      The problem with that is, its not the politic of disney to make female characters with flaws or show vulnerability. You may think I'm talking nonsense, but it's a pattern with disney shows/movies. You can see trough all the episodes show they only praise Annabeth, saying she is the best and amazing, how alleto said she is the most outstanding demigod alive or some shit, like how? Why? I could imagine Grover framing Clarisse as the thief, them telling it to Luke in the next episode, so giving him more time to plan, while also creating more tension between the characters for SoM and using that as a reason for Clarisse to go on her quest alone

    Honestly, I see what they were trying to do with the whole throne scene and Hephaestus on the tunnel, but I think it was done so much better on the book. Not only because of the spiders as you have mentioned on the video, but also because on the scene where they are escaping from the tunnel, we see Percy and Annabeth working together, where Percy uses his newly found water powers and Annabeth shows her strategic mindset to tell Percy what to do.

    The relationship between Zeus and Ares has always confused me. Zeus hates Ares and makes certain everyone knows it. And it sort of makes sense as Ares is the eldest male son of Zeus and Hera, therefore the rightful heir to Olympus. If there's one thing Zeus hates, it's any threat to his power and authority. With the Greek tradition of sons replacing their fathers, the idea of the God of War being your son would scare Zeus, especially with a wife like Hera. Also they're opposites. Zeus for all his faults believes in order, laws, justice, and creation. Ares is all about chaos, domination, and destruction. The last type of character he would want to pass the throne to. But in every story Zeus kills anyone or anything that poses a challenge to him or even a potential challenge to him. Even mortals who might rise to levels of power near the gods he strikes down. But he keeps Ares around. Seems like the one person Zeus would have killed from the start to me. Just another Greek mystery.

      Consideration towards Hera.
      One of the few facts in the myths that hint that Zeus does love Hera is that both Ares and Hephaestus have some immunity in the pantheon.
      Ares for all his roughness and bloodthirstiness, still has a place and a voice in Olympus. Hephaestus was banished from Olympus by Zeus and was welcomed back. All because they are Hera's sons.

    • @unarealtaragionevole
      @unarealtaragionevole 7 месяцев назад +7

      @@davidfromm Well it depends on the stories. For example, Hephaestus may or may not be Zeus' son. Personally, I prefer the version were he is not because it makes more sense to me as it aligns more with the early and classical Greek culture's descriptions for the gods. One of the biggest disconnects between our modern image of the Greek gods and the classical Greeks is how they look. To early and classical Greek cultures, they saw the gods as the epitome of physical perfection. We often make the gods, especially the older six (Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus) as middle to later aged humans. Zeus is this older man with white hair and a white beard, but that's not how the classical Greeks saw him. All of the gods were young, healthy, and beautiful. They didn't grow old or change from their physical prime. That's why Hephaestus' deformity is a really big deal. It says something about him, or his story, is abnormal. His deformity was the result of Hera's bumbled attempt to "make" a god in retaliation for Zeus' having Athena from Metis. But were Zeus didn't 'try' to make Athena (she was a passive result of him consuming Metis)...Hera did actively 'try' to make Hephaestus and was punished for it. Either version is sad for Hephaestus as he is always the laughing stock of the gods and forced to reside away from the others in his workshop on Olympus.
      Did Zeus love Hera? That's a great question. As crazy as it sounds, I would like to think there was love on some level. Hera didn't really get a choice in the matter. And I think we can all agree that while Zeus was the king of the gods........well.....he was Zeus. Not winning any husband or father of the year awards. ;o)

Chaotic confusion, bizarre quests, snappy wit, heartfelt character moments, etc. Ares was actually right out of the book. And despite the changes, I can see how "Now broadcasting live to Olympus TV!" might have been a bit cheesy for the series and I can accept the changes, but I agree they should have stuck in a scene with the spiders. Percy is supposed to be the reckless one and Annabeth is the smart one, how is Percy being more respectful of Ares then Annabeth is???

Annabeth is practically catatonic from the fear and Percy uses his water powers to summon water to push the love boat. He later correctly guessed it was due to the arachne story and uses the fear to get Annabeth out of the lotus hotel and casino

    One question: where are the spiders? That’s a huge part of Annabeth’s character in the book. The last chapter showed Annabeth’s interests and hopes, this was supposed to show she can be vulnerable and afraid. And it makes sense knowing both her parentage and (albeit it’s in the later books) her trauma as a child, leading one of the reasons she left home.

    The thing that irritated me the most in this episode, and it is something I greatly dislike in the books as well, it's Ares's relationship with his children. Of all the negative traits that Ares has in the myths, Rick gave him the only one that the god of war most certainly does not have, that being making Ares an abusive father.
    Like I get it making the Titans one-note villains, they were the main bad guys in the story, even though every piece of Greek mythology, and even Roman mythology, presents the Titans, except Kronos, in a positive light, sometimes they're presented as even better to humans than the Olympians, but there is no reason to do the same to Ares.

    • @All-ze9cl

      Yeah, Ares was very stereotypical. The gods personalities were pretty one dimensional, but I think it worked since it was a kids book, and it worked because it made us not really like the gods, which is good bc they aren't good people to their kids. But Ares in pjo is nothing like the myths.
      My only question is, if a second season happens, are they going to keep the Ares abusing Clarisse plotline? I'm sure he will be dissapointed in her, but in 2024 I doubt they would make him sexist and physically abusive. Also, show Ares is much more likable than book Ares, who was just a complete ass the whole time. So i have a feeling they are going to tone down his hatred for Clarisse. I hope they don't completely get rid of it though, because It made us sympathize with a character who seemed pretty one dimensional from her first introduction.

      Even Kronos was not that bad. Heck, at least two greeks (Pindar and maybe Aeschylus) believed that Cronus was made the ruler of the island of the Blessed. And people activaly worshipped Cronos in ancient greece, and especially in Rome.
      The other titans however were not viewed in positive light. Iapetus for example is considered a very violent enemy of Zeus, and all of his sons were enemies of Zeus too (Atlas, Menoitios, Prometheus and Epimetheus). And the word "titan" was generally used to refer to a violent being in ancient greece, they even said the barbaric people from Thrace were descended from the blood of the Titans. So actually Cronus was viewed in a more positive light when separated from the other titans, but the titans as a collective were viewed in a negative light.

And come on Percy was not this passive in the books either, especially in the arch scene one of the actual best moments is when he decides to save everyone for the first time not just grover and annabeth, he for the frist time thinks not of his mother but the lives of people in arch. One of the main points in the books is that Percy has to focus to get wet. He can just be walking in and out of bodies of water completely dry so what is the damn point of having the actor drenched in water, I am so confused, maybe I'm missing something, but we didn't even see him get out of the river so why?!

    Ares was probably the best part of the episode, and im6saying this as someone who was so excited for the love ride thing because I remember it being very fun in the book (at the very least because Percy and Annabeth's relationship is nowhere near the point where going on a ride like that wouldn't be awkward, which was kinda lost in the show), and I'm genuinely concerned where this is going. I might be wrong, because I don't remember the scene from the book to a T, but wasn't the whole thing about it being a trap for Ares and Aphrodite, not Percy and Annabeth? Because I definitely remember the thing with the net, and the cameras, and it all being broadcast on Olympus TV or whatever, and it was a fun little moment when Hephaestus realised he's caught the wrong folks... So, why do the gods make things complicated specifically for Percy and Annabeth? Aren't they the ones who sent them on the quest to get the Bolt? Also, Hephaestus reusing his own old trap for someone else entirely feels diminishing to his whole I Live In A Volcano And Build Things kinda vibe. Wouldn't Aphrodite know this chair if the trap was intended for her? So yeah the whole break in this story feels very off and confusing and might be the sign of a bigger issue coming up starting with what in Hades is Hermes doing at the Lotus casino, that's definitely not the way they got there, it just feels like for the show they took, like, top-7 (museum, camp, garden gnome emporium, that arch thing, love ride, lotus casino, Hades) most iconic locations from the book and just pinball the trio between them without bothering to add the actual ways and reasons they went there in the books. And yeah, they're probably going to say Clarisse stole the Bolt because she is a bully and we should pin the red-herring antagonist badge to the most obvious candidate, and then it's not going to lead to anything, because they're going to Hades for Percy's mom anyway and will find out that the theory was wrong... Please, at least don't butcher Hades and Persephone, please, please, pleeeease...

    Best episode so far IMO. Thought the conversation with Ares and Grover was a great addition (as well as the writing and portrayal of Ares) and my first impression regarding the ending cliffhanger was that Grover will blame Clarisse for stealing the bolt. I thought the depiction of Hephaestus’ story was well done as well as the inclusion of Hera’s throne. Loved the dynamics between all the characters this episodes. Oh and I really liked how Percy was super appreciative of his father for saving him and watching over him.
    Other than that, just the same (somewhat minor) criticisms that the episodes and show are too short, that certain things that were cut should have been included. This episode followed the pattern of seemingly neglecting action, in regards to Percy using his powers to help Annabeth out of the water. I don’t know if it was a budget, time, or cgi issue but it would be nice to see stuff like that play out.

    Im so glad you mentioned the spider scene. I think in the book, it was really significant bc it was the first time percy and the readers saw past annabeths shell. Especially bc in the book, the scene where she tells him about her father and step mom doesn't happen until the zoo truck. It let us see that she isn't invincible, and that she actually has one very common fear, tho ofc it's dialed up to extreme levels bc of her parentage. Its her forst moment of true vulnerability, like you said. I didnt even think about the possiblity of including that and the throne scene as well, but i think that would have been great.

    Having watched beyond ep.3 now, I definitely agree that it is getting better. Like I said before with one of your previous videos, the changes don’t bother me as much as long as the core of the story and the characterisation is accurate. Who Percy is and how he responds to the world around him is the most integral part of the story. I was ecstatic during the Arch scene when Percy makes the swap. I had the exact response the Mythology Guy did: “There’s Percy!” I know some people mentioned that the scene took a bit of agency from Percy where he falls rather than making the choice to jump, but you have to also remember that the way the show told that part, the mortals were already gone. That being said, I do understand that it also takes away a bit of his character development with Ares taunting him later about his cowardice. Who knows? Grover and Annabeth mention him being scared in earlier episodes. Maybe we’ll get something later from that. Another thing to remember about his character too for all those talking about Percy’s bravery and how he was badass later is that Percy’s bravery has never really come from the whole “I have to do this as the hero. It’s my responsibility to the world.” This isn’t Avatar: The Last Airbender. Percy does not have a responsibility to the world, really, and quite frankly, it’s a very secondary motivation and a reluctant one, at that. So, the whole “we have to save the world” thing with the lightning bolt is definitely one of my “really?” complaints about the show currently. And yes, I know those are the stakes in the first book, but it isn’t really one that Percy is as concerned about aside from towards the end when he’s like “great, this war is going to happen and it’s going to be my fault. Wonderful.” But I digress. Percy’s moments of bravery have always been in connection to saving someone else. He doesn’t think about being brave. Actually, 9 times out of 10 in the books, someone is usually following up with something along the lines of “that was reckless and stupid. What on Earth were you thinking?!” Or “what the heck happened?” At the end of TLT, he sacrifices his opportunity to make sure his friends get out of the Underworld. In TTC, he’s the one distracting the Nemean Lion so everyone else can get away, and then at the end, he reluctantly accepts the burden of the Great Prophecy to prevent Nico from having to worry about it. Come BotL and he’s sacrificing himself by distracting the Telkines so Annabeth can get away. That part of his character has been there from the start and I’m so glad we’re getting to see it because it also is providing the show, not tell aspect that will hopefully eventually lead into the fatal flaws conversations and realisation we get later. I’m also glad we’re starting to see Percy’s intelligence shine through because he IS. Annabeth has even said he is. A lot of times though he is reckless and impulsive. Also, I do like that even though (since this is a show) we don’t have Percy’s internal thoughts about his mom over the course of the story that helps cement her as his primary motivation, we’re seeing it in other ways like the Greek myths and her telling him stories about them being an driving factor in his character in the story. I do still wish Grover and Percy’s relationship was presented better and that we got more of Luke and Percy bonding since we didn’t get much of that. Also, side note: hoping for the future that Percy’s water powers are not just going to be breathing underwater and the whirlpool thing, especially considering the big bonding moment he and Annabeth have come SoM. I know it may be a bit difficult potentially, but the whirlpool thing to get Annabeth out of the water in the Tunnel of Love was just a little weird to me. Annabeth casually talking about architecture was also just such a great thing for me and then her conversation about about how much she looked up to Thalia and how strong she was. That was also a definite “there’s Annabeth!” moment for me. Also, Leah facial acting in this episode and the last with when Percy offers up his sword is excellent! The first time, you can definitely see she’s grateful but also thinking “demigods shouldn’t give up their weapons” and the second in the Tunnel of Love ride when you can visibly see her remembering what happened the last time Percy gave her his sword. I’m also strangely liking how bold Grover’s character is with his interactions with Ares, I’m just really not a fan of how the had him betray Percy in the beginning. Also, aren’t Percy and Grover supposed to have some kind of empathic connection? I definitely can’t see these two having that at all.

    From the first three episodes I got the feeling something is off. It looks like PJO, It feels like PJO, but it doesn’t taste…no, It doesn’t feel PJO. Episode four felt like a course correction not in terms of direction, but of momentum. The story was let to breathe and flow more naturally. Episode five has Ares. I love it obviously.

A very fun way to learn more of Greek mythology while also shitting on directors who themselves shit on the source material. Would love to see some videos covering the events of the actual stories like the The Odyssey, you enthusiasm is contagious!

    I think they left Ares eyes because it made him more human. We can see his ego in his eyes. Plus, he’s a god, he can change his appearance whenever he wants. I think they’re saving the fire for later on. (You know, you know). ⚔️

    Ok my problem with this episode is Annabeth whole speech to Hephaestus about pride and the Gods. She doesn’t have this problem with Athena in the books, and Annabeth character is BUILT on pride. Like, she has a whole section in Sea of Monsters about how she’s too prideful. So her speech just interferes with her fatal flaw, which I really liked how every character had one.

    • @benwasserman8223
      @benwasserman8223 7 месяцев назад +22

      I think it’s more like being prideful in the Gods. Not in oneself. Annabeth is still very sure of herself to a fault - this IS someone who would rather have the Sphinx maul her than answer unchallenging SAT questions.

    • @vaayuo
      @vaayuo 7 месяцев назад +6

      @@benwasserman8223 yes EXACTLY, she's still the wise girl with hubris we love , it's just that she's realising the error in the ways of Gods just a bit earlier.

      @razerclaw2438 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@benwasserman8223 also I have another nitpick which this episode made me realize more so than 4 and that’s Percy and Annabeth’s whole relationship feels way to quick. The whole enemies to friend to lovers expanded over five books, like lightning ended with them SHAKING HANDS. I feel like this show not putting more moments of them bickering each other due to godly rival and slowing down is really gonna mess up something great they had in the book

    • @emilyrae158
      @emilyrae158 7 месяцев назад +2

      i feel like it still shows her fatal flaw in that she thinks she has a chance to figure out the machine even though literally no one but hephaestus can including other gods. also this is how annabeth describes it in SOM and i think it aligns with her denouncing the gods for how they run things:
      “Hubris means deadly pride, Percy. Thinking you can do things better than anyone else ... even the gods.”
      “You feel that way?”
      She looked down. “Don’t you ever feel like, what if the world really is messed up? What if we could do it all over again from scratch? No more war. Nobody homeless. No more summer reading homework.”
      “I’m listening.”
      “I mean, the West represents a lot of the best things mankind ever did-that’s why the fire is still burning. That’s why Olympus is still around. But sometimes you just see the bad stuff, you know? And you start thinking the way Luke does: ‘If I could tear this all down, I would do it better.’ Don’t you ever feel that way? Like you could do a better job if you ran the world?”

I am really worried that they are going to make Annabetg the hero unstead of Percy. Disney girlbossification if its IPs stand against it.

They problem with Fantasy is they studios dont take it serious so they change what they want because they often don t like or understand the stories. Name one good live action Fantasy adaption without GOT or LOTR

    Now I'm convinced that the writers just really wanted the main trio to leave Camp Half-Blood, because in the book, Percy even had enough time to play card games with a horse before he had to leave camp alongside Annabeth and Grover. The faster pace in those first three episodes could have been simply so that the show could get to the main conflict faster, and the Medusa encounter just happened to be written into the episode where Percy's group finally embarks on their quest.

    I agree that the show is starting to hit its stride with the characters and with the humor and such. I am still bummed that they chose to change each scene so much from the book, simply because I really wanted to see some of those things coming to life on the screen. But given the changes that they've made I'm happy that it's at least starting to feel like Percy and Annabeth (and Grover, but to a lesser extent), not just a bunch of totally new characters. I do hope that in future seasons we see a bit more of scenes taken straight from the books.
