For me a wide grip on the latpull down feels really uncomfortable in my shoulders and in the beginning of my fitness journey I think I pulled something there. So I never went back, thinking I was physically unable to do it. Glad I learned the truth at some point and looking back this feels kinda silly, but when you’re new to all of this, stuff like this can really drag you down. So thanks Dr. Mike for putting this out 👍🏻 You might’ve opened up a newbie’s eyes and kept them going

I remember picking up that gripping wider or narrower will target the outer or inner part of your lats more respectively, but I’m personally not sure if that’s completely true and how much of a difference it actually makes. My best advice to you would be to just try around a bit and find out what feels best to you personally. As long as you feel your lats you’re good to go.
Yup. Same here. My shoulder gets all snap, crackle and pop when I do wide grip lat pull downs or pull-ups. Thankfully, medium grip doesn’t cause that problem.
You gotta do a lot of stretching exercises beforehand. It doesnt target the lats nor the glutes as much as other exercises. IMO its not really worth it.

I would guess that maybe the elbows tracking inward like that pre stretches the lats. And a supinated grip sort of naturally keeps them turned in. That's just a guess though.
@@qp9259my thinking is that the lat runs along my ribs/spine idk but it runs upwards when I stand up, and the lat pull down with narrow grip has my hands traveling at that same angle
its the exact opposite. Both grips will hit midback. You can't isolate one from the other. Narrow grip will just get more bicep involvement due to your elbows having to bend more during the rep.
I mean, height should not matter outside of athletic selection and other very specific situations. No one can change how tall they are, does not make them more or less of a great man/woman.

Instead of standing on the sit pad and dropping in, I like to pull the weight pin out, set the lat pull down bar to the appropriate height by moving the base weight up, and placing the pin further down the stack. There’ll be a gap in the weight stack and you can’t do this on heavier weights, but it gets the job done!
Define no penalty. It's fine bc it works, doesn't mean it's not working on the same muscles. Wide grip is more lat do my dominant, aka becoming wide. Narrow grip is more mid dominant and uses more bicep, hence it's easier, and gives more thickness. You should use both throughout your training.
@@Enyamasparw no I didn't. Wide grip increases width, narrow grip increases thickness. I was a gymnast and still very active, and have degrees on human bio. I can do 2x body weight pullups for sets of 10-15 with proper form, I guarantee I know more about this topic than you do.
I like the Mike Mentzer style super close supinated grip. Nice and heavy on the biceps, with a super deep lat stretch at the top. Give it a try, I swear it's good.

I'm only 5ft and i struggle using some of the gym equipment. If Mike can do it, I won't complain anymore. I thought I was the only person that had to stand on the bench to grab the bar.

Switching thumb position and overhand to underhand also changes a lot. It's an exercise with a surprising amount of valid and simple variations.

Yeah that’s what I’ve felt as well, only issue for me is more narrow hits my arms more so it’s rly hard to maximize my lat engagement

I find a narrow grip feels more comfortable and I am activating my lats more than when I use a wider grip. Glad to know there's no penalty.
