I really like how her page hits all of the checkboxes for being something not only young people new to fitness, but really anyone new to it could get into. 1. She's clearly a down to earth human with no ego at all. Her content, and she as a person that she puts out there 'feels' real, which means real people will gravitate to it, and want to listen and absorb. 2. Her advice is pretty simple and accessible for anyone, with any budget, and most importantly, largely damn sound advice minus a few exercises that aren't as necessary. and 3. Her form on exercises is just really, really good. I think he's definitely right about the high volume for legs. It's almost like she's a young Platz, and has been so obsessed with legs for so long, that they are just cyborg legs at this point that can handle more volume than the average person training.
I tried that booty band pushup. I have hypermobility and struggle with keeping form and injuring myself during pushups, whether they're on the knees or on the wall or whatever. My shoulder blade is feeling pretty good on the band pushups. Hopefully I can work up to doing real pushups, but if not, its still more ideal than injuring myself and giving up on them. Its pretty comfortable and does not ride up with the fabric kind.
I also used the band assist to rehab my pushups! Eliminated my elbow pain and allowed for better form, while building confidence in the movement doing more reps. I also used inclined pushups to add more volume with less load, and finally got back to a full strict pushup! The band was a good regression for me when I struggled so much and hated pushups- now I want to train for higher volume and harder variations in the future, love that it is an exercise I can do anytime and anywhere!
In regards to doing squats starting heavy, a trainer that I had for a while had me do a warmup set, then 3x working set for squats, and then after the third set, immediately drop weight down as far as I needed to and bang out 20 with no rest between. That was by far the most effective leg workout I've had - he had me do it with squats, leg press, etc.
I always get people started with a basic bodyweight squat routine. Typically get them working on it for 3 weeks. It builds some basic muscle mass and endurance as well as helps stretch the ankles and knees and builds good movement patterns and balance for when we get the bar on their back. Most people I train are barely able to handle the bar at a useful depth on day 1. Bodyweight squats for 3 weeks, every other day, adding 1 rep each time, starting with 4 sets and whatever they can handle comfortably and every time they hit 26 reps, dropping 5 and adding 1 set... Most people can handle 40-60kg on their back after that, even females.
I really enjoyed your humor when evaluating these movements as it did not distract from her instructions (or your corrections), or detract from the the young lady's efforts. There were a couple of these operations that I was unfamiliar with and excited to try out. Thank you.
These kinds of critique videos perfectly illustrates Dr. Mike as a level-99 God-tier exercise scientist. He knows all the moves; every exercise, and all the little nuances and optimization techniques. Lean Beef is my favorite, because I can see her processing and thinking things out like I do. We've soaked up all this knowledge on weight lifting, but we all have our own little ways of making the workouts best for "us". We all have different body types and genetics. The same thing that works for her, may not work for you.
Good to know about the assisted pull-up machine being better than the bands. I've been told by a few pepole that I should be using the bands instead. So this was really helpful!
1:18 in fact it’s actually still beneficial to do these, especially when you need assistance. Some people are weaker. It helps you become stronger using assistance short term.
I literally like your vibe and, of course, your sense of humor while you make those remarks. Is that type of smart, based sense of humor which spice up the explanations, along with the realistic approach of training. Great content, informations and charisma.
She is super cool and a dork but that's great because she's not a scam. Her efforts in her videos are to help help ppl with their fitness journeys and she is sharing what works for her s d very well could work for us, especially the simple and basic work outs such as the ones in the video as well as nutrition. I'm a big husky guy but following her workouts is HE11 for me. In a good way haha. I'm always challenged when following her techniques and sets. I'm not trying to be huge but be stronger and more capable and have that muscle density that I don't think size could give. So I always really push for slow and controlled movements over heavier weights and faster harder reps.
I really like the idea of these kinds of videos. So many influencers with their advice & your unbiased, fair opinion for rom & optimization is really great insight to have. I hope there's a lot more of these coming! Thanks Dr. Mike
I just found out about your channel. I don't really know what I'm doing, but thankfully, steady-state cardio is simple and I've been seeing good weight loss results. I was drinking a few times a week and NOT just 1 or 2 drinks, but many and I've been living that way for 15 years. From that experience, I consider myself a professional on how you shouldn't deal with the loss of loved ones. I'd think "They wouldn't be proud of how I'm living now, but that doesn't matter - they're gone", which fueled my self-hatred, which fueled my drinking, which fueled my self-hatred and so on. For years, I've wanted to quit drinking and focus on my diet, exercise and to reach my goal of having a healthy body that makes me proud of myself in the mirror instead of dodging my reflection when I go into the shower every day. I only just started my life without alcohol, but already, I feel motivated and I feel proud and when I think on what my lost loved ones would say, I hear them in my head, saying "Finally woke up? About time. Now, go be who you actually are. Go be who I wish I was still around for. No more running away. It's time to run forward." The 'bottle' is poison and I hate it, but I no longer hate myself. I'm 34, 6'3" tall and I was at 310. Now, I'm at 279 (just weighed this morning), moving toward the 210 - 220 range. I'm 1/3rd toward my goal. It's so much easier to exercise every day than it is to hate myself, but it was a major struggle to finally decide to stop running away. If you read all this, wow (this was more for myself than anything), but if is helpful in any way to anyone, it was worth sharing. I know I'll always love and miss those I've lost, but now, those losses are my strength and I'll never allow them to become excuses ever again. This community is where I belong.
I'm glad to hear you're turning your life around. Keep up the hard work. Stay motivated, build discipline to carry yourself through the low motivation times.

Should be in movies haha Great commentary, great jokes, seems like a complete natural on camera. Learning a ton and I know I can trust what he says because he’s a doctor. I’ve tried watching other RUclips workout “gurus” and I never feel like I can trust what they say.

I know you gave her an A- and generally liked her advice but calling her “awkward nerd girl” is a reason you two should do a workout together 😂 would be a great show!
Your advice on pull-ups is absolutely 100% correct. My partner and I are both recovering from shoulder injuries, and so we have had to use alternatives to pullups, the lat pull down has been our go to
I wanna see her on the channel cause I think she comes at training from a good place just a different mindset and perspective so I think it'd be an awesome collab!
These videos are a God send. While I am an expert in my field, I am no expert in exercise science, but like most people I am inundated by bs, so I am learning. Thank you.
I almost always do reverse pyramid for a majority of my lifts. Never was 100% on the science behind it but was always just more comfortable from a safety and injury prevention standpoint.
This channel is great, not only some of the best advice but also the funniest! Shoutout to Athlean X as well, him explaining what is happening to muscles in particular exercises has helped me a lot, especially with his pull up video.
I just started following you not too long ago and your videos have not only helped with growth and fatigue recovery, but they also have the most hilarious takes. The "We'll be right back" absolutely made me bust out laughing in front of my friends.
Had my last chest workout for my mesocycle with a great chest workout. Gotta hand it to ya, thanks to you i went to failure i didnt even know i can reach. Thanks a lot ❤️
I notice that you talk non-stop about hypertrophy but never about muscle memory and learning the movements. There are a lot of people out there who don't know how to move their limbs or perform exercises correctly. I highly recommend using low weight and doing a large number of repetitions to internalize a movement and target the muscle accurately. For example, when I was learning how to correctly perform the reverse pec deck, I used a low weight on the machine and did a ton of reps. During this time, I focused on exactly targeting the muscle I wanted to engage and making it burn. After doing this a few times, I gradually increased the weight until I could barely engage the muscle i wanted to hit anymore. I then used this weight as my starting point. This approach works with every exercise, especially with machines, and is perfect for beginners to develop good technique and understand how much weight to use.
I started watching lbp when my back went out and the pt i was assigned want enough anymore. I love her mobility focus. Plus i recently went back to PT and asked them to asses my exercises i got from her channel and make sure they were appropriate for me, i got complimented on my posture and technique. Channels like hers dont remove the need for personal sessions with a professional, but it can help you find exercises that you are willing to do an/or actually enjoy doing.
I believe the thinking behind the arched back during the stiff leg deadlift is that it must target the glutes more in the same way as it does during a 45 degree back extension (I've never felt that to be true personally, but maybe I'm different). You can see her do exactly that in the very next exercise.
I have to admit, I came into this super skeptical. I've checked out quite a few reviews by other content creators of RUclipsrs' workouts I was interested in over the last few years. Often times I've found them to be a bit hollow. They'll say "This is good," or "This is bad," without going in depth to explain how the exercise could be improved or what they think was good about it. That being said, you've restored my want for a well informed opinion on workouts. Your overall critiques and even your small, "pedantic" ones were extremely helpful and, to me, really showcased your expertise in the field. It's refreshing to have someone look at these workout videos from an objective and scientific stand point and truly take the time to expand on what they're seeing. I'm very excited to find some effective workouts through you and apply your critiques in my own practice. Thanks for what you do 🫶
Band assisted pullups helped me just get started. Today I can crank out 20 pullups (real pullups not those that crossfit people do :P ). Would not knock it to hard.

3:44 i think the soft knee SLDL was meant to be more for the glutes than hamstring. for this year i've done SLDLs RP style with a lordotic spine and by golly my hamstrings have grown since but now i've felt my glutes lag a bit. i've screwed around with SLDL to be more hyphotic and the slight bend in the knee and i can use my glutes better through the exercise. i'm aware of the dr. mike deficit glute deadlift exercise but i'm still working on technique for that doesn't make me feel it so much in my lower back and even quads. i might be going too low at this point but what Patty is demonstrating seems to be more for the glutes.
If I wanted to emphasize the glutes more in a RDL/SLDL I'd follow the Jeff Nippard cue of treating the top of the movement like a vertical 'hip thrust' and focusing on contracting the glutes.

Hey doc, I came up with a great pullup variation for intermediate beginners struggling to get their pullups. They’re called box pullups and you set a height where you lightly rest on your toes and pull with your upper body and only until you need the assistance start applying pressure through your legs to help complete the rep, that way you don’t lose the tension from the bottom of the rep, and have that extra layer of assistance!
I love how you are at once pointing out poor spelling and punctuation, exercising a great vocabulary, while also being a potty-mouth. But really - your commentary around each exercise and what's right (and wrong) with the execution is extremely helpful.
Appreciate the constructive critique. Rather than just ragging out the streamer, you gave really good ideas to improve. Great to see. Both useful to streamer and your audience.
I think the main reason people look down is because they're uncomfortable looking straight forward at the gym. Potentially also trying to be respectful of the other people. It's not a good reason to compromise your workout, but it is a reason.
It’s the booty building new trend. I guess Bret Contreras started getting women to round the back a little and look down when doing back extensions to target glutes…. Now it’s spread to girls rounding any exercise they can to target the booty.

And she shows her anus off well you forgot that
I found this channel 3 months ago. I was 260 at 5'7" now Im 230 and Im feeling better than I ever have. Love the content. Love the tips.
Have you tried bench at low weight?
2nd on doing bench at low weight to “rehab push-ups.” It’s similar & you’re less likely to get injured than pushing your whole weight
Have you tried just having less mobility. Like maybe anti stretch or injure yourself so you get inflamed that usually limits my range of motion
@@santi_super_stunts2573 lol does that really work? I’ve got that problem in my shoulders
Dr. Mike is not only a legend in the workout game. But also ****ing hilarious. The world needs more Dr. Mike.
Few people have this knowledge, few are willing to share it, and far fewer have great communication skill, with self-effacing humor to go along with it. Truly one of the best 👍

@@martingindulis5310because exercise is a science and you can always do it a little better. Faster, stronger, bigger, less risk of injury and so on.

Lean Beef is my favorite, because I can see her processing and thinking things out like I do. We've soaked up all this knowledge on weight lifting, but we all have our own little ways of making the workouts best for "us". We all have different body types and genetics. The same thing that works for her, may not work for you.
Good point. There is an ideal exercise position as we all have a different rom and where we feel the muscle
God bless you Dr. Mike for spreading so much information while keeping us entertained.

Good to know about the assisted pull-up machine being better than the bands. I've been told by a few pepole that I should be using the bands instead. So this was really helpful!

Hell yeah brother

Great breakdown. I enjoy Patty's videos too. Would be awesome to see you 2 collab.

Everyone is different, for some her technique is perfect. She will have the mind muscle connection to make that assertion for herself
No she's just not dialed in with the technique. Don't make excuses for her lol.

Would a beginner have the control required, though. Most would immediately start pushing.
@@soumen_pradhan That’s why I said beginner intermediate, you need to develop a certain amount of pulling power for this variation to be effective.
Dude, theres LOADS of videos of people doing exactly that with different variants. It's not like it hasn't been tried .
I love how you are at once pointing out poor spelling and punctuation, exercising a great vocabulary, while also being a potty-mouth. But really - your commentary around each exercise and what's right (and wrong) with the execution is extremely helpful.

Good work LBP. I love it when people get creative without the need for a gym.
I thought it was of precausing a overflexed back and causing back injuries. Now im confused
