1:11:55 fun fact: Walker (percy's actor) always wears makeup to not look washed out while filming, and when percy got poisoned, they just took off the makeup. so his "sickness" is just walker's natural glow
I don't think they bring it up in the show, but the reason Clarisse was so mad about her broken spear was because it was a gift from her dad, Ares. It's made to be similar to Ares' own spear.
Episode 4 where Percy falls off the St. Louis arc and gets grabbed by the Mississippi River is a point of some contention in the fandom lol. In the book, Percy jumps off the Arch into the river on purpose to get away from Echidna. Which is mildly impossible, because the Mississippi River is about a mile away from the Arch. Rick has admitted he made a mistake when he wrote the scene because he assumed the river ran through the Arch. So when this show was first announced, everyone started theorizing how the hell this scene was going to work. And the answer was "yoink!"
I lived in St. Louis. The Mississippi River is not "about a mile" away from the arch, it is pretty close, like 500 FEET. The issue that Rick admitted he overlooked is that he assumed the arch spanned over the river, so when Percy fell he thought he would just fall right into the river. But the arch is actually next to the river, so under it is just land. Percy would need to be blown a few hundred feet to the east while falling in order to hit the river.
I didn't know who Walker when I saw he was cast as Percy so to see how good of an actor he is I watched the movie you're talking about and a line he says in that movie I don't remember but it was the line was something like "have you ever gotten your ass kicked by a 12 year old" I immediately knew he was the perfect Percy and honestly he and all the kids in their roles are perfect🥰 btw I'm 26 and watching this show cuz I discovered the books in middle school and have been into the series for years
I think the thing about Luke's character that I like the most is that he did genuinely care about Percy. Even in the end fight, you could see that he didn’t *want* to hurt him. He was trying really hard to get him on his side so he wouldn’t have to.
Still the best adaptation of my childhood favorite book series I could have ever hoped for. The changes are good, the times they quoted directly made me grin incredibly wide, and it somehow managed to capture the atmosphere perfectly. My comfort show. I'm so glad y'all are doing this.
They did the Sally/Gabe relationship such a disservice in this imo. Gabe is an abusive piece of shit in the books, which is why Sally stayed with him. She believed that his aura was so disgusting, that it would hide Percy from the monsters (In one of the books Percy says that Tartarus, the deepest pit in the underworld, smells like Gabe). In the book Sally uses Medusa's head to turn Gabe into a statue and sells him to an art gallery.
I really wish they kept it in, because even though the tone shift and later, Gabe’s demise better matches Greek mythology, the original was just too good to pass up
agreed but I don’t mind how they did it because at least Gabe is gone. but I feel like that detail of why she stayed with him matters so much to show how much she sacrificed for him. but the show did a good job of showing that emotion anyways. I think the movie had a more accurate Gabe but again I personally don’t mind it. I feel like if they had more episodes with more time, they could have shown that more abusive side of Gabe and the affect it had on Percy and Sally.
It's fairly accurate to the book. They moved a few things around for practicality and to help streamline some story elements but it's faithful overall. The only thing I wish they could have that they can't for practical reasons is, in the books, Percy isn't supposed to be able to get wet unless he wants to or the water is under the control of an opposing sea god
Honestly I like some of the changes like Gabe being more annoying and pathetic than abusive and rude. Though, I think the kids seemingly knowing what’s going to happen gets a little annoying. It leaves out some tension for situations. Bc yes some of the traps they fall for are obvious and stupid but they’re kids and it’s cool to see how they’ll navigate those situations and slowly discovering what’s going on instead of instantly guessing it.
A really nice detail I noticed were the parallels between Medusa and Athena. Athena blamed and punished Medusa for something Poseidon did, turning her into a monster. She did the exact same to Annabeth. She blamed her daughter for something a son of Poseidon did (bringing him into her temple probably didn’t help), and punished her by letting a monster come after her when she could have protected her. Luke wasn’t trying to kill Percy. Kronos needs Percy alive, so Luke went along with the plan knowing that Percy wouldn’t be killed. Grover, however, is just a random satyr to Kronos and would’ve most definitely been killed had he fell into Tartarus. You can see the guilt in Luke’s eyes when he says “I didn’t think you’d give them to Grover to wear”. He realized he almost got his own protector killed.

Fun fact (and its all non-spoiler, coming from a long time book reader) but Percy has 2 main nicknames in the fandom. Persassy, cause hes even sassier in the books and sarcastic as hell. And Percy "pay your child support" Jackson for reasons know to book readers. But you commented that Percy was trying to change the game with Annabeth's perception of love and I immediately thought of it. Percy is ALL FOR changing the game and actually making the gods respect and appreciate their kids mostly because of our queen and savior Sally Jackson.
The thunder when Sally asked if Poseidon wanted to talk to Percy was a night touch 👌🏻. I absolutely LOVED this season! I do wish some of the eps were a tad longer, BUT, this has been exponentially better than the movies for me as a book reader. I’m almost 28, and read these as they released
Clarisse was so upset about her spear because it's the one gift she had from Ares. The most important thing in her life was being the toughest person at camp and her spear, Percy took both of those away in three days. Also it's a summer camp, hence they left at the same time. And Gabe was MUCH worse in the books, which they might mention at some point in future seasons, but he canonically hit Sally and she actively killed him in the books with medusa's head and sold him to an art museum or a collector or something and got a bunch of money from it that allowed them to buy a bigger apartment and let her go to college to study writing and quit her job at a sweet shop.
can't wait for season 2, by the sounds of it they're taking a break from the Volume stage and using actual locations. Apparently they were seen filming on a beach in British Columbia
I'm so excited cuz I've been getting into Epic the musical cuz i absolutely love the Odyssey so when I realized Sea of Monsters is basically just the Odyssey I felt so dumb for not realizing it in middle school 😅
@@DianaDxD I absolutely love how Rick put modern spins on the classic greek epics. The odyssey is pretty obvious with Sea of Monsters, but if you pay attention in The Last Olympian, if you follow a certain two campers, one doesn't fight out of pride, while the other takes up their armor to lead the charge. Directly mirroring Achilles and Patrocles in the Illiad.
The Percy and Luke relationship is just perfect they are amazing parallels/character foils. Luke is such a perfect antagonist because on some level he is right about the gods they are shitty parents, they are selfish, they don’t care about their kids (for the most part). It would be so easy for Percy to join Luke, and I think some part of Percy agrees with Luke just not with his method of teaming up with Kronos. I’m glad in the show they really dedicated a substantial amount of time in developing the percy and luke relationship because I think it makes the betrayal hit even harder than in the books (in my personal opinion). And their fight at the end of episode 8 also shows both their fatale flaws (all demigods have a fatale flaw) Percy’s is personal loyalty (when he apologized to Luke for hurting him while they were literally sword fighting) and Luke’s is excessive wrath (he immediately swings back harder even after Percy apologizes for hurting him) 😭😭
This was a pretty faithful adaptation to the books and it's greatly appreciated. The step dad, Gabe, was way worse to Percy and his mom (even physically abusive) and it's actually Sally that uses Medusa's head to turn him into stone and then sold the statue.
This was a faithful adaption for me. As someone who has enjoyed the books for over 15 years, the changes that were made in the show made it better and brought somethings into present day. Not leaving it in 2005 when Rick Riordan originally wrote the book. I can't wait for season 2! The author also worked closely on the show which makes me and a lot of fans feel better about the small changes that were made.
Right. It actually followed the book, as the movies should have done! I’ve read where the author was pissed! I’m glad he’s finally getting the retelling of his books he deserves!
I love how you react to the word “half-bloods”, fun fact, in an extended series of the books there’s a character that is half black and half Egyptian God and when Percy calls him a half-blood for the first time he almost knocks Percy out cuz he’d never heard that term before 💀
Carter was half black and half white mixed, the Egyptian gods didn't really do demigod children, and it was more of a quick interaction where Carter legitimately thought Percy was being racist
So happy there's reaction to this series, and I'm vary glad you loved it. Can't wait for S2, and I really hope Disney greenlights at least all 5 books of original series, they set up the story so well
We would definitely watch live action reactions, I love Brooklyn 99, I'd love to see you watch it! I love how it's Hephaestus specifically that Annabeth convinces... cause out of all the Gods, he's the one who knows full well how the Gods treat each other, what the Gods are like, cause he's experienced it since birth (When he was born, Hera thought he was so ugly that she threw him out of Olympus) From what I can remember, Hephaestus doesn't actually show up in the books this early, but I really like what they did with him and this scene, not to mention them casting an actual disabled actor to play him
This is a fun reaction, thank you for supporting Percy Jackson. Watching this while waiting for Season 2. Excited for everyone especially you to react to Season 2.
2:18:22 That little speech at the end meant to much to me as a kid. The idea that my ADHD and low processing meant that in this world I was a demi-god was so cool to think about! And such a fun idea compared to how everyone treated me in reality. Neurotypicals, I hope you like this series still, but it isn't for you the same deep way it is for people like me who think a little different🥰
Please don't anyone spoil the rest of the series for him! It was so much fun to watch a reaction from someone who doesn't know what's going to happen. I didn't even consider the possibility that Annabeth was the imposter, but now I see how much they were building that up and it's so chilling. There is a Dark Annabeth AU out there somewhere and I wanna read it XD
My niece saw me cry for the first time a year after my father died. I’ve never seen her show emotion, the hug she gave me damn near broke my heart a second time that day.
Percy and Annabeth are supposed to be 12 (almost 13) here in book/season 1. The original 5 books take place over 4 summers (and 1 winter in between). Grover is older in years but not maturity, due to being a satyr.
Loooved this reaction, idk if u noticed how grover said he was gonna go on a search for pan at the end and it's situated at the sea, well book 2/season 2 is called 'sea of monsters' and basically continous on thatt. Hope you'll check that out as well!
LOVED the reaction! I’ve been a fan of these books for almost 10 years and all I can say is that I really liked this show. Yes, they changed things but honestly, I didn’t feel like those changes ruined the essence of the story Also, I felt like the energy of the characters was there throughout the whole season (Sorry if I sound like a robot, English isn't my first language)
Just for some clarification, in the books Grover didn't rat Percy out, Grover instead tried to take the blame for him, but Miss Dodds used the situation to separate Percy from the others to try to attack him, Mr Brunner then shows up and gives him a pen that turns into a sword to kill Miss Dodds, then Mr Brunner and Grover act like nothing happened and like Miss Dodds didn't exist at all.
Absolutely love your reaction. I've been a fan of Rick Riordan since the Tres Navarre series. I couldn't even get through the first Percy movie because of how bad it is. But I've watched the series countless times and I'm still obsessed with it. It's not just faithful to the books, it enhances them where it should. The show is perfect so far and I hope we get to see the rest of the books come to life through this same cast and crew.
I overall enjoyed this series. I agree with people that it moves a little too fast, not giving the characters time to figure things out for themselves on screen. I like a lot of aspects of this series, and I also like a lot of aspects of the film.
14:50 “This went from 0 to 100” haha i hope one of the later book series abt annabeth’s cousin gets a series its about norse mythology and he dies within the first 50 pages
There's still elements of abuse seen here, they may go more into it in later episodes. We dont yet see any physical abuse but it's obvious Gabe thinks Sally being able to do things she wants is because he is "allowing her" after she agrees to do something he wants. That's a sign of emotional abuse
He's still abusive in the show it's abuse that isn't seen but more of an emotional one and he's just as manipulative in the show when he was spewing his crocodile tears of Sally and Percy disappearing. Plus I think showing physical abuse would've been really triggering to people and kids who either have a parent and/or step parent like Gabe
Yeah. In the books, he's far more physically abusive towards Sally, and I guess that would've made him easier to hate, and thus his petrification a lot more enjoyable. Also, props to the Percy Jackson series to not have a redemption arc for an abusive parental guardian and to just get rid of them in the first book. One thing I'm expecting in season 2 is that Percy and Clarisse can bond a bit over having abusive father figures (Clarisse's being Ares and Percy's being Gabe). We never really saw that and I think it'd be a good idea.
The kids are great and the series is better than the movies, but the movies had such great casting... Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Nathan Fillion as Hermes, Stanley Tucci as Dionysus... and so many more.Except for Edge as Ares, total chef's kiss.
I feel like I should mention that Gabe is MUCH worse in the books (it’s implied that he physically abused both Sally and Percy) but they didn’t want it to be as Graphic in the show
I didn't see it in the comments, so Im gonna say it: the reason Clarisse screamed at Percy for breaking her spear was because it was a gift from Ares (her dad).
I love percy jackson and it's really good that they are making a series about it and it was so god damn good, the actors did a really good job and I hope Disney adapt at least the 5 books
Fun Fact: The Author of Percy Jackson Series, "Rick Riordan," he played the Principle, also not only the book fans hate the movie, that includes the Author too.
One of the changes from the books I am not particularly pleased about is the entrance to the underworld and the struggle in crusty's shop. In the book, they face a LOT more danger in the mattress shop and barely make it out, and I was excited to see the scene brought to life, as well as the books entrance to the underworld. I looked forward to it for weeks as it was coming out, and was kinda disappointed with how they did it. Most changes I understand, but if anyone has a reason for this change it would be greatly appreciated, because I can't find anything other than runtime being a reason. And it honestly bugs me
Hades has always been the best of the big 3. Other than Persephone who grew to love him, he’s pretty much just done his job and caused the least harm. Which is why Disney’s Hercules is a hard watch for me.
59:28 Remember that, because percy is gonna have thousands by the end of season 5. 😂 1:01:57 If you listen closely, percy just sang "consensus~" even though it was not the lyrics. means he doesn't know the rest.

33 minutes in I feel like every single beat of intent behind the writing and acting (particularly when keeping the books in mind) has gotten through to you and that is insane to me, and ups my respect for this adaptation as a loooong time reader of the books. Well except a couple easter eggs but just because they didn't actually mean anything to you without the reference, yknow? So, yeah. Good on Rick and the writers, good on the people acting, and good on you, too. You were *in* so goddamn fast, and I just love that. I was almost exclusively bothered by the pacing of this show, but I was very fucking bothered by it. But the more I watch reactions to it, the less bothered I am. Especially this one. The beats are hitting you, somehow, as fast as they are, and with that little build-up. Which says a bit about the execution, I believe. We do still need more time in season 2, though. We need it badly.
Parents are interesting to discuss movies with 😆 My dad's favorite Star Wars movie is Episode 1 because he likes the pod racing scene. He had no clue people disliked Jar Jar Binks until I was in middle school and made an internet joke about him.
You guys should watch Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Its long but so worth it in the end. Gets better every season and slowly incorperates super powers, magic rocks, time travel, aliens etc. Really cool plot.
I love the use of Burnt Offerings in this adaptation - Percy burns his first (on screen) offering to his mother, literally praying to her. His mother, meanwhile, doesn't burn the best of the meal but the dregs, and gets a full on summoning of her god-husband. She's a G

Yes they got a bigger budget , season 1 had a budget even smaller than the first movie .
I appreciate how much you know about Greek mythology going into this.
6:41 Cameo from Rick Riordan (the book author) at the back left. He used to be a schoolteacher.
Exactly I loved it too
agreed!
The Oracle has a twisted sense of humor. She knew Gabe would annoy Percy the most so she chose him!
Better than the movies by several miles. 💜
fr tho
That's not hard
Right. It actually followed the book, as the movies should have done! I’ve read where the author was pissed! I’m glad he’s finally getting the retelling of his books he deserves!
@@KimC657Rick (the author of the books) helped write for the show.
The true form is a mythological thing, if a mortal looks at it, they're straight up disintegrated.
@@jamesdiggs1998oh yeah it’s been a while since I’ve read the Kane Chronicals 😅
@@aubryellaotero1064either way, it's still a remarkable catch
@@aubryellaotero1064I oddly enough liked the Kane Chronicles more, but that's probably cuz I'm a massive Egyptian mythology fan/nerd. Lmao
"I swear if Luke betrays him"
Me in the background cackling
So happy there's reaction to this series, and I'm vary glad you loved it. Can't wait for S2, and I really hope Disney greenlights at least all 5 books of original series, they set up the story so well
The underworld isn't hell, it contains multiple different afterlifes depending on how great or terrible the people who died are.
We would definitely watch live action reactions, I love Brooklyn 99, I'd love to see you watch it!
I love how it's Hephaestus specifically that Annabeth convinces... cause out of all the Gods, he's the one who knows full well how the Gods treat each other, what the Gods are like, cause he's experienced it since birth (When he was born, Hera thought he was so ugly that she threw him out of Olympus)
From what I can remember, Hephaestus doesn't actually show up in the books this early, but I really like what they did with him and this scene, not to mention them casting an actual disabled actor to play him
1:35 😂 my mom is the type that loves shouting predictions every five minutes
Luke is right about nearly everything, except teaming up with Kronos. That's the last thing you want in power.
59:28 “Percy got a head count” trust me his head count is way more ridiculous than you think 😭
This is a fun reaction, thank you for supporting Percy Jackson. Watching this while waiting for Season 2. Excited for everyone especially you to react to Season 2.
Been anticipating this one a couple months! Excited to relive this show and hear from Boom about it.
U made my day man, super funny reaction! Percy Jackson is the best
The actor for Dionysus is Jason Mantzoukas! Same man who voice acts Rex-splode in Invincible!
damn this was so surprising, didn't expect you to react to this! so glad you're enjoying it
A boom solo react? I am 100% on board. They did a much much better job portraying the books than the movies did
Loooved this reaction, idk if u noticed how grover said he was gonna go on a search for pan at the end and it's situated at the sea, well book 2/season 2 is called 'sea of monsters' and basically continous on thatt. Hope you'll check that out as well!
This reaction just made me really happy :)
Great reaction Boom! As someone who read the books I thought this show was really good!
43:07 he’s playin both sides cause Dionysus was seconds away from turning his furry butt into a worm still very aware of previously being a satyr
LOVED the reaction!
I’ve been a fan of these books for almost 10 years and all I can say is that I really liked this show. Yes, they changed things but honestly, I didn’t feel like those changes ruined the essence of the story
Also, I felt like the energy of the characters was there throughout the whole season (Sorry if I sound like a robot, English isn't my first language)
They did a great job with this show. Cant wait for season 2!
Book 1 - 12/13
Book 2 -13/14
Book 3- 14
Book 4-15
Book 5 -15/16
14:50 “This went from 0 to 100” haha i hope one of the later book series abt annabeth’s cousin gets a series its about norse mythology and he dies within the first 50 pages
3:08 "Whats the difference" is one of the main points of the series and its crazy how you gessed that in the first MINUTE
“Everything points to Poseidon.. even that sign that pointed!”
Percy Jackson has always been my favorite book series of all time. He is like an American Harry Potter.
FYI Gabe was very abusive in the books, but this version is just a stupid guy
@@ashleyjohnson9651it's washed down to a point where it's pretty odd that the show expects us to enjoy him be petrified at the end
@@andalilbitqueer probably why they changed it to an accident as opposed to having Sally sell him as art
The sword pen is mightier than the pen pen.... I am dying!!!
Ares will take any chance to fuck with Athena. So he probably decided to help Athenas brat after she ignored her own kid.
Actor playing Ares is a wrestler (Edge/Adam Copeland)
I love these reactions!
1:01:57 If you listen closely, percy just sang "consensus~" even though it was not the lyrics. means he doesn't know the rest.
Man I wish this was group reaction but I still enjoyed it so much. Such good adaptation
So here for this!
22:30 yh The younger Olympian gods are busy but the busiest are always my fav trio Apollo, Hermes and Dionysus
28:53 That's just Percy Jackson, we laugh when everything falls into hell LITERALLY
32:23 Dionysus will turn him into a crazy dolphin (read the books to understand the reference 😂 )
1:04:04 Are u sure u aren't a prophet or smth😂
anyways loved your reactions☺
26:03 "Even that one sign who pointed" LMAO
Ever since this show came out almost a year ago I just knew I recognized the train cop in episode 4. I FINALLY just figured it out after an hour searching everywhere because the show i know him from wasn't listed on Google under things he's been in. If anyone is curious, he played Dr cee in chilling adventures of sabrina
i fw group reaction channels cause the energy is diff as a full group or combinations and even solo. I love every one of the diff energies it brings and feels fresh i fw all of sorta stupid
I love the immediate Luke distrust (his motives may be valid but his methods could use some work)
I love that the trip Percy has in episode 2 was real, but they were so locked in that they stayed in character
I enjoyed this video so much!!!!
The actor who plays Procrutes is the only actor from the infamous movie,he played Charon.
Ep 4 makes me realize that Percy Jackson is a true Gryffindor lol
She's a G
The author had a cameo in the principal scene. He is chilling in the armchair near thw window.
“I seldom cahoot” will never not be the funniest shit ever
That last line about not fitting in hits, when you know why rick Riordan made the percy jacksin books
1:18:17 The Rated R!!! Superstar!!! Edge!/Adam Copeland!!!
Was so happy see him in this
AMAZING
Yes sir my boy edge still my favorite wwe wrestler
This show really is sick, but the books are soooo fucking good! I’ve read the first ten of the series, and it’s amazing storytelling!
Welcome to fandom, have a look around, any Greek/Roman God that brain of yours can think of can be found. We got mountains of fan fic, some is pretty good some is pretty dog shit, if none of its of interest to you you’d be the first….
Edit: NOW FOR THE SEQUEL!! “We don’t talk about the MOVIES”
Im pretty sure in the books, Sally straight up put the medusa head in the fridge and when Gabe opens it he turns to stone and then Sally sold his petrified body as a stone sculpture to fund her writing career
