This song is talking about serious environmental issues that we need far more singers singing about! Much respect to John for tackling these issues in his lyrics!
Jesus Christ, I listened to this song when I was 7 years old on Rage on Saturday morning on ABC in Queensland. It stuck with me. I remembered it all these years, that chorus and that completely unique image of a man digging down into the dirt under his house for all eternity. Amazing song, amazing band, amazing man.
I remember listening to this song in the 90's. Liked it a lot but I didn't get the message then (english is not my mother tongue). Understanding the lyrics now, I must agree that indeed it's quite prophetic...
nothing prophetic about it at all. just shows that what stood then still stands now, nothing has changed at all, got worse in fact, but he could sing that song today and in 30 years it would still appear relevant.
John lydon, most honest, talented, good hearted, intelligent, truther, no bullshit taker guy! I love the intro-I love the way he turns his head on 1 side haha :) he looks handsome again here (I know it's old) and the lyrics have meaning. Sometimes he reminds me of the one that just squeaks of the muppets though haha but seriously, Lydon's my idol! I love his personality, music, interviews, style, bravery-everything.
I remember this debuting on radio (CFNY 102.1 The Edge in Toronto). Yet this is the first time I have EVER seen the video (24 April 2016)! Brrrrriliant!
Proper decent guy unlike most of the bastards passing themselves off as musicians today. Also warned us about Jimmy Savile back in the 70s... Got banned from the BBC for it 😡🤬
This guy is a legend, a monument, the 11th wonder. He should live in a fucking castle or even a pyramid and all haters, comfortable behind a pc keyboard, should kiss his pub(l)ic hair. With PiL and as soloist Mr. Lydon challenged many paradigms in music/industry. A radical innovator, still feeding ideas to new bands nowadays with sharp/ironic/iconoclastic lyrics and weird tunes.
Cos they have always been going on about the environment. It was the ozone layer back then. Nothing changes, because people can't think for themselves.
I love his acting in this video. He'd have made a brilliant children's tv presenter

Hi
I thought for ages that he was singing "I eat what you excrete!". I double checked the lyrics and I'm very glad to say your version is correct. lol!
There should be an Oscar award for best actor in music video. John Lydon would win him every year.

No matter what the line up is, with John at the helm they are one of the best bands ever to frequent this earth.
Just saw this on TOTP 90. Still awesome 31 years on :)
Me too, now on my 8th listen
Same here, totp brought me here. I remember this track but was to young to understand then
