@@koalaeucalyptus I think they just meant that Percy Jackson took Harry Potter's place as THE coming of age fantasy book series for Gen Z. Like, I'm on the older side of Gen Z, and that's definitely my experience. My older brothers were fully in the Harry Potter world, getting the books and watching the movies as they were coming out, but for Gen Z the books and even to a large extent the movies were already fully out by the time we got to them. I still loved Harry Potter, and it was a part of my childhood, but it felt more like this done thing that everyone had already read or seen. But for me and my younger brother, the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus books kind of took the role that the Harry Potter books held for my older brothers, and it seemed this way for other people my age and younger as well. Though much less so towards the end, since I was in High School as Heroes of Olympus wrapped up, and most others my age had moved past it (though I hadn't).
Mikaila reading the book for the first time: Luke seems like a nice dude that's giving hot energy. Mikaila after reading the book: .... welp...... still hot energy
@@magicbymikaila he had a scar! How could you not see it coming! Yeah, he is just cool, even if he were evil, just the reveal in the end was badass in my opinion. No big fight, no real menace behind it, just the barest forshadowing by saying _my sword can kill Mortals too_ and his betrayal being revealed with a simple _that monster can and probably will kill you, bye_ I love it so much!
What i personally love about the Series is that "Uncle" Rick never strays from the first person POV. We learn all the things at the same time Percy does, so they sometimes come as quite a shocker. As an Creative Writing/Journalism Major in College, it can be VERY hard to maintain a First Person Perspective writing style as, since your writing the story you know what's going to happen(for like...90% of it at least) and it can be super hard to maintain it through a Book the size of PJO(not to mention an Entire series if books). So Bravo to Rick for it ....
The sad thing is for Heroes of Olympus he ditched the style. Granted, it might have been a bit confusing since each chapter switched perspectives. Still, it would have been fun. At least he does it in all his other books!
@@SuiteDevil7 True. @@OrpheusSpyros5 it feels like a more mature and refined style, which is probably why he used it for HoO where the characters are a bit older. I don't really like it when the book directly addresses the reader. I think it worked for Percy Jackson, but I would still have preferred third person
i started pjo a year ago. i'm 21 now. i'm not a big fan of 1st pov. however, pjo convinced me otherwise. it actually feels as if i'm seeing, hearing and feeling everything percy experienced. i like the narration being an extension of his thought processes, and actually feeling his humility. the fact you can tell he's humble while being the strongest demigod to exist, the fact you can actually FEEL it through how he speaks and thinks, i think that's very difficult to convey and rick riordan did an excellent job in communicating the expression. i'm currently reading heroes of olympus. it's taking a while, being a uni student surviving adulthood and assignments. but the stories are just as fantastic and i can't wait to see where this series will take me. and i don't have a favourite character. a lot of them are great. i love them all

As someone who is now 20 who only got officially diagnosed with dyslexia, adhd and autism a month ago, these books back when I was a kid were an absolute godsend. I felt insanely seen despite not knowing I shared similar diagnosis to the characters. Having dyslexia it also took me far longer to read the books than other kids, so I was engrossed in the Percy Jackson world for about 2-3 years since that was how much time it took me to read the books through the Percy Jackson and hero’s of Olympus series. This world was exactly what I needed as a kid and I know so many others felt the same
Some of my favourite things you said “I want to see Percy destroy more people with his sass!” We all do. “Luke seems like a nice dude.” heh..about that.. “POSEIDON! You are the father!” I CANT- “Beat his @ss percy.” YES! BEAT ARES’S @SS! “I love Sally Jackson.” WE STAN SALLY! “It’s like hanging up a phone call, how do you do it without being awkward?” Relatable.
That's one of my favorite things about Luke though is up until he's literally possessed by the Titan of Time he's still a nice dude AND (as a straight male) in fact gives hot energy
@@PhoenixGeneralHe goes through so much during Sea of Monsters, just for being who and what he is... and yet the movie adaptation was the greatest disrespect to him. 100% agree.
My sister once told me that the Percy Jackson books weren't just about kids with ADHD, but were written for kids with ADHD, which explains how both me and sister were always able to read them so easily as kids ps. love the video, and you should totally keep reading the books!
Honestly that does make a lot of sense now. For other books I liked they were harder to read since I’d get so distracted but with Percy Jackson I rarely get distracted.
it is honestly rare to find a series where the main character is the fan favourite! percy was definitely my favourite for most of my childhood but nico really stole my heart a few years ago and never let me go so ive gotta say he is my favourite for sure! idk if you’ve read the second series yet but he shines in it & the series after and i adore him (and he is deeply relatable for reasons i will not spoil!!)
I loved these books so much as a kid, I went into them already obsessed with Greek mythology and I own and have read all of the first and second series of books. I remember my favorite character being Leo, and my favorite book was either The Titans Curse or The Lost Hero
Her confusion with the pronunciation of the word 'satyr' was honestly too relatable lol. I started reading these books when I was 11, for the longest time I thought Chiron was pronounced as 'Chai-ron'- I was so dumbfounded when I discovered the 'h' was silent 🤣
As a former teacher, I definitely agree that kids need stories where adults don't help them and unfortunately are out to get them. Not all adults care and others may be out to get you and may never understand why, but we sometimes have to save ourselves. That being said, while I loved a Series of Unfortunate Events growing up, I can't read them now. Percy Jackson and all of his adventures I continue to read over and over. I also recommend getting the actual storybooks with the pictures. They're gorgeous and a comforting way to read the books!
I'm in my 40s and I still keep reading percy jackson over and over. I can't do that with other books. (I barely managed to grt to the end of harry potter the first time lol)
"Rick... can I call him Rick? Mr Riordan?" The fandom: **collectively agreeing to call him uncle rick** Btw if you want more Persassy you should read Heroes of Olympus. The Lost Hero doesn't have Percy but The Son of Neptune has Persassy jackson and 90% of the book is just "lets just assume everybody here wants to kill me" energy
I don’t think Mikaila realizes what she’s getting roped Into. I have been part of the fandom for so long and still haven’t finished reading the follow up series.😭
IKRRR i finished the PJO series like a couple months ago then i was like okay i know theres 30 more books but how do i read them so i foun some guides, i read HoO and finished it like last week, then I was like okay time for Trials of Apollo. But then i checked the order of publication and apparently The Kane Chronicles released before ToA so im starting that now, then I'll do Magnus Chase, then ToA, then the side/short stories and THEN I'll come to Chalice of the Gods because i want to feel a little like those older reader that had to wait like ten years to get another Percy POV. Soooo, yeah. It's been a doozy.
Did I have too much free time or what I have finished reading everything. Magnus chase Kane percy heroes of Olympus the crossovers the trials of Apollo i have read all of them
This series was one of my favourites as a child, and I still adore it to this day. Percy is one of the most likeable main characters I’ve seen, and it’s genuinely refreshing he’s sassy and snarky and, despite his own impression of himself (which we often adopt because we’re In His Head), actually pretty damn smart. Sally is also one of those truly incredible characters that I genuinely appreciate. It’s so nice to see a protagonist for this genre with a loving supportive parent who is 1) there, 2) cares for them, and 3) is aware of what is going on. A lot of times it’s easier to either remove the parents from the picture, make them bad people, or simply make them too incompetent to notice/magically blinded to the peril their children are going through. Sally is none of the above. And the way the Gabe situation was handled was serious and frankly gratifying (I don’t remember if they ended up fully explaining what happened to Gabe in the first book, but I’m happy it wasn’t a “woman has to martyr herself in abusive relationship forever” situation, and Sally managed to Get Out)
I did a completly reread before I read the last Apollo and it was super awesome and interesting to read from an adult perspective. Specially the message with god Pan hited me harder the second time. Not only because I'm older but the message behind it getting more important than ever before
I also get stressed out by books with incompetent or evil characters. I used to love Roald Dahl books, for instance, but have trouble reading them since I became an adult. But I don’t get stressed from Voldemort evil . . . more like Umbridge evil. Antagonists that are realistic and even relatable are the ones that really freak me out.
For Voldemort, he always appeared to be somewhat cool for me. I don’t know, the way he strings his words the way he’s written, it’s almost like you can read his thoughts. Umbridge just makes everybody want to beat the crap out of her.
The casual cruelty, negligence, and abuse present in all the Roald Dahl books make them harder to read as an adult, at least for me. As a kid you take those things for granted, they are part of the scary world you are growing up in, and abusive adults make interesting bad guys in a kids book. As an adult though...I spent less time wrapped up in the magic of James in the Giant peach and more time wondering why the hell no one had called child services. Still loved them as a kid and would give them to my kids if I had any.
Originally he created Percy Jackson as a bedtime story for his son, then he thought to make it a book! During this time he was also a teacher, I believe he taught history to middle schoolers. And his class would help him with ideas and editing.
If you're looking for more Percy Jackson content outside of the books, I strongly recommend the musical! It's an absolute blast and is a pretty fantastic adaptation of the first book. Also, favorite character is Nico di Angelo and my godly parent is Apollo!
As a PJO enjoyer and only having found it after I received my "adult card", I too was wondering if the vibes were too young for me as well. 5 books, a spin off series, and another spin off series later and I can wholeheartedly say "nah, good books that resonate with you, will resonate with you regardless of age." I look forward to your journey through the series and I hope you will enjoy the "Heroes of Olympus" series as much as I did!
I'm in my 40s. Read it first in my 30s when my son was 12. But I've never left the fandom. I have adhd myself and percy jackson is one of my obsessions. I love pjo, hoo and toa.
Welcome to the fandom! I may be one of the few who enjoys the Trials of Apollo series most out of any of the Greek myth series/books (for the found family and possibly the best character development of any main character that I’ve read) but the original five and absolutely incredible.
anyway if in Harry Potter series we usually choose our dorm/house like Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, in Percy Jackson I see people usually choose their Godly parent! as for me my favorite is actually Artemis but she's like, swore not to have kid, so I decided Apollo haha I love him
Artemis "adopts" kids in the Huntresses, it's not like it's completely impossible to be her affiliate like Hera or Hestia. But I don't know anyone who would want to be the daughter of Queen Bitch or Mrs Invisible XD
@@stardust1815 ofc sometimes i think about being artemis' hunter! but somehow i feels like i'm getting more like apollo kids now that i've claimed myself as one 😂 it slowly become my personality

Just in case you don't know, in the fandom we call Percy Persassy 😂Can't wait to see the reactions to the rest of the books when you upload them! I always re-read this series. BTW once you r done there r many other books such as the sequal series "Heroes of Olympus" which is written in multiple POV's (but my favourite is still Percy, although Leo is a close second). There is also a Norse themed spinoff featuring Annabeth's cousin, magnus, and an Egyption series aswell.

Percy Jackson is what got me into reading, I have dyslexia (and ADHD yay 😂) and my sister (who’s the same) started reading it to me when I was 13 and I loved it so much. That’s when I started reading, (when my sister was in France for a week I binged the Entire HP series which was my first time ever reading that much). That’s why what you said at 4:45 really resonated with me, it is the perfect bedtime story.
My favorite character was always Annabeth. I loved that she was smart but also had dyslexia... I read this as a kid and I have dyslexia. I read this series and felt that I could be a main character.
I'd love to see your reactions to the rest of this series! 🙏🏻 I've never read the books when I was younger, but I've been thinking about reading them to my son, who is neuro-spicy, like myself. I absolutely LOVE that this originated from a father wanting to show his son love and show that he's not alone in his struggles, as well as his talents and things that make him unique in a beautiful way.

This is my favourite series of all time and im so glad you covered it. Its so amazing to say that my favourite character (after all these years that i love the books and after so many characters were introduced) is percy himself. Some might think that its cliché or smt but i find it awesome, cause that just shows how good the book is, when you love the main character the most. Also i wanna mention *spoiler alert* how good the evolution of the percabeth relationship is and that it has a big and steong influence on me even when iam an adult
Good point! There are so many books where the Main character is either too bland or relatively interesting but some side character absolutely steals the show. It’s a common “fun” fact in the HP fandom that nobody’s favourite character is Harry (poor boy). In comparison, I enjoy Percy as a character and as protagonist - someone with complexity and lightheartedness despite his hardships and I never get tired of his storytelling style. Additionally, I absolutely adore the Percy-Sally dynamic and Percabeth 😊
I started reading Percy Jackson about 2 months ago and I loved it! I'm reading "The blood of olympus" and i'm enjoying this book series, too; I really recommend it. My favourite characters are Annabeth, Nico di Angelo and Thalia.
Just got to the end of the video, and I'm glad you're getting into PJO! Personally I can't wait until you get to the Heroes of Olympus series because Leo is my absolute favorite character, he's always the funny jokester comic relief, but Uncle Rick gave him such an emotional story, it's soooooooo good! Also I hope you check out the rest of the Riordan-verse like the Chronicles of Kane and Magnus Chase series, they tackle the Egyptian and Norse Pantheon respectively and are both great in their own rights!
I also loved his new universe based on Twenty Leagues Under Sea (cnan"t remember the title especially as I read it in french XD), I've found it refreshing, and also finally a girl as the main (solo) character XD
Your summation reading it as an adult is how I felt reading when I was in middle school and rereading the audiobooks as a recent college grad. Very nostalgic
My favorite is Piper (Heroes of Olympus) (user name implies that), but I like her and Annabeth because I relate to them. I don’t have the best relationship with my parents, so it was nice to be able to see my self in characters like them.
Im sorry but i don't like piper because even though its said that all of Aphrodite children goes through this but she broke you know whos heart and she practically pursued him
Yes! Uncle Rick's child characters are some of the best ones i have ever read! Hee just understands children in a way that is absolutely amazinh. I always thought it was because he was a history teacher, so he has come in contact with a lot of kids in his life. Though it's not every teacher that has that understanding. But even as the years progress, his writing keeps being very successfull in portraying the new generations of children that come. Uncle Ricks trully writes his books FOR kids and teenagers. He's the best at doing that.
I really hope you go on to read the other books in this series. I absolutely love every entry. Especially the Kane Chronicles set, and the Roman Greek set is insane, all of them are tied together too which is like a Multiverse of gods in book form
Uncle rick has done so much for me growing up. He’s taught me lessons no other author has. Most importantly he’s shown us anyone can be a hero. But yeah I agree he has a special way of talking about tough topics, which kids encounter, in a way that’s easy to comprehend and relate to. Helps us feel less alone in our struggles and helps us understand someone else’s struggles better
Several things here. 1. I grew up reading harry potter too. That didn't stop me from reading this series as well as hunger games and the twilight books too. Twilight will always be at the bottom. 2. If you want an accurate depiction of a satyr. Look at Danny devito as Phil in Hercules. The only accurate thing in the disney movie lol 3. You do need to read some Greek plays and poems. It helps bring things into perspective. And you'll learn what a freak zues is and he needs to be locked up 😳 4. Percy should be happy that he faced Ares and not Kratos lol
Yeah, I have read like the first two books of this series, then went on a huge greek mythology binge reading and then came back. having an understanding of what creatures are out there is super interesting for this series in particular, bc one can start guessing what kind of monster they are gonna meet. It also helps understand motivations a bit better behind the actions of gods. It made the books "interactive" in a sense that I could not only enjoy the story, but also stop before the reveal and guess myself a bit. I havent really managed to get any creatures right yet bc there are just too many, but I hope I get points for trying.
I tried the first lotr book when I was teenager. I gave up when Frodo and Sam left the shire,I remember some female character kept following and Gandalf tried to get them to loose her. I did not even read the man the legend the sex icon Tom Bombadil.
I love the PJO books, and I was a PJO kid, not a Harry Potter kid, but I read Harry Potter during Covid lockdowns in high school. I love both universes and I'm a huge fan. I'm a daughter of Athena and a Ravenclaw, and my favourite characters are Leo from the PJO universe and Hermione from HP. The HOO is even more intense and amazing imo, and Leo is the best character and his story...AHHH🥰🤩
I spent years boycoting Percy Jackson because i watched the movies first i spent years amd finaly gave in earlier this year and i just finished every book my rick riordan all 5 series
I think i definitely infused my personality with all of the cool girls in literature I read growing up, e.g. Alanna of treebond, Ginny and DEFINITELY Annabeth lol, also we call the author uncle rick lol
I think I infused mine mostly with villains and antagonists. Dumbledore may be one of the few good guys I tried to infuse my personality with. I wanted to be as smart and wise as he was.
I totally agree about that feeling of adventure!! Just finished rereading the first series as an adult and its so lovely remembering why i loved and resonated with this story so much :))
You singlehandedly brought me back headfirst into this fandom when you made that short about how unhinged our Persassy boy is. So, I would like to say welcome. You should read Heroes of Olympus too because I know you will LOVE Leo (and most everything else). My favorite part about that series though is Percy just still being an unhinged dork and everybody else's reaction to that. He still thinks he's a confused but snarky loser who's just making everything up as he goes, Annabeth still thinks he's her lovable idiot, and literally everyone else thinks that he is FREAKING TERRIFYING and always about 30 seconds away from mouthing off the wrong God and either murdering them or getting himself murdered trying. Everybody is of course, objectively correct.
100% agree 😂 I recently started the audio books to HoO (can’t believe I waited this long!) and I finally understand everybody’s obsession with Leo. And yes, I love that Percy is constantly bickering with any god he comes across and doesn’t give a shit how that might have consequences. He’s definitely got a leader personality that others feel drawn to and yet he behaves like the adorkable neighbourhood boy that might help you with your homework.
One of my favourite lines from the first book is "I left my mom in very capable hands; her own" (paraphrased because I don't remember it exactly) it just hits, in those moments of seriousness and more mature subject matter. but the way it was written also still sounds like percy, not like an adult dropping some wise saying into the narrative.
I also just got into the story recently (I'm over 20), ironically by reading the newest book first (I couldn't walk past the ✨✨gay ✨✨and not read it.) and I loved it! I'm currently at "The mark of Athena). I read the first five books in under five days after finishing "The Sun and The Star"
I actually also read Percy Jackson as adult. I was a Harry Potter kid as well! and yes omg Percy Jackson series is really easy to read. very nice and fun. my favorite character is Will Solace!! please I already eye-ing him since his debut on Chapter 12 of The last Olympian (actually all of Apollo kids bcs I liked Apollo since the third book hahaha)
I started Percy Jackson in August and I enjoyed it so much. I discovered Percy through the movies, that everyone hates, but when I finally mamy years later go to the library again. I decide to pick up the books and I loved every second!
I just can't wait for you to completely sink in the Riordan's world and meet Leo, Piper, Magnus, Alex and the rest of their stories... I also read this series for the first time as an adult and it reminded me of this childlike happiness when all you want to do is read a book and go into that fantasy world
Annabeth is 100% my favorite og character. Throughout the series as more characters are introduced, it beomes difficult to choose, but Annabeth is a steady, logical presence throughout the series, and she brings a sense of stability for me, especially when the story gets crazier.
It is kind of crazy (and cool) to see some of the reactions people have reading these books for the first time. Because PJO and Series of Unfortunate Events where my childhood
Percy Jackson is one of my all-time favorite characters in any media. I love him dearly, and I'm so glad you get to experience this series. It's so good and I'm happy to see more people pick up these books.
I just started reading Percy Jackson about 2 months ago and I am already up to Trials of Apollo. I love the series and am SO happy to finally see it on this channel!!!! Your amazing Mikaila (Also could we get the scene where they meet the poodle in book 1?)
I absolutely love all of your reactions and whole energy while reading the book. I also never read Percy Jackson as a child but I also never read Harry Potter until way later. I read the first book of PJO after watching the first movie. After hearing the news about the series coming to Disney+, I read the entire series and became a huge fan. I would love to see a video of you taking the quiz of who’s your godly parent.
I just finished listening to the audio book and that (1:58) explains why enjoyed listening to it, especially in the evening. I don't think I would like reading it that much, I'm quite a picky reader and I like books that are more elaborately written. It's why I just couldn't bring myself to like Shadow & Bone, the writing just felt too simple, too easy, too unelaborate. I had a few issues with percy jackson too, moments which where just skipped over too quickly, but it allows the story to be a lot quicker and more fast paced. Probably a good thing for a teen book. And also a good quality for a bed time story though it did keep me from sleeping at times too haha. I just needed to know how he'd get away from the chimera - at like 2am at night.
I love how you said that listening to stories in audio form was the way people used to do in old times. This is such a heart-warming sentiment. I am 100% stealing it for future arguments with people who dislike audiobooks for some stupid reasons Your journey was very fun to witness (not-so-patiently waiting for books 3-5)
“I was a Harry Potter kid don’t judge me” Girl I relate I started reading pjo a couple months ago I’m up to the son of Neptune (I’m a quick reader) It took me so long to get into it, I was raised in a Harry Potter family.
Percy and co constantly running into weird traps is basically classical greek mythology. The Odyssey is basically a dude stumbling from problem to problem when his goal is literally just to go home.
So I saw the movies and thought they were alright and then discovered they were books, it wasn’t until I was listening to someone read the beginning of the first one that I was like omg! I would have loved this series as a kid. I then discovered I would have been an older teen when these came out originally and am so sad that I missed out reading it when I was younger but I legit never heard of them until like the movies. So you have inspired me to also read them as an adult, although it will have to wait a bit cause I have a ridiculous list of books to get through as yes you never have time as an adult 😢

Getting to know Percy and then seeing him get more powerful as the stories go on was such a power fantasy.

I just really like the way everything gets represented in this, you can really feel the passion for the story and characters.

Good point! There are so many books where the Main character is either too bland or relatively interesting but some side character absolutely steals the show. It’s a common “fun” fact in the HP fandom that nobody’s favourite character is Harry (poor boy).

The only accurate thing in the disney movie lol

Yasss. ALL DA LADIES LUV LEO
And RR just gets better, I am so happy we have books like Trials of Apollo in our kid's section.
1:31 That’s why we call him Persassy
One of my favourite lines from the first book is "I left my mom in very capable hands; her own" (paraphrased because I don't remember it exactly)
it just hits, in those moments of seriousness and more mature subject matter. but the way it was written also still sounds like percy, not like an adult dropping some wise saying into the narrative.

IKR THIS ALWAYS BUGS ME!
You’d think they’d stop trusting so easily??
I actually also read Percy Jackson as adult. I was a Harry Potter kid as well! and yes omg Percy Jackson series is really easy to read. very nice and fun.
my favorite character is Will Solace!! please I already eye-ing him since his debut on Chapter 12 of The last Olympian (actually all of Apollo kids bcs I liked Apollo since the third book hahaha)
Head cannon about will he was the new Apollo camp who drove the chariot in book 2
This also lines up pretty clean with his timeline
2:15 Spolier alert: Rick basically swapped satyrs and fauns
It is kind of crazy (and cool) to see some of the reactions people have reading these books for the first time. Because PJO and Series of Unfortunate Events where my childhood
3:40 was ready for the audible sponsor but was pleasantly surprised
Percy Jackson is one of my all-time favorite characters in any media. I love him dearly, and I'm so glad you get to experience this series. It's so good and I'm happy to see more people pick up these books.
Hopefully this becomes a series! That's like at least a dozen more videos
Lol try 32 if she decides to do all the main series and side books
"Luke seems like a nice dude" THE WAY I FROZE
I just started reading Percy Jackson about 2 months ago and I am already up to Trials of Apollo. I love the series and am SO happy to finally see it on this channel!!!! Your amazing Mikaila (Also could we get the scene where they meet the poodle in book 1?)
I love that you have a more accurate portrayal of the characters than the official movies or TV show
“Luke seamed like a nice guy”Mikalla said calmly
I absolutely love all of your reactions and whole energy while reading the book. I also never read Percy Jackson as a child but I also never read Harry Potter until way later. I read the first book of PJO after watching the first movie. After hearing the news about the series coming to Disney+, I read the entire series and became a huge fan. I would love to see a video of you taking the quiz of who’s your godly parent.
Mikaila: "Luke seems like a nice dude."
Me: "Just wait until the end. . ."
Your gonna love hero’s of Olympus
We've done it guys, we've made her a pjo fan.
“Luke seems like a nice dude” got my crying laughing 😂
I love how you said that listening to stories in audio form was the way people used to do in old times. This is such a heart-warming sentiment. I am 100% stealing it for future arguments with people who dislike audiobooks for some stupid reasons
Your journey was very fun to witness (not-so-patiently waiting for books 3-5)
I'm an adult who read the series as a kid, I am currently rereading them 😅 absolutely love the series and all of uncle Rick's works
“I was a Harry Potter kid don’t judge me”
Girl I relate I started reading pjo a couple months ago I’m up to the son of Neptune (I’m a quick reader) It took me so long to get into it, I was raised in a Harry Potter family.
OMG! Finally! Mika joins us long sufferrings..........
Citing the deep magic, I see.
PERCY AND NICO ARE ABSOLUTE ANGELS
