I love his way of producing. Flaws are unique, they can bring a different dimension to a track. Bring your own flavour! Thats why we love you George.
Listening to this dude is very inspiring, and have just listened to his tunes, love them. Boom what a great find.
I could sit in the studio or dj booth and listen and learn from this dude all day!
he speaks truth. not much has happened in synthesis these days other than rebranding vintage stuff. get jedi with what you have. whether its software or hardware. nice video.
absolutely agree
Telekom Electronic Beats Really? I know this is 3 years old but the Novation Peak was pretty revolutionary imo. FPGAs are the future of digital synthesis.
@@ZombieLincoln666 came here to say peak
Yea absolutely nothing, Peaks, shitloads of innovative modular gear, elektron stuff, a bunch of new plug ins, huge advancements in computing. Yea no developments in the last decade except for vintage gear, lmao.
@@martti7363 Same sound though. The modular stuff looks impressive, but close your eyes and listen to what coming out of them. Plus you can count on one hand the people who are truly taking that type of sound as far as it can go and further. Its vintage sounds, Cheaper prices. Well especially in the case of behringer, which I feel is great for young musicians who can actually afford hardware now. But true innovations in the sounds synths and next level effects can make. I'd give the edge to some of the radical softsynths and softFX out there. But its more about the controllers today, those have actually come a long way. SOme interesting things happening with controllers and MIDI2.
Great talk. Especially the part about getting to know your gear. Rather have less gear that you know in and out than and a lot that's gonna gather dust... this guy talks truth and I love his music. Thanks for sharing.
Never been overly enamoured with his back catalogue, but I have to say, he seems like a lovely chap and I respect his approach to music production. Looking forward to hearing some of his new tunes.
he's really really about his preamps

thank you to your guy's channel, i love this Telekom Electronic Beats.
This is the most informative vid I have watched on youtube in relation to hardware set ups. AD DA , importance of preamps and recording in one daw and then using another like pro tools ( using outboard gear im guessing ) to mix and solidify . Nice !
I would love to see more from this dude.
+Bob Boheemoth There's a bunch more of our Tech Talks in this playlist (bit.ly/1SJyJOx) that you may find just as informative.
Many thanx m8 more pls
I respect this man
Fantastic advice given in this video 👍
What he's saying about preamps is spot on.
He’s the man talks so much sense
Brilliant :) interesting stuff and a mind opener, can't wait to see him Easter Sunday at Liquid Room Edinburgh with Alan Fitzpatrick and Green Velvet! What a bloody line up! Mon the techno khole sounds :D
awesome advice on imperfections & preamps
Real talk.
Anybody else notices that the music perfectly fits his talking at around 7:18 ? ..beautiful.
that was the plan ;)
I need to get a Zoom L8 to multitrack my playing and be able to modulate some things afterwards. Currently recording just to stereo and usually something comes in too intensely, all I need is a little mixing afterwards.
brilliant lad!
Brilliant video as always and George is a awesome guy ! Can you ask George about particular advice for stereo or mono chanell pre amp? Exact model for 1-2 K EUR max.
Man, that's eye opening if you're new to music production. Nice one :)
Any preamp recommendations then?
I run my hardware through an analogue Soundcraft desk then into Ableton via Apogee Element 88. I thought it sounded ok, but would be interested in hearing the difference with the introduction of a valve preamp.
Not sure that would work with Elektron's Rytym mkll running straight into Ableton via Overbridge though.
Anyone know his audio interface and midi interface mentioned at start? Absolutely love the video watched like ten times. Love the album too George
EB needs to start adding track lists for people who don't know these artsts. These songs are fantastic. Wish I knew what they were called.
throwingbacktheapple All tracks used are from Geroge's latest album Fading Love on Double Six/Domino Recordings
Absolutely very useful and inspiring videos.I am very sory to discover them just these days...
It‘s never too late 😉
@@ElectronicBeatsTV ❤️
very good lad
absolutely true you see a lot of these studios that are so over the top with easily 1000's of dollars worth of gear that maybe was used once or barley ever ..... well said
Very cool guy
i wish there was a way to use synths as effects like Halion, Falcon, Omnisphere for their filters. But lucky you can record and import into the synths. But you can with the real moog right? Can you use a moog as an effect? record your synths and import them into the synths vst i mentioned because of their filters.
@ElectronicBeatsTV @6:11 Why is he talking about preamps in the context of synths? As i know all the synths have line outputs. Was he talking about pluging a line level synth into a preamp? Or he started to talk about mics and the mics part of the video was edited out. Am I missing something in the regard of preamps use?
Looking forward for your reply.
Thanks in advance!
I think i'll buy a preamp... never thought about that.
Nice
Apparently I should buy some preamps. Seems like his perspective is that transparent preamps are bad, which is not true. That’s what you want on an audio interface
Pretty sure he said the opposite of what you believe he said, and therefore agrees with your point.
Track id in 05.30 thx
7:10 what's the 4 channel preamp he is referring to?
UA-4710d, he has one in his rack that you can see, it's the silver one
Pretty much sums it up at 7:31
What studio monitors does George use in this video ?
luke cadden Dynaudio BM5A's.
I dont het why you should "pre-amp" synths. Is it just the colour you ad? Why not going with a saturation?
Classy preamps sound classy, plain and simple.
I took some time to figure it out, coz i am in the middleground right now. It seems that phisical gear/analog stuff adds harmonics of different type that are many times not in the range of hearing but in a range where our body can percieve it and our body likes those vibrations... also, bulbs/transformer/tubes are basically converting the signal adding the golden ratio "allignment" on spectral plane of the sound, if can you imagine pineapple geometry translated into the sound. Guys who invented those things were in Teslas IQ range/wisdom..
He says you gotta get your hands on hardware and I like the idea, it surely must be more intuitive and fun ...but really it is a huge and risky investment. That's why people start with computers and go on from there, it doesn't mean they're afraid..
I can hear your voice trembling.
6:59 “The great river things... I mean I’m gonna get some great river things”. Anyone know what he’s talking about?
Great River is a brand of studio outboard 🙂
which synth ( and which pedals ) did he use to make that leadmelodie at 1:17 ?
felix p juno 60
are u sure? in the video its a juno, and its sounds like an strongly modulated one.. hmm. u vegot an idea which pedals he used to detune and '...' the sound ? thx anyway
felix p i really can't say, sorry
What is the instrument he's using at 4:15 through 5:03?
+Esav _ Moog Sub Phatty
anyone can advice what is the difference between mic pre amp and pre amp?
A pre amp is used to amplify the sound. Whether coming from a microphone or other source. In the case of the synthesizer, in addition and perhaps even more important is the coloration that it gives to the sound. In this case, each specific preamp has its own characteristic. Like a Neve preamp or a API preamp/
A preamp TECHNICALLY is to reach line level from mic level. Usually what you have from lowest volume to highest: mic - instrument - line - speaker levels. Now if we're talking about synths you don't really need a preamp, because its usually already at line level. You can just record it directly with an interface with a line in (so most interfaces). But quality preamps add a tone to the sound which might be pleasing.
What preamp did George recommend on 7:09 ? Just can't understand, I am not a native speaker
Nick Kasabian he mentions the Great River Preamps www.greweb.com/
Electronic Beats Yeah, thank you very much. I just can't understand what exactly model ( he's talking about 4 channels...) May you "subtitle" his words from 7:09 to 7:13 for me! Sorry for the stupid question, I'm Russian haha
he doesn't mention any specific model, Great River only make single channel, 2 channel or module preamps www.greweb.com/microphone-
preamps.html
Nick Kasabian the four channel he's referring to earlier is the Universal Audio 4-710d
discotechwreck yeah, that's what he's currently using but wants to upgrade to Great River
Is it easier to bounce everything to another daw, instead of doing it in ableton?
DAUBSKI not easier, its just a different approach. You can do everything related to mixing/mastering in Ableton, its just that some producers like to move to different DAW for the mixing stage for a different perspective and/or more convenient enviorment for mixing and routing.
Ableton works a little different then DAWs like ProTools or Logic when it comes to routing signals, sidechaining and grouping things
"All preamps in all interfaces are s@#t" - He has just earned my respect.
Edit: Wise words!
Elektron Monomachine!
Everyone should have one
What is that preamp he talks about?
bruv bruh he mentions the Great River Preamps www.greweb.com/
fuck hes talented.
+Brent Pleasance and a top man!
tracklist??
Knife to the Heart, and Your Two faces...
Ha, exactly.
Push those synths to the limit and back again. I'm well Jealous now. Please let me come and sample / Jam with you.. I'll bring a costa or two :D
Everything he says is true.
Piton!
909 sounds crap. Definitely I felt exactly the same about my Moog Sub 37 until it went through an effects chain. Good on you!
?
Alpha State what it says on the tin. External production makes the track.
@@fantasyproduct1042 I wouldn't say the Sub37 sounds crap but add some effects to it and it really starts to roar
@@fantasyproduct1042 11 months late in replying. First point the 909 statement is completely subjective, personally I think it sounds great raw and unprocessed. Secondly production is the icing on the cake. Composition is key. you can apply all the pre amps and expensive outboard in the world to track and still end up with an over produced polished turd. Some uncharitable souls may suggest that Mr Fitgeralds track playing in the background (with its pedestrian rhythm and uninteresting lines) fits that mould
@@RoomAtTheTopStudio the only criticism I have of the sub/subsequent I have is that 70% of people use it the same way with the same presets. It’s nice to see when people use it differently
I'm perfectly happy with my UA Apollo twin thank you maybe if i had $10,000 to spend i will buy a pre amp but right now i have to pay bills. Wonder how George paid for his studio..
Its called robbing banks and its exhilarating.
These poor kids!
If a clean tr909 won t het the crowd moving, what will…
I & my girlfriend love you !!!!
he's actually a genius
I know a decent amount about Ableton but not as much as this lad
Preamps in interfaces don't sound like shit. They don't sound like anything. That's the point. You shouldn't rely on preamps to make your tone and music interesting. They add some color, but they don't have as big of an effect as stuff like using an analog console (or channel strip plugin), using analog compressors, analog eq's (especially), using tape machines etc. A preamp on synths is really a double edges sword, because what you do is basically add noise AND some tone/saturation. As the line output of most synths is already high enough for recording, you need to turn it down first, meaning you raise the noise floor too. Sure you can talk about "quality preamps" like everything else is shit, but a "quality preamp" starts at $1000, not something many people can afford for just simply adding some tone which you can do later in various ways. Spend your money on a quality interface first, THEN get some good plugins. Forget Waves or Slate, get Acustica or UAD.
Lol
i was so disappointed to go and hear his music and it doesn't sound as interesting and homegrown and electronically
organic as he expressed it in this video..but that being said his music is still very nice i just was expecting it to be as honest as he expressed it his music sounds good but unfortunately it DOES sound like everything else in that style of popular electronic music…IMO
+stealthyBLK We're all allowed our opinions, that's the beauty of music :) That said, I think if you hear some of his earlier, more clubby tunes, compared to that of the album, you'll see, and hear, maturity and the benefits of the different approaches to production, which we can agree, from this Tech Talk are bang on.
+Telekom Electronic Beats ok fair enough, i had a listen to couple of his releases but i'll have a more of a listen to his discography. ive just found over the years a lot of articles/interviews of artist have described there music and editors expressing a particular style and it rarely translates to what I've read/heard….but that being said , i love this channel and all that you guys do as an Imprint and all of these videos have been really great interviews (including Mr fitzgeralds) also I've discovered a couple artist I've never heard and like them as well…so thank you . keep it coming
the result is all that matter....
and bass guitar is way more powerful than a mono synth
