Lol Simon was more attractive then Jace. Pretty sure that's an epic fail. They kind of make clary look weak and not agro enough, she needs more fire in her (if you know what i mean)

So do you think that valentine should have been play by someone who looks like Carlisle from twilight because in my opinion he had the same hair and pale skin I thought valentine would have what do you think?

One thing I was kind of angry about was how they said that the portals were natural phenomenons, because then if they ever make TID movies, there won't be the thing with Henry and Magnus...

I didn't like the movie, the actors were so flat... BUT one of the reason that make me read the books was the relation between Alec and Magnus, and I discovered that is a awesome saga, and I love it!! So, if in the future they decide make others movies I only expect that the actors put much effort in the plate.

I miss you, Kat, I love watching you talking passionately about things you love. It's not that I wanna tell you to come back, because if you're not making videos as much, there's probably a reason that's all your own, and I respect that. But I want you to know that I miss you.

I am beyond in love with the books... so when I was watching the movie... i was having my fan girl moments, but as soon as we left dorethea's place. It all went down hill. I mean i was so happy i was in the back of the theater, because no one could see me spasming and freaking out

Im on the beginning of city of glass and I thought the movie messed up when Hodge said "You can lie to the children" but now i know they're not related..
And also Valentine was supposed to be PALE BLONDE. Not black haired with dreads. ;(

Thank you! You basically had the same reaction as I did. Most people see flaws and immediately hate it. I honestly appreciated it as a movie itself. I even showed my dad the film (yes I bought it) and he really enjoyed it. I really agreed with almost everything you said except with the direct lines from the book into the movie. I actually felt having them actually saying it made it SUPER cheesy. I feel like the lines work much better in a reader's mind than it does in person. Also I liked Valentine's hair haha. My biggest complaint though was that Luke wasn't even involved with the ending fight with Valentine. In the book I absolutely loved the focus on the bad blood between the two former parabatai and the betrayal that Luke felt. Like the ending was THEIR fight, but in the movie, the ending was all about Valentine fighting Jace and Clary and Luke wasn't even there! Basically I felt like Luke kinda got pushed back in the movie and didn't get to necessarily be the prominent character he's meant to be. Also with the Hotel Dumort scene. It was a good action scene, but if I remember right in the book it's only Jace and Clary which makes it much more intense because she's not trained yet but Jace is. Having Isabelle and Alec with them in the movie made the battle a bit too easy but that's just a personal preference for myself. The battle was still really good though

I have a top 4 favorite scenes of this movie
1.that weren't real cops when Clary have and Simon are on the bus
    2. I was unconscious and you guys tattooed me, thought that only happens in Vegas
    3. I love the effects for the moonflowers when they bloomed although you don't get to see them for long because they just had to put that kiss in
    4. The party where have says by the way my hair is naturally blond
And what really disappointed me about the movie was that Simon came into her house instead of them jumping the fence to get to the book shop and have landing on Simon I was really looking forward to that scene.

As someone who hasn't read the books yet, I found the movie somewhat interesting but also confusing. I felt like certain plot points were glossed over and rushed past, so at times I wasn't clear what was going on or why. (For example, how did Simon not need his glasses anymore? Is he a vampire now? They alluded to that but never really clarified). I feel like I really need to read the books to understand the mythology better, which to me says they didn't do a very good job on the movie if I finished it feeling confused.

  • @purplehazee90
    @purplehazee90 11 лет назад

    Also,
I love how they used DIRECT QUOTES from the book and incorporated it into the movie. It was really nice as a fan of the book to recognize it, and they choose some good lines as well! I just thought it was pretty thoughtful of the writers to do that for the fans of the series. :]

This and Beautiful Creatures were the worst book book adaptations ever. My main problem with the movie are three words. Jamie. Campbell. Bower. I know alot of the fandom has come to love him, but he is not Jace. Sorry but he's not.

Katy you were spot on with everything you said. They rushed and changed things in the movie. But I kinda loved when Hodge said let them believe that they are bother and sister only because I haven't finished the second book yet and it made me feel a little better when he said that lol. But I kept waiting for you to mention the kiss between Jace& Clary omg I could watch that part over and over. And I loved the end when they drove off on the motorcycle and the part u said about Simon.

  • @almendrajosette

Can you please explain the ending scene after the fighting? When Jace was like,"You're still the bravest mundane I've ever met" and Clary was like dude I'm a shadow hunter and then gets on his motor cycle. I'm confused as to what that has to do with anything??

  • @CRIZZIEE
    @CRIZZIEE 11 лет назад

Darn, one of my favorite things about the movie was Valentine's braids. Gave him the "B, I'm Fabulous" look. Good review, I agree with you about 2/3 of the movie being on point and it kind of trailing off after that. I was so upset when they basically gave away the plot twist that Jace and Clary are not really related to the audience.

Elyas M'barek, german actor, played Raphael. He said that he had some lines but they were cut out of the movie. So sad, because I love him and I want him to have some lines in Hollywood. Hopefully they make a second movie and THEN maybe he will get some lines to say actually. :D

I loved the movie overall! Yes it wasn't perfect but there isn't a better feeling than having this book replayed in my head and now on screen. Some things weren't as I imagined them but I feel lucky that this movie was made. This is the first book that I've read that came out with a movie and I'm totally blown away.

Clary, Simon and Isabelle were AWESOME in the movie. Alec and Magnus were cool and they looked the parts but their personalities and stories weren't brought to life in the movie. Jace showed nothing of the most interesting and attractive parts of his character from the book in the film. He's supposed to be confident, headstrong, arrogant, pretty much an ass, and let's not forget strong and sexy. In the movie, he seemed sensitive and sweet right off the bat. What the hell!? Jace didn't even look the part. Put some meat on your bones, boy! He and Valentine (or should I say Capt Hook and Jack Sparrows' love child?) were the worst parts of this movie. The plot changes toward the end of the film were just confusing. HUGE spoiler when Hodge tells Valentine to lie about them being siblings. Cringe! And the first kiss... what on earth was that music playing?? Cheesy r&b pop. Can't handle it. LOVED the dialogue brought into the movie from the book. Definitely agree the Clary/Simon/Jace moments were very funny. I agree, I was on board in the beginning and then shit just hit the fan. Still was neat to see parts of the book brought to life and the environment and the demon ass-kicking was pretty cool (especially Isabelle!).

  • @amymitman173

I wanted to see Taki's and Raphael the most of what they cut out.
I thought the movie alone was great, great acting, great scene changes, great plot line
But it's too different from the books, or at least it is in no way what I was picturing in my head when I was reading it.
The part when Jace told Clary about the falcon was a good change, but I would've rather seen it as an original bed-time story. It would've explained their building relationship a little better.
They didn't have the vampire motercycles, but that I wasn't too hard on.
I did really want to see Simon as a rat
The part with Luke telling the story was great, I thought,
Books are always better than the movie though

I'm pretty sure there will be a second one; I saw on a link the TMI Facebook posted said filming starts next month!! And I totally agree about how Valentine looked.

I'm pro-movie 2 as well. I really enjoyed this first one. Yeah, like you said, there were things to nit-pick at, but I still want movie 2. And Valentine...let me say this: I love Jonathan Rhys Meyers. That man can do anything, and I love him. But I do have to say I was highly amused with the braids. They didn't totally irk me, but I did have to smile at them.

I Literally just finished city of bones last week and just finished watching the movie and i would say it was good the only downfall is they took some scenes off the path of the book i get it was not just to accomodate those that have read it but also to try attract people who had'nt to go out and buy it but in my opinon if they stuck to the book like clockwork it wouldnt mattered cause people who had'nt read it would of like it enough to get the book anyway now people that do decide to read it are gonna get a totally different perspective moral of the story of it is if your doing a book adaptation try and stick to the book as much as you can i dont know if anyone agrees?.

Why was the 'final battle' thingy set in the institute? Wasn't it supposed to be at an abandoned building were Valentine had holed himself up, or that a different book? Or am I making it up altogether? (I haven't read the books for a while and I get confused)

My big question is: WHERE DID IDRIS GO?
They just forgot to mention that the shadowhunters have their own hidden country or will it be excluded completely? I mean, the land is a pretty big part of the story..

The spoiler with Hodge and Valentine I didn't mind as much because I went with a friend who hasn't read the books and it totally went over her head. It was so brief that I think not many people picked up on it. Then I totally agree with Simon and the bite and how they just didn't mention it. I didn't mind mind Magnus and Alec much because if there are other movies they can get into their characters more. I liked Jace more than I thought I would, so yay! And OmG WTfF with the hair?

I loved the Movie. I have to admit, I was a little worried so purposely did not want to read the book before the movie. As I tend to get angry with movies if they are not as accurate as they could be. However I am now reading the book and have to say I like them both. And Jamie Cambell Bower is hot so no complaints there

Also I felt like Magnus didn't have much of a part, also! They didn't really give the story of Raphael!! I LOVED IT! I like Jamie Campbell Bower since he did "Sweeney Todd" and for me he always was perfect for Jace and still is. I am okay with the changes because I don't like to compare book & movie too much anyway. Just as the movie I really enjoyed it & I think that they made some of the changes to kinda finish the "movie" so that it wouldn't be that bad if they didn't continue the series.

Godfrey Gao (the actor who plays Magnus) speaks English as a second language and his first one is Chinese so I think that's why his acting was kind of off. I'm assuming he'll get better as the movies go on and he gets more experience acting in English.

I hope they come out with CoA. I love book Simon but I think I might be the only one who isn't obsessed with Robert Sheen. I was really impressed with Lily Collins & I liked Jamie. Kat! I agree with you, I really enjoyed the movie as well despite the fighting scene with Valentine which did not make any sense. Valentine never beat the crap out of his kids in this first book LOL. With the spoiler part at the end, I think they did that so those who haven't read the book won't be turned off by reading it or by watching the next movie, since incest is an uncomfortable topic. There were some people who didn't want to read CoA because they thought Clary and Jace were related.

Hated the movie's score, for the most part the music made some scenes really cheesy and hard to watch and it just didn't make sense with other scenes. But overall I really liked the movie. They gave away so many spoilers though, and I'm curious on how that will play out in future films (hopefully we'll get more). I don't think the movie is as bad as critics say and I really wish it had done better in the box office.

I actually agree with pretty much everything you said, although with Magnus I didn't think he was that bad - of course I could have just been distracted by how BEAUTIFUL HE IS. With Simon - wait... he has a vampire bite. And we're supposed to believe only Clary noticed this when he's been HALF NAKED around SHADOWHUNTERS?? I just. Maybe it's something they don't talk about. Like 'oh, by the way, you're a vampire' is a very taboo statement. Ah well. I'm interested to see what they will do next!

And they left out too much of the Alec and Magnus story!!

I think one of the reasons why the ending was the way it was, is because they were, in a way, setting up to not make City of Ashes. I think it's a smart move for all movies based on books to make. If you can kind of see the movie might not succeed, set it up where you can end the story in a stand alone format. Just my opinion, you can see all my reasons in my video on my channel. Not promoting, just saying.

I've read the first two, but I sort of know what happens in the third book. I accidentally spoiled it for myself.

I also liked the first 2/3 of the movie. My favorite scene was the green house one :) But i I hated the fact that Hodge told Valentine to lie about the sibling situation! It still bothers me even though it's 6 days sens i watched it! Great review!!

The movie is absolutely amazing. The cast, the characters, the plot, everything was perfect. Besides, unlike twilight, they didn't (or barely) used green screen. This movie is fantastic and all if you will only know how it really is if you watch it in the movie theater.

I loved Everything about it. Granted I watched the movie before reading the books. I honestly never realized Valentine had dreads. I'll have to go back and watch it. Lol But the actor that plays Jace (mwah!), I always picture Jace like that. I would love to see him in the next. I know this was posted 2013, but we can still hope. Lol

I agree with you I did not like Valentines hair in the movie. When I saw it I was like that doesn't match the description in the book. I also agree where Valentine comes in to play is were the movie went down hill. I liked in the movie during the whole fight scene at the end when Isabelle was hiding and Luke comes around the corner and she swings the sword she was carrying and stops a few inches away and said "I nearly killed you!" I thought that was really funny. I also liked at Java Joes in the movie in the alley way where Clary was holding the picture of the angelic rune and asking Jace why she was drawing it cause to the two people who couldn't see Jace I'm pretty sure they thought Clary had lost her mind.

Can we talk about the other things that were not sense making? Like, how Luke says downworlders are allowed in the Institute if they "stay in human form." Like what? No. And how Jace told that story about the falcon and then didn't remember Valentine. Like, if he remembers his father killed the bird how can he not remember him? Or how Jace evidently has a "block" yet you need a warlock to put a block and you have to have it reinforced every year. So how was it still there? Nothing made sense.

I watched the movie when it came out after I finished the first book and it spoiled me on the rest of the series and although I already suspected what it spoiled, that spoiler was almost rude in my opinion.

When I first saw the casting for this movie I was like, "yes, this IS Valentine," then they died his hair darker and added dreads...what?!? I liked how they had lines from the book, but honestly I was expecting more like "the other 10%" and "rid me of this pink drink and fetch me something brown," (or something along those lines) Isabelle's terrible cooking and Simon's crush on Issy. But I have a serious problem with the portal in the institute and that the last scene was at the institute.

I think the blue drink was so he wouldn't scream or something..? So that Clary, Magnus, Jace and Every Frikking Body At The Party wouldn't notice it and come after them, or trie the same idea.
I watched the movie before I read the book, even though I own it. Because when I saw "The Hunger Games" I didn't really think it was so good.. :( But I really loved this movie! I just sat there all the time thinking "This is a good movie"! And I think I would have loved it even if I'd read the book first.

So one of my favourite book series of all time is called “The Mortal Instruments” last year the movie came out and the response wasn’t as good as planned. The reason for that (in my opinion) wasn’t that they targeted the wrong audience, or that they did market it well enough you see the problem was that they changed the plot SO much that the plots were two different ones. If you saw the book but hadn’t read the movie and I asked you who Raphael was would you be able to tell me? If i asked you if Valentine got the cup true or false would you answer that correctly? The problem was the ENORMOUS plot change from book to movie and fans of the book didn’t like that their book was trashed. Word got out and less of the fandom went to see the book. Now they’re not sure wether or not they’re going to make the sequel “City of Ashes”. Now the reason for my long ass message was that I wanted to ask you something. If you’ve read the book and weren’t happy with the plot change would you go see the sequel if they got the plot and story line back on track? I know I sure as hell would because I love that series with everything i’ve got. Like i said they aren’t sure if they’re going to make a sequel and I wanted to get the word out that if they changed the story line back people would go see the movie so PLEASE IF YOU AGREE WITH ME PLEASE REBLOG, REPOST COMMENT OR ANYTHING TO SHOW THEM WE CARE! They check the internet so if we can spread this enough this might work. I know it’s far fetched but it’s worth a shot. Put this up on any social media site please! If you cared enough to read to the end of my rant then thank you and please help me

i loved when Jocelyn saw Clary talking to Simon, and Jocelyn told Clary to say hi to Simon, and Simon said "Call me." it was perfect. anyways great review, and i agree with you on Valentines dreads. theyre terrible......

I agree with absolutely everything you said :) I don't blame Jonathan at all for the way Valentine was portrayed though, that would have been down to the screen writers, etc. Other than the characterisation for Valentine and Magnus, I loved all of it. Except of course for all the things they changed in the ending... that was absolutely ridiculous and seemed unnecessary. Apparently they're starting filming for the second movie soon, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here :)

Great review! So manu of the reviews I've watched were very negative and I thought it was really good! Valentine's hair looked like it was going to fall out and it was ugly. Love the casting and Jocelyn and Izzy were both kick ass! So good. I hope CoA goes ahead:)

I liked the movie too, but there was stuff about it that I was disappointed in and kinda pissed me off. I was so mad about the spoilers. Although I kinda get why they chose to reveal that Jace and Clary aren't related, because it would most likely freak a lot of people out. They should have done a lot more world and character building. I was really disappointed in how Valentine was portrayed; he was completely over the top and he did not look the part. Ii'm looking forward to the second movie!

I loved the movie. I will agree towards the end they changed it, but other than that. I quite enjoyed the film. From what I've heard they are still on board with City of Ashes. Even a City of Glass, as long as the City of Ashes box office is better.

Being a fan of the books made me dislike the movie for those small things. What really bothered me was that block on Jace. Thee part where Clary drew the ruin to re-create her apartment. No Clary. You can't just do that. She doesn't even know about this talent until the CoA, and in the next books Clary basically is always living with Luke, so explain to me why she cleaned up her apartment. Jocelyn is asleep, so I don't think Clary can live at her apartment by herself. Where was Magnus's sass?

I loved the movie. For a book adaptation I think they did a good job. My favorite part of the books was the humor and I was so glade they put those lines into the movie. I was surprised the box office sells were so low with all the fans of the book out there. I really hope for a secant.
