@@tildaowen Vi also has a voice line like "Vi stands for Violence" (fun fact before arcane we didn't know that her real name is Violet, just like we didn't know that Jinx's real name is powder) Jinx also has a voice line "Vi stand for stupid" and that after Arcane have much more sense 😢
@@toamszkozak8822 Yup, Vi definitely is violent and she does do some stupid things along the way... But I don't think these things damn her, she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, it's hard to do that without making mistakes... :-)
This relationship is the greatest I have ever seen put to screen. I'm a straight 43 year old dude and this connection between these two seems more genuine than anything I have seen. The fact that they did it with so little screen time is absolutely shocking.
I agree totally! I may be biased because I'm a lesbian, but the more I dig into their relationship, the more it makes sense to me, the more I love how well both they and their relationship has been portrayed, it just happens so naturally ❤️
Yeah my boyfriend noticed it and liked it way before I even accepted it (I'm bi and have been let down by many shows before lol) I really can't wait for the next season, everything was so damn good in this show >.< All the character are so well written, its rare to find a show like this one.
That's the sad thing about relationships being portrayed on screen, especially hetero ones which usually just entail the following: male lead meets only female character in show/movie/game, contractually obligated to have a romantic relationship in spite of complete absence of chemistry, connection or common sense. It feels so forced, cringeworthy and boring. I think this show has the best roster of characters ever put to screen and considering how little time they had to develop so many characters, it really is astounding. It's a testament to the masterful visual storytelling they pulled off here because there's hardly any expositional dialogue. Just like the seamless development of the characters, the relationship between these two grows so organically and the development feels completely natural. It's just... "chef's kiss"
@@ipsnagi9442 Well said! I agree, the show is extremely well written, the characters and relationships develop naturally. Mel and Jayce seems forced, but that's because it's supposed to be forced, at least at first. Usually when there's a male and a female lead, it's expected that they develop a romantic attachment no matter who and what they are and if there's any chemistry at all. That IS rather boring... Caitlyn and Vi just make sense together, because of who and what they are and what they go through. And the chemistry is definitely there! ❤️
One of my favorite parts is when Vi flashes back to Cait at the tea party. The moment she remembers is Cait showing her compassion when she's most vulnerable. (And I can't help but contrast this to Vander's "whatever happens, it's on you" guilt trip.)
Yes, it's very interesting that the image she sees of Caitlyn is not the same as the actual scene, definitely a more vulnerable look on her face! Some have read Caitlyn's face as more sensual with the open lips and wide open eyes, but I agree with you, what Vi sees is through her own lens of protectiveness and guilt, so Cait looks more vulnerable and scared to Vi...
People hate vi for being with Caitlyn over Jinx or not doing what jinx said at the dinner scene as if she wasn’t alone in prison for over 7 years living with the guilt of her lashing out while Jinx had a support system to lean on. Honestly she’s been through so much it’s nearly unfair at how her trying to protect and make things right always goes punished and even after losing her family she never lost her own morality. I wanna give her a hug honestly
I know! And I agree, Vi deserves a better fate, yes, she made some mistakes, but she tries to rectify them... I feel sorry for Jinx, but not so much so that she should dictate everything that happens to Vi. Caitlyn is good for Vi, which Jinx can't understand. I think Vi knows, but she chooses to keep punishing herself over Powder... She definitely needs a hug, or two, a kiss, a cuddle, all of it...
The bedroom scene is so short but so much is happening. Caitlyn still doesn't even know what occured so long ago that got Vi locked up. She doesn't even know who Vander is and what happened there. But she tells Vi that what happened to Jinx isn't her fault. Without all of that context she gets this story where Vi is trying to paint herself as the villian. She's the monster. She ran away. That's why she is to blame. When Vi opens her eyes expecting Caitlyn to finally understand and agree, she just gets no judgement. No disgust. I think that facet of the scene is powerful.
10:38 I love how they're posing. Yin and Yang. Different yet they compliment each other. Moreover, they *need* each other---Vi needs the emotional comfort Cait brings, and Cait needs the street smarts Vi has
Yes, they didn't know what (or who) they needed until they met each other... Caitlyn gives Vi a hope for herself, independent of Powder, and Vi gives Caitlyn purpose in life... Beautiful!
The cupcake scene is one of those layered things Arcane is so good at. It's not just Vi flirting with Caitlyn and probing about her sexuality, it's about Vi showing Caitlyn her world and immersing her in it. "See, enforcer, this is the world you had not clue about." But the next Cupcake scene is a deep contrast. Vi is vulnerable and needs help getting up. She is on her knees in front of an enforcer, all her superiority in navigating Zaun, feeling comfortable inside a city she hasn't been in years, despite all the changes Silco caused and seeing Caitlyn struggle to do so, is gone and Caitlyn comes into her own and helps a vulnerable Vi back on her feet and then does everything to save Vi. Caitlyn doesn't even hesitate to save Vi and navigate Zaun on her own. A lot of work went into creating two characters that are both contrasts and have many overlaps. Caitlyn is taller with a different body language while Vi is shorter and jacked, but Caitlyn is quite toned herself, they couldn't have a different upbringing but then realize they do share a specific way to see the world. Vi goes for personal up and close punching, while Caitlin uses a rifle to fight at a distances, but they represent a need to grow beyond throwing a punch or stay at a distance and use a rfile so Caitlyn gives away her rifle. Vander was Vi's caring, but flawed father figure, where Caitlyn had a strong mother and very caring father, reversing the usual roles, her mother showing up with a rifle and her father asking about injuries. And once again Arcane raises the bar with the dinner scene where now the roles are reversed and it's up to Vi to save Powder AND Caitlyn. She can't use her fists to solve this problem so she's in Caitlyn's shoes now, learn to use what she learned from Caitlyn to save Powder. It's amazing how you can keep finding interesting bits in Arcane like Vander who is a good man who makes terrible mistakes and Silco who is a horrible man who ends up doing some good, but both end up as failures. Vander failed Vi and Silco failed Powder, but Vander finds atonement and gives Vi the strength to carry on, and Silco gives the world the finger, destroys Powder and turns her into Jinx. The real secret of Arcane is that the characters all act according to their own logic and not according to the demands of a script.
Excellent analyses! Your insight into both Vi and Caitlyn's character are astute and spot on in my opinion... Nothing is clear cut in Arcane, everything seems to be working in opposites, but at the same time nothing is black and white. And the characters especially! I think you're right that the characters are not plot driven, the plot is character driven. I really like your parallel in fighting styles, Vi's "in your face" and Caitlyn's "at a distance..." and how they have to adapt and learn from each other, so Vi can save Caitlyn and herself with her hands tied. Nice! Though I love Caitlyn how she is, how her touches are soft and tender unlike Vi's, I can't wait to see Caitlyn punch someone, Jinx preferably 😂 It would be a natural progression for her, she is becoming more dark gradually (sad, but inevitable, I think...)
@@tildaowen Thanks, The videos are extremely useful in laying out the layered way Arcane is set up. It's a very good setup to how their dynamic works. Every bit as good as Five by Five's videos on She Ra. Check those out if you haven't seen them, the work they do on Catra is incredible. The scene with Jayce where Caitlyn is looking at the clues after the terror attack really struck me that Caitlyn is actually well-toned. Normally you see such characters depicted as opposites and Caitlyn would be all lean to emphasize the character. Arcane almost bursts at the seams with visual cues she's buff because it helps to show that while she is naive with a sheltered upbringing there is strength in her, mentally AND physically, and shares those traits with Vi. Caitlyn is emotionally stable, her weakness is that she hasn't been exposed to her own sexuality or hasn't seen Zaun as it truly is. I think she had natural pity for it, seeing them as nothing but victims. By contrast Vi has other emotional problems, but her sexuality isn't ambiguous, but she has to learn to trust others and use her feelings rather than charge all in like she does with Savika. It's amazing to see how both learn from each other because they have so much in common, even though they seem so different. Caitlyn is always openminded, Vi always assumes the worst will happen, but they share this common idea of making Zaun and Piltover a better place. I'm even going to make the point that to a certain degree it's Vi who is the Jinx. Most of what goes wrong in the early part is due to Vi making mistakes or because of misunderstandings. Vi insists Powder is ready when she clearly isn't, and only tags along because she would follow Vi to hell and back. Vi ends up being the one who makes the bigger mistakes. It's a bit of supreme irony Vi seals the issue by making sure she becomes Jinx.
@@rotwang2000 excellent point that Vi is the jinx! Jinx even says that Vi made Jinx, not Silco. Vi is essentially a parent to Powder and acts like it too in many ways: the protection, the encouragements, the responsibility she takes for her. But a parent also sets boundaries and teaches morals, and Vi fails to do this with Powder. And this definitely doesn't help Powder, who doesn't understand why Vi leaves her behind and disobeys her order. So Vi is the cause for many of Jinx's traumas and difficulties. But it is not her fault, because she is not Powder's mother and she herself is traumatised too... The same goes for Jinx, she is the cause for so much destruction, but whether it is entirely her fault is another matter.
@@rotwang2000 Oh, and I'll definitely check Five by five takes videos on She-ra, her videos on Arcane are great, and I liked She-ra (though it doesn't hold a candle to Arcane, but frankly very little does!)
@@tildaowen There is a lot of overlap between She-Ra and Vi as well as between Powder and Catra. The former try to take the burden of everything, as they are expected to over-achieve and set incredibly high standards for themselves while believing they never do enough to earn love. While the latter have huge attachment/abandonment issues and are afraid to love since they are deeply traumatized. They end up using the same abusive tactics as those who tormented them. To Catra/Powder-Jinx love is finite, if Vi/She-Ra has other friends beside them, then they will not longer get it. She Ra isn't meant to be super-deep and layered, but the writing is pretty solid. Arcane is like attending the premiere of Beethoven's Ninth, you're just blown away by the whole experience.
3:19 the fact that she has back tattoos, which she could not self apply, indicates that she had someone she trusted to cover her back, literally, with tattoos. Accepting someone at your back with a sharp implement is a dramatic show of trust. You couldn't trust someone to tattoo your back if your relationship was based on fear-- they could just shiv you from behind. (Or, you had to have some friend who could watch the artist work to ensure you didn't get shived while your back was turned.)
Yeah, Vi would have to trust the tattooist, but then again, prison tattoos are pretty common even in such a dangerous environment. And if a tattoo artist couldn't be trusted to do only that, then they would go out of business really quickly (or end up dead), so I'm not sure if her tattoos signify that Vi had someone she trusted on the inside...
I do think there must have been a trusted tattoo artist in prison, somebody who does just that and nothing else, not involved in any other shenanigans, just passing their time with putting art on people's bodies, no matter who they are. That in turn would give them a pass to not get hurt since they do what they do and Vi would have just trusted their art and skill to not be hurt by it, given the reputation the artist would have gained amongst the prison ranks.
Great video. You are actually the first RUclipsr I see (and I've seen quite a few) to touch on something that really stuck with me when I watched the show. When Vi first meets Caitlyn, she tells her: "You enforcers are all the same. Just asshole criminals in fancy uniform." But then, when Caitlyn has the opportunity to kill Sevika (because let's face it, if she wanted to kill her, she would have had no problem), she doesn't. She just disables her. And as much as Vi "scolds" her for letting Sevika go, I think that's a moment when Vi realizes that Caitlyn is not like other enforcers.
Thank you! And yes, I felt the same, Caitlyn is almost toying with Sevika, she's that skilled with a rifle, but she doesn't shoot to kill. Just like Vi doesn't fight to kill (as she sees Jinx do later).
Gees, I’ve seen the show twice all the way through and Vi is my favorite character, and I still didn’t have the keen observations you guys did!!!! I should read a character development book so I can appreciate these stories even more 🙌🏼 Beautiful video and beautiful insights!
@@tildaowen Hahahahaha!! Truth be told, I’ve watched the first act 5 times since I keep sharing the show with different friends and family, and I’m almost done for a 3rd time all the way through! I also bought Arcane art on Etsy. I’m also obsessed! I’m watching your other videos rn. Already subscribed🔥🙏🏼🙌🏼 Your analysis and insights are soooo spot on!
I can see why Vi is falling for Caitlyn. With a character like Vi she's always looking out for others whether that's supporting them or protecting them she never thinks about herself. The only person that gave her that support, protection, care, and love she gave others was Vander who she saw as a father figure but he's gone so she has no one. Vi went to prison for 5+ years possibly 14 years old when she went in there so she had to fend for herself on top of that she was constantly beaten by the prison guards. She learned to close herself off. Now released from prison because of Caitlyn she goes through hell looking for Powder. During her search she almost died, was captured, got shot at by Powder, and was rejected by the council. Throughout it all Caitlyn was right there. Caitlyn saved Vi from Sevika, she traded her gun she had for years that was specifically made for her for shimmer/medicine to help Vi get better, she took care of Vi when Vi was hurt, she was ready to give her own life up for Vi, and she pushed Vi away when Jinx was shooting at them saving Vi's life. Caitlyn comforted her when she needed someone to talk to, she spoke in Vi's behalf during the council meeting, and wasn't going to mention Jinx. Caitlyn showed the support, protection, care, and love that Vi hasn't had in a long time she even got mad at Jayce for disappointing Caitlyn. Caitlyn also taught her that not all topsiders were bad and that there are trustworthy enforcers. Caitlyn done so much for Vi in the span of a few days that gained Vi's trust. So all this is the reason why Vi is falling for her as for Caitlyn well in game Vi did say she had a sweet tooth for bad cops.
There are a lot of things that supports the argument that Vi falls in love with Caitlyn, and you list many of them 😊👍How can you not fall in love with a woman like Caitlyn who helps you like that? But falling in love is definitely not something Vi expects or wants when she meets Caitlyn, all she cares about is Powder and revenge. But all the pieces fit, and it just happens naturally 😊
I agree with what you say except for Caitlyn pushing Vi when Jinx shoots at them on the bridge. I think Caitlyn tried to wrap herself in front if Vi to shield her from the bullets. I think Vi pushed them apart. Their motives are the same so it’s a small difference and inconsequential to the discussion. Point well made.
@@jasonmkc7797 I think you're right, Caitlyn tries to shield Vi and take a bullet for her, while Vi pushes her out of the way. But yes, the point holds 😊
Oh god I'm so glad I stook upon your channel. Usually I overlook characters like Caitlyn but she left an inprint on my heart. I've been thinking why when I reailized: Caitlyn is inspiring. Let me explain my self. Most of the Arcane characters are traumatized, including Vi. But Cait has good parents who love her so she grew up as a stong (physically and spiritually) woman. But she does not abuse her powers. She improves her skills, sharpens her mind, she works hard to gain her independence and do what she thinks is right. She has her conflicts and struggles, but she takes care of herself, so she has the power to take care of others. She is wise enough to understand Vi's struggles, her coping mechanisms. She is not naive, more like inexpireinced about the world outside Piltower/her home, but is willing to learn. I think of Vander and how he never scolted Vi but was talking to her, was making sure Vi felt understood, not alone. And here we have Caitlyn who may be pissed by Vi's actions (like when Vi was eating), but when a situation is seriously dangerous/threataning, is compassionate. She listens to Vi, learns from her and gives her comfort. I think Vi acnolages Cait's good intentions and true nature (I mean Cait is TERRIBLE at lying) and feels that 'comforting vibes' she felt near her mother or Vander. Caitlyn IS sweet. She uses her strength to protect and comfort. She's shooting for saving live and making peace - even if it means to give up your special gun to save a reckless girl from the Undersity. I'm afraid we will see Caitlyn hardened in season 2. But I hope Vi will be there for her. They will be there for each other. Because they are both caring and value their familys. Thank you, Tilda Owen. I love and respect your analysises. Can't wait to see more from you. xxx
Forgot to meantion: Yes, I know the video is about Vi, but for some reason I felt like talking to someone about Caitlyn's qualities and why she may be so shooking for Vi's walls.
@@КорольТыкв-х3ц Thank you so much, comments like yours make it all worthwhile! Excellent points you make. Caitlyn is my favourite character too for many of the reasons you mention. Her sheltered upbringing is her gift and her curse, but it gives her the opportunity to show her good heart despite her background. And this is mirrored in Vi (just reversed), which make them so perfect for each other. Caitlyn is not as controversial, tragic or flamboyant as many of the other characters, so she is a character that for some people slips through the cracks, so they don't notice her, which is their loss! I myself didn't think of her as much more than a supporting character to Vi, until I saw the shower scene in episode 8. This scene stayed with me for sooo long, and I watched it over and over again, because it opened up her character so much (did you see my video about the scene? It mirrors some of the things you mention). But I too worry that she will harden in season 2,it is my hope that a softened Vi will counteract that...
@@tildaowen I I've seen your deep dive analyzes like yesterday and subscribed immediately. The way you talked about music and posture impressed me. Also, I never mused about symbolism that it was Jinx who wounded Cait and came back to finish her work. I was about to give feedback, but couldn't really put my thoughts together then. Now I think how Caitlun has a wound on her leg, meaning she is unsupported and caged once again (but not broken or surrendered, just how You proved in the analys). And in the end we see Vi supporting her. Right when Cassandra is about to die, probably... Oh god may they be happy. And may you be well and inspired. Thank You!!!
@@КорольТыкв-х3ц I thought as much, at one point I had to check and see if I had seen wrong and you were indeed commenting on the Caitlyn video. Am glad you liked them! Thanks a lot for your feedback and comments! ❤️ Any ideas as to what I can look into next? I was thinking either an analysis of the firelight opening to episode 7 or an analysis of gender and sexuality in Arcane. The latter would be a bit difficult for me, though, since it's not my expertise (I'm a literary and film analyst and teacher mainly, hence all the thoughts about music, setting and symbolism 😂) and though I am a lesbian, I'm not really well versed in aspects of gender or sexuality theory... But I like how the show portrays all types of people, women especially. I was also contemplating making lists, top ten (or five), such as best TV-show couples, best onscreen lgbtq+ couples (know who I'm thinking about here? 😉), best bad ass women, etc.
Gender and sexuality would be a tricky topic. It seems Arcane doesn't even have any social expectations about gender apperiance/sexuality. As one of the writers said (on her reddit, if I'm not mistaken???), it's even possible that there are ni such word as gay/lesbian/transgender in Arcane society. It seems like people just ask would "it be man or woman." And it's bizarre. But in a way that we are (probably) not able to imagine such a concept. I mean... I can imagine this consept, but I can't realize what it'd be like. I have the same feeling when I think about anarchy, communisme or even the articles in European languages (there no artices in my naitive language). I get the idea, I can imagine the consept (the dream if you want), but I know that I can't grasp it, expierince it. Oh, I hope I make sence. Well, to give people ideas, dreams is what writing is about, isn't it? Also, I've been thinking a lot about Caitlyn lately (in case You still haven't noticed 😂) and why I prefer her Arcane face to LoL's even thouh they're... almost the same??? And then I realized it's all because of the space between her upper teeth. It makes her face look more natural, human and interesting. And then I noticed Vi has a little croock on her nose, like she has it broken in Stillwater hold. But I haven't seen any videos about these details (or maybe I'm just a bad seeker, idk). I would loooooove to see Your analysis of the firelight opening or of gender/sexuality in the show. As to my ideas, have you ever thought of how Vander has his impact on Ekko's firelight "commune"? Vander used a family model to rule The Lanes, so does Ekko to build the commune and I think his consern about living, not only survival, is mirrored from Vander's actions. Or of how Vi follows his steps (full of anger, Vander had to face the consequences of his reckless actions and he softens after "finding a family"). Jeez, I miss Vander(((( Anyway, I'm exited to see Your next videos (analysis and lists)! best wishes! ❤❤❤
The fact that you sound like Caitlyn makes it really feel like your analyzing your own girlfriend because you are wondering why she likes you 🤣 As a lesbian, I can tell you that is the most gay thing ever and i love it!
😂😂 Cheap points, but I'll take them! And I'm totally busted, I wish she was mine, absolutely! But I realise that having a cartoon character as a girlfriend would be a rather sad existence... Oh, and she'd be totally bored with me that's for sure! 😂
@@tildaowen I think while dealing with Jinx she could use something boring. She'd probably find it relaxing 🤣 As for me I'm 100% Jinx kinnie and Jinx simp lol.
@@tildaowen It's sadly rare that I see a lesbian relationship in media that isn't two women with a shared bond of trauma. Vi and Caitlynn's attraction feels very organic without coming acrossed as idealized. They are two women who are going to struggle together with how they see the world. They spend a lot of the meet cute of their attraction not trusting one another even though they may have to admit their attraction to one another.
@@michaelwolf8690 You may have point, but I don't think that Vi and Caitlyn's bond is only due to the dire times they go through together. The circumstances only makes it happen faster. And I feel that their connection is a beautiful flower that develops despite of their situations, not just because of it (though the latter is also the case...)
Thing to notice: When Vander says "It's on you" during his talk about being a leader, Vi internalizes it and ends up blaming herself for how everyone died, why Powder became Jinx, and not being able to protect her from Silco even though it wasn't her fault that Marcus drugged and kidnapped her. She's the type that would be too harsh on herself even though she's human, much like Luisa Madrigal. So when Caitlyn and Vi were in her room and Cait tells Vi that "Whatever happened to your sister wasn't your fault", it serves as a parallel/contrast which was prominent enough for someone to compare both scenes on a Twitter post. I've been a League fan since late 2018 to early 2019 and have shipped Piltover's Finest aka Vi x Caitlyn so I'm glad that Arcane is shining light on the potential of their relationship. I already could tell that League Caitlyn sees League Vi as an equal, a person regardless of her background, and someone that will play an important part in helping Piltover and Zaun. And I could tell that League Vi saw Caitlyn as someone she could go to and someone that genuinely cares about the future of both cities like she does. Arcane Vi is already good for Arcane Caitlyn in the sense that she shows what the real world is like especially in the shoes of less fortunate Zaunite people, has other forms of intelligence such as street smarts which will help Arcane Caitlyn view more perspectives as a detective, understands and shares the same hopes in fixing the corruption in Piltover and Zaun, and so much more. Arcane Caitlyn is good for Arcane Vi in the sense that she's one of the few people from Piltover willing to see Arcane Vi as a person despite her Zaunite background and past shenanigans, helps Arcane Vi be more vulnerable and realize that she can't be too harsh on herself, is most likely to console Arcane Vi w/ her past pain and current issues, wants to help both cities even if it doesn't necessarily affect on her affluence and status, and more. I hope future Arcane seasons will allow these two and their relationship to continue blossoming.
Excellent comments and analyses! I can't really comment on the League references, since I've never played (I'm more into Tomb Raider and Uncharted), but I definitely see what you say how Vi and Caitlyn give each other new perspectives and open up their world views further. And in that sense they're really good for each other... Nice parallel between Vander and Caitlyn's words! Vi needed to hear both, but going forward I really feel that Caitlyn's non-judgmental approach is best for Vi. She needs to stop beating herself up so much if she wants to move forward, help her sister, herself, the undercity, etc.
When ekko tells Caitlyn......Vi said I could trust you, so you get a pass topside...I was floored For her to tell him that means that she really trusts Caitlyn. Episode 7. Had some great stuff.
Yes, episode 7 and 8 are my favourite, both because of the progression in Vi and Caitlyn's relationship, but also because of Ekko, I love him too. And though Vi knows him well from way back, she only just saw him again, so she shows both Ekko and Caitlyn an enormous amount of trust here, which surprises Caitlyn a lot... Love that scene 😊😂
Yeah, Vi is great, but I would argue that Vi is the strength and Caitlyn the heart... But then again, both of them have strength and heart, which is what makes them such a good match!
@@tildaowen Yes, both in their own way. I would say that Vi's love is more personal, more focused on her family and loved ones, her love for her sister being the center of the story, where Caitlyn shows more "impersonnal heart qualities" like compassion, sense of justice for all (beside her love for Vi of course). I particularly enjoy seeing a woman who fights fiercely every other episode but also shows herself to be vulnerable very often, I find that particularly touching. I watched all your videos today! It's nice to have a little more in-depth content on Arcane than just editing videos. It reminds me of Schnee's channel, I don't know if you know? He's also excellent. Did you have any other ideas for Arcane videos in mind? I'm about 9 months behind everyone else, but Arcane is completely overwhelming me (in a good way).
@@LeylaSKDR I almost envy you starting out! Arcane is wonderfully written, animated and scored. And yes, Vi is a wonderful protagonist, a badass woman who also lets herself be vulnerable ❤️ Caitlyn needs to do that more on a personal level! Thanks for watching, I'm actually releasing a new one later today (if all goes as planned...). I also made a watch list of some of my favourite Arcane videos, where obviously schnee is on, he's great! So check that out, it can give you an introduction to other video analysts out there 😊
I absolutely adore vi shes such a well done character. Like being a tough punch first then questions character WITH a sweet and soft heart??? It blows my mind away how well the creators wrote the characters
I love that you pointed out that her flirtation with Caitlyn at the brothel is not 100% sincere. It's a great scene, but as you said, this is not love at first sight. Caitlyn has been primarily bossy, rude, distrustful, and judgmental thus far, and she's either failed or barely passed all of Vi's previous tests. Telling Caitlyn to pretend to work in the brothel seems to have been both the final test and a ploy to distract her. You can see in Vi's body language, the way she pauses and says it almost mock-casually, that this is a test, and it's a big one because there's at least a mild implication that Vi may have worked there or had some other familiarity with the place. She also wants to ask the madam about Powder, who is her true goal, and she doesn't want Caitlyn there so that she can do exactly what we see her do--leave on her own if she gets a good tip. Hence distracting Caitlyn with a meaningless task, and unsettling her in the process. Perhaps whether or not Caitlyn passed this test was meant to determine whether Vi would come back for Caitlyn later or allow her to be "eaten alive" by the undercity? And it seems like Caitlyn fails the test, until Vi is on her way out and spies her enjoying being flirted with by another woman. I do think there is a bit of ambiguity here, not for us as viewers (we're obviously being shown all of this for a reason), but for Vi--she knows she just told Caitlyn to essentially fake-flirt with people for info, so if that were me, I wouldn't be entirely sure whether I was seeing that Caitlyn is less of a prude than I thought, but perhaps not being 100% sincere, or if I was getting an answer to my question. There is also the fact that Caitlyn never seems to know that Vi saw this, unless we're to believe that she saw Vi peripherally, which is never hinted at. The bedroom scene is breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly well-written and animated, but the seemingly intentional ambiguity about what actually occurred there after we cut away was... unfortunate. Overall, I really liked the development of the relationship in episodes 5-7 and was incredibly invested, but the way they handled Vi and Caitlyn like a "choose your own romance" in episode 8 has left a distinctly sour taste in my mouth for many, many reasons that wouldn't fit in this already long comment. By the way, others may have pointed this out as well, but the bedroom scene was the early morning of the 4th day, so they had known one another for approximately 3 fulls days at that point, not 4-5 days. (Amanda Overton, one of the show's writers, even misremembered it as 2 days.) The season finale at the tea party is the night of day 5.
Again, wow, I love your astute comments, I really want to return the favour, but I will do it a little at a time (don't have much of time at the moment). The first thing that I wanted to comment on is the last thing you mention here: how long time has gone by. This is in a sense not really important, because what matters is what happens to them and how they react to it and to each other. Time is irrelevant when you're going through traumatic and exciting events. On the other hand, it is relevant because how can two people form such a deep attachment in such a short time? When I was researching my first video, I looked into it, and here's what I came up with (premise: the actions and events occuring in both Piltover and the undercity happen chronologically as we are shown them): DAY 1, episode 4 +5: Caitlyn arrives at Stillwater late at night, she arranges to free Vi from prison (do they sleep at night? we don't know, depends at what ungodly hour, Caitlyn visits the prison...) DAY 2, episode 5: the next time we see them, it is broad daylight. We see them parkour, have lunch, visit "The Last Drop", etc. While this is happening, we see the concert in Piltover, which I assume is in the evening. So the brothel scene and the fight with Sevika is late at night. DAY 3, episode 6: They escape to the hideout/Vi's old place in the dark of night or early morning. Vi sleeps (or is passed out), and (later?) Caitlyn ventures out to get a potion. Parallel events: We see the morning after for Mel and Jayce, Jinx is at the bar, which is empty so it's during the day. When the council ousts Heimerdinger, the light looks like it's close to sundown, and when Jinx lights the flare we see a dark sky and stars above her. DAY 4, episode 7: Vi and Caitlyn wake up the next morning in chains and go out into bright sunlight with Ekko. At night they go to the bridge where they have the showdown with Jinx. DAY 5, episode 8: When they sneak into Caitlyn's bedroom the sun's just coming up, pink skies and long shadows on the bed. In the evening they go to the council, the scene in the rain is definitely at night. DAY 6, episode 8-9: I'm assuming Caitlyn's shower is in the morning, because why would she shower twice in a day (she had cleaned up between being in bed with Vi and standing before the council)? Also, I think Vi and Jayce, even though they were reacting quickly, had to do a little preparing before hitting the shimmer factory... Mel meets her mother in the light of day, long shadows are cast when Viktor says goodbye to Sky's ashes, and the sun is going down when Silco meets with Jayce. Vi's fight with Sevika and Jinx's Tea Party take place in the evening and night on the sixth day. Apart from the last two episodes, each episode basically spans a day. So I stand by them knowing each other 4-5 days (because they meet so late at night on the first day) :-)
@@tildaowen We are breaking up the days in roughly the same way, I just tend to smash them meeting at the prison into their day in the the undercity, partly because the timeline of the prison stuff is confusing (did she go there at night and come back for Vi the next morning, or maybe just stay there all night waiting on the paperwork to go through? Or did she get Vi released at night and they spent the night somewhere? Or was everything in the prison actually the very early morning of the day they explored the undercity?) and partly because their interaction was so brief. So in my mind, by the time they are in the bedroom, it's the early morning of day 4, so they've known each other for approximately 3 full days at that point. But yes, I agree that the quality of their time is more important than the quantity of it, though both are somewhat relevant in their own ways. It makes complete sense to me that two people thrown into such chaotic life-or-death circumstances would be able to develop a strong bond very quickly because such things tend to cut through all of the social BS about getting to know someone and show you who they are at their core. I mean, if we can grow to love Vi and Cait so much after what amounts to approx an hour of screen time for Caitlyn and 2 for Vi, then it doesn't seem like a stretch that they could develop strong feelings for each other over a few days! However, actually processing and understanding one's own feelings, and being sure of the exact nature of someone else's feelings, in such chaotic circumstances and over such a brief period of time, may not be so quickly accomplished, or may not be accomplished at the same rate or in the same way for each of them. This is where many of my questions lie (possibly by intention?). I do really enjoy the depth of your thoughts, so yes, I would love to hear more of them when you have the time!
@@jubimadethis Me too! I enjoy it immensely, part of the reason why I do these videos is to have these discussions after, and your comments are next level 😊👍 I definitely wonder about the unspoken (or unshown) moments: such as the general time span (when there's no sunlight in the undercity, time loses meaning), Vi's time in prison, the time between their heart to heart in bed and the council meeting, the time gap from ep 3 to 4... I usually don't care so much about this, especially because stories have to cut away the not so important parts to further the plot, etc, etc. But everything in Arcane is so full of meaning, you need to dig into the skipped parts to understand the rest fully... Does that make sense? I totally understand how Caitlyn and Vi can fall in love in the short time, and I agree, if we can get so worked up about them in such a short time (it's very funny and also quite sad how much time I've spent on them 😂), so can they. But I also think that dire times makes you act on your feelings faster, so even though I was very surprised when Caitlyn said "what about us", I also bought it and felt she was incredibly brave to ask it. Heroic in my opinion, and in that moment Vi was a chicken, but I totally understand her twisted sense of responsibility (guilt, really) and protective instinct that made her reject Caitlyn. They need a proper talk, but with Jinx probably killing Caitlyn's mother, the dire times will continue, so I'm guessing we're going to see some spontaneous leaps in their relationship both good and bad. Okay, I'm not sure I actually replied to all you commented, if any at all, I'm rambling really... I'll get back to it, promise 😁
@@tildaowen I had the same reaction to Caitlyn's "What about us?" I was surprised, but I didn't question it and thought it was brave (even if I wasn't sure she fully considered what she meant herself when she asked it). They had obviously shared a meaningful moment of genuine connection just based on what we were allowed to see. It didn't even occur to me on my own that her words might refer to something significant that had happened offscreen. I have a lot of things to say about the way time is handled in the show (especially with regards to the above), and Vi's reasons for bailing on Caitlyn, but I'm trying to hold back and not keep giving you more to respond to! However... "it's very funny and also quite sad how much time I've spent on them 😂" I know exactly what you mean! It's more than a little embarrassing...
Ha ha, obsessing and living vicariously through others... GUILTY! It is embarrassing to me, I've only told three people irl that I'm actually making these videos...! It's SO revealing 😂 And they haven't even seen my videos, because they haven't seen "Arcane", so... And this is the real reason for these revealing videos: the lack of people irl to discuss Arcane with. So thank you for indulging my guilty pleasure! And please, keep your comments coming, I'll get to them, I promise! I agree, I'm not sure Caitlyn knew what she was asking, it was quite spontaneous on her part. Because though there are many theories (some of them rather racy), I don't think much more happened between Vi and Caitlyn in the bed than hand-holding and sleeping (they haven't had a good nights sleep for 3-5 days, they must be exhausted! Most of the rest they had was while they were passed out). At most a kiss. Because if they had done more, Caitlyn would definitely have thought about that reminiscing in the shower. I actually expected it the first time I saw the shower scene. When Caitlyn started seeing Vi walking backwards, I expected to see even further back in time to the bed scene. But no. And to wait for season 2 to show that makes no sense to me (apparently a tweet from one of the writers has warranted this idea).
I've said it before but it's worth saying again: this is honestly one of the best romance stories I've ever seen committed to screen. Subtle but obvious, quiet yet powerful. Just masterful writing.
Someone else pointed that out to me too, I did it unintentionally, but came rather close! I guess some of the characteristics of the game spilled over...
I must say your narration is hypnotizing. A mature, alluring voice to tie dialogue to captivating scenery, much like a nature documentary. I look forward to your future content.
Love your video! a really great deep dive in the character I think Vi flirted with Caitlyn to test the waters to see if she can trust her fun fact: in an interview with the creators they said that in season 2 it will be closer to the big picture ththey had Vi and Caitlyn
Thank you, that means a lot! I also think she's testing the waters in more ways than one. Even to the point where I almost think she flirts with Caitlyn inadvertently, she can't help herself (being love starved and Caitlyn being cute)
Oh, I hope that's true! It would definitely be a huge let down if it comes to nothing. And we know that practically everything in the show happens for a reason...
This is among one of the best pairings in shows PERIOD. Also, this has been one of my favorite videos ever! I always enjoy these types of videos, the deep dives, this is what makes a great topic look great.
Don't know if it was intentional or if I'm interpreting too much into it, but I really like that both Powder/Jinx and Caitlyn have blue hair. They are both important people to Vi and share that similarity. I bet her hair reminds Vi of Powder and how much she cared for her and still does, how she wants her back. Caitlyn is someone she can love and trust, just like Powder. And she has blue hair, just like Powder.
Exactly! We're supposed compare Caitlyn with Powder (they're both good marksmen too!) and with the mother too, who looks even more like Caitlyn (or vice versa) 😊
@@tildaowen One of the cool things about this with their in-game characters as well is that Caitlyn has one of the longest attack ranges in the game and is geared toward a stat called critical hit meant to represent hitting a weak point, and is portrayed in the show as a sharpshooter who prefers to coolly examine problems from a distance so she can figure out where the most vulnerable point is and attack it with precision; while Jinx in-game has an attack range much closer to herself and is all about *either* a flurry of light attacks when people are close (minigun) *or* explosive force at longer ranges (rocket launcher, grenades, missile), and in the show pretty much either blows things up at a debatably safe distance, or just attacks recklessly and furiously with no concern for her own safety (with a side of disabling enemies she doesn't believe she can take, which also follows from one of her in-game abilities). Vi in-game is an up-close melee attacker who can close distances quickly and take some damage with a built-in shield, and we see her tendency to rush in many times throughout the show; her "guard" is maybe not up to snuff yet, but there's every chance she'll learn to work on this in the next season, since it's been brought up several times ("you still block with your face" "your guard needs working"). I love how they used their already stellar ability to design characters with unique feels and playstyles to direct the writing and personality of those characters in the show. I also started playing the game not long before Vi was introduced, and Jinx was introduced not long after; they've both been some of my favorite go-to characters ever since.
@@DarthRayj Thanks for the insight into the game! I never played, and despite loving Arcane I don't think I ever will (I'm into single player adventure like Tomb Raider and Uncharted), so it's good to meet someone who knows 😊
@@tildaowen Super understandable! I'd definitely not recommend playing League unless you have a good group of friends to play with, it isn't really worth it otherwise. I mostly do prefer single-player RPGs myself so I feel ya!
Before season 2 came out, i never thought their relationship was rushed. They have a lot of chemistry and its undeniable that they definitely found each other attractive, at the very least. So its not really a big deal whether how fast or not they fall in love.
I don't think speed is an issue either, there were just voices after season 1 that claimed it was not real romantic love, because how could two complete strangers fall in love after just a couple of days... People fall in love at first sight sometimes! But I wanted to disprove the timeline (they have been together all hours of the day for more than full four days when they're in Caitlyn's bed episode 8), and I also wanted to explain why such initial bitter enemies could overcome those obstacles and fall in love. What do they find in each other? That intrigues me...
@ oh absolutely! Thank you for that!! Your videos left me appreciating their relationship even more 👏🏻. And yesss, i keep on seeing so many people on my social media timeline commenting thag its rushed bla bla bla and it bores mee to tears 😭
@@madameshahira4483 thank you, yes it annoys me too, because they’re trying to take something away from one of the most beautifully told love stories I’ve ever seen, imo. Arcane is masterful storytelling through good writing and excellent animation that reveals so much through body language ❤️
Beautiful analysis! You make it easy to follow your thinking throughout the narrative. I'd also add what is, I suppose a sort of Freudian detail, which is that Caitlyn looks conspicuously like Vi's mother from the opening flashback--the narrow face, the same hair color, and general color scheme...underlining for us perhaps a subconscious reason Vi would be quicker to trust Caitlyn and quicker to become attached to her in the first place. There's even a moment when Caitlyn returns to Vi with medicine where she says Vi's name and Vi sees instead of Caitlyn an image of her mother--which is I think a pretty purposeful superimposition.
Thank you, and well-spotted! I saw the similarity between Caitlyn and Vi's mother too and guessed at the connection, but the way you put it that it is a subconscious reason for why Vi is inclined to trust Caitlyn is really well said! Thanks for that 😊👍
I already loved their relationship but your analysis made me only love it so much more. You have such an enriching voice, it gave me great comfort! Thank you, I can't wait to see more!
Another great video! This really helped contextualize for me several aspects of their mutual development. I just noticed something else in the scene after the Sevika fight -- how smart and restrained of Caitlyn to stay at a distance even though Vi is clearly hurt. After an entire day of Vi giving her the runaround, Caitlyn forces Vi to choose to take steps toward respecting and trusting her, towards being a team. As you said, it's a huge step for Vi to ask for help, but Caitlyn also had to make room for that ask.
Thank you so much! And you make an excellent point about Caitlyn staying back, which I also make in my next video "Why does Caitlyn fall for Vi?" 😉 Great minds!
I think you analyzed the brothel scene quite well. It felt like there was more to it it than just flirty dialogue but I could never put my finger on it. Well done.
Thank you! I never saw the scene as where they suddenly found out that were into each other, no this scene is about Vi pushing her weight around as well as putting the audience on the path of shipping them together.
Vi grew up with a reasonably happy family but she was largely in charge of chaotic children and often contradicted by adults. She went away to prison for years and was constantly attacked by others. Caitlynn is maybe the first person who had her back, trusted her when she had a plan, stood behind her without having to be cajoled or bribed. That kind of support would be overwhelming even with everything going on in Vi's life. While Caitlynn is from a caste that Vi blames for her problems, she is a woman consumed with the same desire for justice that Vi has. She demonstrates it from the very beginning with Caitlynn is outraged that Vi is treated. Their relationship is forged in that common sense of uncompromised justice. Mrs Kiranman also being a stubborn humanitarian champion in the council probably helps convince Vi of Caitlynn's virtue as well. Caitlynn is a fighter, constantly struggling against the rules of her world, and Caitlynn's disregard for the rules of her society in favor of the greater good is always a bonding moment between Caitlynn and Vi because the more Caitlynn lets that image of propriety and wealth slide away the more Vi sees of herself in Caitlynn.
Good interpretation of Vi and Caitlyn! But I'm not sure that I see Caitlyn's mother as a stubborn humanitarian... She has protégés, yes, and though Jayce definitely owes a lot to her, Mrs. Kiramman does it for her own benefit too. We see this in how fast she drops Jayce in episode 2. And Vi sees none of this at the council, and I don't think Caitlyn has told her anything about her mother at this point. I think it is purely Caitlyn's virtue that wins over Vi...
I just wanted to tell you that every time I miss CaitVi too much I come back to your videos and I feel like the first time I saw them: surprised about the amount of quality detail and how well written this show is - and also full of love because i just need them to be happy. Thanks for such a quality content and amazing analysis! 🥰
I know this video is about Vi and yet here I find myself falling for Caitlyn still. Your analysis is wonderful. Thoughtful, intelligent, and I love how you expose the feelings and emotions behind the characters interactions and actions. Nothing about Vi and Caitlyn developing feelings for each other felt rushed to me and you explained more than well why. Because they're not rushed at all. Both girls have their development, their personalities and character and their feelings developed in time accordingly. I've seen couples on tv complementing each other before. But Caitlyn and Vi, just like Arcane as a whole, are something else entirely. Arcane is a tragedy but with Caitlyn and Vi we can see some of that light at the end of the tunnel. I caught on how the Cupcake nickname was probably used to taunt Caitlyn at the beginning, and I love so much that Caitlyn grows fond of that nickname as Vi starts using it as a term of endearment. Because it's true, Cait is sweet like a cupcake❤ And Vi now knows it. Also I noticed how the moment Caitlyn talks to Ekko about helping everyone in Zaun is definitely the moment Vi sees the full picture of what kind of person Caitlyn is and realizes she's fallen in love with this girl. Caitlyn's words in that scene took me by surprise too. And as much as the words "Vi has a good heart" are heard a couple of times throughout Arcane, to me Caitlyn has the biggest, softest, purest heart I've seen. Caitlyn is a character that surprised me as much as she surprised Vi. For years and years I get convinced the world sucks, people suck, that nothings gonna change and that nobody cares. And here is Caitlyn risking it all to HELP and SAVE people. To HEAL. She definitely blew me away with her values. She is incredible. I just find your video and if you have more analysis on Vi and Caitlyn like this one I'll sure check your channel. I know I'd love to watch a video like this one from Caitlyn's perspective. Beautiful, beautiful video✨👏
Thank you for your comment and your excellent reflections on Caitlyn's character! She's definitely my favourite too for the reasons you say. She's not perfect, she's ignorant and biased to begin with, but she learns from her experiences and is open to seeing things from other perspectives, which is a huge part of why I love her. That and her enormous heart, as you say 😊 In the future I fear she may become darker (I made a Caitlyn video, not quite like this one, but it takes a deep look into her character where I talk about this) and she needs to set some boundaries with Vi, so Vi doesn't make all decisions on their behalf. But Caitlyn's outlook on life so far is inspiring, the world would be a better place if there were more people like her... A badass with a big heart 😊❤️
@@tildaowen Of course she isn't perfect, I see the product of her sheltered life. A blessing and a curse. But her good qualities are so many and so huge that I admit not paying much attention to her flaws sometimes😅 And I spend my rewatches enjoying seeing her and listen to her. I'm not *too* worried about Caitlyn being hardened next season. I have hope her mother will survive the attack, even if my only hope comes from Caitlyn having bother her parents alive in the game... But I think she'll face some new and heavy responsibilities. And I'm sure there will more angst between her and Vi. With Jinx being full on public enemy #1 now and everything. There's also the few lines of them from the S2 sneak peak indicating as much. Though maybe they'll find a way to sort things out throughout S2. One of the writers confirmed that eventually Vi will make some choices that wouldn't make sense if her feelings for Caitlyn weren't strong. So I'm excited for that as well.
@@psgamer-0199 I know what you mean, I enjoy watching Caitlyn too, and when I watch a video about the show in general that doesn't mention her, I'm annoyed and surprised at how she can be ignored so 😂 I think her role will be larger in season 2 (the teaser seams to indicate that), then again that could just be my Caitlyn obsession talking 😂
@@tildaowen Yes! Same! If a video talks about an specific topic or character that has nothing to do with Caitlyn, that's ok. But if the video talks Arcane in general and doesn't touch on her, then it's not an Arcane video I would enjoy much lol I hope season 2 will have Caitlyn in every episode and I want to see so much of her. I hope for more flashbacks of her too. More with Grayson, her friendship with Jayce and of course her growing up with her parents. I can't wait.
Just wanna mention, the scene where Vi glances over to Caitlyn in the brothel; Take a look at the clip of Caitlyn chilling with the other lady. If I could I'd probably write up an entire essay about that scene but I just wanna point out, that although Greek Mythology probably doesn't exist in universe, Caitlyn looks a lot like the goddess Artemis. Artemis is known for being surrounded by women, in particular nymphs and she's tied in pretty well to plants and in particular deer. Now I'm not quite sure about a peacock, but there is a bow and a quiver of arrows leaning against the bird, the standard weapons of Artemis. I feel like in that scene, Vi kinda sees Caitlyn as a goddess. And not just any goddess, but a goddess known for both beauty and hunting. It shows Vi that Caitlyn is really willing to go in and get what she wanted not shying away from the usually looked down on aspects of the undercity. Personally I think it's this exact moment that Vi goes from seeing Caitlyn as, "yeah, she's hot, people would like her" to "damn I think she's pretty hot."
Excellent observations! Have you seen Stop Me Oh's video of that scene? She talks about a lot of what you mention (and more), watch that if you haven't! I actually think that scene is only in there for the audience, in order to make us ship Caitlyn and Vi together. In order for us to see a romance developing, we need to have it out in the open which way the characters swing, hence first the "you're hot cupcake" --> Now we know which way Vi swings, and then this scene where we find out where Caitlyn's interests lie. In order for this scene not to be all about that (and boring), they've dressed it up in hunting paraphernalia to support Caitlyn's character as a huntress like Artemis/Diana. Artemis shoots from afar and doesn't miss, unexpected sudden death back in Ancient Greece was seen as coming from her (or her twin Apollon). We also see Caitlyn running around in the woods in the beginning of the episode, so I think your comparison to Artemis is spot on! Oh, and Artemis is also a virgin, beautiful and pure, much like Caitlyn is naive coming into a place like the brothel. But... I seriously don't think that Vi spots any of this... She doesn't strike me as refined in that way (and as you say, Greek Mythology doesn't exist in this world), so this info is in my opinion for the audience and our interpretation, adding layers to Caitlyn. Vi sees that she is comfortable, relaxed and flirting with another woman. So she sees that she's not a biased and violent enforcer, and she's into women. So "yeah, she's hot, people would like her" to "yeah, she's hot, and now I have a shot!" :-D
@@paperstar7474 Thank you right back for your interesting interpretation! Similar to Stop Me Ohs, but you expand on it :-) She has made quite a few good videos about Arcane and Caitlyn and Vi, check those out too :-)
I just stumbled upon your analysis for Arcane. While many are fantastic, there's something special about how you analyze the emotional make-ups of these characters. Well done!
5:50 YES i mean the kabedon is making my heart flutter as a viewer but in story vi truly is keeping a distance with cait and testing her, it's definitely early to call that love. And i love that, it's so realistic, up till this point the two were distant and on each others toes and slowly vi is warming to cait
Thank you for all your time stamped comments, I'm glad my video is engaging you 😊 I agree with what you say, except that Vi has forgotten the new Jinx name, because this is ringing in her ears since Sevika mentions it! She knows exactly what that name entails, not something she would easily forget! Which is also why it is telling that for a few minutes, Powder/Jinx is out of her mind because of the close proximity of Caitlyn... 😍
This is absolutely fantastic! More, please! I just finished Season 2! I think I'm going to rewatch the whole thing all over again. Keep up the great videos!
The way this video details the progression of their relationship is fantastic! You did a great job piecing together their emotions in all of these scenes, which is hard to do as you're watching since Arcane is more of a "show and not tell" kind of show. They really had so much depth of emotin even in season one alone, I'm kinda surprised they were able to pull that off. Seriously one of the most heartfelt connections between two characters in a series, ever!
I couldn’t agree more. And one of the reasons their relationship, and the show in general, is so intriguing, is precisely because it’s show not tell. We have to dig into what they’re showing us to get the full meaning ❤️
this is a wonderful video!! I love everything you have to say about them and feel the same. there is one point I might debate - that she didn't have anyone she was close to in prison (platonic or not). I initially assumed the same but realizing that a large portion of her tattoos are on her back in impossible to reach locations, she must have had someone she trusted enough to do them for her. maybe it was an old friend from her childhood that ended up in stillwater too, but I think it would be more interesting if it's later revealed that she actually built a trusting relationship with someone while locked up, enough where she could put herself in such a vulnerable position as to literally have them stabbing a needle into her back without worrying that she'd be attacked. then again maybe I am way over analyzing it and there was just some known inmate tattoo artist that she hit up haha.
Thanks! Yes, it's frustrating knowing so little about all those years in there! She must have talked to someone, but the creators of the show go out of their way to show how miserable it was for her in there, so we can assume that whoever it was wasn't close at all. Getting tattoos seems like a vulnerable situation, but I think if you can't trust the tattooist, then he/she won't have any customers...
@@tildaowen Yea, I'd lean toward the tattoo artist was just trusted by everyone because if they weren't, they probably wouldn't have continued tattooing (in one way or another, depending on how badly they disappointed someone and how dangerous they were).
@@DarthRayj Exactly my point 😊 So even though it is potentially vulnerable to have some stab you in the back repeatedly (lol!), I think it's a typical prison thing to do, the inmates trusting the tattooist...
Vi is a character with a life punctuated with tragedy and quite literally has not felt comfort or safety in years. I think Caitlyn gives Vi the space to express herself, she gives her a sort of stability. Vi has always been the listener, the warm hand on her loved ones' shoulders, a position that she tries to settle into as soon as she finds Powder again and fails through no fault of her own. But with Caitlyn, she gets to be cared for and she receives the gentle and careful touch. She finally gets the space, since Vander, to express her feelings and doubts without the fear of causing any damage. She's not Caitlyn's 'caretaker' like she was for Powder or Ekko. It's like she finally gets to be more than an elder sister. She gets to explore her own self in a totally different way. And Caitlyn is willing to listen, Caitlyn is receptive to her and shows that she cares through her touch and physical presence. Something that must do wonders for a touch starved ex-prisoner
Exactly, yes, the dynamics with Caitlyn are totally different, Vi doesn’t need to be the one responsible when she’s with Caitlyn, Cait is perfectly capable of taking care of both herself and Vi at the same time 😍
Artistic thing, Vi’s features soften up when she’s around Caitlyn. You can see that when she lays in bed with her that her features soften up and adds to her Vulnerability in more emotional scenes :)
Yes, it's adorable! She is normally so tough and aggressive that it's such a revelation to see those soft eyes 😊 Katie Cooke has a great bit about in her overlooked moments video. Caitlyn definitely has an effect on her!
Sorry for being late to reply! A very good done analysis, and beautiful! It's perfect, catches every detail of our lovely couple. Your explanation about the cupcake meanings it's so on point: i never thought about it but it makes complete sense. One thing i always thinks is how Vi and Cait felt alone in different ways: for Vi was the loneliness that brings responsibility. She felt alone being the older sister to raise and protect Powder, she felt alone when she was the leader of the gang. Then came the total loneliness of imprisonment: severed from the world, lost everything in a single night, i can't even begin to think at how horrible and devastating this was for her. Sorry for the long comment, but your video is food for thoughts! Bear with me, i don't like going around "shilling" myself, but there's a couple of things in your analysis that i wrote and would like to share. I wrote a fanfiction about Vi's prison years, so i can say a couple of things i imagined happened in Stilwater that you mentioned in your analysis. just my headcanon! She made some aquantainces in prison, at least one friendly, as the word friendly can be applied to someone known in prison: there is no trust basically, everyone can count only on themselves. In my case are two tattoists/mercenaries women, a shuriman and a freljordian that teaches Vi tattoing and then helps her for arms and back tattos, that Vi designed herself. She even end up working with them, developing a more deep friendship. And yes, good thing you noticed something that many overlook: it's a mixed prison, where women that cannot defend themselves are victims of men. Vi of course will never be one of them: she will end up being their bane actually! But she gets abused a lot by guards: the worst part is that if she defend against guards she gets trhown in solitary, and it's a nightmare in Stilwater. So she ends up not even trying to react against guards beatings. In my fic she is fourteen when Marcus buries her in prison: her first years she gets beaten a lot by both guards and some inmates. Things changes when she is sixteen and she grow up phisically becoming stronger, more skilled in fighting, someone to not mess with. Caitlyn loneliness comes from the constant interference of her parents and Piltover's high society behaviours. To better explaining myself i'll quote what she says to Vi in a conversation from a fic i wrote (sorry, but it's really better than anything i can comment): - "Everything i got were the fake friendships of the rich and powerful, the insincere flattering of people who aimed to enter my parents grace using me as mere mean, as if i was just a fucking object, non a person!" she shouts, her voice broken, angry as Vi never seen her! Cait is unburdening a lot of repressed grief and she needs to let it all out, so she wait patiently, even if all she wants is to reassure her lover instantly "And in the Force! My colleagues just keep laughing behind my back, no one takes me seriously: they just tolerate me because i am a fucking Kiramman! I despise my family's name with all my heart, it has never done nothing good for me!" "Jayce was a friend, of course, but even with him i was never sure if he just wanted to please my parents who financed his research: that's the level of paranoia i constantly lived, live in! Grayson was the only one who understood and accepted me as i am, who treated me as a person, respecting my choices and encouraging me: when i lost her i was alone again." "You're not alone anymore, my love! I'm here with you, for you: forever!" Vi cups her cheeks, staring deep in Cait's eyes, reaching to her soul. Cait wipes her tears and manage to put a smile on "I know, Vi: you are the truest person i've ever met." - I hope i wasn't annoying, as i said i don't like to go around saying "i wrote this, i wrote that!" It was just a way to express better my thoughts :) Anyway, again, great analysis!
Thank you, it's worth the wait :-) Your thoughts on loneliness are really good, because they have been isolated both of them at opposites ends of the scale (I think schnee says something about this in his CaitVi video), and this loneliness makes them open to attachment to someone who compliments them in a manner of ways. And the fact that they are together 24/7 for approx. 4 days straight helps too (and the whole saving each other, etc, etc), it helps dispell the loneliness... And thanks for the fanfic, it's good. And it sort of writes itself, doesn't it? There's so much depth in their characters and so much is left to interpreatition that there's loads to expand on!
This video just so sweet which makes me ship them more also caitlyn is really pretty and kind which is why vi fell for her. Vi reminds me of my crush in real life who is a tomboy like her except that shes not a tough girl and coincindentally i relate to caitlyn a lot since im sheltered with strict parents like her so i imagine us as vi and caitlyn where im blushing now thinking about it
Love the way you have laid this all out. I strongly agree with you on all sides. I do hope that they show more of Caitlyn's passed. Can't wait for the next chapter. Thank you
Aargh, the first time I saw the scene, I held my hands before my eyes and yelled "No!" much like Vi. I didn't see the glimpse of Caitlyn's head till the second time I saw the whole thing 😂
@@tildaowen It's ok...they got EVERYONE with that bit...even people who've played the game and knew she wouldn't die. . There was always that brief moment where nobody could be sure, and the anxiety in that span was off the charts.
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Glad I'm not the only one... So people think, that if a character is a champion, they won't be killed off? Or is something else pointing to that? Like the fact that she's the sheriff in the game and she isn't that yet in the show?
@@tildaowen That's the general assumption...and I think its valid since, while they want to tell their own story, they do still want it to connect at least in concept. But, they may surprise us.
I love your analysis. Seems we have the same infatuation with the coupling and caitlyn herself. Please never stop speaking about this show, it's was a great listen on the way home from work. X
I know it's an unpopular opinion but honestly I feel Caitlyn deserves better. She was the one who made all the first step without asking anything. I just hope she will be more developed in season 2 and will be more badass and clever (I mean come on cleverness is supposed to be her main quality) but if she turn out to be the character who will always chase after Vi and always support her without once again never asking for anything then I think this would be a waste (like many others lesbian relationship actually)
I feel that Caitlyn and Vi are a good match especially because it's not just Vi calling all the shots, and though she makes a few key decisions for them, I think Caitlyn will not continue to let Vi control everything. She does deserve better... Have you seen my Caitlyn video? In it, I mention Caitlyn's anger at Vi for making all the decisions... And Caitlyn is badass, let's hope that doesn't go as overlooked in the next season as in the first...
@@tildaowen I hope too because right now I just feel like Caitlyn is Vi's second choice / second option in the way that "if she can't have her sister back well at least there is still Caitlyn that exists" and I don't like it at all..That's why I said Caitlyn deserves far better for now but just my pov (oh and no I haven't seen your Caitlyn video yet but I will definitely watch it !)
@@sabri3917 I think the teaser trailer for season 2 heavily suggests that Vi has to make a choice, or at least who she picks first... I'm just not sure that she will pick Caitlyn (the show being a tragedy...), but my hope is that Caitlyn's arc will develop free of that triangle as well...
I completely understand your frustration. Vi is actually my favorite character, but I also noticed how one-sided S1 was between them. It makes sense because all of that protection and support is part of why Vi fell in love with Caitlyn, but Caitlyn needs to learn how to set some boundaries in terms of how she expects to be treated, and Vi needs to find better ways to manage her trauma and rage and avoidant tendencies. If it helps, I actually think that the shower scene was Caitlyn deciding NOT to chase after Vi this time, because Vi hurt her deeply and enough is enough, but then Jinx showed up to ironically drag her right back to Vi. Jinx seems to almost act as a vessel of Fate, drawing them together over and over again. At the same time, she seems likely to be a major factor keeping them apart in S2, at least romantically. I also have to think that if adding the shower scene, which wasn't in the script, was that important, then the emotional fallout from the oil and water scene will be addressed in some way in S2, not just swept under the rug.
Excellent video Tilda Owen. Especially on how you analyze Vi's character development and her connection to Caitlyn. I actually heard about how Vi and Caitlyn's interaction and relationship change each other, but this video is unique and special in its own right. I actually had a feeling that there's more to the infamous "You're hot, cupcake" scene, than what we have seen. Perhaps you can make a video on how Caitlyn's interactions with Vi change her outlook on life or for more Arcane videos, you can make a video about Vander and Warwick's connection, Silco's character, Mel's character, possible characters to appear and events to occur for Arcane season 2, and Heimerdinger's character and his newfound friendship with Ekko. That's all I can give you, but overall, great analysis and video about this topic. I love it!
Thanks a lot! It's hard to say something new about a subject so well analysed, but I wouldn't make a video if I didn't think, I had something to add... Thanks for your suggestions, at the moment I'm working on a video about the setting of the show, but I can't avoid (or help) touching on some of the characters you mention 😊
I love the brothel scene. Like, Caitlyn turned from rich girl first time on the street to a bar goer in the same episode. She might be awkward at first but she doesn't adhere to the bias Piltover put up and ended up enjoying a conversation with that hostess. Vi gave some advices but even she got surprised that Caitlyn actually followed her advice and somehow landed a lady. She listened to Vi, she gave result, she's honest, she's hot. Why does Vi fall for Caitlyn? I mean how couldn't she?
I'm with you, I find Caitlyn irresistible on so many counts, from her big heart and clever mind to her awkwardness and altruistic outlook ❤️ Though it's not as obvious as with Vi, she's actually very resilient, adapting to most situations thrown at her...
Fantastic video, thank you! Caitlyn is my favorite character from Arcane, with Vi being a close second, so I've absolutely loved the development of their relationship and you did such a great job analyzing it. Thanks!
Great insight into the origin of the Cupcake nickname. I took the "sweet" explanation to be the whole of it, but there's more to it than that - as always with Arcane! I should have known there would be. Everything, every word and every frame and every scene, has more thought behind it than many shows manage in entire seasons.

What I got from this specifically is that yes Vi is a dam filled with water, her feelings being the water and the dam being the walls Vi has put up around herself as a way to protect her emotions. Everytime something has tried to break down her walls she only fights back and rebuilds her walls stronger so that the next time it doesn’t work as easily. Caitlyn is just what she needed, that something that showed her care and genuine interest in her. Enough to allow Vi’s dam to break and let her pour the water, her emotions and personal feelings and experiences to Caitlyn. Vi is a Dam, Caitlyn is the something that crashed into it and broke it down in a way that allows her to feel safe and vulnerable.

My apologies if another comment mentioned it already (I tried my best to search before posting), but if you'd like some more information about Vi's time in prison, check out the "Council Archives" on the League of Legends wiki. There are a bunch of incident reports written by guards at the prison detailing some of the things Vi got up to while she was there. Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it.
I know you love Caitlyn but Tilda we need you with this new Vi clip! No pressure to do full videos with your obligations but even a "oh...wow" community post would do the trick
Your editing skills are not bad at all! I imagine you're just starting, right? It's simple but effective; you give the right emotions at the right time, and your locution is SO great it weights out any error you could have visually! It's perfect for a podcast, but watching the video is like the cherry on top. Keep it up, I know you can accomplish great things with your perspectives!

I'll take that as a compliment and let it spurn me on to make more 😊 I never edited or put together a video like this before the Caitlyn video, it's a rather new experience and venture for me, so my edges are definitely rough 😊
I was always sceptical how you can form a bond that fast, until it happened to me 😂.. after one hour I had the feeling we knew each other forever. And from there it was going so fast. I guess in a dramatic event you bond closer too. I can't wait for season 2 and hopefully some more intimate scenes. The video was great :D
Oh, you definitely can, like you, I've tried it myself! I intend to make a short video specifying that up until the bed scene Caitlyn and Vi have been together for 3-4 days, and that's all hours of the day. Quite enough time, I should say! I had the girlfriend talk after a week, and we had only been on four dates. We moved in after a month and got married after 8! So there's nothing unrealistic about falling that hard that fast... 😊

No, if the circumstances align (and they do) and they have chemistry (and they do), it's really rather easy... If someone saves your life multiple times, it's hard to ignore that person despite representing everything you used to hate...
Thanks for the great video about the great show Arcane and about my most favorite characters. I liked you mention of Caitlyn choosing not to shoot Sevika or Jinx, which she easily could. If I think for season 2 and what might come I believe that cait might regret these decision to Jinx, if Jinx has seriously injured or killed Caits mom or Jayce I think that guilt will be tough feeling and motivation for Cait. It will be in her head for what she was NOT shooting for. Very possible that she will make herself and Vi allegations for what Jinx did...making Vi responsible that Jinx injured or killed her mom...togehter with the words from season 2 trailer she might feeling isolated at all and will go hunting down Jinx alone without Vi...and might loose her open mind to other, specially for the people from the Undercity. In my opinion this would be the most tragic consequence of the show when such a good hearted and open minded character like Caitlyn might become a coldblooded bounty hunter, I would hate to see my favorite character of the show change in this way but I fear...maybe Vi can help or detecting the new friedship between Ekko and Heimerdinger might give Caitlyn a new and better point of view to not become a person who is only out to revenge. I mean there could have been so much good coming from a person like Caitlyn, which has seen what is really going on in the Undercity, knowing people from down there to which she can talk and they would listen to her togehter with her great connection to the council of piltover (specially Jayce and Lady Kirramon) to make things better and this all is destroyed by one attack of Jinx and might never come back because an open and goodhearted character might change to a revengedriven and merciless person. I would hate see these wonderful character develop this way.
Thanks for your feedback and your excellent comments! What you fear is my fear too! I see Caitlyn darkening, and there will be lots of reasons for her darkening further in season 2, so I hope that the softening development Vi goes through will counteract that in some way. I fear that Jinx will definitely be an obstacle between them, but I also think that if Caitlyn had indeed killed Jinx at the tea party, Vi would never have forgiven her... So not shooting was the better option, let's hope she sticks to that, adn doesn't become triggerhappy like Jinx... The show is a tragedy, but I would be heartbroken too if Caitlyn, as you say, becomes a revengedriven merciless person, much like Vi was to begin with. It just doesn't fit Caitlyn... I believe there will be interactions between Caitlyn and Ekko in season 2 as well, since she will probably become the new sheriff and thus they would naturally cross paths. Maybe they can come up with a plan again? I'm in the process of making a new video where I paint them as the hope of Arcane (which I think they are). The show being a tragedy and all definitely has the potential of disappointing hopes... (sigh) Can't wait to see, though!
@@tildaowen I agree that the relationship of Violyn can be a hope for zaun and Piltover also as the partnership of Ekko and Heimerdinger who finally might come into action after being a lazy leader of Piltover in the last years. But I do not think that Caitlyn will become Sheriff very soon, because she did nothing to earn it. She could not stop Jinx attack on the council and her last meeting with the political powers of Piltover did not end in harmony...maybe her and Vi schould have prepared better for the meeting like Mrs. Kiramon recommended instead of having "enjoyed" their time together in Caitlyns bedroom ( a reference to the commentar of Kelly Overton the author of the show for the part of Violyn). If you look on the lack of seniority of Caitlyn as an enforcer I would be surprised to get an promotion to Sheriff for her. This might happen after her tries to hunt down Jinx, when she might have earned some renomee. But here comes the problem: She might have to do this without Vi and also without the help from the authorities in Piltover. The trailer says that Vi seems to refuse to help hunting down her sister - Caitlyn saying that if she goes alone for Jinx one of them will not survive... the open question is if that is going to convince Vi to help her against Jinx? I guess this will be one of the main parts of season 2 which connection is stronger Vi/Jinx or Violyn. Next point is that with Jinx attack on the council the relationship between Piltover and the Undercity is finally no longer existing and Piltover and Zaun are now in war, how this is used by Noxus or other persons who are going to fill the gap of Silco in Zauns underworld we have to wait, but it will affect both, Violyn and Jinx.
@@thomasewald7905 I see your points about Caitlyn as sheriff, and maybe it will be a while before we get there. But even though she doesn't have seniority, who can the council trust apart from her? And if Jayce is one of the few surviving members, I don't think he will hesitate to appoint her... It depends on a lot of things... I totally agree about Noxus interference, should be interesting to see the scale of the conflict, how far it spreads, etc.
@@tildaowen And on Noxus here we are...I would not wonder if they would try to gain influence by assisting Piltover in the upcoming conflict with Zaun. They might send troops or so called military advisors to close the ranks of the enforcers. Noxus might try to set one of their man on the vacant position of sheriff. And on Caitlyn...Does anyone except of Jayce trust Caitlyn? depends on the survivors of the attack and the successors of the victims. Caitlyns last appearance at the council did not went well.
@@thomasewald7905 No, it didn't, at least in her eyes... She did, however, unveil Marcus and the corruption, and the question is if they will appreciate her craftiness and truth-seeking detective work, or resent her for revealing their own failures? In any case, I think her mother's little nod indicates that she is starting to see what Caitlyn is about, the honest work she does and how she tried her best. The real question is, as you say, what plan did they have going into the chamber? (yes, what did they spend that afternoon doing? 🤔😉) Because it seems like they're not on the same page sometimes during the meeting... Was it brokering peace with Silco or take him out?
Yes, good point, and we also see the mother briefly when Vi wakes up after Caitlyn has given her the potion. We're definitely supposed to compare the two, Vi is supposed to associate Caitlyn with pleasant memories 😊

In lore after she becomes an enforcer Zaunites begin calling her a lapdog and a traitor without context it does look that way but you have to remember caitlyn swooped in and rescued her like prince charming from prison showed her shes trustworthy and has saved her life 3 times its a loyalty thing that she becomes an enforcer yes but i also beleive she wants to change the status quo from the inside Comment what you guys think jus my observation
Vi joining the enforcers seems impossible to me because of Marcus and what happened to her parents. And yet her hatred for Silco, Sevika and the unjust exploitation of people through shimmer made her team up with Jayce... So if she is asked by Caitlyn to join (maybe in a consulting position?), I see it happening, because Vi fights injustice and she trusts Caitlyn and knows that she is a good person. But I can see why some Zaunites would see that as a betrayal.

@tildaowen can you do this analysis with Blake and Yang from RWBY?
@@aris6756 I agree, the characters are so well written! I can't wait for season 2 either...
@@tildaowen Or more kindhearted and affectionate (if that's even possible)
@@jadegecko 😂 Perhaps a very little...
There was a tea party?
@@buseerturk3990 Well, the ...whatever it was where Jinx had them all as a captive audience
Well said, Vi truly expects to be judged, but Caitlyn just supports her, wonderful ❤️
Beautiful!
That is so sweet but the first thing I thought of was 69
Does that say something about the scene? Or you? 😉
That in turn would give them a pass to not get hurt since they do what they do and Vi would have just trusted their art and skill to not be hurt by it, given the reputation the artist would have gained amongst the prison ranks.
i just love how subtle and obvious vi's expressions are, they carry so much meaning nd we can see she going soft
Yes, I love that we can see so much emotion in their faces both Vi and Caitlyn. And all the rest also, Fortiche is amazing!

"why does vi fall for Caitlyn?" I mean I did too...

Forgot to meantion:
Yes, I know the video is about Vi, but for some reason I felt like talking to someone about Caitlyn's qualities and why she may be so shooking for Vi's walls.

Any ideas as to what I can look into next?
It seems like people just ask would "it be man or woman."
And it's bizarre.
Jeez, I miss Vander((((
Anyway, I'm exited to see Your next videos (analysis and lists)! best wishes!
@@Ikuto1313 well, when you put it like that, maybe I should give it a go 😂
@@tildaowen It's sadly rare that I see a lesbian relationship in media that isn't two women with a shared bond of trauma.
I love Vi, she is both the heart and the (physical) strength of the show.

I couldn’t agree more!
When I was researching my first video, I looked into it, and here's what I came up with (premise: the actions and events occuring in both Piltover and the undercity happen chronologically as we are shown them):
DAY 1, episode 4 +5: Caitlyn arrives at Stillwater late at night, she arranges to free Vi from prison (do they sleep at night? we don't know, depends at what ungodly hour, Caitlyn visits the prison...)
DAY 2, episode 5: the next time we see them, it is broad daylight.
I enjoy it immensely, part of the reason why I do these videos is to have these discussions after, and your comments are next level 😊👍
I definitely wonder about the unspoken (or unshown) moments: such as the general time span (when there's no sunlight in the undercity, time loses meaning), Vi's time in prison, the time between their heart to heart in bed and the council meeting, the time gap from ep 3 to 4...
However...
"it's very funny and also quite sad how much time I've spent on them 😂"

@1:06 in the game, when you select Vi she literally says, "punch first, ask questions while punching," haha.
Yeah, I had heard that, it’s definitely her thing 😂 Maybe not anymore though…
This is among one of the best pairings in shows PERIOD. Also, this has been one of my favorite videos ever! I always enjoy these types of videos, the deep dives, this is what makes a great topic look great.
Thank you so much! I'm honoured. And yes, totally agree, best pairing ever, best show ever! ❤️💯
Ekko giving vi and Caitlyn privacy i wouldn't have noticed that if it wasn't for your video 9:30 ❤😂
I’m glad I can help you notice all the beautiful aspects of their story 😊

Would be so interesting to see!
After what happened to Vi, I just want to give her a huge hug and yell at her and Caitlyn, "Just kiss already!" Great video too!
Thanks! Yes, Vi needs some loving and she needs to let herself be loved too! ❤️
Thanks for that 😊👍
I love your voice!! And this was probably the best analysis I've seen of their relationship.
Thank you so much! 😊
I already loved their relationship but your analysis made me only love it so much more. You have such an enriching voice, it gave me great comfort! Thank you, I can't wait to see more!
Thank you very much! I really love talking about them, they're so inspiring (and no, I'm not done yet 😊)
@@tildaowen Can't wait!
Thanks and you're very welcome 😊 That's how I feel about them too. Such an amazing story in such a well written show!
this aged sooo well
Thank you!
That and her enormous heart, as you say 😊
In the future I fear she may become darker (I made a Caitlyn video, not quite like this one, but it takes a deep look into her character where I talk about this) and she needs to set some boundaries with Vi, so Vi doesn't make all decisions on their behalf.
But if the video talks Arcane in general and doesn't touch on her, then it's not an Arcane video I would enjoy much lol
I hope season 2 will have Caitlyn in every episode and I want to see so much of her. I hope for more flashbacks of her too. More with Grayson, her friendship with Jayce and of course her growing up with her parents. I can't wait.
@@psgamer-0199 Neither can I!
@@tildaowen Ah true. Also thank you for pointing me towards Stop Me Oh, really interesting video!
@@paperstar7474 Thank you right back for your interesting interpretation! Similar to Stop Me Ohs, but you expand on it :-) She has made quite a few good videos about Arcane and Caitlyn and Vi, check those out too :-)

13:00 you said in the other video (Cait towards vi) that cait has trouble expressing herself verbally so this makes that scene all the more impactful
Thank you for all your time stamped comments, I'm glad my video is engaging you 😊
I agree with what you say, except that Vi has forgotten the new Jinx name, because this is ringing in her ears since Sevika mentions it! She knows exactly what that name entails, not something she would easily forget! Which is also why it is telling that for a few minutes, Powder/Jinx is out of her mind because of the close proximity of Caitlyn... 😍
wow. once again an entrapping analysis i am astounded by your ability to analyze and understand.
Thanks a lot, well, I cheated, analysis was part of my education, so I should be good at it (a bit of a waste otherwise, huh?) 😉
Great video!!! So... now we know what happened to this two, it was amazing how they developed their relationship.
Yeah, it’s an amazing story all the way through! I’m not done with them yet though 😁
This is absolutely fantastic! More, please! I just finished Season 2! I think I'm going to rewatch the whole thing all over again. Keep up the great videos!
Thank you! Yeah, S2 is definitely worth a rewatch! Am working on more vids too 😊
The end scene where vi is carrying caitlyn after jinx fires here shark gun is another sign of the love they share.
Yes, they carry each other literally and figuratively 😊
1:29
Yeah shes a giver alright
It’s only at the very end episode 8 where she asks for something for herself 😁 And yet, she’s still giving 😍
Sorry for being late to reply! A very good done analysis, and beautiful! It's perfect,
catches every detail of our lovely couple. Your explanation about the cupcake meanings it's
so on point: i never thought about it but it makes complete sense.
One thing i always thinks is how Vi and Cait felt alone in different ways: for Vi was the
loneliness that brings responsibility. She felt alone being the older sister to raise and
protect Powder, she felt alone when she was the leader of the gang. Then came the total
loneliness of imprisonment: severed from the world, lost everything in a single night, i
can't even begin to think at how horrible and devastating this was for her.
Sorry for the long comment, but your video is food for thoughts!
Bear with me, i don't like going around "shilling" myself, but there's a couple of things in
your analysis that i wrote and would like to share.
I wrote a fanfiction about Vi's prison years, so i can say a couple of things i imagined
happened in Stilwater that you mentioned in your analysis. just my headcanon!
She made some aquantainces in prison, at least one friendly, as the word friendly can be
applied to someone known in prison: there is no trust basically, everyone can count only on
themselves. In my case are two tattoists/mercenaries women, a shuriman and a freljordian that
teaches Vi tattoing and then helps her for arms and back tattos, that Vi designed herself. She even end up working with them, developing a more deep friendship. And yes, good thing you noticed something that many overlook: it's a mixed prison, where women that cannot defend themselves are victims of men. Vi of course will never be one of them: she will end up being their bane actually!
But she gets abused a lot by guards: the worst part is that if she defend against guards she
gets trhown in solitary, and it's a nightmare in Stilwater. So she ends up not even trying to
react against guards beatings.
In my fic she is fourteen when Marcus buries her in prison: her first years she gets beaten a
lot by both guards and some inmates. Things changes when she is sixteen and she grow up
phisically becoming stronger, more skilled in fighting, someone to not mess with.
Caitlyn loneliness comes from the constant interference of her parents and Piltover's high
society behaviours. To better explaining myself i'll quote what she says to Vi in a
conversation from a fic i wrote (sorry, but it's really better than anything i can comment):
- "Everything i got were the fake friendships of the rich and powerful, the insincere
flattering of people who aimed to enter my parents grace using me as mere mean, as if i was
just a fucking object, non a person!" she shouts, her voice broken, angry as Vi never seen
her! Cait is unburdening a lot of repressed grief and she needs to let it all out, so she
wait patiently, even if all she wants is to reassure her lover instantly "And in the Force!
My colleagues just keep laughing behind my back, no one takes me seriously: they just
tolerate me because i am a fucking Kiramman! I despise my family's name with all my heart, it
has never done nothing good for me!" "Jayce was a friend, of course, but even with him i was
never sure if he just wanted to please my parents who financed his research: that's the level
of paranoia i constantly lived, live in! Grayson was the only one who understood and accepted
me as i am, who treated me as a person, respecting my choices and encouraging me: when i lost
her i was alone again." "You're not alone anymore, my love! I'm here with you, for you: forever!" Vi cups her cheeks, staring deep in Cait's eyes, reaching to her soul. Cait wipes
her tears and manage to put a smile on "I know, Vi: you are the truest person i've ever met." -
I hope i wasn't annoying, as i said i don't like to go around saying "i wrote this, i wrote that!" It was just a way to express better my thoughts :) Anyway, again, great analysis!
RUclips formatting messed up my comment, sorry about that!
You have one of the most soothing voices I have ever heard and I could fall asleep to it like it's a lullaby.
Ha ha, that was definitely not my intention with the video, but I'm glad it's useful for multiple purposes! 😂
This video just so sweet which makes me ship them more also caitlyn is really pretty and kind which is why vi fell for her. 'Why does Vi fall for caitlyn?'
Vi:-because she is a hot cupcake

Thanks a lot! Yes, I'm infatuated with Violyn, Caitlyn, the show, all of it. Am working on two more videos as we speak so no, not stopping yet 😊
@@tildaowen if arcane follows vi's backstory in league then she really doesn't have a choice 😓
This video essay is brilliant. Genuinely brilliant.
Thank you so much! 😊
Thanks for your suggestions, at the moment I'm working on a video about the setting of the show, but I can't avoid (or help) touching on some of the characters you mention 😊
wow I think this is the best analysis that I ever seen of this relationship
Thank you so much, I tried the best of my abilities 😊
Thanks!
Thank you! Yeah, I love Caitlyn too (as you’ve probably noticed, lol), she’s a really interesting character as well as being extremely likeable
Great video, your analysis of Violyn is spot on! Already liked and subscribed.
Thank you, that means a lot! They really get under my skin, I had to share my take on them 😊
Great insight into the origin of the Cupcake nickname. I took the "sweet" explanation to be the whole of it, but there's more to it than that - as always with Arcane! I should have known there would be. Everything, every word and every frame and every scene, has more thought behind it than many shows manage in entire seasons.
Thank you! Yes, there are SO many layers to this show, it's amazing, the writers and the animators really did a spectacular job! 😊
this was amazing to watch! i'd love to watch more videos from you like this analysis. more anaylsis no matter what series! more arcane or anything else if they're all like this! you got my subscription
Thank you! That is great to hear, I'm definitely thinking about which ways to go when I run out of Arcane themes (which won't be too soon, I'm still hooked 😂), and I'm glad you want my take on things 👍😊
Exactly 😊Their roles will probably be reversed next season, at least some of the time…

Yes, yes, coming up (slowly…) 😊
@tildaowen YAY!!! Looking forward to it!! ✨
Thanks for the tip, you're the first one to mention it. Are the archives about the game or the show? Because I'd rather stick to the show only 😊
@@tildaowen From what I can tell, it appears to be show only. They have 4 of them, for Jayce, Vi, Caitlyn, and Jinx.

Enjoying your videos. Great job diving into the details.
Thanks! There are so many great details in this show, I can't help myself 😊
Thank you, very useful feedback! I try to edit as best as I can with the programme I've got, and I'm getting better, and though it is taking me a long time to make the videos, I like doing them! And I'm glad it's going in the right direction (and that I have other strengths 😊)
Only 3 videos? And under 200 subs?? Guess I just found a diamond in the raw
I'll take that as a compliment and let it spurn me on to make more 😊 I never edited or put together a video like this before the Caitlyn video, it's a rather new experience and venture for me, so my edges are definitely rough 😊

Thank you so much, and thanks for watching 😊
@@tildaowen aw thats sweet! ☺️ That would be an interesting video with the time line. I like your videos xD .. I just finished the series and was wondering how I could missed it. And now I'm watching all the RUclips Videos lol

@@LittleSkyful I was just like you, totally wrapped up in them that I missed quite a few things 😂😂
It doesn’t take long to fall for someone, even if you’re remaining on guard for a while.
No, if the circumstances align (and they do) and they have chemistry (and they do), it's really rather easy... If someone saves your life multiple times, it's hard to ignore that person despite representing everything you used to hate...
Cait proved she’s a badass and Vi is someone who likes badasses
Oh, absolutely! Caitlyn can hold her own and send Sevika packing with just three perfect shots, that's very badass!
This is a very well done observation, i enjoy watching this a lo, thanks for this
Thank you, you're very welcome! 😊
I’m so wow with your analysis
Thank you so much! 😊
Also, Caitlyn looks a lot like Vi's mom (you see her and the dad I think in Ep. 1).
Yes, good point, and we also see the mother briefly when Vi wakes up after Caitlyn has given her the potion. We're definitely supposed to compare the two, Vi is supposed to associate Caitlyn with pleasant memories 😊

In lore after she becomes an enforcer Zaunites begin calling her a lapdog and a traitor without context it does look that way but you have to remember caitlyn swooped in and rescued her like prince charming from prison showed her shes trustworthy and has saved her life 3 times its a loyalty thing that she becomes an enforcer yes but i also beleive she wants to change the status quo from the inside
Comment what you guys think jus my observation
Vi joining the enforcers seems impossible to me because of Marcus and what happened to her parents. And yet her hatred for Silco, Sevika and the unjust exploitation of people through shimmer made her team up with Jayce... So if she is asked by Caitlyn to join (maybe in a consulting position?), I see it happening, because Vi fights injustice and she trusts Caitlyn and knows that she is a good person. But I can see why some Zaunites would see that as a betrayal.
@@tildaowen her name in game is litterally the piltover enforcer lol she eventually does but shes still vi when caitlyns compassion doesnt work she calls vi
