I think my favorite scene from this episode was Annabeth and Grover splashing water on Percy in a desperate attempt to heal him and how bizarre it looks out of context to onlookers. XD

In the book, I remember Percy being scared of drowning and the Nereid telling him to breathe, and he even mentions how its kind of difficult for him to want to breathe underwater and he kinda has to force himself to do it. A very good book accurate moment IMO!

Something I can't believe they haven't done yet is that they haven’t explained that the monsters regenerate and sometimes it takes a long time and sometimes it doesn't. Seeing Ms. Dodds again was actually the perfect chance because Percy had recently killed her, he should have been curious about how she was back.

@@roguevirgo902I think the person means a BETTER way to build the world when it comes to the show(at leats that’s what I hope they mean).
Live-action shows unlike books/comics is something that usually fully utilises all it’s medium such as sound and visual, for them to talk about how monsters regenerate in a rushed way makes it seem somewhat unimportant as it is said quickly e.g Imagine if Dumbledore were to explain Harry’s importance in a quick manner.
Using the commenters way of showing the scene would not only bring the viewers attention immediately through shock of a ‘dead character’ reviving but also make the viewers especially if they have not seen the show ask more questions about the world and become more interested.
This is what is dome in a lot of visual media such as comics/films/manga and especially anime.

The only thing i was upset about was they missed the best joke from the series. When Percy was falling from the arch, his narration about last thoughts should be profound but his was "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!". The first time i read that i cracked up so much i had to put it down and laugh for a good 10 minutes. They could have had Percy do that narration by him falling it slowing down he says the deep part, but then he starts yelling. It would have been hysterical.

Yeah, the whole time I was waiting for "isn't that a kind of anteater?" From percy. Very disappointing that they didn't include that. They took so many other iconic moments and one-liners straight out of the book, like "I am impertinent" and "you drool when you sleep," though I'm sure all the fans were going to massacre the cast and crew and writers if they didn't include "you drool when you sleep." That line did seem really awkwardly shoved in there, however. It was part of his unintelligible half-awake montage, instead of being a full line that he actually understood. Actually, most fans get this wrong about that. They believe that "you drool when you sleep" was the first thing annabeth said to percy, but actually, while she was feeding him ambrosia, she asked him some questions. She said something along the lines of, "What was stolen? What is the summer solstice deadline?" Those were her true first words. Sorry, I sort of started rambling. I am disappointed that they didn't include the line about echidna the anteater.

I think that making it a disembodied voice can be harder for viewers to have a connection with on what is happening. Percy is neurodivergent with ADHD and dyslexia but those are reframed as battlefield reflexes and Ancient Greek language.
Hearing voices can be more interpreted as a mental illness and saying prophetic dreams might not land the same way.

Loved the Athena plot point. It illustrates how unpredictable the gods are and how they have no regard for their children. I also took it as Athena not being amused that Annabeth starts to get along with Percy. So I personally saw it as a punishment for a daughter of Athena consorting with a son of Poseidon. It also gives Annabeth the opportunity to examine her relationship with her mother.
Also I don't think Sally lost her patience, I interpreted it more as a panic attack. Hence the "breathe".

I really don't know why Riordan tried to set her up as a sympathetic character by having Percy's mom use her as an example for how 'not all beings who look monstrous are monsters' when she is definitely totally a monster whose been killing innocent non-mythical people who have nothing to do with her curse for thousands of years.

In the books, she meets Percy by nursing him back to health, and she says her iconic “you drool when you sleep” line right before she leaves to inform cabin 11 of Percy, as instructed by Chiron. We then get to know more about her when Percy arrives at cabin 11. When we first see her, she’s reading an architecture book. When we get introduced to Luke, Percy notices she blushes, introducing Annabeth maybe having strong feelings towards him. It’s these little details that flesh out her character early. After they talk for a bit, they’re interrupted by Clarisse, and Percy is taken to the bathroom, with Annabeth following behind. This interaction between Annabeth and Clarisse shows the Ares/Athena rivalry between two characters, it sets up who’s up against who in capture the flag, and Percy’s bathroom scene is watched by Annabeth because she had a reason to be there. In the book, she “watched (Percy getting an attempted swirlie) through her fingers.” When Percy makes the pipes burst, she’s soaked too, and shocked, questioning him on how did he did it. In the show, Annabeth is kind of just… there. She says she’s been “watching to see if something like this would happen”, but I feel like that just came off as creepy rather than wisdom-like. Then, in the book, when it’s revealed that Percy is a child of a big three, everyone kneels, and Annabeth comments on how this situation IS NOT GOOD. She knows the sacred oath has now been broken by Poseidon as well. In the show she’s kind of like “ooohhh cool.” And the rushed writing immediately switches on questing time, leaving no room for explaining how outcasted Percy felt when he had to live in his own cabin, and how the other kids started to treat him differently. We also don’t get ANY training scenes with Luke. I can see cutting out the disarming scene, since there already is a bunch of clues already to who Percy’s dad is, and him getting powerful from the water bottle wasn’t completely necessary. Although, having no training scenes at all doesn’t set up Luke as “the best swordsman in camp” as we know him to be, and doesn’t at all train Percy in the art of swiordfighting. Like, this boy has to fight ARES in the last episode. Sure, the water will make him powerful, but if he just suddenly learns to block and parry the literal GOD OF WAR’s attacks, it’s gonna feel a little Gary Stu-ish (Gary Stu is the male counterpart of a Mary sue).

Liked this episode the best. Acting was so much better in this episode. But yeah, young Percy talking to his mom in the pool sounded weird. "Just breathe, that's what you tell me." He sounded manipulative there not sincere. I did like Sally's impatience and frustration, "I paid for this..." meaning the swimming lessons were a big financial burden to her and he's not helping. And I was really looking forward to Percy's line, "Isn't echidna an ant eater?" Which made Echidna mad, "I hate Australia!" Which made me LOL reading the book. Did I miss this line in the episode?

You're right that that line isn't in the episode. Generally they've been staying away from making the exact same jokes as the book, unless it's something visual like the Minotaur wearing underpants, since that's maybe even better than having to imagine it.

It kind of changed book by book. Both pronunciations are technically correct. Certain characters also emphasize the hard a sound more than others. As a long time Percy fan, I believe that the characters are massively underutilized in terms of drive. It just doesn't feel like they have the type of motivation that they had in the books. For example Annabeths drive to get on a quest to prove herself is missing, doubled with her love of architecture. Grover is missing the fact that he wants his searchers license so he has to complete this quest to get it and Percy wants to save his mother from the underworld. We cannot connect to these characters because the fundamental reasons for them to even do this is just missing, even just from a storytelling perspective, let alone the adaptation perspective from a book that already did these things better. Really sad tbh but I have been watching with my mum and she seems to enjoy so it's a win in my book.

This episode was definitely an improvement. The bickering on the train at the beginning actually got a full laugh out of me, which I wasn't expecting. Some of the dialogue is stilted, and I'm still waiting for the chemistry of the group to come together, but I felt like we're going in the right direction. Maybe they just weren't given enough time to meld before filming started, and they felt each other out on the fly, because now, in the promo stuff, they're acting like best friends, which set my expectations too high.

i think there is a weird implication that after the gang has 'escaped' echidna, she gets a more competent child to take on the task, as she had chastised the baby for being to jumpy or whatever
also one thing that easier to do in the tv format, that i actually really enjoyed, was the beginning of that chapter starts with a flashback to Percy being comforted by his mom, and they have something they said that i cant recall, it might've been 'just breathe' either way, Eudora repeats it to indicate that she is friendly/aligned with Poseidon, but then yeah it also fits together to also indicate to him that he can breathe underwater, which is something he learns there in the books too, but this also kind of has this broader aspect of Poseidon is aware of Percy and his mom's sayings (even more so given they were IN A POOL), so he hasn't been completely distant, just not present

The next episode focuses on the Ares side quest, so, it would be natural for them to open with them fighting Echidna and the chimera. Maybe her calm façade will break when her new baby is slain and she’ll morph into her other form?

And finally, I found it weird that Annabeth said “a temple is a temple” since both in Greek religion and in mythology, Gods usually don’t share sacred spaces, but ESPECIALLY invoking Poseidon in a ‘temple’ to Athena, of all Goddesses, (“its earthquake proof, so Poseidon can’t hurt it“) feels like something none of the group would think about, let alone suggest, ESPECIALLY Her daughter.

On th acropolis of athens there is a temple dedicated to both athena n poseidon. Both in th riordanverse n in reality. It's called 'erecteion'

But maybe that's how Annabeth insulted and humiliated Athena... maybe Percy's assumption about Medusa's head was wrong and that's what it was really about...

@@Gradestar10I’m aware of the Erechtheion, and it’s far from the only example of sacred spaces dedicated to multiple Gods, but even the Erechtheion is a sacred space dedicated TO Poseidon’s power (technically, the Erechtheion is just the spot where the trident hit) in the middle of a larger area dedicated to Athena, it’s a frequent theme in Greek and Roman polytheism that Gods can have sacred places in the middle of another, the story of the founding of the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus is another example. Artemis, Zeus, and Hera had shrines on top of the Acropolis as well and the larger sacred area included more. And since the Athenians also recognized Poseidon in that His salt spring was what gave them access to the ocean and the most powerful Greek navy, they built a shrine in the spot the trident hit the ground, but you still probably wouldn’t want to be invoking Poseidon in the actual temple to Athena, especially in the more myth literal world of the Riordin universe.

The thing about Echidna teaching the Chimera to hunt could be because the Chimera has been dead thousands of years so it could’ve forgotten how to hunt. Edit: Similar to how after a long coma, people have to go through physical therapy to help them be able to move and use their muscles again.

    • @Gradestar10
      @Gradestar10 6 месяцев назад +1

More likely it's a nod to th books, where echidna tells percy that zeus rarely allows her to test a hero against 1 of her brood, which is odd since, in mythology, zeus allowed echidna n her children to live after typhoon's defeat on purpose to serve as a challenge to future generations of heroes n demigods

@@Gradestar10Could also somehow be some sort of child/relative to the original Chimera (hence not having a mane) and still be learning how to hunt.

I definitely enjoyed the talking scenes more in this episode than in the previous ones, and I did like most of the character interactions.

I basically have the same problems with this show as you do, especially with the speed of everything and the length of each episode.
What they did with echidna, having her drop hints and then anabeth figuring out who she is, you said they could have done that with medusa.
What if they gave the actress long, sharp fake nails to wear to enthsize bronze talens, or when shes alone with percy, have him notice cracks on her skin but have medusa make an excuse about needing more moisturiser.
The only part I know i liked about her design other than the cgi snake hair is her hat. It's way more useful than the wrap and sunglasses the movie had in terms of practicality.

With the whole “Athena was mad about Medusa’s head” thing, I’m hoping that Annabeth made the wrong conclusion and there’s another explanation to be revealed later on

Personally, I liked this episode but thought it was weird that Chimera's depicted as a regular looking person, albeit with the Force, and the Chimera reminded me of the parrot-tiger thing from the Croods movies.

I just recently noticed that the Immortals cards look different now. I think they look absolutely amazing, I will miss the old designs as they had a certain charm that I liked but these ones I can undoubtedly say look fantastic. I love the more Greek stylization for the Greek cards. I cannot wait to see perhaps the new Norse styled Norse cards and the Egyptian style Egyptian cards, etc. TheMythologyGuy, you and your team are doing excellent in bringing to life a game that I have been patiently waiting for in giddy glee. Keep being awesome.

This episode was definitely an improvement and gives me hope for the rest of the series. And I agree that Percy finally started feeling like Percy. Besides looking cool, that sword fake out was nice because I thought he was going to actually give it to her and forget that it always comes back to him and it would be a dumb moment. But it turned out much better. I do hope we see the Nereid a bit better in the next episode though. Couldn't really see her and considering how cool the Dryad looked, I was excited to see her.
