  • Bulging discs are one of the most common conditions that will derail your workouts quickly. In this video, I’m going to show you how to fix a bulging disc in your lower back without requiring surgery. In just 3 simple steps you are going to be able to get rid of the pain that is wreaking havoc on your training and making your life miserable.

The first thing that needs to be discussed however are the terms used to describe the condition. Some people refer to a bulging disc as a herniated disc. In both cases, we are talking about a scenario where the inner disc material has protruded from the disc but has not reached a point of no return. The point at which the disc can no longer be repaired without surgery is more accurately called a ruptured disc.
Bulging discs are a very common problem and one that we all might have to some degree if we were to MRI our backs. The thing is however, just because we may have a disc that is bulging does not mean that we will have symptoms. The only time it starts to matter is when the presence of the disc starts to become symptomatic and interferes with your life or workouts.
The good news about disc issues however is that 98 percent of them are non-operative and solved with a dedication to just a few simple steps. One of those steps however is not stretching the lower back. This may come as a surprise to you, especially if you feel that your low back has become tight or sore as a result of your disc issues.
Far too many people are told to lay on their back and start pulling their knee or knees up to their chest to stretch out the tight muscles in the low back. They may even be told to get on their knees and sit back on their heels to stretch out all of the muscles of the back. Both of these would be horrible advice because they not only aren’t treating the cause of the problem but they are aggravating the actual cause and making the disc protrude even more.
What you need to do is focus on fixing the disc and recentralizing it through extension. If you can do this, the spasm that you are experiencing in the low back muscles as a result of the herniation will resolve once the disc itself is fixed. There are 3 parts to fixing this issue however and it starts with a decompression of the spine to allow for more room for the nerves that are being compressed by the disc protrusion.
This can easily be done by hanging from a pullup bar with your toes slightly in contact with the ground. Let the pelvis drop and feel the spine open up. Do this for about 30 seconds to a minute and then proceed to step two if you need it or just skip to step three if not. Step two is a list correction. This is needed if you find that you are leaning to one side because of the pain of the protrusion.
This can easily be done against a wall and will help to put the spine back in the proper alignment prior to moving on to the final step. Lay on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders. Press down on the floor and lift your upper torso off of it. Be sure to keep your hips in contact with the ground to avoid overextension of the lumber spine. Do this a few times a day and always within a zone of comfort.
Before you know it, your disc will be centralized and your pain and symptoms down the leg and in the lower back should subside. You will be ready to start attacking your workouts again in no time. If you are looking for a workout program that puts the science back in strength and helps to injury proof your body from letting this happen again, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System.

I had a herniated disc in 2017. The pain lasted for more than 3 months and I was off work for this length of time. I then watched someone (can’t remember who) and they explained the same process. I can vouch for the decompression using the bar method. I did 30s x 3 reps 5 times a day for 3 weeks. The pain went away. It did come back after 3 years but this time it was one week’s worth of pain and decompression. I had been to a chiropractor and osteopath but it only gave me temporary relief. I had spent hundreds of pounds but the solution was the bar. I promise you ❤. The bar is permanently in my kitchen now 😊.

Have been lifting since 3 years and never decompressed my spine. Few months ago I felt discomfort in lower back and eventually consulted with a doctor. The doctor assessed bulged disc from MRI and referred me to a physiotherapist for 1 month physiotherapy.Furthermore, he suggested I should not lift anymore until full recovery. Those therapy days were very depressing assuming I can’t lift anymore untill I found you on youtube. After two weeks of useless therapy I decided not to those costly sessions anymore and started doing these three exercises at home and realised how effective is spine decompression. No less than a week my back pain was just vanished. Now, i’m back to the gym, thriving with pain free lifting and incorporated spine decompression for 2-3 minutes every day after weightlifting.

I've read a lot of comments that talk about how great this video is. I came here because yesterday, it was like something shifted in my back and I couldn't even walk on my leg anymore. I spent 12 hrs in the hospital last night and the MRI shows I have a very bad bulging disc pushing on the nerve and that's why my leg is numb and throbbing. Unbelievable, constant, throbbing pain in my hip all the way down to my toes.
I'm starting these exercises today. Wish me luck. I'll check back in with my progress and results. Thank you guys for this video!

Hey! Yes the exercises absolutely worked! However, the one where you lean against the wall, not everyone needs. That's IF you need to centralize the disc. I didn't need to. I did the other exercises, and have feeling in my leg again and feel so much better. Still have to take care of it though, such as fixing your posture, make sure you're not sitting too much, take walks etc. These exercises are incredible but just make sure you're looking after your back, and doing things to KEEP it in good shape so that you don't get back to being in bad shape again, after you've gotten the disc back where it belongs.

She never had back problems and she was scared, thinking that she might need MRIs, surgery, etc. THIS video calmed her fears and cured her. Took about a month of doing these 3 or 4 times a day and she's 100% now, but she still does "The 3", as she calls them. She's sending this vid to everyone she knows. I've recovered from 3 herniated disc, periformas syndrome, and a hip slip.
    Solution:
    - Ice pack only no heat, helps reduce inflammation.
‐ Inversion table, decompresses the spine to allow disc to heal. Go easy, you don't need to be upside down to improve.
    - Dr./ Chiropractor, alignment and stretching only. Make sure they are good.
    - Magnesium, Fish Oil, Zinc for pain it works.
    - As you get better exercise to strengthen those areas.
I pray you get better soon. This is what I did. No meds, no surgery.

Well I have to give credit where credit is due. I am 68 retired guy. Have had L4 and L5 herniated nearly 40 years. My choices back then was a fusion which is a major operation, physical therapy and the good old meds. Well I chose the last 2. My L4 and L5 have give me held from time to time over the years when I injure my self doing something stupid. I exercise 15 to 20 minutes every day. I also eat right, lots of veggies 3 to 4 times a day. Cutting the story short I’m healthier the a horse. But when L4 and L5 arrive for a visit? it’s not shorter then living hell in pain. Every time doing my recuperation apparently I was doing ALL THE WRONG THINGS for two to three weeks of recuperation. I came across this video because L4 and L5 paid me a visit last Friday. Since then I’ve been hurting really really bad and apparently doing ALL THE WRONG THINGS as well. Well? as you can imagine I am willing to do anything to relieve some of this horrible pain, discomfort, walking crooked and spasms with excruciating pain in my lower back and bellow my hips and legs. I watched this video today and decided to give it a shot.
After doing exactly as described these three steps for a few minutes I not only started filing better but some of the pain started to reside and come down within a few minutes. The pressure was the main one. This man has changed my life and made my recuperation much easier and faster. I am truly thankful that people like this exist in the world to share their knowledge and experiences. Thank you so much. JR from Texas

I couldn't breathe without excruciating pain. I got out of bed to try what he demonstrated against the wall and my back has begun lining up after just one hour. I went to deep on a leg press and the next day tried to stretch using the knees to the chest and couldn't get off the ground due to the disk popping out. I was 25 years old. Now 30 years later I have a constant weakness that requires routine manipulation to keep the disk in position. So please think about what you are doing or a lifetime of pain will come your way. These exercises are what I use but believe me the weakness is still there and the pathway for the disk to pop back is much easier following an injury. Also if you have pain to one side you can angle your hips away from the pain side during those back extensions. Plus after you have carried out these exercises hanging from a pull up bar with you feet touching the floor and total relaxing you spine muscles can also really help.

Because I am fit, flexible, exercise and been weight lifting for 3 years, none of the doctors believed there could be anything wrong with me n refused me the MRI scan. Until I stupidly lifted my butt on a leg press and did my lower back in. L5 and S1 are the worst and I developed a sciatica about a month ago, I think 4 weeks after the injury at the gym. These exercises are helping and I am doing lower back strengthtening exercises on top of it by Jeff but the pain still hovers around my ankle and piriformis muscle. I started icing it again as it feels inflamed. Hot water bottle and bath just made it worse in a longer term. I was getting numbness in the foot, and even though it's not as bad feeling as the pain, it apparently means it's getting worse. So I am now back to pain after icing it and cannot wait to reach the day with no pain again. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

@@katk8386 oh my god, that's terrible that you had to wait that long! listen I'm not in any way qualified to give you any advice on this, but if the pain as you say travels all the way to your ankle, that probably means your disc does press on a nerve. Again, I'd highly suggest you go to physical therapy if you can because these exercises in this video are general and limited, you need to do exercises specifically for your injury, and to answer your question, I do my exercises at least once a day (30 reps for each) some days if I can manage I'll do them twice (unlike you I am not fit at all, which is apparently why I have the pain in the first place because my back muscles are weak, but I found that the more I do the exercises the easier they get and then my doctor recommends another type of back strengthening exercises). You seem to have it worse than me, I genuinely hope you get better soon ♡♡

Jeff, I can't begin to thank you enough for this.
My back would periodically "act up," and then calm back down. Earlier this year, though, it started acting up and just never went away. I thought that was it; I'm going to finally have to go under the knife. I had stopped working out and was avoiding other things, hoping to keep from exacerbating my pain.
I've been watching your videos for some time and it occurred to me to see if you had any workouts I could do in spite of my bulged disc. That search turned up this video.
I tried it the next day and the results were - and I don't use this word loosely - INSTANT. By the time I walked out of the gym my pain was significantly lessened. Within two days it was unnoticeable. For nearly two months now I have the (very) occasional twinge, and aside from that, the pain is GONE.
To you this is perhaps something more simple, but to me it was nothing short of a miracle. I feel like have my life back.
There are other things I wish I could ask you about, and I mean that as a compliment because after this I'm sold on your knowledge and appreciate you sharing it.

This actually helped! after 3-4 days I noticed a difference, and after just 7-8 days its now the first morning Ive actually woken up with no pain what so ever!
The pain started in my low back and went down my right leg for some reason. at its worst, I used to limp while walking and also waking up several times a night because of the pain. All gone now.
On average I did this 2 times a day:
    1. hanging for 1 min
    2. recentralizing 12 reps
    3. extension with 20 sec hold(then pausing for 5 deep breaths or 30 sec), for 4-5 reps.

I GOT TROWN UNDER THE TRAIN, and dragged by a hook beneath the train by my pants for 800 metres. @@skylark_yt Ive had lowbk problems for years. Since I was 19.
Got into a car accident in may of 2020 and it really things up. I’ve been doing chiropractic and massage and it has helped a lot. Along with exercising. But I took a break from chiropractic because life got chaotic for a couple months and while doing a project in my garage where I was bent over most of the time it did some damage of some sort.
This has been the longest flare up I’ve ever had. 😓 like I said , pain subsided but my back muscle will hardly stop seizing up!
Anyway, had X-rays today and it looks so bad. He said I have a quarter of the disc left. But not bone on bone he didn’t say herniation. And I know if it were I’d probably still be in a lot of pain. Well at least I think.
And don’t get me wrong if I move a certain way then yes it will be very painful. I’m just unclear on what is going on. I blame myself for zoning out as he spoke. Because all I could think of was not being able exercise and go on hikes and continue to do my job. But hey I always think the worst.
I’ll call him tomorrow. As for the exercises, I’d like to try them. And I do know it’s at my own discretion.

My L4 and L5 are bulging due to the most embarrassing combat related injury. In 2012, I was in Afghanistan. Previous week I had ran two races after tucking out with just 35 lbs for about 14 miles…and then the injury happened during the infamous Frontenac battle. I was manning the radio and the phone rang and I jumped out of my seat to answer and something in my back popped. I was almost stuck; kinked and in tremendous pain barely able to move a few hours later. So embarrassingly not glorious. Anyways man, enjoy my funny combat story and know that I appreciate your channel tremendously…I’m working on abs and now on my back which has hurt ever since.

These exercises are great, thank you. I don’t think this addresses the underlying issue or cause of the problem in the first place though, which I think is a lack of mobility in the hip region, specifically from sitting down so much. And also a sedentary lifestyle (outside of lifting weights). I’ve had this issue on and off for years, to the point where it flared up so badly that I was no longer able to move at all for a few days. Since then I’ve really focused on getting a lot more steps in - minimum of 10,000 a day, strengthening my core and working on hip mobility (which was terrible from all the sitting down). And, when I’m working at my desk, making sure to stand up and walk around, as well as doing the last exercise in this video - every 45 minutes. It’s hugely improved things, just need to keep it up…
I also think another mistake is to jump straight back into lifting weights when you feel no pain, should take at least 6-8 weeks off lifting and address these underlying issues first.
I think a lot of people tend to sit in a chair all day doing an office job, and then they jump right into doing weights right after… which is a recipe for disaster
