cross - a cross that appears magically in her car later
- Multiple Visions of ghosts pointing at her
- Multiple scenes of her going into a trance
- Multiple scenes of her being impulsively violent.
- Tells Danvers she listens to voices instead of praying
- “She’s awake” either refers to Navarro’s alter, or an almost out-of-left-field supernatural entirety (or it will dropped or shown to be something stupid.)
The Wheeler murder better be a clear case of Navarro going into a trance and executing him for abuse as she saw with her mother… if it is shown to be Danvers or not revealed, then this has all been horribly written,
As for Rose - it’s clearly implied she is also Navarro’s hallucination. The one phone call to the police “from Rose” will likely be shown in a flashback as Navarro making the call while in a trance, faking the voice.
We may get a satisfying ending that yes, some predicted, or -
We will get a shitshow that is later explained by the writer as purposely setting up expectations only to (shock!) subvert them.
“Subversion” as a goal instead of satisfaction has become a real problem for Hollywood writers lately.
Call it magic, call it toxic water-caused delusion.... if Navarro isn't the killer, after all the things I noted above, then most of this season was a time-wasting red herring.
(And I know that today we frown on "mental illness = evil," but there are also cultural and psychological reasons that alternate personalities resonate with many of us, and are seen in many mythologies and religions. )
It was a very justified usage of weapon to save Liz. No clue why they want to cover it up.
Because they'd also have to explain why Liz had Heiss and why she interfered with his arrest.
I hope Pete isn’t telling Leah to tell Kayla. He loves her before he commits suicide. It’ll be a real bummer.
If Qavvik races dogs, wouldn't he also be familiar with the symbol,so stay off the ice? Why wouldn't the hunters have just told Navarro and Prior that spiral explanation?
Because the writers were wasting our time on a detective's promiscuity, daddy issues and teenage angst.
@@susivarga7303lmaoo exactly 😭
I’m having a hard time getting into this season. Your breakdowns help a lot. I see reviews rating this season higher than the previous one and I can’t understand this for the life of me. To each their own 🤷🏿♂️
Season 3 was better imo too. Kept the philosophical and dark aspects that we loved in season 1.
I have no idea why theres allegedly some dorm of discourse regarding "massive disappointment" about this season. This ia rhe most engaged I've been since S1. The setting is very different, no timeline jumping, different perspecitves, excited to see what it all culminates to
Same. I really like this season.
Lmfao. It’s garbage. If u enjoy garbage then that’s good for u my man.
I thought this season was great!!
Because this season is poorly written, isn’t grounded in reality like the other three seasons, has no interesting characters and the case is boring.
What did you think of the ending?
Agreed
The explanation about the spiral as a warning of thin ice does not seem true, or at least sufficient. Why did Rose draw it for Navarro and claim it was ancient and then quickly erase it, as if she was afraid it would call forth something? Why was it on the ceiling of the trailer? It means more than ‘thin ice.’
Establishing shots clearly showed that Liz’s house was pretty suburban with neighbors very nearby. There’s no way that her neighbors didn’t hear the gunfire from the 2 shootings in her house. Really sloppy storytelling right there.
I was thinking about this too. Others live more remotely but not Liz.
But Annie died over 5yrs before?
@@RoxieHuszar The organism they were researching was supposed to stop cells from dying (it's an easter egg from season 1). So she died 5 years ago, probably got stuck in the ice, and after she was thawed out and taken back to the research station, came back to 'life'. Clark kept her in his room and then the trailer since he had a thing for her and they could not reveal her since she probably got killed by mine people in the cave.
@@hibiscus779the show keeps reminding us of everything all the time except what the research was all about. I think you're very correct
I just wanted to give Prior a big hug. Poor guy.
Pete must be recovering from the season finale. lol
The thin ice also likely refers to the "thin spot" concept. An access point to another realm. So i think the carcosa idea may still be intact.
Love True Detective series all of them.
Love all of your videos, thanks again!!
Always enjoy your review 😊
I just realized Barry Jenkins was a exec. producer. That explains a lot of the lighting. 😍
Yeah that was a ridiculous scene.
Yeah I noticed Blair at the laundromat too.
1 when Danvers is telling Pete her version of the wheeler story…
but a second similar shot in the opening credits there is the same view of the van in the same position BUT it’s shown through a car windshield and the windshield/car appear to have been in a wreck. (The opening credits shot immediately follows the second under water animal skull)
Suspicion is Danvers windshield after a drunken wreck.
Where are you Pete? Been waiting for your Ep6 review
Thanks, Pete.
Great review Pete as always! Couldn’t agree more about all the needle drops! There was one this week that was used a couple of times on The Walking Dead for Christ’s sake! I have a feeling the music supervisor may be a little green, and potentially related to one of the execs…
The spiral is the Nvida logo lol.
It wouldn’t surprise me if we never really learn what happened to the scientists.
More and more Im beginning to think Rose is part of the spirit world that visits Navarro. Ive been carefully rewatching each episode and still have not found anyone else encountering Rose directly....whatcha all think?
Peter states Rose found the bodies of the scientists early on, so she’s real in some sense.
There was a phone call - that's all. Could have been Navarro in a trance... And minutes later Danvers walks by Rose as if she wasn't there. @@allisonfisher9304
@Pete Peppers Any connection of Blue Sky Mine 6:41 and Midnight Oils song by the same name?
You said she lost her partner in the crash. II think she lost her husband and her son in the crash. I think she lost her police partner Navarro over the William wheeler incident.
Messy season and two episodes to short. Overal disapointed. So much potential.
I absolutely love this season.
I'm enjoying the series
Also…. If they are all drinking bad water surely this would be having an effect on mental health
Danvers is going to die in the finale. There’s no way she makes it….she can take the fall for whatever, but can take the mine and Tsalal down with her.
But she was seen giving an interview post incidents and it was daylight outside.
This season is going to be a bad joke if it ends with one killer that has nothing to do from what they show us in the past 5 episodes and every mister being solved with a mental illness to every character.
They even dedicate a lot of time to that online girlfriend and the character already died lol, like, what was that subplot purpose??
Yeah exactly, like to show him as a good at heart guy?
I loved this season
My takes on all the unanswered questions is the following
The researchers was funded by the mines Manager Kate to Hide the water contamination
Kate killer the victim who discovered the truth
In réponse to that the fingerless woman and others avengers killed the researchers
All the rest that look like a spooky 👻 sequence are explained by the water poisoning effect on people
I'm not sure how they can answer all these questions in 1 episode. I really hope they didn't Rush Things...
4:29 not _a slab avalanche_ 🤣
@@AardvarkAdventureAgreed.
The preview of next weeks ep shows Peter cleaning and asking Leah for some kind of help. It also shows Liz falling thru the ice
this whole season is way too erratic for 6 episodes.
Nailed it! ✌🏻
Yea
I empathize with Prior a little bit. He works hard, takes care of his family, and has a horrible wife that doesn’t appreciate him.
I think the Tuttle connections could have been left out and it would not have made a difference. Maybe it would have even benefitted from being its own thing.
The fact we have to wait end of the month for the next episode is just cruel
I think they are storing/hiding toxic waste in that cave.
I think the scientists were all slipped some kind of strong hallucinogen that resulted in their deaths because one of them threatened to spill the beans. And I hope Qavvik doesn't have anything to do with the murder of Annie cause I like his character.
This season is buns
There are many references, made by Detective Rust in season 1, regarding Travis Cohle and his son Rust being and living in Alaska at some time
And, what about the frozen scientist, during the beginning of episode 2, where it's shown that he has a clearly seen "Spiral" on his forehead, and then there's the other scientist with the spiral tattoo on his chest which he got done after the girl he knew with the tattoo on her back got killed,,,
I strongly disagree with your dislike of the music, the music sometimes gives us more of an idea of what the Director is wanting to say if you really listen to the words and the lyrics. I also feel that the song choices have been ideal if not perfect.
I suspect you’re probably not somebody who looks to music to give you Solis, however, a lot of people find it to be yet another character within an ensemble to try to relay information to the audience.
Corny music corny lyrics corny shit
I agree. I find the music to be another character. People are not listening to lyrics and what they mean to the story.
I can get on board with Pete being the killer, but what's the motive?
@@justhereforthetragedy only 2 things i can think of is his son 7 years old? he looks younger tho. so she might be his um birth nurse and for some reason pete killed her? 2. pete part of the tutle cult and he got damade from the time he was under water.....
I feel like such a dummy. How do I miss all this stuff?
Pete is too good to be true. He has access to too much information. I expect his evil nature to be revealed in the last episode.
The music really kills the vibe. Takes you out of the scene
Yeah...the music during the mine protest was mixed too loud and made the scenes less intense. Stii, episode 5 was my favorite so far this season
Interesting take on music with the last two episodes as well as the entire season. I disagree 100% and really dig the added layers the selected tunes add to the storytelling.
Blood is blood Peter … peppers
I cant stand people who use phrases like these or the often abused phrase "blood is thicker than water" in real life, because it means the opposite of what people think. Its a phrase from scripture that actually goes like: "The blood of the bond (the chosen bond with God) is thicker than the water of the womb" and thats means the relationships we choose can be more important than the realtionships we are born into (realtives). Family is just other flawed human beings that can be absolute maniacs and we owe them nothing if they are toxic as f for us.
the killer must be someone who has had some screen time, otherwise it would have no impact on us the viewers
also, it must be someone which is not obviously a suspect, to cause an impact on the viewers and on other people in the show
there are not many left to choose from
my choice: Qavvik
reason ? I think he's working undercover for the mining company, a fact I think Kate doesn't know
Annie found a cave where the toxic wastes that are polluting the water are kept, Qavvik killed her, and asked indirectly for Kate to remove the body from the cave
it will be a shock for Navarro, of course
I also find him too easy going with all the things that are happening, and the explanation he gave Navarro on why he's alone in town is weak (I don't remember the details)
also, the explanation his pal gave about the spiral, I found it unconvincing
now, for the scientists
I think the caves which are the true Night Country (not the cave in which Annie was killed) are home to ancient virus/bacteria that causes hallucinations in humans
the Iñupiat people that lives in and around Ennis know that the caves are dangerous, that's the reason they're called The Night Country
most of the people are lightly affected by those things, because they don't have much contact with the critters
that's why they have visions, see dead people, etc
also, Navarro really has some mental problems, like her sister and mom had, but they are made worse by the things
people heavily contaminated suffer massive hallucinations, like the scientists, Otis, and Clark
Otis and Clark got contaminated in the caves
Otis and Clark have had some luck in that they didn't die from the effects of the hallucinations, for whatever reason
maybe somehow Clark caused the other scientists to be contaminated, which caused them huge hallucinations, and they went out in the cold in fear and despair
Annie's death and the scientists' deaths are unrelated
Agree about the music. Not a fan. Appreciate the analysis.
Prior is Wheeler's son.
I agree with the music in the show.
Great video Pete! Can't wait to see how it all ends! See ya soon! 🌀🌀🐻❄️🐻❄️🗻🗻
It is possible that Pete killed Annie. Hank went out of the way to say he just moved the body. He did not kill her. In early conversations, he said he was not a killer. He also said blood was thicker. He was willing to kill Liz or die by Pete’s hands. I think Hank scarified himself to save his son.
The kid in the “Holden vision” isn’t Holden. Look at the skin color of the hand…
Peter shooting Hank: I don't know if it has any importance, but almost the first thing I thought it was vey Edipian, a son killing his father
also, I think that maybe Qaavik knows more than he lets out, tha "night country" beings the dangerous caves seem too shallow an explanation
Pit Peters
Pete is sus to me
This season kinds of reminds me of Fortitude
Shocking bad this whole season. Awful writing leads to awful drama.
Robertson to Pete that makes no sense Miss Robinson was seducing and having sex with the kid, so this makes no sense he would say Miss Robinson, unless there was something that was going on in the past, so I feel that had that character Relationship been more explored we would have better understood why Pete chose to kill Hank we do know that he is a hero and he does what’s right and he doesn’t think that what his dad was did was right which was to kill Otis and draw his gun on Danvershe just seems to me that there was an extra element that we didn’t get to see
Cthulhu waits dreaming. Buit i think this show is about Sedna.
