Amen to that 👆🏼 but honestly even if she were to cut off her kids from her fortune, they’re probably already in a great financial position because they got a free education and were probably able to get a good paying job and start their adult lives with no debt. John is underrated here. He made a very wise comment about semantics of incendiary words and how often there are a bunch of assumptions flying around between people who are in reality very much on the same side/page. However, very few if any people in this comments section seem to be picking up on it, missed opportunity.

Why can't they get some more information from the caller before they directly jump to the conclusion? I don't think this is the correct way to respond to the caller.

The caller provided zero actual details of the supposed beliefs, and Dave missed the chance to inquire about it. There's something severely off when politics get between family. It's fine to have deep beliefs/an ideology, but to even have the caller state what the "line in the sand" was would have been really helpful to know. Then they can frame the advice based on how legit the issue was.

The caller made clear how deep the issue was to her. It's not Dave's part to downplay the issue or nitpick it for something that means anything other than what it means to her. She made clear she doesn't agree with their views and lifestyle and doesn't want her money going to them.

@@aisherwasher6959 right and there is guilt for those who get college paid for but see their peers struggle with student load debt. That can make those like this woman’s children feel others should get handouts from the govt vis student loan forgiveness. I was blessed to have most of my college paid for and felt some guilt. But my parents broke down the cost and told me the max they would help and that encouraged me to be an ra to cover the rest. My parents also taught me stewardship of money from a young age. So when I continued my adult life i paid for things cash or didn’t buy it and I didn’t take out loans to go into debt.
Dave just used this call to do some political bashing. The minute this sad old woman started using broad name calling labels it was over. I'm certain her children are already aware what a mean spirited woman she is and they don't want her money.

Maybe that is an indictment of the person they are inside but sometimes they get swept into such a mindset from the osmosis of being around other people.

@@colleengarcia7752 You have to read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. It is a great book about entrepreneurs and thier clash against a society that want to exploit thier productivity.
It's essentially "The Capitalist Manifesto" by Ayn Rand. If interested in politics, philosophy, or economics it's worth reading.

This was such a weird call. This lady barely gave an explanation of what her kids were doing and Dave's take was quite reductionist. I think John had a better and more nuanced answer that makes sense.

I agree with Dave, she is not required to do anything with her money that she doesn't want to. I just morally question her reasoning. I wish they would've let the caller go into more detail.
It’s clear her daughters won’t suffer because they didn’t get an inheritance. And again, it’s up to her to decide how she wants to direct that wealth to make the most impact. Like she said, she’s already paid for college which (depending on your beliefs about education) may or may not count as a “generational investment” that most people don’t have access to. If she feels her children aren’t exhibiting the values she raised them to have, then this isn’t a “political issue”, it’s a moral issue and she’s well within right to decide to contribute her wealth to others more inline with her moral viewpoint.

I’d say no thanks to the money if it comes with contingencies on how I am to think and feel as an independent adult in a free country ...Inheriting a fortune is not synonymous with living a fulfilling life. How one can care so much about a previous generations wealth is beyond me. As far as I can tell, both of her kids are self sufficient adults working to support themselves. It isn’t their fault that mom paid their way to success. Sounds like the kids broke away from the GOP and momma isn’t to happy about it.

I wish she would have gave more context as to why she thought they were socialists. Kinda seems to me like she is simply throwing around a political buzzword. Not to mention it sounds like both kids are doing pretty well. One is a 1% er and the other is making 50K which is really not too bad at all. Maybe the kids aren't as worried about the money as mom is?

Fair enough, but also to be fair, if you've been paying any attention at all to the current state of things, "college" is all you need to hear, in all honesty lol. Not all, but most have become Communist and Socialist indoctrination centers for today's youth. What a sad episode. This why greed and money divides families. We all go through different experiences in life. Therefore, her kids must have experienced certain things that changed their perspectives. What happened to simply loving your kids unconditionally for who they are? Withholding money from kids simply looks like love isn't even a part of the relationship. Sad. Hope these kids say, we don't want or need your money anyway.
I've learned a lot from Dave financially. I appreciate his contributions and this platform. But to keep calling anyone names that don't agree with your political views, etc does not come off as walking with God to me. It may be very entertaining, but it is so disrespectful.

I mean does anyone listen to Dave anymore as actual advice? I feel like everyone always just comes here to talk about how out of touch he is or how we never really got the full story of the caller.
Its really concerning that they jumped to a conclusion without actually getting the information. And its concerning that a mother would want to so severely punish her own children simply because they may share differing political beliefs. Some people identify as "socialists" simply because they like the idea of everyone having healthcare or higher education. She didn't say her kids are drug addicts, criminals, or degenerates. Everything she said suggested they are upstanding, successful kids. I'm not going so far as to say "shame on this lady" because we don't have the details, but what I heard was pretty concerning as a parent myself.

I suspect a lot of parents are confronted with this issue. Your children who you've raised and supported reject your values. I understand Dave's reaction but I know of parents who have been devastated by this, and no longer have much of a relationship with their son/daughter. often because their children no longer wish have them as a part of their lives. The vast majority of people in Monique's situation shrug, hope their kids figure it out at some point, and keep them in their will. Some people do view the World different at 40 than they did at 25, but some do not.
I wan to know what makes them socialists? They have good jobs and it sounds like are doing well.

Don't walk away from the Lord, and true freedom is found walking with Him. Don't worry about believing that religious stuff it doesn't save you from sin. Only Jesus can, you just need to believe you're a sinner and deserve eternal separation from Him and death. There will be a time when it's too late to believe. God leads His people to believe certain things out of love for Him, real believers don't see it as a chore. And you need to believe to be saved, you don't need to be an extreme capitalist to be saved, and it's very unbiblical to tie that to Christianity and say Christians have to think that way. God gives us different values, but please... Living in sin can look free but it's all a lie.

As a rich friend of mine put it when we discussed what he was leaving to the kids "I will give them enough money to do anything, except nothing"
He was was willing to give them enough for a comfortable life, but still have to work.
He passed about 10 years ago, and it has worked out very well.

There’s no need to tell offspring what’s in your will or trust.
Its actually a good idea if you'd like it to not be contested. While true you can let it be a surprise, but its way harder to contest if you let everyone involved know the terms years before you die.

As to ingratitude, we don't know what they are saying to their mother or doing to her to show if their appreciation or lack thereof.
