I spent many Sunday mornings watching these on the floor in front of the tv.
A hidden gem of a crime noir flick. If some of it seems old hat keep in mind this was written before 1938. This is like the game plan for organized crime of the sixties through eighties - and the clumsiness of the law who suffers many indignities, often of their own mis-placed zeal. This was probably a bit relevant in it's time, more-so today. That makes it worth a look as a hidden gem.
What a great little "B" movie. And 79 years' old. Always happy to spend an hour watching these old movies which still give me so much pleasure. I was two years' old when this was made. The characters were well played and there really was quite a bit of atmosphere. Thank you for this.

The “good guys” in this movie who are suggesting that the constitution and bill of rights are outdated are much scarier than the bad guys.
The daughter did not know that ( it was a setup plan) that the courts knew and the Young lawyer knew but the daughter did not know she actually thought her father was going to jail. And of course neither did the bad guys know that it was a total setup .

been able to work with a variety of great actors and actresses of her day: such as Claudia Dell in A BRIDE FOR HENRY
(1937); Joan Barclay in CONVICTS CODE (1939); and also the infamous W. C. Fields in one of his biggest hit movies:
1941's NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK. She was also one of the rather few of her time who'd been able to be
cast in TV roles. Her very final role was in the 1st of 49 episodes of the series CIRCUS BOY -- which starred a little boy
of 11, Mickey Braddock: best known as the lead-vocalist of The Monkees. Mickey Dolenz, turned 75 on March 8th.
She fried her liver with booze. And being married for a brief time to the notorious homosexual 'Ross Alexander' didn't do her any good either.

Today's stars won't be as watched and enjoyed as the so-called nobodys when their hour upon the stage is over.
An instructive '30's crime-noir film i.e., criminal law is mainly about cracking down on poor snooks doing stupid capers and catching blue-collar jail-cover dims. The uptown white-collar thieves, like the execs at Wells Fargo Bank, walk away with hundreds of millions and float to safety on golden-corporate-parachutes. A swell retirement on investor's dimes.
You didn't mention that Wells Fargo Bank bought out the Norwest Bank in Minneapolis years ago. Norwest was a terrible place to do business. The staff treated you like crap on a routine basis and looked for every chance to screw their customers. I speak from experience.

I always liked Charles Trowbridge. He and Sam Flint and Samuel S. Hinds presented a solid and moral image to the viewer. And then there were Edwin Stanley and Selmer Jackson as well.

I hope this was just a movie, and a not a reflection on what a real district attorney back then would have done. Throwing a bomb out the window without checking if anybody was out there...putting those two thugs in jail with such a low bond that they would be right back out again. Good entertainment, but really a little naïve and silly.
