It's easy. On the pure engine side, Octane wins. On the node and usability side, Cycles wins. So if you want to be efficient, stay in Cycles for now. If you need some very special render calculations that Cycles can't do yet, go for Octane. In most cases the differences are marginal.
And most of the times if something not looking good it's not engine fault but user's.
@@Igoreshkin
Im not a power user but the only significant difference Ive seen is that cycles struggles with accurate refraction and caustics (it actually used to be very accurate on the 2.0 era) other than that i have trouble noticing any difference.
@@teresashinkansen9402 I depends strongly on what you do. I've compared several scenes between Cycles and Octane and the results in Octane just look better. It's hard to put a finger on it. I also have troubles with bump maps in Cycles - something that works great in Octane.
32MB ram 💀
guess he was going for 32gigs lol
If u still with a Gtx 1050 laptop u wouldve probably maxed out ur ram
Hi, If you want to make a fair comparison make it right. 1. First you need to use same BRDF model for materials in both renderers. 2. Use same View transform AGX, ACES or whatever you prefer, but make sure both have the same. 3. Make sure you setup your materials right. On your example I can see you don't know how to use normal map in Cycles.
In general Cycles and Octane are very close to each other with some features being better on Octane like Sky, Camera lens simulation post effects or better caustics. I've seen crappy renders with Octane and great with Cycles. There is no magic button on both of them. If you know how to use the tool right you can achieve great results using both engines.
👍🤓
You forgot to mention one major game-changer between Cycles and Octane: tessellation displacement. While adaptive subdivision is available in Cycles, it can strain the scene. This is the key feature prompting my move to Octane.
However, there are several disadvantages to using Octane as well. It tends to crash frequently, and when using third-party add-ons, you often need to manually adjust materials.
@@viljamsdzefersons4093 Octane texture displacement is pretty limited and supports only bitmap textures on UV mapped objects. It has a vertex displacement too but requires a very dense mesh and it is not adaptive like Cycles displacement.
The internet connection is not used to upload. It's to check if you launch just a single process at a time.
Have you equalized number of light bounces in Octane and Cycles? My observations - Octane make more photorealistic materials, and overall look is much more true-to-life. It has photon tracing, nested dielectrics, true displacement without having geometry is just nuts. As Andreas Resch alrealy mentioned - there's no upload in Octane. Internet is used only for server activation and maybe some metadata. But no models or materials upload. Just test it yourself. Load bunch of 16k textures (300-400 mb each) and render.
Ok 👌 thanks 🙏 I'll try it and yes all the bounce were set to 16
Cycles Vs. Octane Blender Render
true displacement is just turning the the polygon into vdb. and photon tracing just and old method called photon mapping which has been around for like 20 years in renderers like mental ray.
Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a quick update about Octane for Blender. While there's a free version up for grabs, it's essential to be aware of the limitations that come with the premium tiers. Based on Octane's website, the Prime tier does have some restrictions such as being tied to a licensing server, lack of support for multiple GPUs, and no network rendering capabilities, among others.
Personally, I've found that using Octane can sometimes be a bit challenging due to compatibility issues with the latest Blender versions and less-than-ideal integration. Maybe I'm missing something, but for now, it hasn't quite aligned with my workflow as smoothly as I'd hoped. If anyone has tips or experiences to share, I'm all ears!
when you said 1050ti my spine shivered im sorry you gotta work with that 😭
Low power GPU with Octane Blender #octaneblender #octanerender
SORRY ....I have a correction to make about octane loading stuff to the Internet thanks to the comments below octane does not actually upload anything to the Internet it is I guess just checking if you can use octane through the server ruclips.net/user/shortslgTfZ3M8xiI
What upload? There's no upload happening, neither in the free nor in the paid version. Unless you are using a render service like RNDR. And the paid version needs an internet connection as well. You have to buy a dongle to get around that.
And GGX is a render model. You mean AgX which is a color transform model. You might want to use GGX in both cases for comparisons though.
BRO... OctaneRender Studio+ Subscriptions allow artists offline rendering support.
CHECK THE SITE home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/purchase/
Are you deleting my answers? That's not cool.
@@1polygonewithme It "allows" support. You still need to buy the dongle though to make it work.
Ok 🙏 I'm Sorry I was WRONG about Octane Blender 🤭#octaneblender #octanerender
Premium Octane does not need internet #octaneblender #octanerender

I appreciate that
Support for Blender Octane
Dude this is so great!! See you in Skool!
SEE YOU THERE
Octane is free in Blender for only one GPU, that's why I use Cycles ;) Good video.
My new iPad Air M2 using OctaneX, renders with decent times. It’s use be annoying to transfer my models from my Samsung Tab S8 tablet (Nomad Sculpt) to Windows (Blender/Octane) just to get a path traced render. Not anymore lol. Octane deserves some praise!
How to I set my octane to be able to switch to cycles at a go, I recently started using octane and all my cycles files are all not working, I don’t want to spend the time converting stuff, how do I set it up to be able to switch at a go? Please help
Here my reply hope it helps 🙏 ruclips.net/user/shortsDgxwLAOx6F4?feature=share
Octane doesn't uploading anything, it checks your license but it doesn't upload any assets to the cloud unless you are using RNDR to render. If it's taking longer to render than cycles then it's slower than cycles and that how it was in the blender guru render engine test as well.
It's tricky to do comparison like this, like first you calculated how much time it takes to render 50 samples but there's no defacto standard for what a sample is so it changes between engine to engine. Different engines also use diff noises so it makes it more difficult to match the noise pattern. They also have diff light paths setup, which adds more variables. Also, if I'm not wrong both Cycles and Octane have their own color space so unless you are using ACES or something, it's not gonna look the same and comparison would very much useless unless you have all the variables set to same. Same with shaders, they are same but diff at the same time.
At the end of the day, it doesn't make a whole lotta difference of what render engine you are using if know how to use them because no one's gonna be able to tell what render engine was used to make that movie if you've done proper rendering and composting as well. Octane has some more advanced features but it's made with plug n play mentality so it looks good out of the box but you wouldn't get as much flexibility as other render engines unless you write your own OSL code whereas Cycles has more flexibility, and it has more control in the shaders I've ever seen out of any renderer other than maybe Renderman. Cycles is incredibly more powerful than most beginners can understand, the stuff you can make just with shaders in cycles and vector math is absolutely ridiculous, check out the Nodevember stuff. The whole reason cycles exists in the first place is because one of the lead devs of arnold after autodesk bough it, he wanted to make a renderer based on what he liked and disliked in Arnold and other renderers lol.
Cycles is also CPU and GPU so you can use both where Octane GPU only so if you run out of GPU memory, it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.
Thanks 👍

Bugging infront of the camera is so disgusting he could remove that part from the video
Bugging 🐛 in front of the camera is disgusting 🤣😛
Is Octane using direct lighting or path tracing? Since the glass looked a bit off. The black spots are usually when you use direct lighting.
Overall Octane looks better to me and render options and light passes are much more advanced. I’m also curious when u use a decent GPU with RTX. Octane really put those RT cores to use.
4:42 did you check neutral response in the octane imager? If unchecked, octane renders slightly yellowish
I was using AGX 🤓👍
I really love you channel, and from my brief experince i do like octane render much more..
I have delicate eyes ;)
But i stay on cycles because all of my materials (complex) from imeshh and polygon, and blenderkit of fabrics, special materials etc.. what do you suggest to do regarding that?
What about assets that have couple of different materials in the model?
Is'nt the proccess of changing to octane material can be too complicated or even not possible?
Like some tips.
And another question, does octane for blender 4.0 is out yet? thx a lot
agreed. I struggle, since I miss Octane´s look. But the intergration for Cycles saves a lot of time. Converting materials is a bit tedious. Also the server shuts down sometimes. Really annoying
Bro, I want to get more into Octane for Blender. Only thing I moved from C4D to Blender. I bought a whole load of plugins that use Cycles. Does this mean I have to convert materials to octane when using these plugins. What will happen with the assets that use Cycles. Example is things like Botaniq etc. Thank you
yeah at the moment that is a problem octane Yes you'll have to convert them but some of the materials in different assets may not work exactly the same if the node setup is complex That's why many of my members in my community we are working to build our own material library and working to try to convert some materials for very useful assets but fortunately at the moment until Octane gains popularity this is an issue .....
Octance's bump wood floor is nicer and has more depth, why?
Octane Blender Texture Displacement #octaneblender
Hello, thank you for your amazing videos! I got an issue with Octane, in render viewport it doesn't render at all (the whole area is just grey) but when I hit render (F12) it gives a normal render. Do you know how to fix this? I'm using RTX 4070TI so that should be fine.. tried reinstalling the program but it still doesn't work in viewport. Using latest 4.0.2 version.
Have you download my free setup file from gumroad polygonewithme.gumroad.com/
@@1polygonewithme the one with computer? yes, it doesn't work as well :\
They do need to fix issues with the node menu and what not. Not sure why they dumped every node in the node menu without proper categories. Also some of the editors are just a nightmare, no idea what to do there. Still wonder how they are able to render so fast using an external engine. I worked with external renderers before in Blender, always does it need to export objects and scene first. This one seems instantly
About 7 min in, I feel I would not want to use Octane. To me, the Cycles render looks far better, and takes less time. And It's built in.
Though later, the Subsurface did render faster in Octane. To me, the Cycles render looks better and is worth the extra bit of time.
Plus, I have an MSI RTX 2080ti Gaming X Trio, and am looking to get an all new PC with a RTX 5090, when they come out. So, I am not so worried about having to use Cycles, if I need to do any Subsurface rendering.
Good video.
Good for nice 👍
0:13 How did you make Blender look like that?
Going thru some videos of you about octane just too see if i need it, maybe dumb question but does it take more ram to use it, and how much heavy does it get cuz you have to fire octane and blender at the same time?
I have been using both for awhile now in Blender, mostly for baking lighting to textures and Octane's progressive render view is sooo helpful to see what's happening whereas with Blender it all happens invisibly which sucks. Octane's GI does look better and has more options for caustics and all that. Setting up shaders in Octane and switching between Octane/Cycles does suck though because you can't see the same shaders between both, you have to convert Cycles shaders to Octane shaders which can be slow if you're importing a bunch of assets. Also Octane seems to be bad at emissive materials and denoising, they drastically increase render times which is odd. Hopefully with Otoy's recent investment in Blender all of this stuff gets improved.
I can't set up octane to my blender 4.2 version
can you make tutorial about it
Octane does not support blender 4.2 yet, it will take some time.
I have no experience using Octane, but I don't know which of these two engines is better in terms of realism and physical correctness?
Octane
GOD I LOVE OCTANE!
🤓👍 me too I love them all if I could use them lol
1:00 scientifical 😭😭😭
I heard and seen many good things made with octane, but really have no desire using standalone Blender for it
Highlight of the whole video. 10:05
Thanks 👍
looks like cycles are more efficient regards to quality and speed
I think the Glass materials is the major drawback of Cycles, it's just doesn't look okay, with dispersion and complex refractions, it's still a bit of a trickery all the time. Am I wrong?
Octane Glass is absolutely amazing out of the box. The Shader Plus addon for cycles gives some nice results as well.
You should know something about rendering SSS on nvidia gpus. Thing is CUDA does not support SSS, these computations are done on CPU. I am not sure how this works with OptiX, but for CUDA its like that. I got this information from dude in contact with nvidia. Just checked it and our conversation is three years old now. So I wonder how is SSS rendered these days. Is it software or hardware accelareted?
CUDA and Optix work SSS!!! lol
octane results look a lot better
you can always tell the difference when something is rendered using cycles, it has this ... slightly un-polished look to it, where as octane is just a tad better. always. It's why the bigger mid-sized studios tend to still use it.
Something different about octane versus Cycles
@@1polygonewithme you can spot it. Octane just has sa more polished, more professional look to it. Cycles is nearly there, but still has this slight CGI look. Mostly evident on automotive renders
Octane 🔥 FTW!
Why there alot of disgusting stickers on video that dissapointing
🤭🙏🏾yep sorry
I would love to see a video about eevee next, it's powers and limitations.
some of us have potato computers 😅
Cool idea!
cycles no1
But... still no nested dielectrics support for Cycles. But yes for OR.
Not "1050 Ti GTX" but yes "GTX 1050 Ti". 😉 I've a RTX 4090 as current. I've YT videos about OctaneRender on old GTX 980 Ti and then now current GPU since november 2022. 🥰
Oh nice!
Does Octane have a future though? Cycles has the Blender foundation behind it... Is Octane going to be around?
What you don't also know is OTOY is now working with the blender foundation in providing a rendering networking system should be coming out soon
Are you American?
Yes from California but living in Japan 🗾🤓👍
haaa ;))) great !!! love your sens of humor and smart attitude !!! thank you very much ! you got me right at : IS it octane ? IS it Blender ? ;) ... And epic fail for me. I thought it was octane ;)) HAHAHAAA!!! and you're so right ! what the >>> BIIIIIP
The normals in Cycles aren't set up good
Thanks got it
32 megabytes of ram? Zero knowledge

Be kind bro 😊
Dude, your seconds were waaay too long. Just compare to the timecode, lol. That wasn´t 12 seconds. more like 20 XD
Ok sorry about that 🙏🏾
is more 15 seconds
yep sorry
There is no upload. Octane Server checks over the internet when you start it up and login. After that nothing else is sent over the internet. None of your scene data goes anywhere except from system memory, to the memory on the GPU,
You're one of the few people doing blender octane content, and I appreciate it. But you shoot from the hip and you've gotten numerous things wrong in various videos. But you present them as absolute fact.
Slow it down. And its cool to say "As far as I know"
