I had same handle break on a 25 year old Murray mower. I slipped a 1" diameter, 3 inch long piece of copper tubing over the handle, then mated the broken flat piece back to the handle and "glued" with JB Weld. When this cured, I slid the copper mending sleeve down over the epoxyed repair, drilled 2 small holes on each side of the mend through the copper sleeve and the handle, used 2 small bolts through the drilled holes, then filled the gap between this copper sleeve and the handle with more JB Weld. I used a popsicle stick to force the JB Weld into and around this mending sleeve. After 24 hours curing, I put handle back on mower and finished my lawn. Your idea looks more factory original, but the design of these handles poses the problem of that narrowed flat piece which is an inherent weak spot. The copper sleeve, bolts, and JB Weld adds a measure of reinforcement to what is a weak spot on all lawn mower handles.

This actually worked. I went to Ace Hardware, and they had a 3 ft length of metal tube that perfectly fit in my KOBALT Electric Mower lower handle that broke off exactly where the handle broke in the video. It cost me about $20 to repair it and took about an hour.
Good video, I had the same idea to fix an old lawn mower with a broken handle so I could pass it on to my sister as her completely failed (the deck was so corroded it collapsed!). I figured something like this would work but good to see someone else trying it first. If the pipe is galvanized, depending on the paint it might need a primer no? Maybe just a warning for others that not all rust paints are good for galvanized metal.
Same problem happened to my Ryobi 6 year old battery mower, lucky the lower handle was 'only' AUD$42 so I bought a replacement ☺️ If the cost was horrendous like yours, your repair was quite useful.
I watched the video and found it very informative. I was curious how you got the conduit up thru the dimpled hole in the upper part of the handle.. You did explain how you did it, but it did not register in my brain. I am thinking you had to drill three holes to secure the conduit. two thru the handle and the conduit; and one thru the dimpled hole on the handle to catch the conduit you insert in the lower handle.
I actually cut the conduit so it stopped before it got to the dimpled hole. That's why I drilled 2 additional holes in the handle to make sure it was secure.
Nice solution. I have a flymo 460 sde that broke its handle. Its a really bad design with a heavy mower. 2 side arms attached to the deck with resin discs that attach them to a 1 piece handle . I think the design was made so you can lift the mower by lifting the handle up, pivoting the mower around the front wheels. You cannot push the handle down to pivot it on the back wheels lifting the front. The resin discs are adapted for a curved handle end. It was designed to fail.
@@thepiratehandyman2225 I managed to drill wood which split with a relatively small bore but survived with 3 x larger holes to attach it to the frame. I will see if I can drill metal. My initial attempts failed but I am not sure if I was practising on hardened steel. Thanks for the video.
Had to research this one a bit. It appears that you can only get to the nuts from underneath. They are located behind the blade housing. I got then for like 2 for $40.00. ONe site they were over $100.00 for the pair. Not me. No, no!

Aye, that depends on the brand. The best thing to do is go to the manufacturer's Website, click on the support link, put in your make and model, then search for the diagram of the handle.
Aye, lass, but first I have a question. Where the handle attaches to the mower deck, there should be a nub that sticks out sideways and keeps the handle from going down. Is the nub still there, and the handle is just going by the nub, or is the nub gone?

Craftsman model 917.370449 lower handle loose. Bolts go into the lower side. How do I tighten them under the mower deck? Thank you.

It depends on your current handle. It could be anything from 1/2 " to 3/4". I used aluminum conduit.
