The most baffling stealth section I have encountered is from Heroes Of Might and Magic 5. Mission called "The Temptation" has the player "sneaking" through enemy territory, and being caught results in an instant game over. For those of you who dont know, Heroes 5 is a turn based strategy game where everyone and everything moves on a rigid grid. If youre wondering how stealth in that game system works, it doesn't.
The entire experience boils down to random luck, because you just have to hope the enemies won't go the way you want to go. They don't patrol between predetermined points, but instead they move randomly. And if one of the enemies decide to go on the 1 (one) path that can take you away from the enemy territory, then you are pretty much boned.

@@Ben_CleverName Same. I love HoMM3, but hearing HoMM5 having this, I was curious and wondering if they meant the regular Might and Magic series, instead of the Heroes series. Nope. Crazy that 5 is a drastically different game.

Nice video! I think this was one of the funniest yet! I’d also like to thank you for giving me my first glimpse of gameplay from KH: 358/2 Days.
Oh, I’ve played it before, but not really, because it was the HD 1.5 Remix version. The one that just retells the events of the game via HD cutscenes and text box summaries.
Did I only boot it up for the trophies? Yes.
Did I watch the whole thing because I got emotionally invested? Also yes!
Did I shed a tear at one point? I think I did.
Do I remember anything about it? Hell no!

in all honesty, it might be the roughest in the series in terms of gameplay, but at the same time, it is that exact hostility towards the player that makes the story moments between missions hit so hard for those who have played it. It is practically impossible to forget the story if you played the game to completion, but reaching that point is a job in and of itself.
The game really needs a remaster, and no, that cutscene collection doesnt count. Polish out some of the hostility (but keep the mission structure in all its mundanity), update the control scheme, and give the multiplayer mode online functionality.

For a potential follow-up: the Rat Hunting quest from Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader. In an isometric rpg, they give you a mission where you need to sneak into a gang’s sewer hideout to save a companion’s friends for her companion quest. This involves running around and turning on a bunch of gas valves to spray knockout gas into the gang’s main hideout. A few problems. First, there’s no way to know where the valves are ahead of time, so you’ll be wandering around, potentially running into the guards. Second, the guards have no icons on the map to see where they are without seeing them in for yourself (likely getting spotted), and they also have no indicated line of sight, meaning that you can get caught with no way of avoiding it. Third, since stealth isnt in any other part of the game, fine control of your characters outside of combat isn’t a thing, you just click and your party will take the shortest route to get there, so unless you’re micromanaging the characters individually, they can bumble into a guard. Fourth, there are traps that, if triggered, immediately alert the guards and fail the stealth. You can spot and disarm the traps, but both are based on random chance based on your party’s skill levels, so if you don’t have a party with the right skills, it’s feasible to get caught due to a bad die roll (even if the chances are pretty low). Fifth, you can complete the quest even if you fail stealth, but the gang will kill some of your companion’s friends and you will get a worse ending. The worst part is that this is the only point in the game where there is any sort of stealth mechanic, and it’s in act 4 of 5 of an rpg that is easily 60+ hours per run, and unless you don’t care about that companion, you’re going to have to do it every time.

I got two for you. One is the dungeon level (I think level two) of Wolfenstein: The Old Guard. You can technically go through the level without doing the stealth, but good luck with that. The detection range on the enemies you face is kind of insane, and some of the margin windows you have to be able to move through the level are absurdly low.
The other is the sewer level in the Mexico city section of Metal Gear Rising, where you have I believe 3 consecutive rooms where you have to either sneak past or fight 3 of the gorilla style enemies. On your first playthrough when you still don't know the controls, it's an absolute piece of work to get through either way you try, because even if you're using the box, the enemies will still detect you even if you aren't moving, even in the pitch black rooms.

    • @theballingboi5360

Untill Wind Waker was announced and everyone was shocked and hated it's cartoonish artstyle

    • @mamie8734
      @mamie8734 День назад +2

@tarekcat07 I’m aware! That’s why people had gripes with the artstyle, everyone wanted a grittier Zelda, more akin to the demo they saw. They wanted Ocarina of Time, but more “grown up” (they wanted it edgier). Since then, I don’t think anyone has lodged complaints against its artstyle. Wind Waker is lauded as one of the most graphically and visually stunning Zelda games, to this day

I don’t know if this necessarily counts as a “stealth section,” but in Modern Warfare 2019 there’s a section during that game’s embassy attack that requires you to guide a secretary from point-to-point through rooms full of enemies via a cell phone and the building’s security cameras.
Let me tell you that it is one of the most tedious sections in the whole game, as the timing for the correct inputs is fairly strict, and the correct path isn’t really obvious. Not only that, you are not directly controlling her movements, which means that she occasionally will take a super unoptimized route that leads to what looks like a close call into a free trip to the last checkpoint. I distinctly remember a play through where she *hid on the wrong side of the cover I sent her to,* which of course lead to her getting caught. I nearly murdered a controller that day…

358/2 days is my favorite Kingdom Hearts game. The trailing Pete mission isn't even hard, considering the way it's designed, it gives you a relatively large cone of vision so diagonal movements make you have a lot of room for variations in your vision. Staying directly behind him has less variables to work with in your cone, so you're more likely to lose sight of him if you stay directly behind him.

  • @darraghtate440
    @darraghtate440 7 дней назад +9

I will defend the MJ sections (and that 1 Miles section) of the Spider-Man games. They're the only sections that actually have proper level design, and make you alow down and pay attention to the world. The Miles section - where you have to hide from Rhino - is super tense, and really illustrates how scary the villains can be if you're not a super powered jokester. Osborns apartment is a masterstroke of world building; it contains references to what will happen to Harry in 2 and (presumably) Norman in 3, with the proto Goblin mask and the pumpkin bomb blueprints. Plus its the beginning of Miles getting powers.
I really like the slow sections.

The worst stealth mechanics I have ever seen are in Lost Judgment. For some reason RGG decided to throw in stealth sections after nearly a dozen brawler games. You have to hide behind cover, throw a coin to distract them, sneak up behind the enemy, and take them down. This is the requirement for every stealth takedown. If you somehow get behind an enemy without throwing a coin to distract them, you cannot do a takedown. There are also several stealth sections you have to get through without taking down any enemies.
I don't know what was worse, the stealth sections or the weird parkour/climbing sections. At least the combat is 10/10.

The one stealth level that I always hated was the stealth level in Turok Evolution (I think it's Chapter 4). The story mode was very difficult in general, but that level drove me to the point of using cheats to complete it. It's one of those games with a cheat code function that unlocked various things like "Invincibility, Big Heads, Infinite Ammo, etc." the relevant one being "Invisibility."
I still remember the cheat code that unlocked all the cheats "FMNFB" as well as the cheat that took you to the Zoo, "ZOO."

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 was obnoxious with it considering you fight far better enemies but this time if you get caught you just lose. It's a really jarring disconnect. It's why I think stealth should be optional 90% of the time, if you're good enough to compensate for being caught then you should be able to take the "harder" path.

oh god, you just reunlocked my traumatic memory of day 72. As one of the 3 people who actually played the game, i remember the highs and the story quite vividly, but forgot most of the tedium of the more forgettable missions. Numbered days definitely doesnt help matters, so when you brought up 358/2, i couldnt place what you were referring to. And then you explain and show pete and the vision cones. "it is not so bad once you learn pete's walking patterns" you say? More like "it is so bad you need to memorize pete's walking patterns to stand a chance!" Oh well, ive passed the test before, and the game is practically impossible to play now a days without original hardware, so i shouldnt ever have to worry about it again. Right? (this coming from someone who always has that nagging feeling i should replay the game sometime to remember what got me into KH in the first place... how long until i forget the issue again? XD)
(Man it sucks that 358/2 has never quite gotten the remake treatment. No, the cutscene collection does not count. Yes, most of the missions were tedious and generally unfun, but ironically, it was that "suffering through the job" that made the story so amazing in the moments between. Heck, if nothing else, roxas guiding xion through beast's castle as a mentor with a self-inflicted handicap needs to be experienced through gameplay, not a passing "this is what happened between cutscenes" summary.)

Nine Sols, a metroidvania platformer akin to Sekuro and Hollow Knight. As such, it's a fast paced game based on your reaction time, and every fight can usually be solved without taking a single hit if you're skilled enough.
So how about a stealth section where your movement speed is slowed, your health is severely lowered, and every enemy alerts an invincible miniboss to your location, where they'll teleport to you instantly?
The ONLY pass it gets is that you can open shortcuts as you go.

I haven't really played most Zelda games, but at least the in the Yiga hideout it's possible to ignore the forced stealth and just kill them all. I died a few times since I went there pretty early, but damn if it wasn't way more satisfying than trying to sneak past them.
I hated the stealth parts in Echoes of Wisdom. They're not very long or that bad overall, just really annoying for no reason since there's no way around it.

@@hauntedwafflecake I concede that. I was just bad at dealing with the yiga blademasters in combat, so I stuck to the stealth. The Yiga section is well designed in that respect much better than other stealth sections

I had a similar experience with the Final Fantasy XV DLC. Episode Prompto is a first person shooter... that was awkwardly cobbled together from third person swordplay mechanics. I hated that one so much. Except unlike your examples, Square Enix does know how to make FPS games. They just... didn't.

Really? No Katana ZERO? I think it has a horrible stealth section for a game that contains efficient and quick play.

I went thinking "C'mon, the Gerudo Fortress is pretty fine", then I saw it was actually talking about Forsaken Fortress and thinking "Ok this one is really awful"
Not even mad, this was a good one

With Goldeneye inflicted some of the most hated innovations of all-time (escort missions with a braid-dead character, sniper rifles for future generations of campers, and shitty stealth), the PC FPSs that came in its wake could be counted on to have an awful stealth mission (and usually an escort one, too) with virtually none of the features that make stealth missions even remotely tolerable... might as well make a stealth mission for the original DOOM.
Thankfully, I blocked most of them from my memory, but the number of insta-fail steal missions with awful stealth was a rough time to be alive.

The fact that the MJ missions returned in Spiderman 2 shows that Insomniac didn’t give any shits about fan feedback, and after how half-assed that game turned out I’m just not looking forward to the third game or Wolverine, they lost all my confidence.
