There are audiophiles, and then there’s Tony Andrews. He has been building PAs since the days the heyday of Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies. Today his Funktion-One sound systems are the in-house sound of the world’s best clubs.
During his in-depth lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, he talks about the curse of line arrays, how to prevent the chainsaw effect and why the iPod has ruined our ears.

Right? It's kind of a funny joke; I had to walk over to my Marantz 2325 and smash the hi filter, low filter, hi blend, and loudness buttons, knock the highs down a bit, and crank the volume all the way up (12 0'clock position) to make this listenable.

Some DJ''s can't understand that the sound does not get louder in the red (because of the limiters). I remember at a Distortion festival in Copenhagen, where I had my sound system out. Several DJ's playing. Clearly difference in sound. Some used a bad soundcard on their set, and it f*cked the sound. Some used the clean CDJ-2000 + A/H soundpath, and is was night and day from the laptop/serato audio.
Also I remember several times I got up stage, turned the gain knob down so it hardly peaked in the red (better dynamics, less limiting). I told the DJ's: I did some magic..! Feel it.. The bass is at least as powerful out of the red ;)

Tony Andrew's certainly wouldn't have been responsible for uploading a poor audio quality interview, he always argues that mp3 / internet quality audio so sub standard, but if we over look that fact the man knows what he's talking about, I was lucky enough to meet him once in the early 1980s, he was 25 years ahead of everyone else then and still 25 years ahead of the game now,

Him and Funktion one partnered with Tipper for a show at Red Rocks Ampitheatre. They had what I thought was a F-one line array but I must be mistaken. Unless this interview was well before 2015 when I saw the show and they developed such a systems. Anyways, Tony was the live sound engineer for the entire night and the sound was absolutely amazing.

I really do prefer RME audio interfaces over Apogees any given day. Prism is alright, but quite expensive. RME's support, even after decades, is solid and reliable. Wonderful company, without all the hype surrounding both Apogee and Prism Sound.

Klipsh speakers sound good to many ears (little to much Smiley sound for me). I prefer my old Sansui SP-X8000 in my living room. I do like Funktion One (and other "old" big PS high efficiency designs). But many don't use F-one properly (the less DSP-tweaking the better). One should correct the acoustics physically. The DSP/EQ correction is not the best way to correct a physical acoustics problem. Funktion one speakers unfortunately reproduce the "problem" with DSP correction. That is the problem with those speakers, and why not all can make "good sound" with them. If you speakers are transparent, they will reproduce Everything! Good and Bad. EQ's are a compromise, one should avoid if possible! (crossovers are a compromise, but something that has to be used since no speaker kan do 20-20.000 Hz with high enough output)
I totally agree with Tony regarding digital advantages (and misuse)
Fun fact.. After the Cassette Tape got obsolete and was retired because of digital replacement, the loudness wars really hit (The compression processing, that Would have been useful with the Cassette Tape hizz) Counter productive to digital. Digital has great usable dynamic range. But the max is 0dB, or it breaks the sound. If you want "overdrive" you have to go analog.
Foobar is great. What comes in, comes out. Never heard of it before Tony Andrews mentioned it.

Nice lecture but massive shame the Sound quality of it being uploaded is so poor. Quite funny really as that was what is about.

  • @cartossin

There is not 130db of dynamic range to human hearing. I'd also say that even 110db isn't really "usable" because even this causes hearing loss. I'd say we have more like 90-95db of usable dynamic range because above that and we're wearing hearing protection which would make us unable to hear the 0db part of that signal once again. From the wikipedia on dynamic range "The dynamic range of music as normally perceived in a concert hall is 80db.

So when asked the difference between analogue and digital he answers like a politician. Digital sounds more harsh because its a square switching wave form, the sine wave is constructed of 1's and 0's. Analogue is a smooth optimal construct of the sine wave.

DJM-800. Great DJ features, bad audio reproduction Both digital and analog into it.
Use the CDJ-2000 D/A and a good Hi-Level, Formula or A-H mixer is much better sound-wise that the crappy preamp in the DJM mixer.
As a DJ, I had an ambivalent relationship with the DJM-800 Mixer. It was durable and great to Work on. But yes..it compromised the audio - and it was a problem to me with High SPL (harsh-edged high-end that has no "air" = one get tired in the ear).
I did have a nice sound system (Not F-one, but some people though it was, due to the basshorn design and the clean sound), and Normally that system was used with the DJM-800 :(
First time I heard an A-H mixer on it (also CDJ-2000), I noticed that it could actually sound pleasant to the ear at very High SPL (when the source track was good). That is the downside of having good hearing. You really notice bad audio, and can't live with it once you heard the good stuff. I don't even like "loudnesss/smiley" sound, that many does.

Mp3 sucks at 128kbps, but at a certain bitrate, you can't hear the difference between lossless and mp3. Also newer lossy codecs are better at lower bitrates than mp3.

But music isn't just about what the ears can hear. Sound is vibrations which are picked up in the ear and interpreted as music. But those same vibrations are also experienced in the cells of the body. Deaf people can and do experience music, albeit not the way hearing people do. Blokes. Their thinking is so linear. Music isn't JUST about what you hear with the ears. Good music, good sound is an all encompassing experience.

@RedbullMusicAcademy. First bring back RBMA, second, this production value is poor, opportunity lost. C'mon RBMA, you are capturing culturally significant histories and discourse, treat that with the functional respect of quality capture. You are unique in the space by supporting such diverse subcultures, an interview like this... you can do better.
