  • After 20 years of pursuing his dream to explore the world, Ricardo Palomares set off on a 14,000-mile journey down the entire length of the Americas. Only upon reaching his destination 21 months later did he realize that the 20 years leading up to that moment were the most raw character-defining experiences of his life. He finally realized that it was always about the journey.
Ricardo went from having nothing but a big dream, to traveling around the world as an explorer. Through his openness, honesty, and vulnerability, Ricardo offers important stories from his life that taught him important lessons, and changed him forever.
Ricardo describes how he left home to pursue a life of adventure. He went from being broke and homeless to walking the famous Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage, and from being in bed with a major back injury to cycling down the Americas. By sharing what he learned along the way, Ricardo shows that we all can become more than we think.

Ricardo is a speaker, coach, explorer, and filmmaker. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico City after graduating from photography school with the singular focus of building a career that would allow me to explore the world. Later he earned a Film degree at the University of Texas at Austin, then he went on to create documentary work in Mexico and China, and make the famous pilgrimage Camino de Santiago in Spain. Ricardo's talk: We are more similar than what we think. My most recent project, Pedal South, entailed leading a team on a two-year expedition cycling from Alaska to Argentina making a documentary. Our goal was to share stories of the people across the Americas. One of the main things that I learned in the trip is that even tough we have some beautiful differences between each other across the continents, we are more similar than what we think.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
