One of the single biggest mistakes I see KDP book publishers make when they create a book is using the wrong font. Let me show you the different characteristics of fonts and how to pick the right font and its attributes to create a stunning book that will sell well on Amazon.

Also consider layer styles. If you have a multi colored cover, a simple drop shadow can eliminate your contrast issues.

It is easy to check your presentation now with computer based images.
When I started as an illustrator on the board we had a reverse magnifying glass that you used to reduce your work in process.
You could then see blocks and shapes. You could see the clarity of the presentation or lack. You could see the movement of the images
Also turned the work upside down. Or used a mirror.
Then you were looking at how the shapes and colors and text related to each other. Not reading text or being lost in identifying the actual real world image.
Squinting even helps
Easy to do these adjustments on a computer.

I'm looking for a video that discusses how to embed the fonts on the title cover in free version of Canva before saving it as PDF. Let me know if there's a tutorial about this. It would be appreciated.
I've not done a tutorial on that.
I wrote a book in google docs. Times new roman and 12 point . Double spaced. Approx 250 words per page. Kdp printed it. Cover is amazing. But the text is far too small and doesn't reach the bottom of the page. Please help
It's dificult to advise on this as I don't create written books. I know that if you\ve created the file in Google docs it may have hidden formatting code in it that may affect its appearance from what it looks like at preview.
I'm always surprised at how poorly designed even the top sellers on Book Bolt are. Let alone the examples you pointed out. Maybe I'm a bit of a typography snob but the kerning on the WTF Is My Password book, Yikes!
Same in all areas of creativity. What sells the best is not necessarily the best technically. Many of the covers are surprisingly simple. I spend more time than I should trying to analyse what makes a cover sell well. 😆 It’s usually those books or videos that you produce quickly and don’t think will do well that actually do really well. Also, I think when you become good at something, and I see this with writing, you can then start to bend the rules and almost condense something down to its basics and create something brilliant. Apologies, going off on a bit of a tangent now!!
My current issues are the fonts that I used on the free version of Canva for the title. The error I'm getting is the not embedded fonts in the PDF when I uploaded to KDP Publishing.
I used to solve the problem by saving the cover as a .png file and then creating another blank cover file and importing the .png into that and then saving it as a pdf.

That is a size that is often used.

Thank you for your videos always so interesting. I sometimes put the title on the spine of the book and not on the front cover for agenda for example as i want people to enjoy the cover without anything written on it. Is that a mistake?

I’d love if you could help answer some questions such as - Say I have a publishing company and I am publishing a family or friend’s book for them under my publishing company. How do we decide who owns the copyright? I’d like for them to own their own copyright, but somehow I still need rights and permissions to publish their book. How exactly is this done in the US? Also, let’s say that I want to publish my friend’s book for them and they accidentally have a picture in it that was used without permission, or violated some terms on a website which they didn’t mean to do. Where can I find a general type of publishing contract that protects the publisher (me) from their oops? Thanks so much for your help!!!
I am based in the UK so not familiar with US law on these matters. I would suggest contacting a copyright or trademark attorney if you need to discuss contracts and such like.

My low content books (journals) stopped selling in August.
I noticed Amazon removed the categories from them.
In which categories should I publish them?
It depends what the books are.

That should be ok depending on the type of book. I wouldn’t do it for coloring, activity and homeschooling type books.

If we make our book using Word can we use the fonts that are supplied with it? Will we be allowed to use those fonts for commercial purposes? I must say I’d never even thought that it might not be allowed. Thank you for your videos

Hey Paul, how safe do you think is uploading the same coloring book twice with different covers? I want to see which kind of cover would get more sales!
It would be frowned upon by Amazon. The reason they have duplicate content penalties is that you will get some people who by both books, thinking they are different, receive them in the post only to find they are the same. Amazon gets complaints and have to issue a refund and you get negative reviews. I don’t they they like their platform being used for A/B testing.

Btw Paul, I'm living in Denmark, and I am a bit confused about the ad campaign and taxes we need to pay, because with taxes my ACOS don't make sense as the amount I pay for ads are higher than it shows on the campaign site (Do I even make sense?). I believe it's 25 % . How do you handle that? Do I just write it off once a year?
Not entirely sure what you mean. I take the royalties, subtract the ad spend and then pay taxes on whatever the overall profit is.

What software do you use to make your covers and interiors?
Mainly Adobe Illustrator.
