KEITH LEVENE (RIP) 11/11/22. One of the GREATEST AVANT GARDE guitarists EVER. SO FAR AHEAD of the curve. Made 21st century music way back in the 1970s. So sad. :( :( :(
The very best of Pil. A far more interesting band musically than the 'Sex Pistols'. One of the truly important UK bands. Seminal, original, passionate inspiration. I used to play this all the time very loud driving everyone else crazy. Got me into bass. One of Lydon's very best. Also 'Bad Life', truly punk. No faking it 'Rock N Roll', like the relatively lightweight Pistols, A 'top of the Pop's parody of rebellion. *'Ever felt you've been had'?* With the talented Keith Levine and Jah Wobble, good drumming! Intense mourning his mom. Lydon's best. Mesmerizing darkness and pain!

I can identify with this song I’ve been a fan of PIL since early 80s and I know it’s about his mum dying from cancer, years later the same happened to my mum the last week of her life she was unable to speak and these lyrics kind of resonate with my mum, I miss her ❤
Sorry to disagree. Jah Wobble was a rubbish player. Listen to Norman Watt Roy from Ian Dury and The Blockheads. Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick. That is the bass line of the last century.
I didn't really care much for the Pistols but loved PIL. Am I alone here? This seems to be what J Lydon excelled at and what he should be best remembered for. This and Careering - pure magic, distilled intoxicating misery. Fantastic.

The late 70's / early 80's were an amazing time for music . This was a time music was mixing styles so much . Listening to this reminds me of ESG and some of the early post Disco .
Remember when music was THIS exciting? I miss it. RIP Keith. I never met you but you formed my late teenage guitar playing years with this work, along with John McKay, John McGeoch, Bernard Sumner and Paul Reynolds. Oh and anyone who comments that this is "rubbish" or "piffle" or whatever, have a look at "John Hassell - Vernal Equinox" and marvel at what passes for "genius" these days before you snipe at this work.
I see two Golden eras. The first, the better known Hippie era (the Beatles, Doors and Hendrix etc) and then the lesser known equally creative and brilliant 'Post punk era'. Pil, Lene Lovich, Siouxsie, The Cure, the Clash, The Furs, The Talking Heads, Ian Dury, and later Depeche Mode and the Stone Roses. Both creative peaks with mucho talent.
On that lydon proved, that you doesn't need a sad melodie to write a song about losing people (his mother). This Is much more powerfull than the other klichee-songs about this thema
Really quite splendid the way it gains momentum throughout the song. And a top performance by 3 of the worlds top musicians-John,Keith and Hugh Dennis. I never tire of watching this video.
Great songs are inspired by emotional events or experiences that happened the writer either consciously or unconsciously...like this and Yesterday by McCartney and Sing me back home by Haggard

Love this,,nice guitar harmonics riff up and down the fretboard at the very start, lifted from early Simple minds track" Murder Story" from the very underrated guitarist Charle Burchill.
The way the guitar, bass and drum come together at 18 seconds in. Sublime 👌

Yeah definitely ahead of his time but then pil were when you look back

This song was for the loss of his mum. Very powerful lyrics and a great tune.
did it kill her listenin to it?
No cos she was already dead she never heard it, she had asked John to write a disco song for her funeral, hence the title.@@thestaunt
She did hear it and loved it, words from the horse's mouth.
Wow thanks, I hadn't already read this 57 times in the comments. Thanks for clarifying.

No, you're not alone in this. I like way more PIL than The Sex Pistols too.
Not alone at all
He was singing into the void in pain on this song, it's a magnificent song
Absolutely, proper catharsis.
Never seen someone in as much distress as in this video. Pure adrenaline and raw emotion driving this song.
I rather think it's amfetamines.
one of the best bass lines in the history of mankind
From "God save the Queen" to this in only a couple of years. That's quite impressive!

Flowers rotting dead

Ending in a day
Silence was a way

This is what disco music should've sounded.
The bit of Tjaikovski used is brilliant.
Swan Lake!
Good catch! The melody was inspired by Tchaikovsky's _Swan Lake_
Virtually a mourning song you can hear John's screams of anguish come through at the loss of his mum.
When punk began to explore new territories... was the onset of a remarkable era... here the raw energy combined with the lyrical and introspective
Was that a quote from yr exams?

Punk died as soon as it was marketed and turned into a "genre" Johnny was always his own genre and he's likely damn proud of it

My favorite PiL song, probably one of my favorite songs period
Rest in peace Keith,so many great moments
I love Jah Wobble.
I love the use of the theme from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake". (In fact, PiL recorded another version of this song with that title.)
Ian Downey Isn't it the same, just an alternate title?
Like saying croatian isnt the same as serbian?
xddd
Andrew Barrett Hehehe, for me, Swan Lake and Death Disco are the same song.
The death disco version i slightly different than the swan lake album version. But yeah its the same song
