That percussive breathing in his singing, let's not forget he started as a drummer. He had a ton of rhythm going on by the time he was fronting Soundgarden.
This song has always been my all time favorite Soundgarden song. Being able to hear Chris Cornell’s vocals isolated like this is more than I could’ve ever asked for🖤
1:45 Just intonation? 2:20 Forlorn? Sad/unlikely to be fulfilled? Perfect cadence vs pitch bending? 5:10 Overhead low-end roll-off on other records 6:45 Not recorded to a metronome 7:40 Depth from layering guitars 11:45 Michael Beinhorn (secondary-source reference) (exhales) 15:30 Argument for nasality and difference from 80s mixed voice 17:00 Michael Beinhorn (secondary-source reference) (comping vocals) 17:45 Analogue recording 21:30 Vowel modification / placement 26:50 5.1 surround sound remix by Adam Casper (gang vocals) 30:00 Breath part of a performance

Sorta the Mike Campbell of the 90s. That opening guitar tone is legendary btw. Got that Boss compressor bite to it…Then to soften it with a slide over top is what made Soundgarden.
Can definitely tell how close to home this song hits for you. The way you geek out over sound garden, you're expressing what were all feeling. Love it man, id love to see more
@@chrisliepe Who doesn't lol? You're awesome. Alot of guitar teachers on YT could take lessons from you. There's more to music than scales and technique- it's passion, performance, meaning, soul. Thank you man, I learn alot from you
"I SHOULD'VE STAAAAAAAAAAYED IN BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED" is indeed one of the most iconic moments in rock history. Also, I wonder whay some of that additional distortion is. Some parts sound more distorted than others, despite being sang with the same intensity. Is this perhaps the sound of a dying Neumann U87? Was more distortion added on purpose through tape saturation/preamp clipping/compression? It sure sounds amazing! :D
Dammit Chris, this is my favorite Soundgarden song. I guess there’s a 30 min video in my schedule today! You’re content is so great dude! Burden In My Hand next?
This has always been my favorite Soundgarden song. I listen to it often. I love every aspect of it. Chris Cornell's voice drew me in but everything seems to shine on this song to me.
Love your enthusiasm for this Chris and such a treat to hear all this stuff isolated, thanks so much! This is my number 1 Soundgarden song that I have similarly obsessed over for many years! If I can stop procrastinating I'm going to be working on my own full band cover of this as well as some other tunes of theirs so there's some gold in these thar hills! 😀
Keep on geekin' on, bro! I love track breakdowns like this. Although, there's rarely much that I don't/can't pick out from the full session. It's still cool to hear them separated.
Loved this! That record was so damn good! When I bought my first guitar as a kid, spoonman was the first song I learned. I just found your channel a couple weeks back, but I’ve loved everything I’ve seen so far. I spent 20yrs in the biz, touring most of it, but recording/producing and doing live audio as well so I thoroughly enjoy these artist study type videos & really appreciate the rarity of getting to listen to all these gems from so many talented artists! I would LOVE to see you do a video on Seven Mary Three! I always loved the way Jason Ross had so much raw power & gravel in his voice, but was so good at mixing it with crystal clear cleans. Anything off of American Standard would be so cool to see you break down! 🤞🏻🤘🏼👊🏻🎧🖤
Just... Wow ❤️ The first thing I noticed about the song was how complex it was for a famous song, and the other ofcourse was his voice, so very high and so powerful at the same time 🙌🏻
I finally built up the nerve to share some of my progress vocally after finding your videos! I keep going back to this video. I put “anxiety” by my fake band “blackout burning” on my channel. And the one called “overload” has a bunch of kind of free noise making stuff that I had fun with. Not trying to promo, I just want to share as proof of your videos efficacy! Like, your channel is a highly highly valuable resource, thanks for being a great inspiration.
Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing the in depth analysis of your favorite song. You really inspire people including myself to be true to who I am in the music created, and to follow your heart into the experience of your music for others to be inspired from, and experience in a unique way. Thank you for all your contributions and content on your courses and videos.
Hey Chris, amazing stuff as always, thank you. When I immerse myself in the nuances of songs like this and attempt to do them justice there's a lot of mental gymnastics involved... not to be perfect but to have the same emotional impact the original track(s) had. Not sure how possible that is but gotta keep trying.
I'm glad you made a complete breakdown of this song man because it was this song that 1. got me into soundgarden and 2. convinced me to learn how to sing
Have been listening to audioslave for years but last year I went deeper into his catalogue and discovered this gem! I've listened to it almost every day since then and I also found your channel through that and learned a lot about his technique! Thank you very much! You have a great way of teaching!
I love Cornell, and I love how you deconstructed this song. It really made me realize in full how great he was, and how much we can learn from his legacy. Keep rocking, Chris!
This should be called "anatomy of a masterpiece": how to understand a song in a technical and musical dissection. Good job. I can see how Chris was a talent in life that never ceases to amaze and inspire me.
The fantastic thing about that tuning is playing the same notes on different strings creates that chorus/flanger effect. My Wave is the same tuning, and has the same rich tone. I have a guitar dedicated to this album and it's crazy tunings.
Matt Cameron deserves more respect for his impact on the rock world over the years. Even his Pearl Jam stuff has some of my favorite drum parts like Got Some.
This is my fav SG song, outside of the music (that is fantastic in it's own ofc), the LYRICS, they did an excellent job. The entirety of this song makes you feel that mood of "I don't know if I want to exist in this exact moment" to finish w a "but things keep going".
He’s darkening his vowels as needed, and controlling his breath well, which is why he sighs at the end. To get that power on long notes, you need a full set of lungs, but, a fresh breath on the next phrase. ❤
could've put the song in the video title^^ you're absolutely right though! incredible song and this is a deep dive I'm especially excited for. btw check out btbam's cover if you haven't yet. very faithful to the original while adding a death metal edge to the chorus
Ya know, I went back and forth on doing that. I decided to leave it out so that more people WOULD click. I did a video just like this awhile ago for SPOONMAN... and it was one of the worst performing videos I've ever done because nobody clicked on it. This one, so far is beating all other chris cornell videos I've done recently. I totally get it though. I hate the "clickbait" thing, but I'm learning, that most people will just skip the video altogether if the title is specific. As long as the video delivers after they have clicked, I suppose it's fine. I still don't like it... but you see almost ALL of the successful RUclipsrs now doing more like this video suggests. Annoying, but the way of the endless scrolling internet has won at least for now!
@@chrisliepe I wouldn't see it that badly tbh. of course it depends on what you're trying to achieve right now with the channel, short-term vs long-term, etc. those are days worth of discussion^^ but let me tell you, of your loyal subscribers (like me :D), a big number of people would click on a video about a chris cornell song. especially knowing it's one that you covered in the past, which means the analysis will be extra awesome since you discover new things with us that you perhaps didn't know back when you did the cover. if you're aiming more for the casual non-subbed viewers, I get it and fair enough, but just know that videos like this are very appreciated by "us" old subs!
There’s a funny interview Kim gave that I remember - about him and Chris not being able to play slide at that point, so they removed all the strings but the ones they were playing
That chromatic chord progression and non-conventional time signature sounds crazy at first, but the drum beat and vocals bring it all together so well! Awesome breakdown.

Chris.....I'm a child of the 60s and 70s (born in 1953). You made me a fan of music I've heard for the first time. But I can't help to wonder how Chris would sing songs from my day. Can I request to hear you sing a CCR song like "Have you ever seen the Rain", or "Can't you See" by Marshal Tucker Band with a lot of grit? How about Hootie and the Blow Fish "Let her Cry". Then there is the high tone of Elton John with Levon, Daniel and many more hits. Bryan Adam's Grit is my favorite, with his hit Cuts Likes a Knife. Ok...I don't want to bore you. I'm sure many of your followers don't come from my time (followers comment if I'm wrong) so my guess a lot of the music I mention they may never heard. And who knows, you may make them a fan of what I call the Classics. I hope to hear one soon.....and maybe repeat a classic every once in a while. The style of singing from my era may bring on a new challenge for you to center a lesson/video around......Cheers..........Dan
the driven guitar tone "chorus" sound, to me sounds like they might have done the old tape trick, where you speed up the song and tune up to match the speed, record to tape, then slow the tape back down so the tracked guitars have this dark/deep sluggish tonality to them, while being at the proper pitch. The weird variations from the time change causes a lot of weird chorus-like strangeness.
Great analysis! Dark "nursery rhyme" description is SPOT ON. 🤔 Cornell often demonstrates how you don't necessarily need tons of minor chords to sound edgy or morose.
I think his accent had a lot to do with his tone, cos on "live" he sings it with quite a lot of "e", instead of "i". It's something that he does completely naturally, and he also does it when he's speaking, that's why I assume it must just be his accent.
Hey Chris, can you tell me about your video setup? I noticed it looks like you’re using your iPad to switch between screen capture and camera. What app or program are you using to do all this? Thanks
You might be able to do that with a Streamdeck. I’m not sure if it would be slower, but they are great. You’d also have to program it yourself, but it’s pretty easy. I think Elgato have an app as well. I’m not sure if that has exactly the same functionality as the hardware.
