I usually have to hook mines as the first one because if I leave to much slack in the worm the bluegills would rip it off in one to two bites without even touching the hook

It depends on the species you're fishing for catfish in particular like more bulk and less length so bunching up the worm actually benefits you if you're going after catfish.

I di the worm ball a lot. The fish bite it because of the smell. The first version just gets ripped off.

Tried this technique it works pretty good for smaller fish , only issue I had was the fish kept stealing the worms and didn’t catch too many fish.
