2017, hm. The Last Jedi was the last time I went, Dec. 24, 2017 at 9:20PM, until Dune 2 this year. Why do I remember the exact time and date? 9 commercials preceded the trailers, they took 20 minutes to run through, before the 12 minutes of trailers began. It was Christmas Day when I got out of the theater parking lot. Some Christmas gift. Shameless gamesmanship and horrible entertainment. Recliners don't recline far enough, there's always garbage tucked in them, there's no way I'll pay more than $1.50 for any size drink or more than $2.75 for any size popcorn. Nacho's and cheese are worth $5.00, not $15. I can get on board with the ticket prices, that makes sense. Deadpool & Wolverine on Tuesday in I-max in Southern Ontario two weeks ago was $18.93. Reasonable, about $0.75 more than I felt justified for a matinee but, acceptable. Edit: yeah, fits my schedule, that's why I chose I-max, the regular screenings were before I finished work or an hour later than the I-max showing. An extra few bucks to get to bed at a reasonable time makes sense.
We need to rebuild the base of the movie going experience. Too often do we hear directors reminisce about the good ol’ days when a sloppy low budget comedy could bring in a crowd. Aside from the idods you have to yell at to shut it, I miss the days when you could have the vibes of a few hundred reacting to everything just as you are.
