I've honestly never been a fan of the "Medusa was an innocent victim" version of her story. Especially because that version didn't even come from Greece and yet it's the only version people want to validate these days. I was happy to see it not be used when I read the books and so it was all the more infuriating to see it being used in the show. It's a personal preference for sure but it's just how I feel

HEAVILY disagree. While this does come from someone who didn't have much opinion on Medusa's story, I feel like this version for the themes established in Riordan's books. He made a series which explored themes of bullying and this version of the story fit SO much better into those themes. If they did this part exactly like the book, it would just be a generic monster fight, whereas here, Both Medusa and the Furies have actual characters and it fits Riordan's world way better. I'm sorry it didn't do it for you, hope next episode changes your mind

It seems implied to me that Medusa's true story is unknown, hence the multiple versions. Medusa says one thing, and Annabeth accuses her of lying. Then Medusa claims Athena's version was a lie. Both Medusa and Athena would naturally want to portray themselves as good guys, so for all we know they both could be lying.

Personally… I really dont understand how people watched episode 3 and came away thinking Medusa was an innocent victim or anything like that. She’s acts kind at, then tells her version of what happened to her; lures Percy in with her tale and then immediately pivots to “hey I can kill your friends for you” and when we go down to her basement it’s filled with innocent people that she’s murdered… what exactly about that is supposed to redemptive or “innocent victim” it’s very telling that she only keeps the statues of monsters outside, she’s putting up a literal false front. She’s very clearly a villain, sure she had a tragic past but she doesnt do anything to redeem herself. That whole shpeal about “never being bullied again” is thrown completely out the window when we see Uncle Ferdinand’s statue.
Edit: to be clear I’m not super thrilled with the series so far, I’m holding off judgement till the finale because plenty of excellent shows had really rocky beginning ie: Clone Wars show or Gotham. I believe this property has potential.

Sure, but Athena turned her and treated her like a monster. If you get treated like a monster too long, you eventually become one. That’s just how it is, and she may have been an innocent victim before becoming a monster. Like Sally says: ‘’Not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster.’’

I was really sad to see the changes in the bus scene to be honest. The part where Percy desides not to run but to stay and help out his friends even though that would put himself in danger is soooo important. It is the first intance where that part of him, which in the end is his fatal flaw, really comes out in the books.

he has this same chance in medusas house. they split that storyline to both annabeth and percy and both gave them a chance to go back and help their friends. it furthered both of their storylines perfectly and strengthened the trio. don’t know what there is to complain about.

I see what they did and I see how it worked for the show, but honestly I don't think that should have been necessary.
The idea Annabeth would consider, even for the smallest moment, to betray the group feels so alien to me.
The group still comes together and fights together the way it is done in the book. Annabeth and Grover, by sending Percy away, try to protect Percy kind of in the same way he's trying to do when returning.
But overall I feel like the show will not meet my hopes and expectations, they are too high. I love the books and relied so much on them growing up. I find myself finding little moments in the show that are like the books and I love it, but overall the characters seem too different to really enjoy the show as an adaptation.
I will watch it to the end and will have a lot of fun, because it's a good show. But for my Percy Jackson I will stay with the books.😊

    My issues:
    - None of the fights are allowed any room to breathe. They end through clumsy accidents within seconds, all the while the monsters have full-on conversations with the people they’re trying to kill. What the hell is this change?
    - Percy has been written to be so wooden and self-inserty that he might as well just be called “Y/N”. He isn’t allowed to have time to show any emotions about all of these betrayals and attacks. His few snarky lines are said in such a quiet and emotionless way that you almost think they’re being said at a funeral.
    - Grover is completely faithless. He lies to Percy constantly and they almost never have any meaningful conversations. I’m told that Grover is Percy’s best friend and that Percy trusts him, but how am I supposed to believe that when Grover is constantly lying to him and when I never get to see them together? They’ve also taken Grover’s entire reason to go on the Quest away, as he wasn’t unconscious when bringing Percy across the Camp boundary and therefore shouldn’t be at risk of having his license request denied by the Council of Cloven Elders. Heck, even the Thalia reveal with Grover is given to Luke and Annabeth and ditched before any meaningful conversations or emotions can be had. By now, we should’ve had at least ONE SCENE of Grover comforting Percy or cheering him up or opening up to him. Instead, I feel like Grover will betray Percy at the end and revive Kronos himself.
    - Annabeth is the worst of the three. She’s got this entire show up her butt and has since her first appearance. I’m told that she’s the most formidable demigod alive and that she’s “different” from everyone else. Even the monsters talk her up! Meanwhile, all she ever does is act as stoically as possible and treat Percy like a tool. Book Annabeth was snippy, but she had energy to her and bickered with Percy on equal grounds. In this show, Annabeth is casted as Percy’s superior and the show constantly reminds us of this by making Percy incompetent and making him act like a clueless chump the whole time. They even had Alecto bow to Annabeth by speaking calmly with her as if she was Alecto’s equal, with Annabeth being so scummy as to ponder over betraying Percy. Why is Riordan trying so hard to change such a charismatic and dynamic character into a stoic and angsty Girlboss?
    - Despite us being so many episodes in, I still haven’t gotten much insight into who our three main characters are. None of their motives have been adequately explored. Annabeth’s dream to impress her mom and her feelings of being abandoned haven’t been alluded to at all. Haven’t even gotten anything about her seeing Luke as family and loving him. Grover’s insecurity and goal to find Pan hasn’t been touched on. Percy’s loyalty and kindness is basically nonexistent. These are not the characters that I remember.
    - Why is Alecto such a big deal in this story? Why was Medusa? Both were low-class monsters who were done away with at the beginning of the quest? They didn’t teach important lessons in the book, and instead were used to develop our protagonists. Maybe if this had been done in the show, I could like it more.
    - No humor at all. In a book filled with such charisma and humor, I have yet to see any energy or fun in this story. The best we got was with Dionysus, who I actually liked a lot. He seemed to have energy and he didn’t feel like he was thinking about the Holocaust the entire time he was speaking.

which I think is also not book accurate as in the book the mist rather changes how monsters etc really look like and don't just show a disguise of that monster, which makes sense, because how are the gonna do this with Mrs O'Leary in the fifth book when she walks through New York? Its not like she has a human form to turn into or anything.. And just turning her into a normal dog doesn't really work out either, because if I remember correctly there were scenes in the book where monsters were disguised by the mist, but mortals still got scared when they saw them. An example could be the bridge scene with the chimera, if I remember correctly.

Ehhh..., the attack on the bus scene in the TV series was still done very weirdly... Like, why didn't any of the other passengers react at all to Annabeth vanishing out of thin air when she put on her Yankees baseball cap in the middle of the aisle? Why didn't any of the passengers react to three kids breaking open a window in the back of the bus and hopping through it instead of just exiting through the front of the bus? Why didn't any of the passengers react to one of the Furies flying in and bursting through a window like a literally missile lol? I mean, The Mist was already a pretty overpowered thing in the original books, but it seems to be even *more* overpowered in the TV series than it was in the original books where it can just make everything completely invisible instead of just warping the appearance of things lol.

Writing novels and writing scripts are 2 different animals I feel

    • @corenlavolpe6143
      @corenlavolpe6143 6 месяцев назад +58

      Very much so.
For scripts, it's all about dialogue and stage direction. For novels it's about describing the world and characters and plot with well crafted prose that flows well for readers.
I did a lot of script writing growing up (as a hobby) and in a way it's easier because you don’t have to describe everything and be super precise. But at the same time writing novels gives you full control over how the story is presented. I moved to writing in a novel style and it's hard for me since I have such a visual imagination and it's difficult to put the image into words.
One very relevant point is that you need to give exposition in a very different way in scripts than in novels. Characters spouting exposition is more blatantly bad in shows and movies, in novels I find it less egregious. Or in novels you can just explain it in the prose. But you don't hear prose in a show so a lot of the time it translate into a character spouting the lore relevant to the immediate plot.

Not at all, if you're skilled enough and have done the work you can easily do the translation from point A to point b, from manuscripts to screenplays. The fact that it's not being done well shows that the team isn't very good. Which isn't surprising, because Disney's had a really bad problem with their writing in world building for quite some time now. Far more of an issue in the MCU, but there are a lot of glaring issues. Hopefully things will be solved and filled in over time, but based on marvel and Disney's history I'm not all that optimistic. This is honestly an issue within Hollywood in general with a lot of the writers just not having any real seemingly actual knowledge on how world building or scriptwriting works. I do both and I can tell you it's a lot easier if you know how both work, but someone on this team is not translating this properly.

I think this works. I actually liked the Medusa scene even if it differed from the books (and this is coming from someone who read and loved the books from the age of 6 and reread them along with half of Heroes of Olympus earlier this year, also reading the books alongside the show with a friend of mine), it was different, and I see them driving in some minorly different directions with certain aspects of the story, but I think it feeds into the story they're writing really well thus far, and it is in the same spirit of the books.
Medusa is a monster, but she didn't start that way (whether she was horny on main or assaulted in the temple she was still a human being that probably wouldn't eat small children as a pastime), and regardless of what Athena may have intended when she cursed her or what short term effects that may have had (I still think in this version it was a punishment), it's led to nothing but suffering for her and she resents Athena for that. Lying about her views on Athena to Annabeth is an attempt to drive a wedge between her and Percy so she can isolate them.
Also, who, when trying to bait people into a trap through persuasion, wouldn't try to garner sympathy and sew division between their victims? Sure if you take the dialogue at face value it seems confusing, but it's blatantly obvious that she's trying to manipulate these kids into turning on eachother and trying to get them into a position where she can hurt them. Even the honesty about who she is is probably a ploy to gain trust and simultaneously sew dissent among the party. Which worked initially. She's probably been doing this so long that she enjoys this part of the hunt.
Ultimately I think this episode is still part of the setup for the dynamic between the characters, and towards the end of the episode we're starting to see a bit of the payoff. They're trusting eachother more and are beginning to build a strong friendship because now they've not only started to be honest with one another, they've proven that they can resist the temptation to betray eachother and have eachother's backs when it matters.
This episode was a pretty strong improvement over the previous two and, seeing where they might be going with this, I only think that things will get better from here. It will be a little different, and yeah, some scenes need room to breathe, but the spirit of the story is definitely there and I like what I'm seeing thus far.

It would've been a much cooler looking kill in the TV series if Annabeth's Yankees baseball cap immediately fell off as soon as Percy cut Medusa's head off and we actually got to see Medusa's decapitated head hit the ground with green slime/blood pouring out of it instead of red blood to keep it PG.

Medusa is only saying it’s a gift from a certain point of view. The true intent behind it is doubled down on by Annabeth in the scene, where she says “it WAS a curse”

Meanwhile I feel like the best acing is always a bit too fast and I really feel like some of these new additions weren’t really necessary (like Luke explaining the concept of kleios which I don’t believe ever featured in the books).
I’m happy that the general plot line follows the books closer than the movie and I really like Walker’s performance as Percy, but most of the other actors have been a bit of a miss for me. I had especially high hopes for Annabeth’s actress because she’s one of my favorite characters and her romance with Percy is one of my favorite love stories, but I feel like their chemistry needs to improve a lot for me to believe in it.
And it’s a really weird experience because my friends all keep gushing about how great it is and really seem to love it. So I’m left wondering if I just came into this with the wrong mindset or if I set my expectations way too high.

One could perhaps say that Annabeth being Athena's daughter and having known and been awear of this world for 5 years would give her the knowledge to instantly put 2 and 2 together (Aunty M+Statues=Madusa), and perhaps expecially so when it's one of the monsters out there who has a grudge against her mother, seeing how in the books Annabeth is well awear that all the spiders finding her aren't just accidental/happenstance. Plus, Madusa is one of the more well known/easily recognisable creatures/monsters, so Annabeth having learned enough from age 7 to 12 to immidetally know from the clues right away isn't too far out there for me. And if the show gets more seasons, we could very well see those "slowly connecting the dots and figuring things out" scenes during the parts of the story where Annabeth isn't with the group, or have her participate during those "connecting the dots" scenes regarding lesser known/popular creatures/monsters.
And the bus and fountain scenes, aren't covering up/obscuring those events for regular people what the mist is there for? How can they react to something when they don't know that anything unuseal is going on? Cause I just assumed that's why they (monsters/creatures) don't mind going after them (the trio) in public. Other monsters/creatures doesn't mind later on in the books/series, so I don't see it as such a "betrayl"/lore-break that the fury doesn't in the show either. Anyway, that's just my two cents on the matter.

Like a modern take on the myth that deals with issues similar to it.
She was willing to help the trio, but then Annabeth's pride caused her to victim blame Medusa for the sake of her mother and she turned on Percy for refusing her "help". I feel extremely bad for Percy's lack of competence. It is taken away either for an exposition that is proceeded by other characters (Grover telling who Dionysus is instead of Percy figuring it out by himself) or omitted for making a cheap tension scene of "they do not tell him anything". I loved when he figured out what the issue was with the quest (that something was stolen) or that he cannot wear Luke's shoes all by himself not only gives us the evidence that Percy is very good at analyzing information at hand, even if he lacks knowledge, but is also knowing a lot from Greek myths which allows him to use that knowledge in practice. That even though he might not be child of Athena, he has his moments to shine because of his knowledge. But we have yet to see it in the show.

I am 100% with you on this show. It really feels like the vision they have for it is not a "faithful adaptation" but instead a "retelling" which is just not what I'm watching it for. None of the characters feel similar to their book counterparts except for maybe luke and clarisse. There are clear pacing issues, a lot of which stem from scenes that weren't in the books being added. There are clear budgetary and maybe even rating constraint issues as well. The medusa fight really showed this as it was clear they were trying to find a way to kill medusa without having to show the chopped head which is why he doesn't just swing when she's next to him and he knows where she is and why they keep the invisibility hat on her the entire time. The bus scene felt really weird, annabeth gives up the element of surprise which even the narration said was the one advantage they could get, the mortals don't react even to the bus shaking or three kids opening a bus window.
About Annabeth's casting, if her look was the one thing that was problematic about the show version of the character, then we wouldn't have any problems. The problem stems from the fact that her delivery only feels good around twice. Maybe it's because of direction or the new direction they're taking the character, but lines don't feel like they're being delivered how they should in the context of the scene or how book annabeth would deliver them either.
It feels like what we were promised with this show is just not being delivered and it really sucks to see as a percy jackson fan.

I thought this verson of Medusa actually fit very well with the story. The whole point of her was to drive some distrust not only into the characters but also into the Gods. And if she really did have a grudge against Annabeth and Athena then its not a bad plan to drive a wedge between them. I think she was lying about her true motive, she clearly wasnt helping the group. She was making them distrust and turn against each other to split them up. I think they cleverly used the different mythologies to oscure the character's motives and to make it seem like it was the Gods at fault, but the truth was that she was just the monster people know her as. Percy's mother might have been wrong about her and the point is that she is the one person that Percy puts absolute faith in, and it steered him wrong. I might be wrong but that's seems to be the angle in this episode. This is supported by her wearing the vale for so long, its meant to hide the character and keep her mysterious. You dont know if she's trustworthy or not.

You know why Lord of the Rings is a good adaptation and film(s)? Because it had very little studio involvement. Production companies thought it would flop and it took awhile to even find a studio to take it, so they left it alone and allowed it to be a passion project. And it shows! It also knew what things to keep and what things needed to change to make it work as a movie.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a good example of a film that a book fan, like myself, and/or a book purist could take issue with some things in it. (You never ride a Talking Beast unless it's an emergency or they consent, Aslan doesn't give them their titles when they become kings and queens - the Narnians go, etc) But, it hits the major story beats, the characters feel like their book counterparts, and it's fun to watch. The issue with the following films in the series are that the divide between book and film became wider, characters started acting contrary to their counterparts, and eventually, it became "in name only".

What made Annabeth's character ruined for me is that she wasn't aware that Athena might be a terrible person. What make the Demigods in the books complexed and relatable is that they are aware of the terrible things their parents have done yet still strive for their attention and love. It's relatable because there are kids with crappy parents and actively know they are crappy and yet still want to be noticed by them. It's why naruto acted like a punk despite the village treating him badly before because he wanted to be noticed. What makes it worst is that Annabeth was aware of all of the horrible things the gods did because she does the most research. Also they keep saying she's like the best warrior and demigod ever despite not going on any quests and not doing anything besides winning a few years of capture the flag. Like Luke fought a dragon and Heracles is the most notorious monster slayer and bested a god in combat when he was still a demigod. Yet Annabeth is considered the best without actually winning a single fight so far we've seen. And no the medusa thing doesn't count because A. She had help from two people and B. She didn't even kill her Percy did.

Annabeth compared her and Percy's relationship to their parents relationship the entire book. She looked to her mother for guidance for everything early on. It was LATER that she was like "Percy and Luke are right, fuck the gods" and wants to fist-fight Hera for stealing her boyfriend. Also, she thinks her mom wants her while her dad chose her stepmom "over her" and her stepmom HATES Annabeth, so, as a child forced to chose between which parent she wants to stay with after the divorce, she chose the one she thinks wants her and acts the good daughter until such a time as she becomes her own person apart from her parents.

I actually quite liked this portrayal of Medusa, it did differ from the books quite a lot, but i still liked this version; which i will be the first to mention it might very well be a bi product of Medusa being one of my favorite monsters in greek myths so i really wanted to like her, or because i was reading into it to much or something, but i kept getting the feeling that Medusa in this was not bad or good, more neutral and was more just being very manipulative to get what she want, which is why she seems to change so much from scene to scene, she is just saying what they would want to hear to try and get them on her side as a way to get back at the gods, sense she hated the gods, not the kids; but the was trying to turn percy aline to her side because Annabeth and Grover were being very wary of her and were saying to not trust her or right up accusing her, so she gave up on them and focused in Percy sense he was actually listening to her and not fully treating her like a monster; then when that failed she was like fine then i will get back at your parents a different way, and if i am remembering right (i will have to watch the scene again to be sure) but when they entered her lair she announces something along the lines of "fine then i will just send your statues to your parents, that should send a message". Overall the whole scene was way to short, but i loved how you could not really tell who's side she was going to be on and how manipulative she was.

Regarding Medusa, I think when you said Hesiod, you meant Ovid. I never got the impression from Hesiod that she was evil. The word "Gorgon" can be translated "dreadful" but that also doesn't necessarily mean evil. Very early, Gorgon imagery could be found on coinage and placed above doors to ward off evil.
Hesiod really doesn't describe what Gorgons looks like, but he says she mated with Poseidon. I don't know if he ever mated with ugly monsters or only pretty things so there may be something there.

The scene from ep 3 with Percy and Grover is definitely a set-up. I could feel the distrust of Percy to Grover (due to the betrayal in ep 1), they even inserted the last part of the oracle in between the scene. He even said it himself that either one of his friends will betray him (he himself expect it's either Grover or Annabeth) . It feels like they're steering the viewers to Grover as the betrayer just to make the final reveal more impactful. I kinda get what they're going for but the whole thing doesn't flow as smoothly and leave many awkward gaps between them.

Honestly, I really liked the sort-of retcon they did for Medusa. While, of course, I loved how they did it in the books, I think it was equally interesting in the show. I like how Medusa’s immediately revealed (not a gradual reveal) and that she plays an important role in not only progressing the quest but also the characters and their individual qualities (i.e. bringing them closer, revealing relationships and ideologies, etc.). While i totally understand not enjoying this, especially as a book reader (I myself love the books and can totally understand the jarring nature of this retcon), I like how Rick and the writers of this show are taking a different approach to the story while remaining faithful to the books in such a way that the story is better fit for the TV medium. I mentioned in your previous vid (in a comment) that there’s a lot of differences in writing a show and writing a book, and I think it’s been done quite well so far. She'll literally turn you to stone and the kids have no reason to think she wouldn't do the same to them. It's so unrealistic of them. I don't think it makes sense at all. I think adapting to a TV show gives room to add more but changing things isn't okay. It's not the same. And I don't think it's Rick I think it's Disney🤷 the problem is the book sold millions of copies because people loved the books exactly as they were. Why change what's already good and already works? I think aside from mischaracterizations and the pacing problems I thought it was pretty good.
I think on the mischaracterizations it's less of a problem than it's being made to be especially because on a TV show it makes sense they would want more conflict between the interests of the characters. I feel as though while being a completely warranted opinion, you are too focused on wanting them to be identical to the books: you mentioned grover being told off all the time and I would also point out that in the books he was also constantly being shut down and shy, Percy wanting grover on the trip is a characterization of their friendship which is also shown in the first episode in the beginning as well as in the scene where they share lunch together, and the genuine look of shock on Percy's face when grover betrays him. Thus, even the betrayal scene is evidence of their friendship through the clear surprise of it.
Again I completely understand why you have the thoughts on it which you do however I also feel as though these arguments are a little too nit-picky.

Animation lends itself to narrative storytelling with fantasy or scifi elements better than live action and you can make the characters look exactly as they're described in the books. There are a few things I want to give counter-points to.
One; the Furies. The Furies are not that bad, because it’s The Mist. Regular people do not see monsters, you know that. So when someone is trying to get past her on the bus, they aren’t reacting because they only see an old woman, they don’t see the wings, they are rushing and confused; that’s why it’s shot like that, so show that the Furie was powerful, and that no one was there to help them. All the adults were scattering, and they didn’t see the danger.
Next, Annabeth; I think Rick has been trying to make Annabeth a bit more thorny, because I think that’s how he’s always seen her. How I remember the first book was that they were bickering a lot, but it seemed more playful because there’s this sorta childhood crush thing going on. I think Rick is trying to move that crush part to the potential next “book”, slowing the development a bit more, and also making Annabeth look more prickly then she did, as she’s trying to replicate her mom who has always been a rival of Poseidon.
After that, we have Grover’s song. I think it’s supposed to be cringe. That’s literally the point. Grover is using distraction to stop them from arguing, and it works! He’s akward about it, but it’s probably something he was taught to do to diffuse tension; be a goofball and everyone calms down. But he’s not perfect at it, so it WORKS, but it just sounds cringy. He even says when they stop him that it’s a tactic to encourage compromise.
I think a lot of the current issues you are having stem from a combination of blink and you miss it details, or a lack of understanding kids.
The three of them are acting like kids would; brash, impertinent, stubborn, cringy.
The book rarely had that. They are supposed to be children, so faults in their character may actually be the choice by the author.
    Here, let me just-
The One Piece live action had to change a lot in order to get itself to work. One of the things it did was make Luffy less simple and more emotional, and a lot less selfish.
Luffy’s cartoonish selfishness works in anime/manga because it’s a cartoon, but in live action, something supposed to GET ACROSS THE SERIES TO NEW AUDIENCES, you have to change a few things.
And Medusa… I already said my peace a while ago, but it boils down to the fact that monsters are made up of stories, and Medusa is a character that has gone through so many changes that making her character in the series be “what’s truth and what’s lies” and be about “perspective” while still having her be a threat is, in my opinion, a fine change.

Really, there were only two things I hated about this episode.
Firstly, Annabeth saying they don’t vote. A daughter of Athena, patron goddess of Athens, the birth place of Democracy, said they couldn’t vote.
But more to the point, Medusa was god damn terrible. It’s cool using Medusa’s head to defeat Alecto (not sure if that would work, but The Furies in this universe are killable), but her presentation was so underwhelming. There’s more to Medusa than snakes for hair, and it’s even in the books. Green skin, wings on her bank, claws made of bronze, this should look cool and intimidating. Also, I know the books used it, but can we ever get a piece of Greek media that doesn’t use Ovids god damn retelling. In the original stories, Medusa and her sisters was the daughters of Keto and Phorcys, something Riordan brought up in The Heroes of Olympus books, pretty much the only retcon from the books I can remember.

All the complication and realistic humanity of Medusa as a character also had to come through visually - even in the nest of snakes coiled around her head. "We never really wanted the snakes to give a performance. They weren't going to stare at Percy and hiss in unison; that started to feel like you're in a cartoon," Steinberg said. "There was something interesting about the idea that part of the immortal torture of Medusa is that it's really annoying to have snakes on your head. You want to feel the sense of how uncomfortable that must be. So that requires them to be messy and to feel real."

I absolutely agree with you for the most part. IF YOU CANT MAKE IT RIGHT THEN DONT MAKE IT AT ALL 👏 I don’t expect a 1:1 adaptation of the books, thats not how it works but i expect the changes to be thought through, true to the story and the whole vibe and have a purpose in story other than plot convenience. Look at Lotr for example: is it 100% true to the books? Absolutely not. Is it one of the best movie adaptations ever made? Yes, yes indeed. And there are other examples: The queens gambit, Harry Potter, catching fire, the perks of being a wallflower, Scott pilgrim, infinity war… I could go on. There are scenes that are just completely unnecessary and take away tension like Annabeth talking to Alecto. The scenes are either completely rushed like medusas reveal or the fight sequences while the rest is kinda dragging with the endless dialogues that I think were created to build up tension or emotion but just complete miss the mark (like sallys monologue whilst literally being chased by a Minotaur or the whole scene talking to medusa and again Alecto). So far the show has been kinda boring I must say and I think it’s due to the weird pacing, heartfelt moments, lack of action and real challenges (they kill off every challenge thrown their way in like 5 seconds, it’s anticlimactic and it doesn’t leave a lot of room for character and skill development). And so far I really think the show is lacking a bit attention to detail like grovers crutches or the fact that cellphones attract monsters or that Grover is a vegetarian because he can talk and relates to animals or the monster donut shops… these are just little details, that of course don’t matter for the overall story but just make it feel like a own world with own lore.
The one point I disagree is that I personally think grovers casting is on point and i love his acting so far. That scene with the spring roll (?) was one of the only times I laughed in this episode. I just think he is really poorly written but i obviously don’t blame the actor for that. It’s like he’s only there for information dump and some comedic relief. And I hate that they used grovers past as a tool to create conflict between the characters. The way Annabeth holds it against him is just so out of character. In the books PERCY FIGURES IT OUT by himself (surprise surprise, they don’t let him figure this out either) and it isn’t used as a attack but Percy asks Grover about it out of curiosity. Grover confesses and they all cheer him up, annabeth tells him that she probably would be dead as well if it wasn’t for him. I hate that they turned this heartfelt moment into a dumb tool to force conflict.
Sorry I just needed to vent. I love the universe, red every book countless times and I’m just really sad and disappointed. :(

I am really liking the show as a non book reader. I can also understand a lot of the complaints I’ve seen from other reactors regarding the pacing and lack of action scenes.
But everything else I disagree with. I love the chemistry between the trio - not sure if it’s mainly because I’ve watched so many of their interviews, but it’s great to me. I also disagree with your take on the Annabeth actress, from what people have said - she isn’t suppose to be extremely likable in the beginning and is suppose to be a semi “know it all and maybe even annoying” it’s also how I found hermione in the first movie - she grew to be more likable as the movie went on. Also, even Rick himself made a comment on threads about annabeth knowing it was Medusa almost immediately since they said she’s “always 6 steps ahead” but you can also admit a lot of people don’t like the actress because of racism. It won’t kill you to admit it. It’s a fact that you can overlook or say isn’t everyone because she doesn’t embody what readers imagined her to be, but neither was the movie one until they made her blonde in the second movie. But that little girl has been called the n word and monkey and other derogatory names you as a white male will never understand. But I thank you for at least acknowledging she’s a little girl and you didn’t want to be mean in your critic. I wish others who want to criticize (which everyone has their right to do) are a little kinder. She has time to improve if you can’t see it just yet.

As a book reader, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you. I really wish I wouldn't have to, but while the actors chemistry off-screen might be great, there doesn't happen much positive of it on-screen (at least not in my memory). Also, I don't blame it on the actors. They can only do as much the script allows.
So I'd say, that the writing is the problem. The few good moments they have together in the books were completely cut out until now, their conflict is overblown and has some really unusual characteristics to it.
For example, when they are in the bus and Percy wants to hold a vote on what to do, Annabeth is like "No, we don't vote, we do what I say". Annabeth, a daughter of Athena, the patron goddess of the city, where they invented the very concept of democracy, is against that? And not only this, you don't even have to be a child of Athena in order to see how that makes you unsympathetic and bossy. By any chance, your team partners will be more likely to be uncooperative with such a behaviour of getting your own plans through exactly as you want. She doesn't try to convince them with good arguments, which would get her the nickname "Wise girl"; instead, she calls the idea of calling Camp Half-Blood cowardly. Asking for support, when you're confronted with the three enforcers of Hades himself, is no cowardice. It's reasonable.

I think what they're driving at with Medusa is that elements of each of her stories were true, but ultimately now, after having been abused and/or abandoned by the gods for so long, she's become the monster everyone believes her to be. Whether she was in the wrong or not initially doesn't matter now.
Lying about her views on her curse and Athena to Annabeth *in the presence of Percy* is an attempt to drive a wedge between her and Percy so she can isolate them.
Additionally, when she says "you could have chosen to save your mother instead of doing your father's bidding," she's probably referring to his implied refusal of her offer to get the party out of the way. Still trying to manipulate him into betraying his friends.
Ultimately I think this episode is still part of the setup for the dynamic between the characters, and towards the end of the episode we're starting to see a bit of the payoff. They're trusting eachother more and are beginning to build a mutual friendship because now they've not only started to be honest with one another, they've proven that they can resist the temptation to betray eachother and have eachother's backs when it matters.
This episode was a pretty strong improvement over the previous two and, seeing where they might be going with this, I only think that things will get better from here. It will be a little different, and yeah, some scenes need room to breathe, but the spirit of the story is definitely there and I like what I'm seeing thus far.

Completely agree. While the movie may have been more TEXTUALLY accurate to the scene from the book, the show is more THEMATICALLY accurate for all the reasons you're saying as well as setting up the kids questioning the gods later down the road and Luke being seen for who he was and...all the important themes the book series plays with in later installments as Rick became a better writer and more interested in exploring different ideas.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only who's observed these things about the show. I agree with you virtually 100% about everything you've said so far.
I think we got our first real glimpse at their chemistry in Ep3, so hopefully it continues to get better. Annabeth's actor in particular feels so close to believable but falls short. It seems like if they just spent an extra month or something working with her, it'd make a big difference. She and others just don't come off as their characters; it very much feels like actors saying and doing script things.
I'm very disappointed with the action scenes of Ep3. Everything is resolved two seconds after the situation is presented. I love problem-solving and seeing how others problem-solve, and I remember the books doing a great job building tension and offering interesting insights into the characters through it. You get absolutely none of that in this series. They just figure it out immediately and we have no added understanding of their thought process or values. It's also a real shame because the Medusa scene in the books was one of my favorites in the series. Percy being pushed to figure out the truth of who she actually was and how he could defeat her -- these things helped him grow (in more ways than one) and made his victory feel earned.

My main issue with the stiry all happens because they did not spend enough time at Camp Half Blood. B3fore Percy even went on his quest, it was clear that he had found some family with the campers (especially Hermes cabin). Here’s something that annoyed me in this episode: at the very beginning Luke gives him the flying shoes. Then they’re not mentioned again, but we see Percy carrying them around everywhere. Like, out of anything he grabs when they run away from the bus, he grabs the shoes, not his backpack or supplies, but the shoes that he hasn’t put on. Then out of no where, boom, Grover’s wearing them. Why? Obviously if you read the books it’s explained that Percy shouldn’t wear them because Zeus might strike him down or whatever, but that is not mentioned once in the books. It’s just Percy dragging along some big ass shoes box instead of wearing them, and then Grover’s suddenly got them with no explanation as to why. There’s not even a “hey Grover, you wear these while we fight Medusa” it’s just *suddenly, he has them* it would’ve taken literally 10 seconds to explain it in the episode

    Ok on certain subjects (1/2)
Medusa: she’s shown on multiple occasions that she is a liar and we are shown this throughout the episode. She knows people are fighting over her story and she’s one of the only person who can give a perspective. I understand the confusion because as you said “it’s a dump of exposition” and I didn’t notice this until my 3rd watch but it’s a mix of Hesiod and Ovid’s version where she was a priestess of Athena and was smitten by Poseidon and Athena in reaction to them hooking up had cursed her and Poseidon didn’t stand up for her or offer to change her back, he smashed and dashed. To be fair she’s a literal snake lady so euphemism for a liar could be possible. I do understand it’s easily missable and she’s definitely somewhat lying through her teeth at Annabeth and from her change of expression with who she’s talking to you can tell she knows they’re already confused by which version to go by. But her line “you like your father being unable to stand up for the one you love” cemented that story. It could be possible she lied to herself and went “maybe this curse can somewhat be a blessing”
Now world building: the show is trying to show us the point and strength of the mist and I agree with you that it’s very very jarring sometimes seeing how the mist is to normal people and to demigods. Like you said when she put on the cap it brought me out of it a little bit, to be fair these are a bunch of people from NYC the same city where someone can get stabbed infront of you and you can go on walking as if your day is unchanged, I lived there I should know.
Storyline: I understand why they changed the bus a bit, they’re trying to streamline all the problems Percy and Annabeth had so they can actually build a love story so having them juxtapose together both having a choice to betray each other and choosing not to, helps them get closer and sets up a bond when they spent most of the episode fighting.

    • @Hydro0223
      @Hydro0223 6 месяцев назад +6

      Ok on certain subjects (2/2)
Annabeth’s character: they’re somewhat moving her character around because in the book Annabeth by the time Percy comes has realized that as a daughter of Athena she’s naturally smarter and needs to help people naturally catch up to her at understanding and figuring things out. She knows she can be wrong but it’s unlikely. Now Annabeth in the show, she’s more “no one has proven me wrong so I can’t be wrong” and although we haven’t seen much of it yet I feel over time she’ll not only find out she was wrong about Percy but wrong Luke and they’ll probably add more stuff along the way. She’s slowly realizing she’s smart but doesn’t have anything figured out while Book Annabeth’s character was learning to have faith in other people (besides Luke).
Grover’s song: I chuckled out of uncomfortably and thought it was stupid but when Percy did it I yelled “that dumbs**t was to set up a joke!”
Now on why world reveal isn’t slow: I think that’s a normal thing between transitioning between a book and a screen, in the book we only have what the character reveal to us so we slowly see the world as they do, in a screen (especially for a movie/tv show based on a book we read) they know we already know everything so they switch out the show reveal for usually gags, quick explanations, or plot twist. There’s some instances where personally it was okay like Annabeth revealing Aunty Em’s is likely Medusa because I was shocked in the book that she didn’t recognize that. That’s your mother’s second worst enemy and you walk into her playground.
The Fury ending scene:Yeah I feel that was more “we need a quick exit” because I was wondering why she sat there too, honestly I think it was cinematography focused on Annabeth’s acting (which I liked cause you can tell she’s slowly changing her thoughts about Percy) and they just left a quick explanation that like you took me out a little. But besides that I personally loved the episode.

Question do you think you would enjoy this version mire if there was already a book acurate live action or animated portrayal already in existence? I feel like i would. I can still appreciate trying the new angle but i do wish i could have seen a version where tgey slowly realize who/what they are dealing with theoughout the episode.
