sorry it looks like my caption file didn't get uploaded, so I'm working on editing the auto generated captions now! will have correct captions up soon! edit: captions have been fixed and YES I AM EXCITED TO WATCH EPISODE 3 TONIGHT, let me know what you think!!
All da Ladies Luv Leo Heroes of Olympus books, they are even better than Percy Jackson, the biggest reason for reading is you get more of Percy and Annabeth as a couple.
Yeahh that's like the same for me! My friend had been begging me to read the books for ages, and I finally decided to, a month ago, after I saw Mikaila's Percy Jackson shorts 😄
Same, I wanted for a long time to read the book but never gave time for them but now I watch the series with someone who already know the books and explain me stuff while we watch the series
Percy saying that he is Sally Jackson's son is just… *chef's kiss* Also, I would love to watch all your reactions to this series as it comes out, even if they're a week or so late. ;)
I did love that line, but I didn’t like that it was paired with him basically being willing to let the world be destroyed just to spite Poseidon. That’s nowhere NEAR Percy’s character. I would’ve liked to see it implemented in a different way.
@@ryern6350 respectfully disagree. I get that Percy is very critical of Poseidon (rightfully so) but his strong moral compass has always been a major part of his character, to the point that Athena calls it his fatal flaw. When he’s given the quest in the first book he doesn’t feel up to it. He’s scared and nervous because he’s had little formal training, but he accepts it anyway because it’s the right thing to do. He has the added personal motive of rescuing his mom, but she wasn’t the sole reason he went on the quest (which is why he left her behind in the book).
I only watched the show yesterday, I was too afraid it would be ruined but I was very happy with it. And I get why some things have to be watered down (medusa and his step dad mostly) but at least they still kept the story.
The only problem I have is Gabe not being “Umbridge enough” so to speak, but yeah that’s the only problem I have with the series. I think the movies did Gabe really well, that’s one of the things that they excelled on, but yeah love the series can’t wait for the fourth episode, which is premiering next year. 😢
So i read Percy Jackson in middle school (graduated in 2017) … Honestly I don’t remember a TON of the details, but there has been so many times where I see a set or pick up on what characters are talking about and i’m like “OOOHHH I KNOW THIS” “WAIT IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS?” “WOW THEY’RE DOING SO GOOD!” as a person who hasn’t read the books in 10 years.. i am absolutely LOVING THE SERIES… I CANNOT WAIT until season 3 for Nico!!!!
So far, as a long-time book fan, I am very happy with the adaptation so far. My dislikes were: 1) The insane info/lore dump from Sally in episode 1. Could have been done better. 2) MINOR SPOILER FOR NON-READERS = I didn't personally enjoy the sarcastic, confrontational side of Sally towards Gabe. I had so much respect for Sally in the books because she swallowed her emotions and pride in a toxic relationship for the sake of her son. She needed Gabe's stench to hide Percy's godly scent from monsters. By being the way she is in episode 1 towards Gabe, it felt like she was risking the "stability" of that relationship and, by proxy, the safety of Percy. If Gabe left her due to her strong personality, she would lose the mask for Percy's half-blood scent. If Gabe hurt her in retaliation, Percy would inadvertently use his powers in defense of his mother, attracting monsters to him. I wish she was more reserved. It made the end of book 1 and the Medusa head moment so much more impactful and satisfying. Sometimes the hardest battles are fought in silence
My interpretation of that scene where Sally stands up to Gabe was that it was an exception; a change of pace. She knows Percy is going to summer camp, so it no longer matters if their relationship is stable.
These were my exact feelings! Don't get me wrong, Sally being more confident can be a good thing in these modern times for women, but it also removes the sacrifice of being with Gabe in the first place. I don't think Gabe would leave her because of her strong personality, but it does make the dynamics different from the book, and not necessarily for the better. Regardless, that was my only critique of the first episode, along with the exposition dump, but I blame the show's run time for that. I wonder if they're going to change the ending of Gabe with Medusa for that reason. We'll have to wait and see.
EXACTLY what I was saying, I don't at all understand the backlash I've seen for this opinion, ppl saying "oh Gabe doesn't have to do this and this to be abusive, Sally doesn't have to act like this and this to be a victim to it" but like- that's what makes you so angry! In the books, just the image of Sally's interaction with Gabe, retreating to Percy's room after her long shift at work, giving him blue food and talking about Montauk shows you so much about her character without even Percy himself having to say anything.
Just finished the 3rd episode and despite the pacing issues (probably my biggest gripe with the show) I really love the character work the series is doing so far, even with the (minor) story changes. I think Rick and the other writers are adding more emotional weight to the fact that the demigods often feel neglected by their parents. That additional weight is going to have massive payoff by the end of the season, particularly for the non-book readers who don't know what's coming. I'm a newer adult fan myself but I am absolutely loving this series even without the nostalgic attachment. I also recently went back to school to study creative writing and I think this show is a great example to work off of when it comes to learning how to make a good adaptation. I've done a tiny bit of book to screen stuff and one of the things you learn almost immediately after trying it out yourself is that you have to consider what should stay the same and what _needs_ to be changed to make the jump to the new medium work effectively. The show is doing a great job of balancing out both sides of the adaptation equation imo
I was feeling like something about the episodes were a bit off to me, but I couldn't explain exactly what. Now that you mentioned pacing issues, I think you just enlightened me.
My only gripe with the show is that Percy slaying his math teacher went by very quickly and wasn’t in front of anyone which added to his questioning his sanity
When this dropped, me and my friend watched it, 10/10 I kept pointing out things that were verbatim from the books and generally just screaming at all the things that were true to the book 4:08 also the bar was in the deepest depths of Tartarus after watching the movies
I think your perspective as a new fan of the books is particularly great because youre able to address the changes they made without the nostalgia bias we have!! Great job!
I was so hoping that they put the "You drool when you sleep" line and THEY DID I'm so happy This show is great, the small changes surprised me a bit but they were a good addition I think
I’ve heard a lot of opinions about the whole “Gabe” thing. People think that it’s actually not bad and still represented well but in a different way. (Their opinion, I kind of agree but I couldn’t tell you more) Yeah I started reading in August and have read all three series this year but I act like I’ve had it in my life for forever.
Totally! 👏🏼 I saw someone describe it as representing the mask that abusers can put on and representing more of the emotional/economic abuse which I definitely agree with and think they did a good job of that! I think my concern is mostly that the tone almost feels comedic in his scenes, like that they chose stylistically to make him seem more silly so it might come off to audiences who don’t know the story that he’s supposed to be just funny and harmless, but I think the emotional weight that the situation needs to be treated with will come at the end of the season! omg sorry that was long haha I just love discussing this show 😂 so happy to hear there’s other fans who read it for the first time this year!!
I get what you're saying, but I feel like that should be explored in a different show, where you're centered on the abuser and his victime. Here, we get one scene of Gabe in the first episode, and maybe a flashback in the last one, and the punishment of Gabe will be death by Medusa's glare. You NEED a frontal and hard scene to justify that kind of fate, otherwise, it's Sally that will pass for the bad guy ˆˆ'
same, except I read it earlier this year. I started it in april 2023, since I was bored, and borrowed it on my reading app libby. i read harry potter just a few hours after new years and finished it in march 2023 or smth cause I wasn’t consistent. honestly i remember the first screenshot I ever took of a page was when annabeth told percy about how his adhd actually helped him.
@@krankarvolund7771 Yeah I was wondering if they'll even have Gabe be petrified at the end, cus if this guy was killed as he's characterized now it would feel pretty extreme. He's definitely an asshole but doesn't seem outwardly abusive from what we've seen. Maybe they'll just have Sally break up with him at the end, or maybe they'll be a bit more overt with his characterization as a villain by the end. I trust they'll do it right tho and not let Sally be perceived as the bad guy.
Overall, I loved the new TV show, but there were somethings that I didn't like: The pacing was off Annabeth was not shown enough Chiron was too professional and not casual and laid back like I imagined Grover was too confidant The episodes were too short This show is really great and all of my criticisms are really just nitpicks. I hope this show go to season 3 at least because that is my favorite of the series. Look forward to more of your reactions
personally i thought the pacing was perfect, but a lot of people agree with you. it’s face paced, and as someone with a short attention span, it’s perfect for me. but i 100% get that different people have different pacing speeds that seem better. the only nitpick i have is gabe seeming sane lol! 💙
I read the books when I was 13. Now I'm 23 and I'm so happy to dive into the universe of PJ once again. Michaela, I completely agree with you, the show is made with real care of the story and its interpretation ❤😭
Please more episode reactions! I need to relive every second with my people haha but yes I’m adoring this show mostly for the characters and the perfect cast who *understand* the characters! Like even out of character, the actors are so good and I’m soaking up every cast interview because they fit so well. I’m excited to see the kids continue to grow as actors on the show where they can make more creative and executive decisions once they are truly comfortable in their roles because they have it! And I think it shows with the adults because the acting choices they are making are soooo perfect like Sally Jackson standing ten toes down for Percy at all times even against Percy himself is just amazing understanding of who Sally is. Honestly this show could be put together with the budget of a 5th grade play for the background and CGI I would still love it because of the actors, so really as long as that continues, I’m all in!
My only complaint is that in the book Chiron is hoping Percy is not poseidons son (although he heavily suspects it) and his claiming has more of a solemn tone to it, which I would have preferred to see. Chiron seems more emphatic in the show and the heroic music blah blah blah, just didn’t feel quite right because now he know what Percy will have to go through
I read Percy Jackson and Heroes of Oympus for the first time this year as well and wished i read these growing up. I love the characters so much and It's nice to see an adaption that is more true to the books
I 100% agree, the only gripe I had was that the step-dad wasn't as big of a human garbage that I remember him being, I also loved every scene Sally Jackson was in. She was the perfect mom and Ioved her, I forgot how much I loved her in the books
Absolutely agree on the pen-line. It’s just too relatable. I’m currently listening to the audiobook for the first time and I also feel like Percy can still be a bit more witty with his comebacks. I feel like he often just has no reaction instead.
As someone who read Percy Jackson already at the age of 9 (and later also read all the other series that Rick wrote), first of all I want to say that he is without a doubt my favorite author, and I could really talk about the books for hours but I'll get to the point. I have to admit that at first I didn't connect with the series, and I had a lot of criticism about the casting of the actors, or parts of the plot that appeared in the book but not in the series, but then as the episodes progressed and even when I compared it to the movies, I really fell in love with the series itself, and Walker Scovel is the perfect Percy Jackson ! I will always prefer the books over everything else because I really grew up on them, but I am relatively very happy with the series and Rick really listened to the fans of the books. I personally would really love five seasons... (sorry that the English is not written so well, I don't speak English as a native language)
In response to what you have to say about luke (6:20) coming from someone who read the books in high school (about 4 years ago): Luke's was the one casting that I was unhappy with because SPOILER ALERT he is supposed to come off as this fun, sweet, polite, all-around great guy, because that makes the betrayal at the end hurt that much more. But with actor that they chose, you just don't get that feeling. When I was watching this episode with my younger brother and Luke came on screen, he immediately asked me if he was a bully. That is not the vibe we're supposed to get from Luke. That's just my opinion.
Look at first I was also unsure about the casting but after a few scenes with him, I got that charming "I can make everyone blush if I want to" vibe that Luke from the first book has. And well, your little brother was supposed to firstly think, that Luke is a bully, bc Percy thinks so too. And a scarred face isn't particularly often seen on a good guy, which you know, holds true to Luke for quite some time. As soon as he turned the charme on, book Luke is notorious for, I was happy. And I grew up with those books and reread them every year at least ones, for the past six years, so my opinions on Percy Jackson are damn strong and based in a long journey with the books (unfortunately also with the movies, if you can call them that). But as you said: Just my opinion.
Yes please more reactions. I came to the fandom as a late teen so I don't have as much nostalgia as others, but I do so love it and am enjoying your take of things.
She really hits the nail on the head with how those of us who grew up reading it were really affected by the books. I was undiagnosed ADHD until 17 and dyslexia until this year (20, no one suspected anything because I *seemed* to read so easily. Even i didn’t know how much I was struggling for years. I had a bad concussion and the symptoms of dyslexia, leading to a diagnosis). I also have a heart condition that always alienated me. I used books to escape, and in an especially hard time in my childhood, I found Percy Jackson. I genuinely think these books shaped who I am today.
"... The bar was in the underworld" 😂😂 I honestly loved the movies when I watched it before reading the book. Now that I've read it, it's making me upset everytime I remember it 😂 lol
I haven't watched this yet and I was waiting for a sneak peek from you before I did. I was in my 20's working with school age kids when I read it and dang, we all read it aloud and had the best time laughing and experiencing it together. Just from this clip, when Sally is telling Percy he isn't broken, as a mom now, I cried. This series is going to be good, especially if that really was Pimento as Dionysus.
I totally agree about gabe I don’t think they could make gabe as mean as they want to and keep the show pg tho because of how awful gabe was because those movies were barely pg
I actually loved that they changed Luke's appearance. Because I let my guard down, and was like, "Wow, this random camper is so nice," only for his name to blindside me.
I first read Percy Jackson when I was a kid, and I have loved this new interpretation of It , I cried when I watched the first episode 😅, Ive never experienced so much joy while watching some thing! the way they made Luke was so good, but not just him,all of the characters are amazing. It feels so nice to finally see my childhood characters being made into great movie versions, love your vids Mikaila, can't wait for you to watch the next one!
Your Percy Jackson shorts were actually my very first exposure to the series. Thank you for all your hard work on your content & all the laughs over the months! 😄 P.S. Patiently waiting for Mikaila to start a ko-fi account or Patreon or something so I can finally tip her.
I read the books as a kid growing up and to be watching the show as an adult now is absolutely surreal. I like a lot of what we’ve seen so far and think it certainly captures that spirit of the books the “movies” never did, but I’m having a hard time with the pacing. There are moments that feel really rushed and others that seem unnecessary or slow. It feels like someone who has never read the book would get whiplash watching because even I was getting a bit dizzy.
What's kinda annoying now is people arguing whats canon now. Which is weird because this isn't the first book to screen adaptation. Both can exist without people saying one is real and not the other.
I first read these books when I was like 9; I hadn’t been diagnosed w autism yet so I didn’t even know why I felt so different from everyone around me. The line where sally says “you are not broken” has made me cry each of the three times that I’ve watched it, because it is exactly why PJO was so important to me. PJO meant I wasn’t broken. PJO meant little 9-year-old me could believe that maybe I was capable of something amazing and being weird was just a side effect
I want to ask, Have you read Demigods files? It's a 2-3 short side stories that are perfect to read between PJO and Heroes of Olympus. One of them is Luke's dairy set at the time when he and Thalia were on the run before finding Annabeth. If you love Luke's character(like I do), you'll enjoy reading it and It'll certainly help understanding his process of thinking more)
My mom actually got me into the Percy Jackson series. She's a teacher and her students picked the first book one year to read. At 50 yo she fell in love with the series and suggested it to me. Which I think really cements the idea that the books work for all ages.
I binge read all 5 pjo books in the last week and the show thus far is near IMMACULATE A faithful adaptation that is artistically unique. My only gripe is a minor one- that being Medusa being a prettyfied white woman with a hat instead of the more logical old crone in a burka from the book, and the general de-aging of the so far 3 old lady characters that have appeared. Otherwise just about everything is gorgeous and sincerely crafted. Interestingly, all the scenes featuring heavy uses of cgi (the furies, the minotaur, the dryad) have been incredibly slow and still in terms of movement of any kind- even though three of these such scenes have been action scenes. It makes me wonder what materials they were working with for the cgi and the constraints
I already had to pause it when the opening started verbatim like the book. I just knew it was going to be great! 😍 It was indeed very nostalgic, since I read the books in middle school (later series in high school) and I’m 26 now. Though I agree that Gabe was more a pathetic Gabe than a menacing, clearly abusive Gabe, all the rest is exactly how I imagined them. I can really see why Annabeth calls Percy Seaweed brain this time. All I can say is, thank you uncle Rick!!
I prefer the pen 🖊️ design in the movie 🎥 I know that tv show pen is more book accurate. But think about it from a merchandising point of view, people would want to buy tokens and memorabilia to be a part of their favorite fandom. They could have done a cool visual media design pen. Something I would want to buy and put on my shelf. As my Percy Jackson token. It’s just a basic pen nothing special about it
I mean, it's the point of the pen ˆˆ Especially in a later scene, he will have to put back the cap on the hilt of the sword to write, a thing he never thought about XD I get the merchandising argument, but like... between the Minotaur's horn, the sword itself (Riptide?), and of course the T-shirts and necklaces with beads, I think we've got more than our faire share of merchandising XD
I always liked that it was just a pen. It fit in with how the mist made everything completely mundane. And, honestly, of all the reasons to make changes to the story - merchandising is not the one I'd support. There's already going to be a million options for merchandizing; Riptide can be miniaturized to be sold in sword form, alongside other weapons like backbiter, if need be. The Helm of Darkness, the Master Bolt, the Trident, Camp Halfblood beads and shirts, all the monsters as mythomagic figurines, heck mythomagic cards, drachma, stickers advertising Hermes Delivery Service, etc. And that's just from book 1.
Every single episode of this show has made me teary-eyed almost constantly. I can't believe that we got something this faithful that also somehow elevates the story to new heights. Reading this series as a kid sparked my love for Greek Mythology and to see the story come to life like this is unimaginably wonderful, especially after suffering through the movies.
Girl, im in the same boat with you. I ALSO read the books this year around june cuz my sister was a die-hard fan of percy jackson and wanted me to be one too. Her plan was successful. I absolutely love this remake sooooo much and have actually been waiting for you to release this video on your opinion and I'm happy you love it as much as me PERCY JACKSON LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO 🗡️🔱🌊
I'm really loving the series so far. I know they didn't do everything exactly like the book but I don't really mind - they kept the heart of the story and characters. The cast is awesome, and I was stunned at how much Camp Half Blood resembles what I imagined when reading the books. I'm excited to keep watching 😁
Sigh… This series is a mixed bag for me. The main characters are very well done and its nice they got the heart of the chracters right. The story so far feels like theyre telling too much rather than showing. Too much expositional dialogue on how stuff works on loses me very quickly, and it feels like they didnt have enough budget to show the cool camp stuff. My bar for Disney shows has become pretty low and this show seems at the very least to be watchable.
same feeling! As someone who never read the books, I'd like to be shown that Annabeth is the best warrior and leader in camp 'cause she's so tiny and that is a lofty claim. Kinda unbelievable honestly. And yeah, it felt like everybody was waiting around to exposition dump, and somehow EVERYBODY is paying attention to Percy's every word at all times. When he said "mom" at the museum it was just one word and he said it kinda loudly but he wasn't shouting it over and over. And yet, that one single word prompted the NPC's around him to act: Mrs. Dodds: "Percy, contain yourself" The bully: "Percy's SpEcIaL" Mr Brunner: "Percy, I have a quest item for you" .....hehehe....
@@JJ_6036in the books she isn’t the best warrior at camp they introduced that as a girl boss thing, she defs is the smartest and is a good warrior don’t get me wrong
Finally someone said it. I understand that fans are happy to get something this close to their book, but it supposed to bea beautiful colorful magical fantasy world of Greek gods and in the adaptation it feels just like eh, law budget tv series. Or they just forgot to hire designers...
I am on the fourth book ( I started this month too.) I am glad to see different perspectives of the book and series. (I haven't watched the movies yet.) Glad Percy Jackson introduced me to you.
Yeah, I honestly love how well they portrayed Percy, as someone with adhd, a lot of the lines they gave him had me thinking “thank you so much.” I’m glad that he voices the feelings of so many of us who are different or can’t easily fit in.
First thing, just want to say I honestly prefer that you publish your videos one week after the episodes came out. First, don't overwork yourself of course, and second, it gives me time to watch the episodes on my own without getting spoiled XD Personally I would have two complaints, a very minor one on the SFX, I feel like Chiron is slightly off, like his horse body is too big for his human half, so he looks like a weird chimera stitched together, not an actual monster like the Minotaur or Grover. But it's very minor, and really in a few scenes where he's shot from far aside, other than that it works fine ˆˆ Second, from an adaptation, I don't like the way they go with Gabe, as you said he feel sanitized, and I get that they probably did it to up Sally's character which is a very good thing in my books but I have two problems with it. First, if Sally is a strong independant woman who yells on her abusive husband, it gives her strength, but also diminish the sacrifice she made that we learn at the end, staying with an abusive smelly husband to keep Percy hidden from monsters. Second, if Gabe is not as abusive as in the book, he doesn't deserve his fate anymore. I've already felt weird in the books that she killed Gabe and all his Poker friends, killing only Gabe is probably one of the rare good choices of the movie. But if you change the couple dynamics from "abusive husband and helpless wife" to "dysfunctionnal relationship with litte abuse", well I don't support the end method to be "kill the husband" ˆˆ' Wow, I've written a novel about two negative points while I really enjoyed this show XD
Hey! I agree with most your points but after rereading the book today I wanted to lyk that Sally only kills Gabe in the book and not his friends. She reports him missing to police and then sells a piece to a soho gallery titled “The Poker Player”. Just the one ugly neorealism sculpture of Gabe, so you dont have to worry about his friends (one of which was relatively nice)!
I’M SO GLAD SOMEONE POINTED OUT THE CHIRON ISSUE!! LIKE WHY THE FUCK IS HE THAT TALL WHAT THE HELL IT’S NOT LIKE A CENTAUR IS A CREATURE THAT IS RARELY SEEN IN FILM JESUS CHRIST Ok screaming over. I do really agree with the Gabe point though. In fact, two of the best parts of the movie, in my opinion, were Chiron’s (general, obviously not fantastic but general) accuracy, and how terrifying and rage-inducing Gabe was on sight, and how he was disgusting to both Percy and Sally. It made the reveal of Sally’s reasoning MUCH more impactful, and as a casual fan, I was surprised by how angry I was that that whole section was watered down.
They did it right and it shows because Uncle Rick was actually on the scriptwriting team this time! So happy about it being almost a complete 180 in terms of receiving input and feedback from the original author!
As someone whose childhood was PJO and the Percy Jackson fandom, watching this adaptation is a genuinely life-changing experience for me. Not only do we finally have a tv show, but we have THIS tv show. I couldn't ask for better portrayals of the characters, and I love that I get to experience all this with you. My little sister and I love watching your videos together (she wants to note that Luke's scar was very well-done).
I read the lightning thief for the first time when I was twelve (I am 23 now) and I think the show is a perfect adaptation so far. Exhibit A f this being that they revealed hi parentage so well in the show that I totally forgot that that's not how it happened in the book (honestly, I like how the show did it better). Ithink you're right in saying that they are taking care to make the show accessible to people who aren't familiar with the source material, but still pleasing to the people who do. I love it so much already! ALSO I TOTALLY MISSED UNCLE RICK IN THE BACKGROUND! THAT'S SO COOL!!!! I agree that Gabe seems a bit watered down, but hopefully that changes later.
absolutely love hearing from long term fans, that must be such an emotional experience to finally get to see a book accurate adaptation after all these years!! 🥹
The series so far is hitting the important points. Percy is so good. He hates bullies, whether they target him or not. He stands up to all bullies, even when they're gods. Luke is the big brother to Percy, showing empathy towards Sally's fate and helping Percy survive being a demigod. Sally was excellent. Many of the minor characters have been handled quite well. Right now, I only have issues with one of the characters, Grover. Grover snitching on Percy was way off base. Grover may have been meek in PJO, but he never sold-out Percy.
Right before the show came out, my friend and I were talking about adaptations (specifically PJO but also others) and I told her that while nothing about the PJO movie made it a good adaptation, the "this is a pen" line will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Sally’s line before she disappears where she tells Percy “you are singular” is what broke me, cuz as an adhd adult who got diagnosed as a kid but didn’t fully understand adhd until I was an adult, I feel like my identity got splintered into the various things I saw in myself. I was a shy bookworm, now I’m not. I’m an artist and a writer but I can’t seem to finish anything I start. My adhd influences everything I do, everything I think and feel, every choice I make, so what if I’m nothing more than my disorder? Then Sally said “You are singular” and it clicked with something in my mind. I am not a byproduct of mental illness, I am not just what I manage to create, I am a person with worth, and I may be made up of a bunch of different interests and experiences but there’s no need to have one of those define me. I can pull all those influences together in the shape of a human being who has intrinsic value in her existence.
I love seeing you react to the books, (the forbidden movie) or the shows and jumping into the series cause as someone who has just started reading them (like you) it’s really comforting to know you can join the family/community at any time. (also I just want to thank u again cause the main reason I started the books was because of your ‘unhinged Percy Jackson scenes” videos and they have really been amazing) also a little off topic but the spoiler warning was very much appreciated I have finished the first book so I didn’t need it but exploring the fandom while also being aware of spoilers is a hard thing to do, thx so much!!
I did grew up with Percy Jackson's books and he is engrained in my core , everything felt so amazing and in the feels , the way they all did a great job I wanted to cry . The deeper emphasis in Sally and Percy felt specially great, the way he pray to her with the candle, the way he and Grover interacted , the way you could tell from the beginning Percy's fatal flaw and Annabeth's and how those flaws are at play here , the guilt Grover has for Thalia , how important Thalia is , the way the gods aren't the best parents , and the restlessness of Luke's . 🥺
I have read and re read this series so many times, and so far this adaptation is A+. Sure not everyone looks exactly like I fist imagined, but they certainly embody who I imagined them to which is the important things.
I’m in the same boat as you, I just recently joined the fandom like a few months ago but I reread the books recently - I watched the movies and yk how they are 😭 but it’s so nice watching and feeling that satisfaction like when we got the “you drool when you sleep” and Mr. D calling Percy “Peter Johnson”🤩 this tv show has sooo much potential and I CANNOT wait to watch the whole thing
I read the books when i was 13, eight years ago, and i've read the Lightning Thief about 6 times, i think. This series is. Everything. I am so so so emotional. I've already watched the episodes three times and i'm planning to rewatch them with my brothers in two days so. It's just gorgeous. And funny. I am so happy this is happening.
I'm also new the fandom and read the books this year. I actually discovered Percy through the movies 😅 I love Logan... now after reading the source material I see how the movies sucked. But they did introduce me to this while shebang so I still love them anyway
Yes please watch the show along with us! I literally read the first book for the first time yesterday and I loved how I could watch the show right after! It’s doing great justice to the books so far.

FUN FACT: here in Brasil we also references to a older person we apreciate as uncle/aunt. Like a parent of a friend. We spontaneity calling him Uncle Rick (Tio Rick, in portuguese). He noticed that, and address his knowledge of it in his blog, and people in US start calling it too. That's back in the time I start reading the books a decade ago.
would LOVE more episode reactions. this show is actually the best thing ever as a neurodivergent kid who grew up and still adores percy jackson and the entire universe 🫶
I grew up with the books and seeing this series and hearing other reviewers, and you talk about how accurate it is, inspired me to go back and reread the first book it’s like discovering of my favorite things
I picked up the first two Percy Jackson books at a huge book fair we have in my city. They were unknown back then, so me and my sister, who always loved mythology and saw a sweet promotion, got both. It was... very life changing? In every opportunity after that we took turns asking the new releases on special occasions as gifts (bdays, christmas etc). It was around the same era when whatsapp and tumblr were starting, and in both platforms I came in contact with the fandom. My best friends online for what, 10 years now? Almost 11? Are all from the PJO fandom. So it's an understatement to say that it's been magical for us to go back to this universe together, discuss the episodes when they come out, and relive those sweet moments we've had as kids. The PJ fandom has always been loyal, vocal and percystent (that's how we call ourselves in my country 😅), because multiple times every year people made campaigns to try and make a reboot happen somehow, by a company that cared. No one ever gave up on it. So it's amazing to have this now, a show made with so much thought, care and love by everyone involved. I feel happy as a fan and happy for the fandom bc everyone deserves it so much, and I also feel happy for those who are not familiar with it at all that are getting to know the magical world that changed my life and helped build my character. I probably took too long with this comment, but it was all to say that I'm having a super fun time watching with my sister as well as watching other ppl watching it 😂 it's been great ❤❤
I decided to read the book before seeing the episodes that were like the chapter, for example i read until Percy meeting Hades for guarantee Medusa plot. And is wild! I wanted to end because the feeling or rush is so good. I have been a "yeah i know some parts of Percy Jackson" thing, but actually stopping and appreciate is some different of a feeling. This is why this show is already better than the film, it made me curious to know better.
I know a lot of people don't love the shows but I think the series was genuinely pretty good! Not perfect, a bit strange, but strange in a way that brings me a LOT of joy. I think if I had been there when the books came out [I also just picked it up at the beginning of this year] I might have been a bit more upset, but this is a truly faithful adaptation that I absolutely adore.
I read somewhere that Rick was worried about Gabe being genuinely triggering. Something about how it's harder to see abuse adapted vs visualizing it yourself
oh that makes sense! and knowing Rick was involved in the show and approved the Gabe portrayal makes me trust that the direction they took with that character had good intentions behind it!
How does it feel to have this long time love for the series to finally see it faithfully and lovingly adapted? It's my life now- my tired heart beats stronger for the revival of this fandom. I'm glad you're on the journey with us!
3:12 I vividly remember the moment in 7th grade when I was reading the first book, when Luke described ADHD as our battle instincts as demigods and not just as some disorder that make it harder to do things. I was in the office (for a conflict resolution with some annoying ass kid) and I, having been diagnosed with ADHD and feeling so out of place, almost broke down immediately. I just felt so included and happy for once. So, thanks uncle Rick, for basically saving my life.
I think every episode so far has been better than the last and I just hope it continues. Episode 7 is the one I think will be the best. Most of that episode will probably be the underworld and then maybe even Ares at the very end. That will be such an epic episode.
as an autistic person who was only recently diagnosed (im a teenager) the line “i know im weird, believe me, i get it. but im afraid something may be really broken” hit a little too close to home. this series will forever have a place in my heart for telling me im not broken, and for showing the strength in difference
I grew up with the books - didn't realize Chalice of the Gods came out sometime within the last couple of years but I absolutely love the show. Some minor things I had an issue with like not enough Annabeth involvement in the second ep but I think I know what they're going for. For me, Percy and Annabeth's relationship is like one of my absolute favorite things about the book so I just wanted to see more. I haven't seen ep 3 yet but excited to watch it! I think they did a great job with everything and camp half blood is exactly as I imagined it to be. Some things felt a little rushed but I think that's about normal given we only have 8 eps for this.
I first read Percy Jackson books when I was around 15, now I’m in my early 20s, so I’m a really bitter person (plus a perfectionist)😂 Reading these books was an awesome experience and I genuinely LOVE these books and its characters, Percy being my favourite of all. So of course I am biased towards the series because of that! I would say, that I personally didn’t really like the first episode of the Disney series - for me the tone jumped all over the place and Percy wasn’t as sassy as he should have been. I felt like script-writers changed roles: they gave Percy’s sassy character to Sally, Sally’s cautious and silent behaviour to Percy and Gabe is just… not really that disgusting and awful. Also I personally would say that they made the goodbyes and Minotaur fighting scenes way too long where they should have been much more fast, because the heroes are being chased. I didn’t feel it. BUT! I understand that adapting such a book as Percy’s is REALLY hard, because in the book a lot of Percy’s sassiness we see out of the actual scenes (like in his head, otherwise he’d be dead) and all the actors were really great considering even their age, I just think script could’ve been better. But I enjoyed for the most part the second episode (though some jokes were more out of place for me than funny), the tone there tried more to be like Percy’s and not overly dramatic like it was in the first episode, and something tells me that series will become better in the next episodes, when the awkward beginning is over with and forgotten (beginnings are always awkward). Otherwise the casting is great for almost everybody, and the camp is close to what I’ve imagined. Oh, and I really liked Percy at the end of the second episode when he talked to Chiron and Mr.D - that was Percy I know from the books. Thanks Mikaila for the review! All have great holidays! :)
i really think they should have made the first ep twice as long or made it 2 eps. The Mrs. Dodds fight was *so* fast (and also in a huge crowd of people?) and so little time was spent so many things happening. Prob would have fixed all that exposition dumping that happened too. Enjoyed ep 2 much better
Having not read the books or seen the films, I decided to watch the show as an experiment (and not at all because I'm too lazy to read the books, nope...shut up). I have really enjoyed the first couple of episodes. More than anything else, there's a certain charm to it all, plus I really enjoyed the maturity of the storytelling. Annabeth's "I don't give a monkey's left nut what anyone thinks" attitude is hilarious. I was a bit bemused by Percy's parentage. It makes me wonder whether his mother thought that she boinked Zeus (hey, the odds are good) and named her son Perseus accordingly. It's a nice red herring by the author.
I read the books when I was around 13-14 and I'm so happy about this show. I didn't even like the Peter Johnson movies when I was kid so this is like my dream come true!
sorry it looks like my caption file didn't get uploaded, so I'm working on editing the auto generated captions now! will have correct captions up soon! edit: captions have been fixed and YES I AM EXCITED TO WATCH EPISODE 3 TONIGHT, let me know what you think!!
EPISODE 3 DROPPED LETS GOOO
@@comeheremafuyu-chan I watched it literally 1 minute or just seconds after it came out lol
And I love the Zuko atla reference!😂
EP 3 JUST DROPPED!!!
All da Ladies Luv Leo
Heroes of Olympus books, they are even better than Percy Jackson, the biggest reason for reading is you get more of Percy and Annabeth as a couple.
Dionysus pretending to be Percy’s father was hilarious. Best comedy moment so far in my opinion.
And it introduced the lore that Gods use demigods to get their shit done. Absolute cinematic masterpiece!
That was a nice add.
@@ShamaD274 you are dead on.
Right?? It made me laugh so much 😂
The Jesus bit as well, even made my brother laugh
You really joined the fandom at the perfect time, just in time for this amazing adaptation
I’m so happy to be here!! 🥹🔱
Yeahh that's like the same for me! My friend had been begging me to read the books for ages, and I finally decided to, a month ago, after I saw Mikaila's Percy Jackson shorts 😄
I joined at the same time as her haha it's perfect
Same, I wanted for a long time to read the book but never gave time for them but now I watch the series with someone who already know the books and explain me stuff while we watch the series
@@Nily8233Same
Annabeth is so blunt on everything and I adore it.
she is SO Annabeth I love her so much!! I almost forgot that early series Annabeth was just like that haha I’m so excited to see her growth!
@thewarrior130 She's always been like that at the beginning. She was always kinda cold to Percy.
@thewarrior130 she only really became nicer late Ron in the books so I think it's accurate
@thewarrior130 idk if I'm crazy but the way she just stands there staring makes her look lost, rather than cold.
@@XionXIV407I just read the first book again 2 days ago and she is definitely not as cold in the books lol
Percy saying that he is Sally Jackson's son is just… *chef's kiss*
Also, I would love to watch all your reactions to this series as it comes out, even if they're a week or so late. ;)
I did love that line, but I didn’t like that it was paired with him basically being willing to let the world be destroyed just to spite Poseidon. That’s nowhere NEAR Percy’s character. I would’ve liked to see it implemented in a different way.
@@coreyklaustermeier5692 while its not in line with current Percy, I feel like Percy in the first book likely could've had a similar response
Lil off topic but Sally Jackson look just like I thought!
I loved that scene, that was exactly how Percy was in the book.
I grew up with the books and this is the adaptation we've all been waiting for. I grew up feeling weird and the books just meant the world to me.
same, i read them for the first time when i was 8 and my ‘pjo phase’ hasn’t ended since
Hyperfixations don't disappear, they just retreat into the corners of your mind until this happens
I can't describe how I love this show (:
OMG, Nico is the №1 crush
Also Thalia don't forget her
And Bianca de Angelo she is a very nice character even though she has a very minor appearance but quite important.😊
So the whole time you were captain America: "I understood that reference!" 😂😂😂
@@arkaganguly4734don't let Bianca play with robots
So far, as a long-time book fan, I am very happy with the adaptation so far.
My dislikes were:
1) The insane info/lore dump from Sally in episode 1.
I feel like Sally standing up to Gabe at the end was a major character development but she was directly rude to him
EXACTLY what I was saying, I don't at all understand the backlash I've seen for this opinion, ppl saying "oh Gabe doesn't have to do this and this to be abusive, Sally doesn't have to act like this and this to be a victim to it" but like- that's what makes you so angry!
In the books, just the image of Sally's interaction with Gabe, retreating to Percy's room after her long shift at work, giving him blue food and talking about Montauk shows you so much about her character without even Percy himself having to say anything.
Yes. Just yes. I really hope we'll see that side of their relationship later on.
Absolutely love this analysis!! 👏🏼👏🏼
When this dropped, me and my friend watched it, 10/10 I kept pointing out things that were verbatim from the books and generally just screaming at all the things that were true to the book
4:08 also the bar was in the deepest depths of Tartarus after watching the movies
I think your perspective as a new fan of the books is particularly great because youre able to address the changes they made without the nostalgia bias we have!! Great job!
I personally think Gabe being chill is to elude to the fact that not all abuse is that visible
I was so hoping that they put the "You drool when you sleep" line and THEY DID I'm so happy
This show is great, the small changes surprised me a bit but they were a good addition I think
That moment when Luke looks like book Percy and Percy looks like book Luke.
I’ve heard a lot of opinions about the whole “Gabe” thing. People think that it’s actually not bad and still represented well but in a different way. (Their opinion, I kind of agree but I couldn’t tell you more)
Yeah I started reading in August and have read all three series this year but I act like I’ve had it in my life for forever.
@magicbymikaila I only started this year too. I'm in the middle of reading the third one currently.
Overall, I loved the new TV show, but there were somethings that I didn't like:
The pacing was off
Annabeth was not shown enough
Chiron was too professional and not casual and laid back like I imagined
Grover was too confidant
The episodes were too short
This show is really great and all of my criticisms are really just nitpicks. I hope this show go to season 3 at least because that is my favorite of the series. Look forward to more of your reactions
same the pacing seems a little fast or off somehow
Agreed, they kinda neutered Chiron’s personality
Well, episode 3 finally has decent pacing.
personally i thought the pacing was perfect, but a lot of people agree with you. it’s face paced, and as someone with a short attention span, it’s perfect for me. but i 100% get that different people have different pacing speeds that seem better. the only nitpick i have is gabe seeming sane lol! 💙
This is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe they will hit their stride by the third season.
I read the books when I was 13. Now I'm 23 and I'm so happy to dive into the universe of PJ once again. Michaela, I completely agree with you, the show is made with real care of the story and its interpretation ❤😭
Gabe was the major number 1 thing that bothered me, out of a list of many. I enjoy the show so far though.
There are so many new fans from the show who LOVE Luke! It feels great. Also I will ALWAYS cry during the minotaur scene.
I’ve overall really liked the show as an adaption, and loved it as a show, it’s pretty awesome.❤ Walker is a phenomenal actor.
I will never get over her speech to him before she get grabbed by the minataur and her “Hold fast Perseus” ugh i can't
You know it's a good day when Mikaila posts!
"... The bar was in the underworld" 😂😂
I honestly loved the movies when I watched it before reading the book.

If you love Luke's character(like I do), you'll enjoy reading it and It'll certainly help understanding his process of thinking more)
That’s from demigod diaries but yeah
My mom actually got me into the Percy Jackson series. She's a teacher and her students picked the first book one year to read. At 50 yo she fell in love with the series and suggested it to me. Which I think really cements the idea that the books work for all ages.
I grew up with the books, I read them 14 years ago and watching the tv show feels like healing. It's incredible and everything I needed
I binge read all 5 pjo books in the last week and the show thus far is near IMMACULATE
A faithful adaptation that is artistically unique.
Person, Medusa is actually mixed
I already had to pause it when the opening started verbatim like the book. I just knew it was going to be great! 😍 It was indeed very nostalgic, since I read the books in middle school (later series in high school) and I’m 26 now. Though I agree that Gabe was more a pathetic Gabe than a menacing, clearly abusive Gabe, all the rest is exactly how I imagined them. I can really see why Annabeth calls Percy Seaweed brain this time. All I can say is, thank you uncle Rick!!
Bro I love it already its so good. The 3rd episode just came out and I watchedit right away Leah is Annabeth, Walker is Percy and Aryan is Grover
It’s just a basic pen nothing special about it
I mean, it's the point of the pen ˆˆ
Especially in a later scene, he will have to put back the cap on the hilt of the sword to write, a thing he never thought about XD
I get the merchandising argument, but like... between the Minotaur's horn, the sword itself (Riptide?), and of course the T-shirts and necklaces with beads, I think we've got more than our faire share of merchandising XD
I absolutely love this remake sooooo much and have actually been waiting for you to release this video on your opinion and I'm happy you love it as much as me
PERCY JACKSON LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO 🗡️🔱🌊
@@Rizzzzzzzzzzzzler ah
Finally someone said it. I understand that fans are happy to get something this close to their book, but it supposed to bea beautiful colorful magical fantasy world of Greek gods and in the adaptation it feels just like eh, law budget tv series. Or they just forgot to hire designers...
I am on the fourth book ( I started this month too.) I am glad to see different perspectives of the book and series. (I haven't watched the movies yet.) Glad Percy Jackson introduced me to you.
0:52 I’m not crying, I am internally squealing. And also crying, but no one has to know that
Yeah, I honestly love how well they portrayed Percy, as someone with adhd, a lot of the lines they gave him had me thinking “thank you so much.” I’m glad that he voices the feelings of so many of us who are different or can’t easily fit in.
Please do the other episodes too! I really like watching your videos! I’m so glad you got into Percy Jackson.
First thing, just want to say I honestly prefer that you publish your videos one week after the episodes came out. First, don't overwork yourself of course, and second, it gives me time to watch the episodes on my own without getting spoiled XD
Personally I would have two complaints, a very minor one on the SFX, I feel like Chiron is slightly off, like his horse body is too big for his human half, so he looks like a weird chimera stitched together, not an actual monster like the Minotaur or Grover.
But it's very minor, and really in a few scenes where he's shot from far aside, other than that it works fine ˆˆ
Second, from an adaptation, I don't like the way they go with Gabe, as you said he feel sanitized, and I get that they probably did it to up Sally's character which is a very good thing in my books but I have two problems with it.
But if you change the couple dynamics from "abusive husband and helpless wife" to "dysfunctionnal relationship with litte abuse", well I don't support the end method to be "kill the husband" ˆˆ'
Wow, I've written a novel about two negative points while I really enjoyed this show XD
LIKE WHY THE FUCK IS HE THAT TALL WHAT THE HELL IT’S NOT LIKE A CENTAUR IS A CREATURE THAT IS RARELY SEEN IN FILM JESUS CHRIST
Ok screaming over.
So happy about it being almost a complete 180 in terms of receiving input and feedback from the original author!
idk if anyone has said this about your videos before but i really like how they aren't over edited! im binging all of them rn lol
personally even though it has multiple differences, it really FEELS like the right adaptation of the books :]
@@Yeahright999 kinda? He was attacked buy a hell hound wasn’t he?
I don’t often get emotional when watching TV shows but this was a powerful exception. Also I *knew* that was Uncle Rick! It was dark so I wasn’t sure.
Episode 3 reaction please? It's like an extra treat after watching it, to have you also fangirling over the stuff I loved.
I have read and re read this series so many times, and so far this adaptation is A+. Sure not everyone looks exactly like I fist imagined, but they certainly embody who I imagined them to which is the important things.
I’ve never read the books, but I do really want to! The show so far has been outstanding, and it seems like it would be faithful to a book series!
I have been a fan of Percy for the past 12 or 13 years. I’m 24 now. I am so happy this series is getting the love it deserves
"just started reading the books this year" thats a mood same here
I love that you've become such a huge fan in such a short time! The joy these books bring people is always so nice to see 🥹
I just want to say that you video got me into percy jackson and now here we are
would LOVE more episode reactions. this show is actually the best thing ever as a neurodivergent kid who grew up and still adores percy jackson and the entire universe 🫶
I probably took too long with this comment, but it was all to say that I'm having a super fun time watching with my sister as well as watching other ppl watching it 😂 it's been great ❤❤
I love this adaption
That beginning was extremely healing to me
I decided to read the book before seeing the episodes that were like the chapter, for example i read until Percy meeting Hades for guarantee Medusa plot. And is wild! I wanted to end because the feeling or rush is so good.
I have been a "yeah i know some parts of Percy Jackson" thing, but actually stopping and appreciate is some different of a feeling.
This is why this show is already better than the film, it made me curious to know better.
Girl seeing you do a reaction and discussion of this so well makes me think that you would slay a Lockwood & Co. video too
I know a lot of people don't love the shows but I think the series was genuinely pretty good!
Not perfect, a bit strange, but strange in a way that brings me a LOT of joy.
I think if I had been there when the books came out [I also just picked it up at the beginning of this year] I might have been a bit more upset, but this is a truly faithful adaptation that I absolutely adore.
I hope you get to read Heroes of Olympus too and then Trials of Apollo (and maybe Magnus Chase and Kane Chronicles 😉)
"The bar was in the underworld." Nah bro, the bar was in tartarus
I love how you joined the fandom! And at the perfect time :)
Amazing video
