    The tempo of this song is brilliant. The energy and action of the solos and lyrics is arrested by the sudden reality and weight of the question, "But what am I gonna do..." Merle was amazing.

      The people that make the comments didn't know Merle Haggard like I did he was a good friend a good teacher an excellent musician he was teaching me how to play the guitar when I lost finger in my left hand and I could no longer play because of the excruciating pain in the womb and still does we used to sing and pick out in the bleachers it's Soledad yard Merle Haggard shorty Freeman myself and one other that I can't remember his name if you don't believe me look up shorty Freeman in South Bakersfield he has a church there thank you for letting me enlighten you a little on a great man and friend may God bless and keep him always he's up there picking and singing for the Lord now amen

    Love Merle's style in that he had long bridges while you thought about the lyrics you'd just heard...it really drives the point home...
    Here, it's real simple...the guy says he can smoke and drink until morning, and he'll probably be okay, but what about the rest of his life? Then you get an extended musical interlude while you consider this poor bastard's situation... alone until he dies...

    RIP Ol merle i will always regret not being able to see him live before he passed. I remember the day he did I was at work and they announced it on the radio and the dj said that he was going to play Hag songs all day. His legacy will never be forgotten. Everybody says Jones is the GOAT but I can't lie to myself, that title belongs to Merle Haggard sorry but not sorry.

      Luckily for me, my father in law Ken got tickets for himself, my wife Peggy, and me to see him live at Wild Horse Pass casino here in Arizona about 5 or 6 years ago. And room to crash in for the night. RIP Merle, Ken, and Peggy.

    REAL COUNTRY MUSIC right here, country music isn’t country music anymore , today’s “ country “ is part rap, part hip-hop and the other parts wish they were real country music. Beautiful voice with a country band .
