- Gavin Lynch aka Matador has a studio in Dublin with a simply inspirational view. In this Tech Talk here on Telekom Electronic Beats TV we visit the producer and RUKUS label founder to hear about the production methods behind tracks on Minus, Cocoon, Perc Trax and more. This is both inspirational and envy provoking simultaneously. Thanks for taking the time to make this video Gavin and TEB!
Anyone know where he went to college
Such a humble guy and lovely music to my senses. Respect!!
All this series of videos are just gold, when Im stuck at the studio, for sure I watch one of the videos and get insta inspiration.Big fan
as a graphic designer I understand exactly what you mean man :D big up matador
Yeaa! I do the same, I want to rich that level one day, you probably too my friend. Cheers
This is quite surprising. I love how he takes care of very specific things such as which pre-amp is using on which drum machine and slight compressing them before the record stage. This is what basically becomes "your sound" regardless of what timeless drum machine you're using and re-using, as long as you make them yours they'll never grow old.
or what timeless $$$$ preamp or comp...
Well actually it doesn’t matter too much. It is just more of a habit. No one will hear any difference.
@@arjanpetersen so true.
I like that kind of gear because it limits what I can do. Thousands of presets on plug ins is too much for me.
First of all, I really appreciate the effort that goes into putting this content out.
Now...I would appreciate highlighting some more minimal, conservative (frugal) studios, which can still be set up in inspiring and insightful ways, and most importantly, can produce great music. I can imagine a well-developed studio under $10k total. Most expensive thing is the laptop. There must be many studios like this. (Mine)
Especially because the music in this video sounds like it came straight out of a daw.
If anything, why not show live footage of him putting things through the manley. Sometimes these videos are a little too streamlined, jumping from cut to cut, showing flashing lights of the equipment, when what would also be nice is just live footage with diegetic sound. Maybe 5 minutes of different demonstrations.
Very good idea here Tech Talk. Include smaller less expensive studios and show how the artist actually works with his instruments.
Yeah and most of all lot of "little" home studio or even God musicians with just a MBP and a DT770 produce songs that sound much better than this.. it is nice to the eyes to see all the greatest analog old school gear we can dream of
But if it's to sound like basics daw kit...
Go check skinnerbox those two for exemple with just a miniMoog and often a digitakt produce live that sound massive (even if it's a bit raw)
And I can't remember the name of that guy but the tracks he produce sounded so analog and huge bass synthwave that I just fixed my goal to sound that well with my analogs synth... What a disappointement when I discovered that he was producing only with a laptop and a midi keyboard ......
LOLOLO We are talking about one of the biggest companies in the world and you act like this would be made by an artist.
@@PARANDROID biggest company of the world?
The best music is created with minimal gear. Look at any successful music producer, Daft Punk, Armand Van Helden, Kraftwerk, Prodigy, Chem Brothers, etc.. they all started with very little and made something out of it. Damn, Drake's making music with rubbermaid garbage cans and he's rolling big time !
I come back to this video often, it's just beautiful.
what he said about his levels and gain staging from the get go is the number one production tip
Get comfortable working at low levels...been my life for the last few years. And I’m mostly traveling for work, so my studio is on the go. One day I will have my set up look like this. Looks like heaven. I could sit in there all day.
you will have to work veeeeery hard .. 0.0
That is old school. With modern daw’s it doesn’t matter too much. Way more headroom. In older days -18 was a way to go indeed.
Corkonian here , down in midleton.
Love your talent and the set up .
You make me feel normal , I spend a lot on equipment. I dont smoke or drink so that's my drug so to speak.
More power to ya , hope you get a major film score contract. 👍.
I like this guy. Real studio folk.
I heard him on Transitions for the first time and then I fall in love with a track he played from "OC & Verde - solstice" and THEN he was about to play at CRSSD with Digweed and I had to go and see it. He definitely put a better set than Digweed... I loved it.
What's extraordinary is the creativity some people are able express with so much less. For example, on RUclips >> Electric Independence: Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) - Motherboard clip
It’s all about talent and creativity. Gear is just a tool.
Some people are happy with one car, others have 5 or 6. It doesn’t make them better drivers but as long as they enjoy (and can afford) it....
The track starting around the two minute mark is fantastic.
What a nice guy with a healthy obsession!
Someone speaking about their approach is sooooo helpful my god thank you
man., this setup scared me. obviously just the best.
I am a fan since the first minus releases.. Oh good God Matador evolved sooo much! Love and respect for this dude!
Incredible space. Inspirational vibes. Respect.
Bruh that 5088 console is the real flex
wow what a studio! Thanks again for another great video! Between this and the Kenny Larkin studio there is a lot to aspire to!
Both studios are dope!
Gorgeous studio, awesome energy, wise words. Thanks for sharing.
This is a very well put together video, very motivational and I'm looking forward to producing now. well done champ! =)
I just started its a bit overwhelming at first just dont give up
Exceptional sound and exceptional studio. Thanks for sharing your insights.
oooh man, Matadors Studio is 🙌🏻❤️
"...how many pen do you have in the office, or how much paper do you have? It's irrelevant...because all you have to do is write." This. Just like Hans Zimmer said: "Ideas are not limited by budget, the creative process takes place in your head."
Love the Devilfish modded TB303!
Sherman Filterbank! I was waiting for it to get introduced. Great video though and that sure is a beautiful studio!
BXLrules love my Filterbank. I have the same one.
The Filterbank 2 Compact.
It’s so amazing and sometimes untamable and full of happy accidents
Awww the dog at the end tho!
Gorgeous studio
Love the way he talks about the Apogee converters - that got me wondering what *exactly* he is using? 🤤🤔
Lotta skank probably 😅
@@tameracz THANKS!! I keep trying to up my recording game. I'm at home studio level, and keep looking for ways to improve. His passion for the sound *quality* matches mine.... These are so expensive, going to research them anyway - Really Appreciate the info, Thomas! 😀 👊
What’s the fcking track at the beginning?! Can’t find it for years now
Did you find it ?
That was a lot of great advice! Thanks!
Holy crap! Amazing!
Super smart advices about gains. As always good video ! Keep it going Telecom Beats team !
the vocal sample @5:59 is the same voice as from biceps apricots but a lower octave and other delay. :)
Many thanks, guys for your such nice work of making this kind of content.. keep up the good work. cheers
Great studio! Great video.
Well of course it's breathtaking. There's a Moog One in the room.
what about the CS80 ;)
My absolute dream
You are not alone
FUCKING RELEASE THIS SONG AT THE BEGINNING MATADOR!!
BEEN NEEDING IT FOR YEARS NOW AND MY EARS AND MIND NEED IT
Love it! He's such a nerd :)
Checked out his tune called Shamen to see if he was putting all this gear to good use. Gotta say yeah .
Moog One, CS-80... Okay, I've seen enough 🤯
Great studio setup and great advice !
Top man, brilliant insight🙏
From what I could pick up here, I gather this musician has this 'touch'...rather unique sound and after having seen this very fine vid, I understand it all, it all just blends together...it all fits perfectly. An artist, who's intentions are, to make just a beautiful product.
Great studio 👍 Thanks for sharing 😎
I want to go to there.
First track ID please?
Same. What’s the track?
Anyone found it?

Anybody found it yet?
I never heard about this guy in my life but I lived 10 years in Ireland in Dublin. Is he hiding in a cave somewhere? He must be famous on other name because his studio looks serious.
He seemed to bypass national fame and went on to be one of the biggest names in minimal/live techno..... Other Irish DJs like Mano le Tough and Annie Mac followed a similar path strangely enough.
He is one of the biggest producers in the world. Apparently you have no clue...
what a pro!
WHAT!!!.... over a year ago just 1 or 2 synths and now this?
Or this setup: ruclips.net/video/Q5hgQTEf0mg/видео.html
@kosmikmusa over the years. In one year is nonsense
1 or 2 chosen synths, chosen out of many synths, just in this room
Ok. Now I got it. Heard totally something else.
I was a bit worried.
@@kosmikmusa no probs. I sometimes struggle with understanding Irish accent. Not used to it as much as used to English or American, for example.
loved this
😲 amazing space
I pray to the synth gods to have a shrine to worship.. like this😢
Awesome🎶🎹🎼
IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE INTRO SONG?!?!
Have you found it yet ??
Awesome content! A true artist Right here. Tracks id's anyone?
I want to buy some music this guy has made. What’s a good album to get?
this dude turned all the lights on for the show
No light, no video 😉
Genius
Proper studio
Gavin is so nice guy, telling a lot of useful tips ! Thank you !
love these
Would pay a lot for this intro track
Cute studio dog!
What a lord! Good tips
I wonder will there ever be a viedo series about how they've earnt so much money to afford all those boxes!? ;)
Working, credit, playing live a lot....?
@@ElectronicBeatsTV thats one possibility. he´s a lovely guy but we´re talking SERIOUS money here like for sure 200k. console is 100k. maybe rather 300k for all.
You know the fees nowadays, right? And you don‘t buy all that gear in one month.
@@ElectronicBeatsTV been touring internationally since the mid 90s - i do know the fees. but also dont feel like getting into a discussion about something this unimportant.
@@ElectronicBeatsTV true, he did it in 12.
Track ID at 5:50 please somebody must know
Awesome!
What's the track at 2:00 ?
Unreal
awesome vid
what song is the intro played?
Here I am wondering how to connect my 808 to my computer
Sherman Filterbank within reach, at least that we have in common:) beautiful studio!
The most envious part of his place is big window looking outside.
Nice!
Funny how all those people with massive studios filled to the brim with tons of vintage analogue equipment, all produce fairly simple club music that could be made almost as good with a laptop from Aldi...
@@blablubs5596 You saying it doesn't happen?
Exactly
@@blablubs5596 If you think you need hardware to produce professional sounding electronic music in 2019, you know nothing about the scene. Yes, analogue equipment can sound fantastic , but nowadays, you can more or less sound like Vangelis with a decent laptop running Ableton Live and some choice softsynths. Real gear sounds better. But the lines are getting blurred.
Not quite sure what made you lol 😂 can't find the comment
Sure dude. Same analogy as people driving big cars can’t drive. In any case you still have a small tiny car. Off course you get from a to b ... Anyhow it is your problem not his problem. Your mental mindset is flawed.
Id of track at @1:45 ?
.
I love hearing Gavin Lynch talk. Smart guy, super articulate and unbelievably knowledgeable. You can learn a lot from him without him trying to teach anything
Amazing studio, dull/bland/unoriginal music
John Siket hehe well done you did an opposite
Great video thx!!!
Jesus, moneybags over here... 💰💰💰
(Edit: I assure everyone my comment was meant in jest and came from a place of pure and seething jealousy.)
seriously - even though he is successful he must be in debt, no?
never even heard of this lad and he has some of the finest gear in Dublin
@@chrisb4907 Or be wealthy from other means (good job, family, financial investments,...), since music today doesn't make big money, especially in a "niche" genre, although it seems kind of a taboo. This channel is all about this: watching wealthy guys having fun with their expensive toys most of us will probably never be able to afford. If you're ok with it, then enjoy those nice videos.
@@cockur he got hand picked by Richie hawtin back in 2011 to go out to ibiza for his Enter club series
@@barlonmrando4921 Right. Had a listen to a few of his tunes on spotify. They were ok I suppose.
He has a dream studio of many. Just the best of the best. Very nice for him, that he‘s able to work in such a space. He worked hard for sure to get that that he‘s able to buy all that gear. But on the other hand i feel somehow he really wants to show off here his gear way more than „how“ he makes music. And honestly for me his attitude comes in a bit arrogant. I‘m not sure why. I think he fully deserves every piece of gear but in the way he talks about it gives me thst feeling perhaps…Let me know if you understand what i try to say…
I tell you the best thing is the balcony
track id at 5:50? i need it so bad
please help
The gear I'm looking for! Anyone got the ID for the opening track tho?
All the music is Matador's unrealeased ambient album
@@daithielle no news of release?
@@bornsleepy4541 Sooooon ;)
looking for that opening track too
is it matadors? i dont think it sounds like him
Someone please come back to this post when that unreleased album drop and let us know
Every dog lover is a winner
the tools are great but the music played in the clip is honestly pretty standard?and when he rants on about "listening" and "music".
can someone credit the music used in the video? Couldn't find them in the description...
Mostly unreleased tracks by Matador
@@ElectronicBeatsTV damn i should sneak into your database sometime
that's a CS80 in the back guys ;)
Yeahhhh I am gonna have to stick with my Behringers!
Content to stick with my Behringers as well. All of my Behringer gear is fantastic. I’ll put it up against the originals or more pricey stuff anyday. For me, it’s more about your creativity and knowing your gear well.
Nice GAS-positive messaging here. Haha just kidding sort of.. The bit he said about this being his palette is key. The gear is there because he has a use for it and it's inspiring for him. That's what's important.
👍🏻
Anyone know what sequencer is right below his monitor (next to the 303)?
Polyend Seq
@@BXLrules been 7 months but thanks!
