    I’ve been using Total Gym/ GTS since 2005. I would purchase this machine in a sec but $2500-$2200 US for this “evolved” upgrade is absolutely ridiculous when I paid $799 Canadian in 2020 for a Total Gym Fit on the TSC (Canada’s QVC). I really like the ability to have the glide board ride horizontally, especially for trunk twisters. For the premium price, and to introduce their new product, IMHO other premium accessories should be included, such as a Pilates bar, a weight bar, and dip bars, and adding some resistance bands could really set the machine apart. The swivels are a must as well, and adding to that a set of extra cables of varying lengths with carabiner clips would improve the exercise experience. Good clip!

    The TG exercise deck IS cumbersome, in that the cards are loose and it becomes a mess to keep them all in order. My first TG (purchased 1999) had a deck that was bound together with a spiral binder wire. It was easy to flip to the pages you wanted without losing convenient and orderly access to the workouts. I have remedied this for myself: I bought a three ring binder, half-sized, to fit the size of the deck cards. I didn't want to punch holes in the cards, so I bought the plastic document holders that are available for ring binders, where you slip the document into a plastic sleeve with three holes already built in. They do make the plastic document sleeves at the half size as well. There are no half-size dividers I could find that worked well, (size issues), so I made my own dividers out of poster board, with my own tabs cut into the dividers with an Xacto knife. Before this, I never bothered much looking through the exercise deck. Now I refer to is all the time, as it is easy to handle and flip from one card and section of the deck and still keep everything in order for quick and easy location of the cards I want. As for the Evolve, it looks very nice. If I didn't already have the FIT, (bought last year off QVC for $699.00...with a cornucopia of attachments!) I would seriously consider this machine. But...I'm happy with the FIT, so that'll be my model until...who knows?

    23:00 Another consideration in addition to value/functionality/price, is space. Sure $2200-2500 might get me a lot more hardware. But I don't have a big ol' garage. I live in a 600 sq foot apartment, and while I would love to have a squat rack and a big home gym in general, it's simply out of the question. So the TG is closer to ideal for what I want in a home gym.
    Having said that, my 4-year old FIT more than suffices for my needs, so I likely won't upgrade to the Evolve unless I can get it at a lower price.

  • @SkylerKingTW
    @SkylerKingTW Месяц назад +1

    Just looking at this, it appears to be a legitimate improvement over older designs. The dual, side by side uprights made from square (or maybe rectangular?) tubing. The foot shape. The glideboard being able to change angle is a very obvious improvement that people have been specifically asking about for years. I also notice that the holes for the weight bar attachment are closer to the middle of the glideboard, which is another thing that I remember people asking about many dozens or hundreds of times. I even ended up modifying my old XLS to have additional weight bar holes in the middle of the glideboard. The 500lbs weight limit is a huge deal, too, especially given the adjustability of the glideboard angle. And it finally has WHEELS! That is another modification that has been common with a lot of Total Gym users. Having wheels makes all the difference in the world.
    This is the first Total Gym I have seen that actually tempts me to upgrade from my XLS... Though, I have no idea how much it would cost to get one shipped to Taiwan, lol.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  Месяц назад

      @@SkylerKingTW I was wondering the same thing about the holes but I guess they are thee for the basic function of how the board adjusted. But I do think they took all the best parts of all recent models and threw them all into one. I think you’d dig it for sure.

      My first Total Gym, bought in 1999, had wheels attached. This video (ruclips.net/video/l4ukz6ipPg8/видео.html) shows a slightly later and very slightly updated model that is 99% physically identical to the one I had. You can see the wheels at the bottom of each side of the ladder. I loved that model! I let it go when we moved across several states, as I was unsure if we would have room for it. All of the Total Gyms are essential the same-- that is, a cable and pulley system with a glide board. My advice is to buy a used one from Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I bought mine for $100. A Total Gym is excellent if you want to do a light workout or work on eccentric exercises, train to failure with nonmaximal effort, or for static holds or pauses. Vladimir Zatsiorsky, the renown former consultant to the Soviet Olympic Teams and Louie Simmons both recommend rotating new exercises and strength training methods to avoid muscular accommodation, which can result in decreased performance and stagnation. The Total Gym offers a different kind of stimulus to home gym users.

      There can be few things that can tweaked with position on the machine. But you could first try to make sure you're pressing through your chest line (or middle of your chest). At the start try to feel or concentrate on the muscles in your chest stretching, then squeeze/focus on that same spot as you press. Hope that helps

    I have to say “You Are The Man” to acquire another Total Gym on the higher price point. The Evolve is a bit too rich for my blood. I don’t think the functionality of the Evolve is any different than the Fit model or any of the smaller frame models of the Total Gym line up. I finally pulled the trigger on QVC and picked up the Total Gym apex 3 Plus at the sale process of $299.00 because it came with the ab crunch accessory with is half the price ($160.00)of the Apex 3 Plus when on sale.
    So far so good as I only use the Total Gym as a drop set accessory when incorporated to my barbell and dumbbell strength training routine. My wife loves it and uses it more than me which is great.
    Overall, I just can’t see myself spending that much money for a Total Gym despite the bench can be set at a flat surface.

      @@hybridresistance Mike, I still have the have the Ultimate Bodyworks and it’s in great condition as I still use it. As you had mentioned resistance bands are the best source of resistance for a sliding bench fitness equipment. I find myself using them on the Total Gym exclusively, especially when the glide board is on a lower incline. I’m using 13 inch flat bands from Clench Fitness and they work great. The setup is loop one end of the band on the edge of the front crossbar (be sure to loop the other band on the other end) and loop the other end of the band on the weight bar attachment.
      The resistance is felt immediately. Thanks to you for showing the possibilities of adding additional resistance on a sliding bench trainer.👍🏾

    Mike, just a thought. If I’m not mistaken the gentleman from HUCK is an engineer. Is it possible for him to build a mechanism which would turn the FITS glide board into something similar to the EVOLVE. Could you ask? I would LOVE to upgrade to this from my XLS, but that price is impossible... I mean even the Fit and XLS at retail price is high and not worth the price for most, but double the price of the Fit is just crazy. The upgrades are marginal and some parts are downgrades but Total Gym is definitely taking advantage of their "Whales" first and probably will eventually allow discounts and such; especially if not a lot of people buy the Evolve.
    But darn... well I will keep my eyes peeled for a marketplacd deal to see if I can get one for a good price down the line.
    But that price would easily get anyone more versitile equipment: it would easily get you:
    1. A very nice squat rack with 300lbs of weight plates and a nice barbell.
    2. A functional trainer with dual 200lb stacks and attatchements.
    3. A full Harambe system and a X3 system along with all the bands you would eved need.
    4. Two pairs of Rep x Pepins adjustable dumbells up to 125lbs each.
    I mean come on, its still only residential quality. They really don't care about designing a better product overall, they only focus on their main demographic (older folks and fitness newbies) to sell these which is sad because there is a massive market that could be tapped. One day once I get better with my CNC machine, I'm gonna design and build some selectorized arms and to add to my XLS and see if I can add more variety... but this is still a couple years away.

    You are right about the name, it would have been better off just selling the glide board as an evolved accessory to existing total gyms with better wheels. Better to penny-pinch than try to make an overpriced item and hope it sells well when they are so alike. The test now will be to see how well the glide wheels hold up and are those plastic pullies going to be a replacement item.

      I got my first TG in 1999. The pullies in that TG were plastic, and in all the years I had and used that TG, they never needed replacement. The glideboard wheels, however, did need to be replaced after about three/four years. I bought my replacement wheels from HUCK PRODUCTS, who are still in business and providing high quality replacement parts for the TG. (I now have a FIT, and I will buy some replacement wheels--and cable--from HUCK PRODUCTS without waiting for either to wear out, but to have them on hand when the time comes.)

There's nothing new in this design. Having a paper based training deck feels dated in today's digital world. I like the idea of mount for a tablet or phone to offer digital content like workouts, interactive training programs, etc. Personally I'd like to see an integration with a pair of Maiak Trainers (or similar systems) for digital resistance and an interactive screen to compete with the emerging digital gym space. However, would you say that this model appears to be the first that has finally crossed a "beefed up" line such that those of us using it in reasonably rugged ways can feel less nervous about abusing it (like I have our used XLS with additional weights, bands, etc)? On that note, I don't believe you mentioned anything about any upgrades to the wheels which are notoriously a weak point (hence why you, myself and others, end up having to find more durable replacements).
    All that said, if US commenters are finding this expensive, spare a thought for those of us overseas, like here in Australia, where this will likely end up being more expensive than full functional trainers (although considerably more compact of course).
