I have to say that this one is worth restoring to its former Noir glory. A terrific flick.

The couple at the amusement park at the beginning of the movie were really overdressed for a day at a park. But that is how people dressed for a day out back then. I remember going to the zoo one Sunday afternoon. We lived 50 miles away and our family car was an International pickup. Since there were 5 in our family, we kids rode in the back. Still, my sister and I wore our latest Easter dresses complete with hats and Sunday shoes. Today it’s shorts, T-shirts, and sneakers. I was about 10 years old at the time. And that was on into the early 50s.

5 in our family, I'm the youngster. Pics of older brothers and sisters when young, our father made them dress up. Boys in suits and ties and dress hats, girls in proper dresses, white gloves, hats. He trying to be the proper Boston Lawyer, which never really worked out. He finally gave up by the time I was old enough. But I dressed up for some events. Remember dressing in full black tux, as kid, for parents 25th Anniversary at some fancy restaurant in Boston. Also, father was ex WWII Navy Officer, so often went to Officer's Club for dinner at Navy Yard in Boston. Father later wore mismatched suit jacket and pants, or sportscoat to go to work, gave up on proper suits and hat.

Going through my Mom's papers recently I found a photo of she and me at the zoo in the 1950s and she is wearing a dress ! She looked great.
Look at the street scenes and the open landscapes. If you go there today it's probably all Wal-Marts and housing tracts and freeways.
Problems with the Mexican border and illegal smuggling. Then as now.

Really enjoyed the piano player, Fuzzy Knight! Sadly, it seems this was Hunt's last movie. She was a multi-talent. Real pity.
Eleanor Hunt starred in 'Bank Alarm' in 1937, after this, and then in 'Stolen Paradise' in 1940.
B movies can be more fun and entertaining than big budget movies.

B movie - set to fill second slot in a double feature, bargain night at the Ritz or Okla theaters. When I went to them, popcorn was 5 cents a bag, drinks were 5 cents, candy bars were 5 cents and it cost me a dime to get into the movie. No tv then.
$35 an ounce of gold? That's a bargain, I'll take 1/2 a ton.
I have to agree. He was stupid Dick on that one.
Factoring inflation, $35 back then was worth about $600 today. Fear of bad economic times, inflation / low value of the dollar, causes gold prices to go up, which explains its current value. The U.S. mint has been paying of U.S. debt by printing dollar bills that are only worth the ink and paper they are made of.
Gold isn't worth anything UNTIL YOU TRY TO SELL IT. And what do you get in return? The same worthless currency you tried to avoid. It all comes down to the purchasing power of whatever you have in your hand. 'Wealth' from gold is illusory.

My 2005 Chevy Suburban rides like a limo compared to my old 1980 Lincoln Continental. And they're both junk compared to the older cars when they had real frames, real bumpers, real bodies, and were worth maintaining. The cars of today won't be worth hundreds of thousands like the classic cars are.
Easy to repair. The only thing I'd change today is A/C.

Nothing like setting price controls, then controlling the supply once you have set the price. Whoever fixed the price and controlled the supply was the real racketeer.
A very astute observation. We are being manipulated like rats in a lab experiment.
The rationing during WW II was a HOAX. There was plenty of everything, but it was doled out in small amounts to CONTROL the public. There have been 'shortages' in the US since then when there was plenty of everything. It's all about CONTROL. Once the gov't----or whomever----gets you used to high prices, there will be plenty of anything you want.
FDR was the price setter.
Jack Duffy (Hinkle) was only 54 when he played an old geezer in The Gold Racket. In vaudeville, he’d been playing old men since he was in
his twenties. He made one more picture and died in 1939 at the age of 56.

Her movie credits ran from 1930 and Whoopee! to 1940 and Stolen Paradise. Eleanor never performed on TV. Her malleable appearance and hair-color changes gave her varying appearance which may account for a physical resemblance to another. Maye you’re thinking of Helen Hunt.

I still get dressed like I’m supposed to when going in public. I dress down if I’m doing something that I need to take care like getting dirty or sweating. It’s the civil thing to do.

Found it! It's a Ronson Mastercase lighter; a cigarette lighter and case all in one!

The piano playing and dance was torturous miserable...they should have hired the true artist...Ragtime and Swing...The caddy piano player played a cheesy erpy creepy character...he did not belong in this movie...fire the director....
Fuzzy Knight was a contract player and the script writer had this character in the script...so, Knight was put into the film for contract reasons - I'll bet the character was supposed to be what you'd find in a dive...what would you expect?

'Old Gold' is a term used for a darker and deeper tone. That tone is caused by either tarnish (all metals will tarnish sooner or later) or an admixture of some impurity. Gold-is-still-Gold.

Old gold was scrap gole. Pieces of jewelry, cuff links, plaques, etc.

Eleanor Hunt is worth the risk.
