I believe that the Death Note just brings out the worst in people. Even a Good Samaritan can become a tyrant if they have absolute power.

"Power does not corrupt, it reveals" like Tighten from Megamind, losers become tyrants when given a taste of power. Light wasn't a loser but he was a typical moody teenager in a world where he was high status and could get away with bad behavior, that's even more risky than a loser getting power. Even in real life, rich kids always get away with terrible crimes

It doesn’t turn you into something you could never be it just turns you into the worst possible version of yourself. So short answer yes and no.

Light was evil the moment he started killing criminals.
The Shinjuku killer and the motorcycle guy were committing heinous crimes when their names were written.
However, the rest of the criminals were killed after conviction. Prison is the punishment of the convicted. Adding the death penalty unnecessarily is evil.

I agree with everything you said in this video..... Absolute power corrupts absolutely.... The only way Light could've saved himself from being the victim of the Death note(ignoring the fact that he'd have a bad end anyway as Ryuk said) was if he stopped at the start.... When his hands used to shake while killing.... When he vomitted after killing a person.... It was basically like a serial killer killing for the first time.... His hands would always shake, he'd rethink whether he should kill or not.... But after killing a few ppl he'd get, more comfortable in killing to the point human lives are insignificant to him as shown with Light.... After crossing a certain mark Light himself had decided that he'll kill anyone who'll come in his way(He wouldn't have killed Lind L tailor if he introduced himself when Light's killings were in single digits) after a certain point he was too far gone.... Also in my opinion what Light wanted when he said it's too early was that he subconsciously was unhappy that because the rate of criminals and wars etc is so low after a certain point crimes will stop happening and airing all together.... There would be nothing left for him to do..... He'll get bored again cause there would be no goal left especially cause Near would be dead at that point.... Light imagined a perfect world in the start but after a certain point The perfect world was almost meaningless to him.... He got a taste of the blood and liked it.... So if Light achieved his perfect world he'd have no reason to kill anymore..... That's why he wanted to set his goals for the future that'll continue to amuse him and feed his ego as the God of the new world.... That is to say I wouldn't say Lights intentions were never good.... Sure A perfect world was always his 2ND goal but till a certain point he really would've just wanted a world where there was no crime......

@@Dhairya3333 you know I always wondered if Light would get bored again once he cleansed the world of crime. He definitely wants to live a long life as a god, but it makes you think what else would he do to fulfill his boredom

I think the best answer to this question is, while Light is investigating before his memory returns, he thinks to himself “damn this really does seem like something I would do if I had the death note though?” When looking at all the evidence. And throughout the show, lots of characters comment on how they might be corrupted if they had that power too. I’m pretty sure anyone who disagrees does so out of a lack of media literacy, as the show and manga bend over backwards to let us know that the Death Note corrupts because power corrupts.

One more thing to add on Misa because I think her arc is one of the most interesting in the show. When we meet Misa, she explicitly lets us know that her reasons for using the death note are selfish and she is well aware of this. Misa is the only user of the notebook that actually survives and does so without obviously severe longterm consequences, in fact her career is better than ever by the time the show ends. When we look at HOW Misa uses the Death Note, there is a key difference between her and every other user: Misa never used the book for her own power. She definitely could have used it to accelerate her career, but instead she chose to seek out Kira and essentially hand her notebook over to him. She only really uses the book when Light instructs her to do so, and carefully follows his guidelines. Mello wanted to use the notebook to defeat Near, Light and Mikami felt they were morally superior to other people and wanted to create a world where they were the gods, and the whole Yostuba murders arc is a clear power grab as well. The only thing Misa actually cares about is Light. So, I believe Misa’s form of misery from her usage of the Death Note is in her loss of Light, as nothing in the world could hurt her more, not even death itself. So, it stands to reason that then misery inflicted upon the user is dependent upon their reasons for using the note in the first place and their ultimate goal; as in, the death note users are destined to never achieve their goals, as this is what will cause them the most misery.

Not really, the author confirmed light always had a massive ego, even when light lost his memories, he still had signs of ego and wanting to prove to L and everyone else that he's not kira
But when he got the death note, it just brought out a much worst version of him

You can’t sell it either which Minoru finds out the hard way in the sequel one shot where at the end of the story the rule was added that if anyone tries to sell the death note, the person will die the moment they receive payment for it. Even though he didn’t use the death note, he thought he could make money from other people who did want to use it so in a way it corrupted him too.

    • @BlazingAuras

@@KyoryuDiabolos can't believe I forgot about Minoru. Some can argue from a financial pov that he's just as greedy as Higuchi, but I say Higuchi is still more corrupt since Minoru did help most people in Japan earn money in their Yotsuba accounts.
