  • "People often use the word 'effortless' with our system. (...) We've always thought that was a good thing to go for. It's like a patrol engine. They're typically only 25 to 30% efficient, and when you get another 10% and it's all over the place. Soundsystems are about the same." I have had the Highest End stuff in and out of my house to the point where I designed my own speakers( old school fashion).goal: to build a dynamic 6 1/2" two way that will rival a pair of Quad ESL 57's! My tube amp designing friend initially laughed at me.I settled on a thin paper cone midbass driver and a ribbon tweeter back in the 90's when manufacturers were all still using dome tweeters (except pro stuff).the dome tweeter set back Audio 50yrs!! The trick was creating an absolute seamless transition from midbass to tweeter.

Yes, been to several events and clubs with Funktion-One, and they are a bit lower in upper-mid nastiness than some of the cheaper horn systems out there. However, event their best in 2021-2022 does not compare, or come close to high fidelity. Harsh, fatiguing and having all sorts of issues compared to a great non-horn loaded or related system. Even some of the hybrids like L-Acoustics, D&B and others blow away Function One. Like most of the stuff out there based on horns, these systems need help if we are to have anything approaching great fidelity that does not leave your ears and soul hurting.

I am stunned by how well this man has articulated my exact thoughts.
Not even 10% of the DJ's I've discussed this with have been on the same page.
It's only a small minority of people that would even consider these factors important.
I have been in countless debates throughout my life
regarding every single point he touched on, very rarely having any positive results.
I've received a lot of negative backlash due to having these opinions,
from friends, family, even from established professionals.
I can't really put into words how this video has made me feel, but I can
honestly say this is the most proud I have been with myself in my entire life.
Slightly overly dramatic comment I'm sure, but this means a lot too me for a a whole slue of reasons.

I've rarely heard his systems when they're not being pushed to their edge. Having all that spare capability is useless if it's already too loud and still pushed to their limits to the point of starting to misbehave.
100 watts of sound wouldn't kill you.
Speed of sound in the material is not that important.
Humans can only hear 20bit/48khz, and the rest is processing headroom and low-pass filters choices.
It's a lot easier to get great sound from a digital mixer compared to analog.
Funktion One now uses DSPs, and as such it's easier to just use digital and connect digitally.
I don't disagree with much of the rest of what he said about the room treatments or most DJs not being audiophiles or sound engineers.

In fact, i challenge anyone to go to your local funktion one equipped dancefloor and see if you can hear the difference between a 320mbps mp3 and a 44.1khz wav. I would be very suprised if you can

He is right about the MP3 problem but also cites CD as being below the standard we should have, Phillips brought out a much higher resolution SACD which failed in the market unfortunately (it was inconvenient it seems for consumers) which now does not leave much choice on the playback front, live instruments of course are very different so could it be back to vinyl!

I love 99% of what he said; but I don't think he's exactly correct about 24bit/96khz. Amplifiers/DACs don't really accurately output 24bits of resolution even on the very high end. It's not necessary and doesn't really improve playback. It does improve digital mixing/mastering though.

    • @ArizerExtreme
      @ArizerExtreme 10 месяцев назад

LMAO, u are funny, i'm 27 yo, and i'm sure i know well better the subject than you, funktion one is one of the worst in price/performance, there is actually a lot of very good speaker, and amplifier, Andrews is a seller doing his marketing, and it work, all people i know and know very well in sound system, know F1 isn't a good choice, it's just Hype for people like you, you must really know nothing in sound system to think new amplifier and speaker are bad, there is plenty new technology in sub kick for example like paraflexes, and a tons of T3V as good or better than this... just look on sound agency (i'm french it's an entreprise in my country) the SA3V-1581 ... the spectrum and dispersion is wayyy more interesting than f1, and i will not talk about the price. BTW, the distortion on class D isn't noticeable at all, another proof you know absolutely nothing about what you are talking about.
Also technics isn't any better than numeric, it's the opposite, there is a distortion, transcients lacks on the technics and more noise you dont have on numeric... so you are wrong everywhere, well done kid
And because we are talking about sound system, we will not even talk about line array... i saw funktiun one at boom festival, they fired it for D&B, because it's better, i know it's not comparable, and it is, just to add to your trash arguiment that what we do today is bad, sound systems and line array are in a extremely good situation, and amplifier in china (D420 morin, and K30 morin all class D) now are very close same quality as crown (AB), for bass china are better in electronic music, for certains types of others musics crown remain better, i'm sorry for you, in electronic music they are better... i know it's hard if you are american or english from hearing that chinese is better, but it's the reality, and you need a looooot money to do the same thing on AB... Not all people has the money and it's not worth it now, there is also new class AB+T like CK26 amplifier from yndpoweramplifier, which is i think the best i know actually

How Well Can You Hear Audio Quality? (Google) There are different songs with 128k 320k and Wav. With good equipment you can hear the difference. I would say there is more headroom. And even IF this one man has such a system (or ANY sytem) in his room, the first, the absolutely first thing you inmproove is the room-acoustics! And exactly this is what Leave The World Behind talks about.

@D. A. Bullshit. The only reason 32bit float is all over the place is because it's used in applications far beyond audio and is therefore ubiquitous and cheap. People aren't coding 32bit float stuff from scratch. They're licensing the code from somewhere else.

Distortion can be desirable for audiophiles. There are audiophiles that swear off the insanely expensive ultra high end home audio speakers because the sound is just way too accurate for their tastes.

Sound Quality has degraded somewhat since the introduction of MP3's into the market (not to say sound has got worse just that the general levels of accepted quality has been lowered) this is to do with bit depth and sample rate. This guy may sound like a douche to you but he knows what he's talking about and that probably makes you feel inadequate!

I think I heard a Funktion system at Roxy's in NYC, and I did not think it matched the Richard Long system there before. I might be wrong who that system was designed by, yet I do agree these new systems are extra Garbage. In here, in my studio, I use a time delay, passive speakers , power amps, and of course my turntables/vinyl. I would like to know what DJ mixers he likes, which needles, etc, etc, he suggests.. I run everything as flat as possible and would rather use processing other than EQs when I am spinning...I think MP3 sucks..Beats headphones..NOT...

🙌🏼 I have been fortunate to play my music n sound all over Britain & Europe and I will say F1 is the total nuts. I played vinyl in a F1 system and fudge me it was another level. He forgot to mention the sound engineer ?? Who is instrumental. I was a resident at ministry of sound in the the early 2000’s and the engineers fucked the sound for about a month n half before they could get it right. So what I’m saying is they fucked it so the sound engineer is very important.

Unless someone goes full analog from the get go - I.e. all analog synths/drum machine/Iive instruments - direct to tape then mix down to tape again with masters being printed to tape and then cut vinyl directly from tape , you’re going to end up in digital land at some point. At this point, it totally makes sense for everything to be 96/24, hdd are cheap, internet is fast, why not? But unfortunately most of the music released in the last 10 years I’ve had a hard time finding in 24bit, not to mention its expensive to cut vinyl and not as many people are playing vinyl these days. I would 100% pay at $1 a song for 24bit files of my 500 track library I have right now. Maybe someday! If there were more clubs out there that had ridiculously good sounding systems with resident djs that knew there shit maybe more people would demand it?

My friend, I'll explain. It's not compact enough. You might think that you're getting all of it, but you don't. 😉 Think about that. It's very hard to direct sound, if you know what I mean. To compact it so well in a speaker and to push it perfectly to your face, though it's done alright, if you would get 100 watts of musical power in your face, your head will pop. It's not electrical power he's actually talking about, but instead musical power and that's a whole different problem to discuss about.

It will be about 129 dB SPL at 1 metre for an omnidirectional source. If your speaker radiates at 1 steradian (65 degree dispersion angle), then that goes up to 140dB SPL, so death is unlikely, but deafness is quite possible. If you got closer than 1 metre and piped it into a helmet or around a vital organ though I'm not sure.

I had a great teacher once in school or highschool, he used to say that we have to keep quiet in class, at least when we're at school. He argued with stupid kids who were making fun of this. One day he got angry and said: "You think you're smart? You think being quiet is useless? You're wrong! Noise drains you the most! Noise! And the quickest. It's very important to not disturb the silence or calmness of the environment if you want to have energy.
