- A Colorado woman whose contractor destroyed a tile shower over a payment dispute is speaking out about the incident and showing off her newly-renovated bathroom to Inside Edition. The now-viral video shows contractor Terry Gregory taking a sledgehammer to the walls and tile floor after he says Amber Trucke refused to pay him fully for his work. Several contractors were so upset about the video, they banded together to give Trucke the bathroom of her dreams, completely free of charge.
I hate this story. She didn't pay the contractor, and still gets a free bathroom. Terrible.
He didn't do a good job and then he didn't want to repair it. He also went to destroy his client's house. Terrible is when you justify incompetent failures.

Actually, the lady wanted the work to be done by locals, and locals did the work. They saw the pictures of the work the scumbag did before he destroyed it, and they felt bad for her. In fact, when they were doing demo, nothing had been done right and the shower would have quickly failed leaving serious water damage to other areas of the house.
You can tell alot by listening to the emotions in someones voice, she knows shes screwed him and he knows his getting screwed out of dinner for weeks 😢
Not only that, but if I genuinely had the intention to pay for a proper job, my response would be, "Hey, STOP! STOP! I said I'll pay you in full if you just fix these issues!" There was nothing like that going on.

Stories like these enable horrible customers like her to think they can not pay for work done. There's always two sides to every story. $3000 is only maybe half or a third of what she was supposed to pay. As a contractor myself, I've never had an issue like this, yet would consider doing the same. I always tell people to check references and give daily updates of my work to address any issues.
When I'm done, I expect to get paid in full.
Okay...but, like...$7500? For that job?? All he did was put up some stock tiles in the shower. Looking at the bathroom, the final amount was definitely not worth that much, no matter the hours he put in. A bit of scamming was involved.

I live in this area and this women does this all the time to people and teaches her kids to do the same, let her shower in that bathroom for a while until she realizes what she did to this man and his small business! It’s her home though. He’s now responsible for any damages even if the work was his. There’s a legal way to force the homeowner to pay for a remodel.

I'm with the contractor. I work hard for my money and I've had customers try to do this to me. I go above and beyond. And it's terrible for some Karen to try to get away with not paying and then to try to make him look bad. And throw him under the bus absolutely ridiculous! This woman is a horrible person!

Look up photos of the work that he did. It was absolutely horrendous. Either he's a brand new contractor, or he didn't like this lady and intentionally did a terrible job. I'm sure she could have done a better job.

I started a landscaping business right out of high school. Long story short a single mom gave me 2 bounced checks and wouldn't answer the door or my phone calls. I came by in the middle of the night and emptied a trailer full of grass into her yard. Gave her a refund of her grass.

He did a horrible job though. Uneven tiles, and huge gaps in between the grout. Thats why you only pay half up front. If you want the rest of the money, you should do your job correctly.
Search for the full story before you judge. The contractor refuse to show the receipt of the material had been ordered (which she already paid for), and she asked the job to be inspected before final payment. What he destroyed is UNFINISHED job. This contractor is a crook that why he ran when asked questions by the reporter.

Also it doesnt make sense, she claims she wanted to do a inspection on it, then she is there with her phone and claims the job isnt good enough? Which is it? Did she get to see it or not. Also that is her side of the story, as you can see they dont ask for his side they ambush him at the store with his wife and hurl accusations at him like 'shes traumatized!' ... Also how do you know the contract they signed or the agreement she had? Maybe she agreed to pay it in installments, or by period, or by progress. We dont know. But we wont know cause they arent gonna give us a real story on this, theyll only side with her and paint the man to be a monster.. ive seen multiple other similar videos where owners refuse to pay in full or something similar and they destroy it, they never side with the owner who is trying to stiff the workers, then again the owners in those arent pretty ladies who post it on social media and claim to have lasting trauma from it.

Shame on those dudes for stepping in. If you don't like the service someone is providing you stop them the moment you see a problem and try to rectify the situation. If no solution can be found you pay them what you owe and go with another contractor. You don't wait until they're finished and then refuse to pay what is owed to them. Try ordering a tomahawk steak for dinner, eating every bite, and then informing the waiter you will not be paying because it wasn't to your liking. See how well that goes.

That person recording isn't the homeowner. It's a neighbor. It's very normal to pay half upfront and the other half upon completion and approval of the work. It would've had to be torn out anyway, as the contractor didn't get permits, so inspectors wouldn't have approved it.

I’ve dealt with people not paying and we started to take it apart. Not destroy it like he did but in a more civil way. I totally think he was in his right. If someone says other wise they have never had to work in renovations or construction.

She posted the images on Facebook. The work was awful. Before you assume she ripped off this contractor you might want to see those images on her Facebook. I don’t do tule work but father did growing up and after seeing those images she ought to get her $3000 refunded. This guy has no idea how to do tule work.

I agree. I've been a contractor for over 20 years. This is a weekly thing for us. We've talked about doing what he did but just keep giving the customers free stuff and don't get paid.

He was the scammer. He did such a bad job and the pictures make that absolutely clear (not sure why they didn't include them in this video - they really should have but you can find them if you google this story). She already paid him $3,000 and had noticed various problems with the work (the tiles were unevenly placed and crooked, there was excess grout, some tiles were already cracked, and the edges and corners of tiles were sharp and pointy) - the guy continued to work, but didn't address any of those issues, didn't actually finish the job which included installing the shower and then demanded payment in full saying he'd done everything she asked for but wouldn't allow her to actually check before he got paid. When she said she was on her way to inspect the work he'd done before paying him, he beat her to it and smashed everything with a sledgehammer to try and destroy the evidence that he hadn't actually done the job he had been hired to do.
This woman acts so smug that she expects people to feel empathetic towards her, she just proved that not paying anything gets you free service no wonder she’s single she deserves to be alone if I owned a contracting business I would be glad to hire that guy. Shame on inside edition for being biased on that woman’s side then go on to harass that contractor

The worst part of it is I'm pretty the other contractor that did the job for free only did it for media coverage, siding with the non-paying customer. It's really depressing that the homeowner didn't pay, then when she was put in her place she got a brand new bathroom, so stupid.

@@KattKingston I had tile work done on a kitchen remodel. The first round had chipped edges on the tile cuts, wavy lines/grout widths of all sizes, and bowed walls. The second round Ruined my 12' by 10' carpet in my living room - and I was cleaning out cement from my cabinets for YEARS. (demo that went BAD). The contractor was a nightmare. On the other hand, I know the tile contractor that did the work in the video. I would not hesitate to recommend him!! Honest, wonderful work, and truthful. You cannot ask for more.

It was his property. Contractors like this have every right to do this especially if they do not get paid. This wasn't violent in anyway. He never threatened her specifically in any way. He was just getting his property back.

Even if you want to "verify the work" you don't hold 50%. 10% ($750) is a reasonable hold amount. I'm not saying what he did was totally correct. But she did only pay for materials. So materials bye bye. Don't want to pay me for the work. Fine. You can't have the materials either.

I have seen the pictures of the tile job. The work was so bad it looked like it was done by a homeowner who was laying tile for the first time in his life. It's no wonder he came in and busted it all up.

The other contractors were from Colorado. That means her statement wasn't false. You gotta branch out a bit to find enough contractors willing to pitch in the labor and funds required to build a $10k shower in someone's house for free. I'm guessing they also sought to use it as an opportunity to highlight their work and good nature on national TV as advertisement for their business.

The man broke into the house when the owner wasn’t home, the bathroom was paid for the home owner just wanted to see the work before giving the full amount. The contractor then destroyed said bathroom under his own accord, so what’s there to feel bad about? This was his own stupid decision and his unprofessional actions brought on this bad press for his business.

If you saw his work, you would've wished you payed someone who had no experience in renovating bathrooms, at least they'd attempt to make their work look great, and at least be reasonably subpar. Where I'm from this is very common, if you don't pay, the work is destroyed, makes perfect sense since you cost the contractor thousands of dolars on materials, experience, time, maybe even gas for transporting all the stuff needed. I’m honestly on the fence with this one. On one hand he should’ve gotten paid the full amount and he can take down what he has built up. On the other hand it is a moral obligation that the customer doesn’t have to pay for something that isn’t done right. If A customer gets their order wrong, The restaurant should give their money back and they often do. Besides she already gave over $3000 for a crappy job.
