I figured it out. 😉 My XJ is a black diesel. I have open diffs currently but in the spring I plan to put 33s and Detroit Truetracs front and rear.

Sounds like the 4.0 XJ has at least one locker- did he have both front and rear?

The guys were all in the 4 high and I was in 4 low by 4:08. The Jeep began to slide a lot and I needed more wheel spin. Than I put in 4 hi and it start moving.
