I had a herniated disc at L5 back in 2008 and had a microdisectomy surgical procedure. The same thing happened again in 2010, same procedure. As of about a month ago I am having the same pain again. It gets to the point where you feel like you are literally losing your mind. I am glad to hear that with time and exercise it can heal. I do not want to have a 3rd surgery.

Yes, Mr Madden is "correct" you can heal herniated disc. I myself had herniated disc to the point that ended up at Hospital unable to walk. I was told i needed surgery and i refused but did get an epidural steroid injection so i was able to walk. I then went in for physical therapy and with combination of stretches and exercise I was able to regain full movement and strength on by back. Its been 6 yrs, no surgeries and no back problems i continue doing the stretch exercises.

Can you please tell me the exercises, i been doing some and now my pain and weakness in the feet is gone but when i move my right foot i get a concetrated good type of pain in L4-L5, now i only feel a little bit of pain in that area, that i can tolerate, and a sensation when im standing for a long period of time 1-3 hours, will be nice to see how you herniated disc healed, thanks regardless.

Dgenie Mistiq my recent back ache reoccurred after 2013. It was due 1st from 2009 or 2010 during roofing. I tore a lower right muscle. took 7 months of chiropractic therapy and it got a lot better. 2011 to 2014. I injured my back from work. 3 times, it hurt much. 2 other times, I felt bones knocking at each other from the back, and fluid spray-like sensation. that day later, it hurt REAL bad. I had no medical insurance, so I ruffed it out. during mid 2014 and 2016, I reinjured the lower back area. I didn't anything strenuous. but both instances, the bones knocked at each other, half an hour or an hour later that area had a fluid like squirt sensation. and a day later, it hurt really bad.

Seth SE hey , never go for steroid but yes exercise can heal it I have been suffering from the same for last 1year but it got worst when I had steroid enjection so I would recommend to take physio therapy and exercise only and when you get rid of 50% then try to add one sport in daily routine like swimming

    Million thanks for this video.
It was my starting point in getting rid of sciatica pain caused by hernia in my L5/S1. My left leg was going numb, but I was too lazy to exercise and too poor to pay doctors for questionable help.
You know what I did? I started sleeping on a small pillow under my back. That helped me to keep my spine in your recommended position at night. After like 3 months I got used to pain in my back and got rid of pain in my leg completely. My posture has changed also.

Had I gone to RUclips all time ago, I would have spared myself from the poor quality of life. Thinking only exercise would help relieve the pain or that AWEFUL epidural. I was just told we can help relieve the pain. What a crock! Thank you so much for explanation it has helped me understand more deeply on a future for myself.

I fixed my sciatica - easily & for free: I had a bulging disc at L4 / L5 causing shooting pains down my leg. Semi-crippled. No amount of osteo, chiro or swimming helped. Then I STUMBLED ON A MAGIC SOLUTION: I rode my bike -> INSTANT RELIEF!
Being a road race type bicycle, it caused me to stretch out, so my spine gradually opened up day by day ... after a year, I reversed an entire adult life of back issues. TRY IT!

I am a bodybuilder who trains with weights 4-5 days a week.I was doing bent over rows and a sharp pain in the left side of my lower back has occured. This is about the 5th time when this is happening, usually once about 6 months. The previous injuries were from deadlift exercise, probably i was tilting my pelvis. But this time has been 3 weeks and i can't bend forward or tie my shoes. In the past i have done a lot of stability, activation to get past the injury and now i am doing the same.

I had the worst pain I've ever had because a herniated disc in my neck (C5 and C6). I was losing hope for life, and even being able to function in anyway. I was in so much pain that I would just cry all day, hoping for the night to come so I could knock myself out with enough Ambien. I am starting to feel better after over 3 weeks of this pain. I wanted to say what I did to help in the healing process, lots of prayer, prayer from people that I don't know. I also bought a neck traction that pulls your vertibrates apart. I used it for about 10 minutes two times now, and the pain has gone from a 10 to about a 4. I am in much better spirits because of it. My next suggestion would be to get a decompression table, or decompression machine to put you upside down with the help of someone so you can get things pulled apart so the disc can go back into place.

Thanks! I have a PT friend, and I haven't seen one in a long while, so it might behoove me to do so. I do play guitar a lot, but that was never much affected by the injury. I was a habitual stomach sleeper up until the injury, but now I sleep on my side (I toss and turn but typically sleep on my left side), and I use a contoured memory foam pillow. The radiculopathy was on my left side. My arms are typically underneath my pillow behind my head when sleeping.

The noticeable effect took about a week to after and then gradually more each week. My pain level was about 8 on 10 levels. After about 2 month 99% pain free! But get MRI first. Hi Chad, i couldn't agree more with you and thank you for educating us! I had terrible sciatica pain for about 2 months until my father showed me to do Mackenzie exercise to push the disc forward. Like you said my pain through centralisation was no longer in my buttocks anymore only just a little on the nerve around L5 S1 disc. I had my MRI done and the report says I don't have disc herniation but little disc protrusion. I'm still doing Mackenzie exercise everyday. Does that mean that doing Mackenzie regularly will eventually sooner or later push the disc back to its place? At least in my case where I have less than disc herniation or minor disc herniation which just happens to touch the nerve

In my case it took about 1 year to have just as many good days as bad days but after 2 years I was 90% healed and now I have almost no problems. At almost 57 years old, I'm still lifting things, riding motorcycles, etc.

I've been doing the McKenzie exercise (mostly the one flat on the floor and then pushing up with hands) for about 4 months now and I haven't had a major episode of pain yet but I notice I still have pain in my lower back when I'm doing the exercise and if I bend forward right after doing the exercise I feel a pop in my lower back. What should I do? Keep doing exercises? Flexion?

I just came back from the ER today, the pain was excruciating and the naproxen didn't do anything so the result is a herniated disc. I've had my condition worsen in the past week (weakness started to settle in and I can lift my foot) so I'm on percoset and prednisone but with a prescription for PT. The only thing that makes me sad is the "no sports or training" until it's healed.

Physical therapy it is. I hope she will be fine. She is not on medical assistance, two weeks ago she was only given 10 generic Percocet 5/325 together with motrin, it gave little relief, she wasnt prescribed anything further than that except an appointment more than a month away. Should we worry that she will lose permanent feeling anywhere on the right arm/hand?
Thanks so much for your advice.

I've tried it all. From physiotherapy to acupuncture to steroid epidural (which made things worst)to strong pain killers to stretches and to wet cupping. None of them seem to work. All that's left is IDD therapy and surgery. I'm so frightened of surgery as I've heard frightening stories. I'm so sad :'(

I leaned back with a heavy rain soaked plank above my head and felt it go between L4 and L5. My specialist says no back extensions. My back hurts and it runs through from my buttocks down to my calf. Am at the end of my tether. Approaching my old age I was looking forward to a fit old age and now at 69 feel crippled and in constant pain. Physio was like a plaster on the pain and now going through chiropractic jumbo mumbo. They out a T shaped bar end on my disk and shoot it. really weird but after 12 my neck feels wonderful but my back and leg the same

I would like to share a testimony with you guys. On dec 24th 2018, God finally replied to my perseverant prayers. I had been suffering with back pain after weightlifting improperly and going high reps and high weight. I squatted 180 pounds and would do 7 sets of ten reps and then continue on. My point here is that my back was extremely damaged from all this load and improper technique. I had not gone to the gym in 6 months because of the pain and I was scared to even touch a barbell again. Part of being Gods daughter I realized that God knew how much I love weightlifting and he also knew the pain I was going through physically and so I made it my mission to ask him everyday to heal my back and to be perseverant in my prayers. I recall my inspiration to persevere in prayer come from going to the holly sacrament at 3 am while I was reading my bible about the parable of the persistent widow Luke 18 1-8 :
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
Upon reading this I was convinced that God will answer my prayers and 2 months of consistent asking he healed me.
I was in my room praying the 15 prayers of Saint Birgitta and I would always pause on the 6th one where it said in summary “ remember the sword of sorrows that trespassed your holly and immaculate mother and have compassion on all my spiritual and corporal afflictions” and I would always say “God remember my back please heal me I know that hurting it was my doing but if you want to heal me you can”.
Then on dec 24th before doing the 15 prayers of Saint Birgitta again I read one of the 15 promises “ Anything that you ask to me and my mother I will grant it if it is my will” so I took this very seriously and when the 6 th prayer came up again I paused and made my daily prayer “God please heal my back” and then I kneeled on my bed and prayed “Momma Mary please ask this of God too because it says that anything that I ask to you and God will come true if it is his will” and then I felt the holly spirit of God and it came down to me and there was just so much peace. My back curled up and my hands were involuntarily slowly bowing down until I did reach a bow position. Then I felt this breeze like touching my spine and it was so gentle. I immediately broke down in these uncontrollable tears and my body was in trembles. I knew what was happening, my God was healing me. Then before raising my self up I heard a strong voice in my head say “your faith has healed you”. This happened pretty recently and I am beyond thankful to God. My back pain is gone!!! 6 months of pain gone by the grace of God and intercession of My Momma Mary.
I am writing this not to brag about what God did with me but to give any of you guys hope about what God can still do to you. There is nothing impossible for God, he HEARS US!! He awaits patiently with love and kindness and will answer our prayers if it is his will. After having this experience I feel very blessed I hope you can ask God with trust on anything that you need because just like he healed me he will heal you!
Here’s my favorite bible verse; one that I stumbled after this happened:
    1 John 5:14-15
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.
ASK and IT Shall BE GIVEN!!!!
Also I would like to mention 2 things
#1) Don’t be afraid to ask Mary to intercede for you before Christ, she is our Mother and will only bring us closer to her son not farther apart. She already interceded for us in the wedding of Cana when they had run out of wine and she told Jesus “they are out of wine” and then Jesus replied “it is not yet my time” but then Mary said to them “Do what he asks of you” and the. Jesus asked them to bring water to him which he then turned into wine. This is the first miracle that God performed in the Bible through the intercession of Mary. Jesus also makes her our mother at the cross when he tells John , son there you have your mother” and mother there you have your son”. John was the son of Salome not Mary so when God says this he is giving humanity a new eve, a new celestial mother: Mama Mary!!!
So don’t be afraid to reach out to Mary because she reaches out to her son and gets us closer to him
    2) The 15 Prayers if Saint Birgitta, they are for a year and I am currently in month six. It is a long commitment but not impossible, as a college student there are times where I am drained to finish them but I always ask God to help me finish them. These prayers were given to Birgitta by God and they are found today in the basilica of Saint Peter extramuros in Rome. God promises 21 things and amongst them is ensuring that he will come with his mother to us at the hour of our death and will protect us. He also promises 100 days of indulgence from purgatory for every time that they are recited. I strongly encourage anyone to do these prayers.
    Here’s the link :
    In Spanish
    oracionesydevocionescatolicas.com/quince_oraciones_brigida.htm
    In English:
    mostsacredheart.com/prayers/st-bridget.html
Pray on, be consistent, trust in God , ask for Mary’s intercession and embrace her as your mother And you will have the shortest and easiest road to God and getting your prayers answered!!!!!!!

It hurts whatever I do, sitting, standing, bending forward to touch my toes hurts. Bending back hurts, but less than bending forward. If i stand straight and lift my leg up at a 90 degree angle, that really hurts. Sometmes if I sit for more than a few minutes, my right lower back/hip will spasm and make my right leg shake/spasm for a second. Thank you so much for any advice

Would the "grade 5 lumbo pelvic mobilization" technique, traction, or an inversion table be worth a shot prior to subjecting myself "to the knife". I"d prefer a holistic approach, if at all possible, than any type of invasive surgery. Also, I do not experience any signs of cauda equina syndrome.

I've got a severe back pain because of herniated disc L5-S1 after the trauma at a gym a month ago. I had even the special injections, but it still hurts especially below the left knee and some toes remain numb. After seen many videos on RUclips I found out I ALWAYS had this problem, but I didn't know it. I was lifting weights, doing squats, deadlifts and I never know that I had a herniated disc!!! Now I've came back to those exercises which I was doing instinctively when I knew nothing about this problem. McKenzie exercises and exercises demonstrated by Dr Mandell. Many people do these exercises just because they fill a lot of relief for their back and leg pain! They do that unconsciously . I did it for many years and I never knew about the problem which I still have. Just one coincidence at the gym, a serious mistake doing leg press let me realise that I have a herniated disc!!! My experience explains, why so many people never know that they have this problem with their spine.

Are those bending backwards exercises good for neck bulging disc too?
Can a bulging disc heal completly?
And if I do the banding backwards exercises will I be able to do my jumping exercises again?

When I bend backwards there seems to be more pain shooting down my left leg and butt. When bending forward with legs straight I have pain shooting down my left leg as well, but if I bend forward with legs not being straight than I have no pain down the leg. I'm also only 25 years old. The leg pain started after heavy lifting at work. You don't think this is disk herniation symptoms? Think it could be something worse like those three that you listed above?

Just FYI I was given pain killers for 2 days and advised to take vitamin d and omega 3 capsules for 3 months till the exact problem was determined. I was instructed to avoid bending and lifting while performing certain advised exercises. The exercises certainly haven't changed anything unfortunately. Is it a disc issue? Nerve problem? I have no clue but i'm trying to avoid an MRI scan.

Doctor Madden. Hello sir. I just saw my MRI results yesterday and they revealed a L5S1 Herniation (poking towards nerves in the spine via axial view) and a L4 bulging disc. He opted for ESI (epidural steroid injection) then if that doesnt work trying one of the various methods of discectomys to remove the offending portions. I have great pain on account of this (sciatica) and local pain to the site.
I want to expend all my options prior to surgery. Any insight on my particular case?

I'm having lower back pain & sciatica on my right leg started the Mid of Jan. A month ago, MRI findings of L5/ S1 disc herniation. After several times Chinese osteopathic treatment, my lower back stiffness improves. But I'm getting more pain from the pelvic region, it affects my daily life. I can't neither walk nor sleep well. Is it normal? The pain of pelvic region is a minor form of sciatica? Also what is the meaning of "PID" from the MRI report? Thank you so much for your time.

Is the injection likely an epidural or perispinal etanercept? Which is a better alternative?

I've read a lot on forums and what not, where other people list different sorts of pain that they go through with herniated/ruptured disc, but I've yet to find anything similar to my worst case senarios. So far this has happened to me 4 times over the course of about 6 years...when my lower back "goes out", I get knocked to the ground, and it feels like what I'd imagine being shot, or struck by lightning would feel like (pain wise). My lower back begins to send these terrible shocks throughout my body. I have a high pain tolerance, but during these moments, I can't help but scream and cry. I can't fully describe just how horrible it is, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that I really do believe it would be up there with some of the most painful experiences. Once I'm down, I can not get up. It's not a pain you can push through, and when I attempt to make even the slightest move, it's just BOOM BOOM BOOM, shock after shock. Each time that this has happened, I have to get taken in an ambulance to the ER. They give me everything under the sun, and once I get home, I have to be lifted out of the bed for days, then it very slowly gets to where I can start lifting up on my own. My question is, do you have any idea what's happening in my body when I'm having such intense spasms? I deal with typical sciatica symptoms regularly, so I'm aware of the disc pushing into the nerve, etc. But what is happening during the time that I'm experiencing the electrical shock type pain that at one time, paralyzed my legs while my lower back was going nuts with spasms?

    • @velvetskies3214
      @velvetskies3214 9 лет назад

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. Makes me not want to live anymore. Have you had a steroid epidural? I did and pain got a lot worst. I was told by somebody to look up arachnoiditis. So I did. Now I just await my appointment with a surgeon to find out exactly why I'm feeling this much pain/stiffness/shocks/spasms.

    • @Thebombboom

beetlejes it's my non-medical opinion that your rupturing your disc with each time you have an episode. something I read about discs is the material inside causes almost instantaneous reaction with the nervous system. this is due to the material being treated as a foreign body, thus being attacked viciously by your immune system. one byproduct of this is inflammation, and the inflamed portion would be the nerve. so, the material itself touching the nerve, followed by the inflammation leads to the pain your indicating. it gradually goes away, either slow or fast depending on location of material, amount of inflammation, so on. the annulus of the disc slowly heals. then another month or two, the stressed annulus cracks when you move wrong, twist wrong, or put weight on it just so, and voila, pain is back. that's my closest guess.

This is to benefit others, not me.
Do you suggest that bulging disc IS NOT the cause of sciatica?!
Opening up the spine through gentle exercises in stretched-out positions - it makes perfect sense. Flexion on sports cycles is shallow. In fact, it's upright cycling that can cause problems.
My back issue has a 30 year history - I'm very confident in my analysis.

Only complicating factor is overweight (about 60-65 lb.). We also have an inversion table (goes back to about 50 degrees) that he's using at home when he doesn't go to PT. Should that help?

Im herniated L4/L5 just like in your video, its shooting out more left side... I have no leg pain and no shooting pains it's completely isolated in the back. It is causing stenosis and im showing early signs of arthritis... im 29 years old.... Original injury was roughly 9 months ago, about 2 months ago it got to the point where I could bearly walk and had my MRI... 2 weeks ago was my appt with the neurosurgeon. I went to Vidant in Greenville NC... he didn't recommend any types of surgey because I wasnt having shooting pains, he said it appeared to be healing itself already and he recommended core training, yoga and stretching... i go back in 3 months for a follow up. I will says pain meds didnt help but celebrex took all the inflammation out which helped me to be able to slowly train again

Does a herniated disc ALWAYS give leg pain as well? I feel like this sounds most like what I have but I don't experience leg pain.

My L4 is herniated on only the left side and it feels AWESOME if I bend at the waist and lean the opposite direction at the same time. Plus, I thought most herniations at L4 cause pain down the front of the leg to the knee, and not necessarily sciatica?
