    I saw this theory the other day that proposed that maybe during the bed scene, instead of anything sexual (but perhaps romantic) Caitlyn suggests that they should go on a “date”. Maybe not as forward as that but more like “i can show you around Piltover sometime”. This would then make the rain scene/breakup scene make more sense as surely the writers would show an intimate scene but a scene with supposedly no romantic interest? Not likely. Also they could 100% flashback to this from Vi’s POV after a fight with Angry/Vengeful/Commandeer Caitlyn maybe even shedding tears.

    • @tildaowen
      @tildaowen 13 дней назад

      There are many theories, them having sex is the least likely in my opinion. Caitlyn asking her on a date, is more likely, I agree, but still low on my list. Her saying “what about us”, would be more logical yes, but I think the audience is supposed to be surprised, not hoodwinked by lack of information. So Caitlyn saying this shows a very strong attachment despite being heretofore unspoken… I think that’s really romantic 😍

    Love the analysis. Btw, do you have any thoughts on Caitlyn's line "she risked everything to show me what life was really like down there". What risk could she have ment? Losing Jinx, knowing how upset (to call it midly) she got whenever she saw them together? I mean.. Vi didn't really risk anything trying to go after Silco or Sevika and she would've done it regardless if Caitlyn follwed her or not. But it would be a strange thing if Cait meant antagonising Vi's sister, why would she mean that in front of the council?

    • @tildaowen
      @tildaowen 16 дней назад

      Thanks 😊 I think you’re right, Vi would have gone after them regardless, but she risked her life, her reputation, her status in the undercity, by accompanying an enforcer, her sworn enemy. That is a big risk. But as I said in another video, Vi’s allegiance is primarily to family, not Zaun, so she goes where she can help family most

      @@tildaowen haha, thank you, I haven't thought of the obvious. You're right, even Ekko said to Vi he can't trust her since she's giving a Piltie a tour of the lanes. I agree that during the council meeting she was sad because she must've already decided to leave Caitlyn behind. Her looking down in the saddest expression directly after Cait's line that she risked everything might add the reasons that she's starting to realise she has risked everything and most likely lost everything: she can't be with Cait, the undercity no longer feels like home and last she knows of Powder and Ekko is the bridge explosion. Btw, I saw a parallel of the shots of Vi's back in prison at the end of ep 4 and Caitlyn in the centre of the screen from the prison scene paralleled to Vi's back in the rain "break up" scene, where she's also looking over her left shoulder in the exact same angle and Caitlyn in the centre shot. Adds even more depth and symbolism to Vi walking away on her own

I haven’t really made up my mind… Would it be weird for Jayce to be interested in her that way after being akin to a big brother first? Yes, but not unheard of (just ask Jane Austen’s character Emma…). I disagree with labeling Caitlyn as a lesbian, making that an argument against a romantic attraction on Jayce’s part. I’m not sure Caitlyn knows this about herself in the beginning of act two, much less Jayce… I also think she’s more of a bisexual if anything. But I like her label free, that fits her in other areas too, she’s hard to pin down as just one type of woman, enforcer, topsider, councillors daughter, friend, etc…

    I believe the term "love triangle" is used incorrectly like 99% of time. In order to be a love triangle, all 3 people would have to have some kind of relationship or attraction with each other. In this specific case, Jinx and Caitlyn would have to have some kind of "love" (either familiar or romantic) relationship too in order it to be a love triangle. In triangle, all lines are connected. Another example is the Twilight saga "love triangle (I consider Twilight to be an ultimate trash, but it is a nice example in this case) - If it was a love triangle, Edward and Jacob would have to have a relationship as well, and they don't. These cases that are usually described as "a triangle" are more correctly love pyramids I would say - one person is always on the top (in case of Arcane it's Vi) and the other two are the "rivals" (Jinx and Cait).

    • @tildaowen
      @tildaowen 20 дней назад

      Well, I didn’t coin the phrase, but I guess pyramid would be more logical. But terms to describe something irl or in fiction don’t necessarily make sense… And since 99% understand love triangle as I use it, then I think I’ll stick to that term. Even if my version is unconventional. I would also say that the odds of a love triangle happening irl as you describe it, are pretty slim, it’s rather unusual for all three parties to be interested in each other romantically… But thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching

    @igabak2754 Месяц назад

    I've got a theory about what they were doing between that scene and the council. Since Vi was sharing a childhood memory and Caitlyn didn't, I reckon Vi drew her out. Caitlyn then told her the story from her flashback about Grayson, which made Vi upset and she related the traumatic experience from ep 3 when Grayson was murdered a few meters from her. This reinforces everything that happened later: Why Vi was sad during the council meeting, why Caitlyn said the collective "they" failed her in so many ways why Vi during the "breakup" emphesised their class diferences cos it hurt her to realise just how different their childhoods were (she must've been also permitted to take a shower, and we all know what kind of an impression that gigantic luxurious bathroom must've left on Vi). And it reinforces why Caitlyn asked 'what about us', since Vi expressed interest in getting to know her story.

    What drives me to believe Vi fell this quick is because of her values and her love language. Vi’s love language is mainly sacrifice and protection, so when she sees Caitlyn trying to protect her and sacrificing her life for Vi (when she comes to block Jinx’s bullets from her in the bridge scene) Vi becomes very "attracted" to that. Making her therefore trusting Caitlyn more than she would’ve otherwise. Also Vi’s love language mainly occurs with members of her family. She was brought up knowing that family make sacrifices for each other, so when someone non family does just that she gravitâtes more towards loving Caitlyn for those reasons. So in return, Vi becomes protective of Caitlyn, as shown in the Tea party scene where she got mad at Jinx for involving her in their troubles. That earned trust from Vi is why I think 5 days would be more than enough for Vi to fall in love and same for Caitlyn, hope I made sense 😂

Vi just wanted Piltover’s help eliminating Silco, and Caitlyn had the naive belief that once they identify the key criminal (Silco), he’d be brought to justice, the gemstone would be found, and the war situation can deescalate. They thought once they prove the case against Silco, all would surely be well and they didn’t do a single “what if” exercise. Shoulda listened to Mommy Kiramman. There is lesbian invisibility at play here, pure and simple. People perceive this as too fast because all the early indications slip through their radar. When a hetero pairing so much as look at each other for a second too long, they clock it. In fact, even the mere presence of an attractive man and an attractive woman in the same scene primes the audience to anticipate sexual/romantic tension. We know it before they even interact, if the show makes a point of introducing a character as hot when they first meet the other. Because that is actually how humans often behave. Sometimes, attraction registers instantly, and when you do have smack-you-in-the-face attraction it frames everything else from there. It doesn’t mean people instantly fall in love, but they’re certainly predisposed to it. Whereas here, because most people don’t take homosexuality as the default assumption, they only first notice it when it hits them over the head, at which point it feels sudden and “out if nowhere”. It’s the same reason two women could show up to a hotel holding hands and ask for a room with one bed and the receptionist will assume they’re sisters. If the receptionist sees them making out at some point they’ll feel blindsided. People don’t see what is there; they see what they identify. To my eye, sexual tension began the second we were introduced to Vi in prison through Cait’s eyes. We got a slow scan of tattooed back muscles glistening with sweat and the face reveal with the hair over eyes. It was a “hot character reveal”. Some may say it was a “tough character reveal” but are these opposites? These pieces of information often go hand in hand unless the tough character is pointedly ugly. Or, as in this case, unconventional. If Vi were a man, muscles = hot. Even if Cait were a man too, that reveal might scream “gay!” If Cait were a man, and Vi was a buxom hourglass? Unambiguous. But with Vi being unconventionally hot, and the beholder being a femme woman too, the scene doesn’t read as a “love interest” reveal to people who aren’t used to imagining someone like Cait drooling over someone like Vi. Cait’s literal first thought about Vi was “holy smokes”. She spends the entire rest of the time struggling to think clearly and focus on the mission. If you clock that, you’re also clocking everything else from there and by the time she’s almost kissing her, it’s no surprise at all. No one says they’re ready to get married after the 5 days. They might discover they don’t even like each other if they hang out normally for 2 weeks after this. But what they do have right now is raging attraction, growing respect, and a caring trauma bond. Potent ingredients for falling in love and craving closeness.

      I agree completely with the lesbian invisibility! There are so many scenes which would undoubtedly be unambiguously romantic/sexual, if they had been opposite sex (or even two men as you say). But I didn’t read Caitlyn’s reaction to Vi in prison as “holy smokes, she’s hot!”, but more “holy smokes, she’s intimidating, powerful, dangerous, volatile, different, interesting, etc” I think her detective sense is tingling at this point, not her hottie detector. That being said, Caitlyn is definitely attracted in general to that which is dangerous and different, so her interest is peaked, but I don’t think she as a character senses anything else until the brothel. But you’re right, the scene at the prison can definitely read as a romantic setup, which is overlooked by large parts of the audience…

    Right there with you on coping with withdrawal ❤ It’s cool that our 2 protagonists are in the middle of a love triangle of their own. Vi with Cait and Jinx with Silco. The elephant in the room is mental illness. Vi has tons of trauma and, to a much lesser extent, Cait may have some too, but Silco and Jinx both have woefully untreated BPD, *plus* those piles of trauma on top. Powder was younger than Vi when they lost their parents. Vi got to hit some developmental milestones before The Worst happened. And sometimes it’s just luck about the brain you’re born with, but bottom line is Powder is legit crazy and Vi is not. Powder’s meltdown when Vi leaves her behind (before the mission) is a textbook BPD reaction to “abandonment”, not just youthfulness. When she jumps into Silco’s arms later it’s “she left me. she is not my sister anymore”. Black and white. Silco says black and white things too: “everyone always betrays us”. Bro, you just made a speech about loyalty when Sevika was having your back earlier. Vander also mentions “you had my respect”, but people with Powder and Silco’s mental illness often struggle to see love or feel safe. I do think Silco manipulates Jinx’s insecurities but i also think he often believes the dark things he says about Powder being betrayed and abandoned because he projects his own experience / distorted worldview onto her. Back to Cait-Vi-Powder. Vi always chooses Powder. Powder is never able to internalize it. When Vi is leaving her behind because “you’re all i have left”, when Vi is back and holding her (“are you real?”), when Vi says “im here for you. Only you.”, when she says “nothing will ever change that” (re: are we still sisters?)”, when she sees Vi part ways with Cait on the bridge, when Vi chooses her again by saying “we’ll go away together”. Vi doesn’t even reject Jinx! That’s a misconception. When Powder says “I’ve changed”, Vi says “it’s okay; you did what you had to do to survive; so did I”. But Powder really struggles to retain these things when she’s splitting into black and white thinking. It can be thankless at times to try to reassure someone who is disorderedly insecure. 100 devoted acts disappear behind 1 hesitation. A detail I enjoyed is the way the sisters know each other. When Powder does crazy things like talk to people who aren’t there, Cait is thrown off by it but Vi is not. Both Vi and Silco occasionally just kind of move past some of Powder’s most erratic actions. Do we think Powder’s meltdown before the Vander rescue mission is the first time that happened? Nah. Powder has probably always been nuts about Vi and Vi is familiar with her reactions and tiptoes around them. Anyone who’s loved someone with BPD knows how fragile they can be and how strongly they react to the slightest threat. So Powder being nuts is not news to Vi. The one time she’s taken aback is when she sees her now grown and empowered sister gunning people down. Indeed, BPD comes to full bloom in the 20s. Powder is now gone from sensitive and stormy to scary dangerous, especially when coupled with her penchant for explosives and poisonous new parent. Vi is not ill like that. When she went home with Cait it’s because Powder had literally just shot at her. Best let someone cool off when they’re in THAT kind of mood, before trying to make up again. When Vi is asked to murder an innocent bystander to prove her devotion to Powder, she doesn’t even hesitate. Sure, Vi loves Cait by then but that’s not even the issue. She’s not going to murder someone in cold blood because her crazy sister is having one of her meltdowns. She remains focused on trying to calm her sister down. In the end, Jinx says i thought you could still love me… you’ve changed too”. Sigh. Disordered thinking continues. Romanticizing how much Vi always loved her before (even though they probably had plenty of fights as kids) and concluding she doesn’t love her now (despite mountains of evidence to the contrary). Powder just feels bad and that’s how she things when she’s in pain, no matter what anyone says. The irony is that Vi has, in fact, been slowly changing sides. Nothing to do with Powder vs Cait. More about Top vs Under, anti-enforcer vs pro-enforcer. Vi is perfectly able to love her sister while growing into a more nuanced view of who the heroes and villains are in her political landscape. But for someone like Powder, Vi shifting at all is too threatening to contemplate. All this to say, Vi never had to make a choice. She was always all about Powder but Powder was straight up triggered by Cait’s very existence and she exploded all by herself. Vi had zero agency in her own “love triangle.”

      Amazing points you make! I really like your analysis of Jinx's mental state, it makes total sense to me. Mental illness makes it hard for Jinx to see anyone’s perspective but her own. What doesn’t fit, she ignores… And I see your point about Vi not really having any agency with Jinx, but my point is that she has to! She can’t let Jinx make all the choices for her anymore…

      While I respect your point of view I think you're using quite a bit of selective reasoning in how you're describing Jinxes (and Silcos, for that matter) mentality and perspective. Their attitude towards love and loyalty is informed by a lot more than a selfish need for validation and exclusive affection, but on stringent expectations for the nature and identity of people they commit to and would do anything for. They base their identities around those that care for them and in turn, expect them to act in a certain way back to them. For Silco, he expected Vander to remain dedicated to Zaun's liberation no matter his reservations or emotional hangups, what he got was a literal knife in the back - he doesnt "feel safe" around his Brother because said Brother literally and figuratively proved himself to be a different man than Silco thought he was. Granted, his betrayal happens decades before Vanders will to fight is broken on the bridge, but the two events are still connected in Silcos mind so I feel they should be described as such since we dont know what Vanders motivations were. The exact same is true of Jinx, she doesnt feel betrayed simply because Vi doesnt give her enough attention or affection, but because the split in her affection is directly at odds with her being the person Jinx needs her to be in order to have her loyalty. Vi has developed an image of "Powder" so distinct from her authentic reality it may as well be equivalent to the "Jinx" persona shes carefully crafted with Silco in order to live up to his expectations and needs. Jinx (the person, not the idea) processes this symbolic crossroads for both of them by deciding that if Vi wants to her to act like she did when she was a kid, then Vi needs to act like the big sister she remembers, and Jinx is fully convinced - for good reason - that that Vi wouldnt have been caught dead holding onto an enforcer and council members daughter whom she seems to have a suspiciously similar protective/guidance based dynamic with to that she had with Powder. Yes, Jinx's reaction to Caitlyns presence is primarily personal, but she would not have reacted with a feeling of betrayal and the idea that Vi couldnt be trusted if it was anyone else with her that night. Caitlyn is not simply an innocent bystander, but a member of the same military who Vi and Jinx's Mother died trying to save them from the subjugation of, shes in the undercity searching for the progress day bomber and to retrieve the gemstone, shes the daughter of one of the most powerful women in Piltover and a symbol of everything the sisters grew up feeling lesser than. As long as Jinx intends to stay in Zaun, her home, she cant exist in Vis world so long as Caitlyn does. That there seems to be a dilemma between the two in Vi's mind from JInx's perspective, isnt the problem in of itself, but a symptom of the problem - that Jinx feels Vi has changed yet feels that how her sister has changed is wrong and must be corrected. Which, well, she has and she does, so its not very illogical thinking on Jinxs part as far as im concerned. This is best evidenced in the quote you've significantly changed, Jinx doesnt say to Vi "I thought you could still love me", she says "I thought you could love me like you used to" which has a world of difference in it. Jinx knows Vi loves her (and loves her in return mind), she wouldnt have bothered asking her to choose between her and someone she functionally cannot have in her life at the same time if she didnt, she wouldve cut her ties and left without a further action. Its that Jinx thinks, or rather knows, that Vi loves an image, an idea, a ghost of what her sister is supposed to be rather than the full person and is doing so without becoming the equivalent image of herself in her own right. This is why Silcos last words to her are so affecting, they're an expression of totally unconditional love from someone who to that point had conditioned his approval and affection solely on her fulfillment of an inauthentic sense of self. This is something that Vi is unable to do because of how her guilt made her cling to an idea of Powder divorced from the continuing development of her sister to the point in which she views her adult self as a prison like shell in which her true sister is trapped within, an idea Jinxes people pleaser attitude to identity and past experiences with the topic - silco directing her to kill her past self to escape its emotional baggage and forge a stronger future self - enable Vi to believe. So no I'm sorry but Vi absolutly made multiple and dramatic, albeit mostly unconscious, decisions regarding her relationship with Powder, Caitlyn and had her soul and character - as well as others view of it - changed in return. Dedicating herself to "Powder" is not as clear cut as it sounds when said dedication is so undercut by attitude and context in the perspective of the person whose loyalty she is trying to win. Even when its not Vis fault that she feels this way, she does in fact decide her course of action based upon the same.

    Cait is a protagonist of sorts. She’s not *the* protagonist of the season, but she’ll be a kind of protagonist by the 2 season arc. She’s one of the most popular “champions” in the game, so plenty of attention is paid to her backstory. I agree that Vi is more the narrator of this story (along with Jinx of course) but Cait is the primary love interest and absolutely a Main Character. By the end, this will have been a story about how this ensemble cast got to be where they are.

    After much analysis and discussion, this is the first time I understood “what about us?”. It’s *out of character*! Which is why it’s been bothering me so much. But rather than trying to fit it into her character or fill in some events that would make it fit, you call it out as out of character and give a reason for out of character behaviour. The reason was pretty much desperation and being far outside her comfort zone. In this scene she’s physically reaching for Vi and Vi keeps creating distance. With Vi out of reach, this was her last ditch effort to connect before Vi slips away. Being under pressure to blurt something out explains why it was so awkwardly phrased. “What about us?” is just not quite the socially astute question for what they’ve had so far. It’s been intense but never overt. It’s a presumptuous question and thus either extremely confident (which I *really* cannot see) or extremely vulnerable, which would be out of character, but now it’s clicked why.
