Hugh, thanks for all the good work that you do. But, please note, as some of the other commenters have mentioned, it is fruitless polishing a lens. This changes its optical characteristics, affects its focus and adds other aberrations. Cleaning a lens is fine but, if it is scratched or otherwise damaged, you should replace it.

At 3:22 the reason why it got worse after polishing the lens, is not because more scratches, but polishing actually removes a small layer from the top, thereby distorting the focal length of the camera. The only way to fix it, is by replacing it. And for the love of all, please stop using that disgusting glue for the screen and back, instead use generic double sided tape of various sizes or better yet factory cut one if available. @@soupdrinker72- "Tastes good"? What's wrong with you?! lol Gluing screens and back are a disgusting hack job, the lazy man's choice. Good luck repairing it again.
He has double sided adhesive which he normally uses, but given the bent frame, double sided adhesive might not actually fit to the bent frame properly, hence the use of liquid adhesive. In the right circumstances, E8000 is OK.
I'm thinking that the camera sensor and lens assembly is not unique to this phone. You could probably find out what model sensor assembly it is using and find a replacement for another phone. Take the lens off of that sensor, and your good to go.
That lens polishing and misaligned lens after taking it on and off caused that image to get even worse. The lens is screwed in to specific height away from the sensor for it to function correctly.
Not bad at all, even in that condition, I'd still happily buy such a device. I'd also keep an eye out to see if any stockists decided to stock the ultrawide camera again at some point. Would it be possible to use a camera off another device, which has the same connector?
That could work, as many manufacturers just use the same parts. It might also be worth a shot to try and find another identical phone that's broken, and use the frame and camera from that model.
This was the first phone I ever repaired myself (after being encouraged by watching your videos) it was successful and the replacement charging port has been working fine ever since. Hugh you are a great, inspirational person!
After a few phone repairs, I learned my lesson not to rub the camera lens and stopped bothering with them ever again. Those lens i thought it was glass is actually made of plastic and scratch easily, even with a soft microfiber cloth. Now I just immediately slap a piece of sticky paper on the lens, the same kind you get with screen protectors. That way, I don't have to worry about damaging the lens while I'm working on the repair.
Spinning that lens will change the focus and I think what happened is it was not screwed right when you tried after using the polishing paste, because such lens scratches shouldn't appear that sharply on the screen, so it looks like like the sensor was focused on the lens and not "using" the lense, you had to have the phone on and spin the lens until the image looks better, but i guess you'd still have had the blurry halos on the sides. Also I'd have tried polishing with a cotton bud on a drill, with different pastes, the one you used seemed too harsh
The focus is not closeup because of the fixed focal length. All of the smartphone cameras have fixed focal lengths. The fixed focal distance is the issue.

A bit unfortunate that it turned out to be a slightly subpar repair result, specially compared to your usual excellent works (I see why this video took longer than I had thought it would :)) I think for the camera, if the exact sensor model and specifications were to be known listed, then you should be able to attempt to find another camera from another device which also uses the same sensor as an ultrawide, even if despite the lens from that camera were to have different specs in aperture and focal length; If the camera had the same connector which it generally should, you could just transplant the whole module over onto this phone and it should be compatible at least enough to function just fine, since ultrawides as comparatively quite a lot simpler compared to other camera modules such as main wide or telephoto, since those tend to have more functions such as optical image stabilization, or advanced fast autofocus, etc. which the ultrawides does not tend to have, generally, due to the wide field of view; which this seems to be the case as well judging by lens assembly So there a good better change that it would work with the camera drivers and library or modules cade that this phone would have with its firmware
