- In this episode, we turn conventional beginner knife making theory on its head. Don't buy junky equipment and don't limit yourself to a "simple" design. Be patient and bring your dream knife to life. The creative design process is the best part! Enjoy!
The knives in this video are sold.

Lol gotta have fun! Good luck!
Nice work. I'm hoping to be able to use these tips soon on my own knives.
Good! Reach out if you have question.
@@we_build_it Thank you, I will. Knives look great too.
DIY as I'm a hobbyists BlackSmith and enjoy the journey of several skills.
Age 71 and built my 2X72 grinder myself and not the strongest with the minimum 1 hp motor but still a great tool.Made a bevel tool and a knife holder for sanding and safety. Yes I'm having fun retirement.
I'm just enjoying the first batch of 9 knives and my Christmas gifts are better than fruit cakes and the Chinese knives that they flood our market with.
Thanks for helping me and others.
Agreed, and anytime!
What order do you suggest getting machines for your shop when space is a premium? I've got a garage, but no shed (in city limits of Leander), so I'm parking my car in half the garage, and don't have a TON of space for large machines and workbenches? I've got a drill press, an angle grinder, and a 8" bench grinder, but not sure how to fit a forge, anvil, 2x72, and whatnot in the space.
Great question. So if you watch my earlier videos you will see that it is in a 1 car garage. I have the luxury (talked with my wife) my garage is only for work. That being said in your case the walls are your friend and cheap wheel carts (the tool drawers that roll) put the forge on one so you can move it out of the way and outside when you forge. I used cabinets, and pallets that I found or were given as my first workbenches then as I saved from what I sold I upgraded.
This is a lot bigger conversation than can be had here. If you want shoot me an email with a picture of your space and I’ll see if I can make some suggestions (dimensions would help to) brackinbladesforge@gmail.com. We can talk more there. Are you in Leander Tx? My wife is from there.

😎💪👍
I started with a railroad spike and was fine but got bored since the ease of it all was boring. For my second knife I went with a twisted Damascus which I have also never made before lol. I may be dumb but I figured go big and learn from my mistakes early. Since then I only make Damascus knives and man O man do I hate my decision some times lmao. No matter what you do just try your best to have fun and take your time. So far I have made 5 knives and all but one have made it to the trash haha. Maybe I should go a bit more basic but ya.... I R Dumm!
Honestly, the Damascus process sucks I did the same with my first 6 Damascus knives. However you gotta get through it at some point. If you have time and materials I say there’s nothing wrong with it.
But I am a huge pusher of start with the basics get those down, cause then your mistakes are still better than your first knives.
Good job for ho after the tough stuff , and I hope you keep it up!
Did you temper the blades after you quenched?
Yes. I can not share the heat treat with the steel. However as your quenching and heat treating you can go to alpha knife supply and they have tempering and quenching instructions on most of their steels.
Great video, guys! My biggest takeaway... Logan is a wuss when it comes to spicy things. 🤣
I have the obm and I’m so confused on how you got your tilt table angled like that
We ground down the back a little bit
I will try to remember to talk about it in the next video.
Fun video! The hot peppers part was hilarious. 😂
Thanks! We had fun with it
Would you make a knife or two that I could buy?
send me an email and we can talk. We do take custom orders.

Have you Ever use super glue to glue your handles on I was told by a couple knife makers does it last longer and doesn’t give up overtime like epox he does
Yes, but use a quality one. It’s a staple material for our production knives. I use bsi ca glue. It seems to be the strongest.
I have Celiac Disease and can't eat Gluten, and my heat tolerance doesn't go beyond a Peperoncini (an mild Italian pepper) so I feel your pain.....um, both ways 🤢 Great video, and both great knives!
Yeah life is tough sometimes 😆 Thanks, man!

GVS SPR457 Elipse P100 Dust Half Mask Respirator with replaceable and reusable filters included, blue, m/l size a.co/d/hQZeFhV
This is what I use, but I change from time to time but I really like this one.
@@we_build_it thank you for replying and your help
Great video. Now I just need to get a 2x72 and stop using my 1x30 😂 I do have dreams of a REAL grinder
It is a game changer for sure. The first one was one I built cost me the steel, I got a motor on Amazon, and the wheel kit from origin blade maker. At the time it cost me all of about $350-$400. If you look up old hickory forge he has a great video on one.
Great video..but can't help but notice 3 belt grinders and not even one $99 Horrible freight porta bandsaw to cut out blade blanks, in a much safer, less noisy way then a cut off wheel on a hand grinder that makes hazardous dust particles, has fire risks, and long histories of exploding wheels with life changing consequences..one porta bandsaw and a set hand files would be better choice then one belt grinder and a hand grinder for a new hobbyist blade makers..Just an observation..Thanks..
We have a band saw, but the grinder is more efficient for steel. So far no discs have exploded… knock on wood.
