Blaze Foley sang this song at my dad's memorial in 1984 . He loved and thought that my dad walked on water. He barely made it through the song. Rest in peace Blaze. And rest in peace to my father Clyde Buchanan. Writer of Austin Pickers.

knowing this was written by a troubled, sometimes homeless guy...seems to tear me up, putting myself in his, and all us other troubled souls shoes...if i could only fly...i sure wish we could all fly, to be near our loved ones, when we are lonely, and need to be near them...then for some strange reason, it makes me think of my loved ones who have passed away...if i could only fly to heaven to see them.

What a beautiful song. Sure do miss you Merle. Glad your music is still here to enjoy, I never get tired of his voice. So much emotion and depth of soul. I love the way he interprets every song he sings he left so many gifts for us to hold on to.

Dear everyone- Merle didn’t give a direct shout out to Blaze, but by making a perfect version of this song, he made some folks like me look it up. Now I , Sinatra fan, am also a fan of Merle and Blaze. When you have talent like these three gentlemen, a brick wall can’t keep you from busting trough.

What a great time for music there are no computers and all these musicians were playing live in front of an audience on TV how amazing is that? Not only that but the lead guitar player is absolutely amazing I certainly would like to know who he is. I absolutely love this song too. Cheers to everyone who loves good music that is made by real musicians

Wynn Stewart taught Merel a lot about music. Merel still followed his Bakersfield roots. He didn't like Nashville that much.
