  • The American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) is one of 5 members of the family cinclidae. Together the dippers are the world's only aquatics songbirds. They live in swift streams and are well adapted to feed and stay warm in their environments. Their amazing feeding tactics put them on my top 5 list of favourite birds.

    Your enthusiasm is extremely endearing. I saw this bird today while hiking and it blew my mind how it was swimming in the water and doing what it does. Thanks for teaching me about the AMAZING dipper!

    I have one that lives in my garden. I live in NM and she has no stream nearby. I have 5 young chickens she seems to have taken on as hers. She watches over them all day. I’ve lived in NM most of my life, and I’ve never seen one before. She’s lovely.

    Hello Carley and thank you very much for the shout out to my channel. New-Brunswick is very popular for Canadian tourists and that's what i try to show to encourage you westerners to come visit us. i took a long break of my RUclips collaboration with friends but will start back this winter. it's almost here .
    That bird is awesome, i don't think we have that here in the east coast. i'm part of a NB birding group and never heard of that one.
    you still make awesome videos , keep it up girl !

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад

      They only live in the west. I somehow left their range out of the 33 facts. Too bad. You'll have to come to BC to BC to see it :D I went to NB when I was too young to fully appreciate it. I also had a job interview for a research position over their studying flying squirrels, but didn't get it. I'll go back sometime in my adult life.

    Enjoyed that Carley...yes Ouzel sounds about right. I would have had them closer to Wren mind but I suspect the research was accurate. Kiads of facts in there. All the best. Mark

      I was actually out there trying to shoot salmon when I came across the dipper. I guess the salmon wanted the attention back.

    Some great captures there, pretty sure I saw a Lesser Spotted Canadian in the scene with the Dipper jumping into the water ;)
    I pronounce it Oozle, but that could just be my dialect version

      Haha. I didn't even notice that Lesser Spotted Canadian until the final edit. Looks like she might be trying to herd the dipper towards the camera.

    Ah, we don't have them here. only very occasionally and then a thousand ornithologist come out.. amazing footage, look at it go!
    The dipping looks a bit like the head bobbing the king fisher does...

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад

      I feel like a community where ornithologists are converging to spot a dipper would be a great setting for a movie.

      my dad made a picture once.. ..maybe i can find it: a tiny dipper in a pond and all them cameras an tripods and expensive outdoor clothes completely smothering it .. .. poor thing.

    @TheOtterOutdoorsman 6 лет назад

    Awesome video Carley! Seriously that is a cool bird and now I'm sad it's not on the East coast. But great shots and cool facts! How common are they for you to find? They move just like the northern flicker.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад +1

      Fairly common. If I'm taking a walk up a creek, I will usually see one, but since humans and dippers don't really share a habitat, they aren't spotted too often.

    • @TheOtterOutdoorsman
      @TheOtterOutdoorsman 6 лет назад

      are you suggesting humans aren't aquatic? (ok that joke didn't really land in text, it needs a British accent to work). That's pretty cool. I'm actually going to try and catch on a camera a bird that's decently common around here and during certain times of the year I can call to me.

  • @CrazyCrits
    @CrazyCrits 6 лет назад

    Your right, That is a cool bird lol. Did you take all this footage yourself? Some good shots there, How did the bird respond to you filming it, Was it just chill or was there some fear of you filming it or getting close at any point?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 лет назад +1

      The one in the darker setting didn't seem to care, but I also had a decent zoom. The one in the sunny creek did care. I came out specifically to film it. I was trying hard to get underwater footage, so I was around for a while. Unfortunately, my camera with the good zoom ended up in a river last year, so I had to get closer for the shot.

      The Last Grownup in the Woods dang, so sorry to hear you lost your can last year, I went into a River with my brand new $500 go pro with out the waterproof trap door on so I can relate. Nice to hear how those birds behave cause I always try to pick up a little something anytime I see something new.

    This was awesome! I see these little guys diving into the rapids all the time and have always thought they were amazing, but I didn't know most of what you covered in this video and appreciate them even more now. Great job on both the footage and narration. I'm going to have to check out that animals playlist you linked to and see what else I can learn. 🙂

      If you're interested in learning your bird songs, there are a few apps out there. I use iBird. I think the price has gone up quite a bit, so you can probably get a good one for cheaper.

      Cool! I think I would only recognize a handful of calls at this point so that sounds like a great way to learn.
