Really enjoy your Channel. Im a windsurfboardshaper. Question on color many times i get a reaction when doing spraypaint and the Epoxy hotcotcoat on top. 1. The paint just gets smoshie in the epoxi or I get a reaction where the epoxi does not fully cure and you can peel of the color. Any suggestions

      Hey hey, appreciate it!
Yup, my advice to you is to NEVER put paint underneath epoxy resin unless you absolutely have to.
Go to your local surf store, look at all the epoxy boards. See if you can find one with paint beneath glass and resin. You won’t. They’ll all be resin tints or paint on top.
If you absolutely MUST paint beneath your epoxy, water based paints only but, in case you couldn’t tell, I don’t recommend it 😆 🤙
Edit * the board in this video is poly resin, that’s why I’m able to paint beneath the glass

Do you seal your acrylic paint or do a cheater coat before laminating to prevent drainage or crystallized problems with the paint? Thanks

      Gday John,
No cheater coats or sealing, laminated straight over

Hey man awesome post as always
Love that ya got all artsy at the end with the video skillz
Howd you get the art in? Sacn and print on rice paper or another technique? Thanks

All the art was done by hand on rice paper and then laminated in. There's another video on my channel of a panda twinzer. The pandas were both drawn 100% by hand on rice paper. This one (flowers and the skull) were drawn digitally, then printed out onto rice paper and all the colour and detail was added with acrylic paints before lamination

Hey man, really like your content. Just wondering, do you have any resources you can recommend to beginners for glassing? Like recommended amounts of resin to use for shapes etc? Or is it just a trial and error?

      Heya man,
Try this link, there's a button on the page where you can save the document. I've never personally used the chart so not sure how accurate it is but, seeing as it's written by a pro Glasser I would mix a bit more than whatevers reccomended there.
      greenlightsurfsupply.com/blogs/news/32083843-new-surfboard-glassing-chart-resin-amounts-per-foot-of-board-length-for-epoxy-and-polyester-resins
If you give me your dimensions I'll have look in my book tomorrow when I'm at work and let you know what I've got written down. Buy a book and write down each boards dimensions and what you end up mixing for each stage and weather it was too much or not enough. Then you can refer to your book before glassing your next board for reference

@smallkinedings shot for the solid response man! Will definitely check it out, thanks man.
As for the shape, I'm still so lost as to what size I want to make. I'm thinking about like a 6ft3 fish or longer. Not really that good of a surfer yet, can surf a minimal but still improving, so want to make something nice and wide aswell, been browsing surfshops for shapes and sizes and seeing what looks good, planning to perhaps hire a few fishes and trying them out first. So many boards and sizes out there baffles my brain but anyway, really enjoy fixing ( emphasis on "fixing") dings and stuff so want to try and get more into shaping but still quite a newbie to it all.
But man I got to say, I haven't really gotten the best responses from people I spoke to, especially shapers, like man... chill, I'm not trying to take over the world, just some random advice would be great. Gate keeping is real! Thanks for the content tho! Apologies for the essay 😅

@@huizen9518 o man, things are about to get so good! The second board I ever made was a 5'8 mini sims. I had never ridden a board that short before. 7ft was the shortest I'd ever ridden (the first board I made). I borrowed a mates 5'8 fish and I only rode that while I built the mini Sims. It took me ages to build because I had no idea what I was doing 😂 by the time the mini Sims was finished, I had learnt to at least catch waves, pop up and go down the line on the 5'8 fish. My surfing improved massively during that build because I felt like I had to learn how to ride the board before I finished building it.
My reccomendation would be to make a fish, more of an old school one. Super flat, super wide and super thick. Borrow a board like you said and try and copy it, learn to surf the board while you're shaping it, you'll be extra motivated while surfing knowing that there's one being shaped back at home.
It's hard to mess up a fish, as long as you don't over sand it to a popsicle stick, it'll surf!

@smallkinedings Awesome! Will definitely give it a shot then. Who knows, might just film the process and upload for the masters to critique. 😆
      Thanks for advice man.👌

    Type of paint? Acrylic?

    • @smallkinedings
      @smallkinedings  8 месяцев назад

The sprays are "molotow" acrylics and the stain is just cheap old acrylic paints in a tube from and art shop 🤙
