Found in many backyards of the Eastern United States of America, they are favored by many and it’s easy to see why, with their sassy way and a look that exudes cuteness. In this video learn about the Carolina Wren's Appearance, Distribution, Habitat, Diet, Songs and Calls, Behavior, Breeding, Population, and many other cool facts about them.
Measuring 4.5 to 5.5 inches and weighing up to 0.8 ounces. They are small yet chubby, with a slender down-curved bill that gives these rascals an adorable grumpy bird look. Both male and female, beams with a rich reddish-brown above, slightly orange below, and white eyebrow stripe, chin, and throat.
Mostly found in the southeast United States, these birds have expanded their range over the years now living further north into southern Canada. Carolina Wrens are permanent residents, they do not head south in winter. Find the Carolina Wren in places such as bottomland woods, shrubby wooded residential areas, brushy thickets including those in suburban yards, overgrown farmlands, and also old neglected buildings and other human-made structures, closer to the ground and in the leaf litter or tangled vegetation.
Attract them by using feeders like, platforms, large tube feeders, small or large hoppers, and even the ground, with the food they enjoy such as Suet, Peanut hearts, hulled sunflower seeds, and mealworms.
The Carolina Wren's favorite food are spiders, cockroaches, beetles, grasshoppers, moths, and caterpillars, among others. There are times when they will even eat small lizards, frogs, and snakes, A small portion of their diet, includes plant matter, things such as fruit pulp, and seeds from bayberry, sweetgum, or poison ivy.
These little passerines are known to produce many different calls and sounds, they are most commonly known for their Tea kettle song that is sung by only the male.
In Spring, as with many other birds, the pair gets busy with nesting, choosing open cavities that are around 3 - 6 feet off of the ground, in trees, overhangs, and stumps. They are known to make many different nests before settling on one. One thing about these guys is that in residential areas they are known to make use of all kinds of human-made things to build a nest in, such as mailboxes, the cover to a propane tank, flowerpots, they will even nest in old coat pockets and boots. They will also use natural things like abandoned hornet nests, or old nests from other birds. Since they aren’t picky, it is easy to have a pair use a nestbox.
Since they are making their way into Canada in recent decades, the Carolina Wren is a U.S - Canada Stewardship species. Partners in-flight estimates a breeding population of 14 million, On the continental concern score it rates a 7 out of 20 and is not on the 2016 state of North America’s Birds watch list indicating that they are doing fairly well.

Such a wonderful video! This was the bird that “chewed me out”, when I was trying to right a (seemingly) decorative birdhouse in my garden. It had fallen over, and when I tried to prop it up, the babies inside (??) started to chirp. Then the mother sat on a branch, just a few inches from my head and chewed me out! I felt so bad.

We have a husband and wife pair that have been at our house for a few years. They have been in our house more times than we can remember. We keep our doors open on nice days and they will come in as they please. We call them our landlords, because it feels like they want us to move out, so they can move in.
Once they even started bringing in pine straw and started to make a nest in a bowl I had on top of our fridge.
They’re very bossy but they are also our favorites.

They seem to like close proximity to humans, and we have had them nest in hanging baskets on the porch, unused watering cans, atop electrical meter boxes, and in the entrance of defunct PVC drainage pipes several feet above the ground. They are quirky, chirpy, and delightful!

Several years ago, we had flower pots with marigolds placed on our deck rail. A Carolina wren pair made their nest in one of the pots and successfully hatched their brood. At first after the eggs hatched, the parents would not bring food to the babies if I was out on the deck. However, after a few days, the internal signal to feed their young overrode their fear of me. They would go back and forth into the marigolds even when I was standing just a few feet away. It was a fascinating procedure to watch and they successfully fledged three young.

If you live in the Eastern U.S. or in the Deep South, you’ll most likely spot one, or hear them sing. Start with attracting them with foods that Carolina Wrens like, like mealworms, peanuts, suet, or sunflower seeds. Or, take binoculars and something to visually record and find a park or wildlife reserve in the Carolina Wren’s range if Carolina Wrens are not in your area, and go from there. Hope you get a chance to see one and happy birding! 🐦

When they look chubby, that turns the cuteness factor up to 11. 🥰 That’s so sweet that you got to see a Wren family two years in a row. By the way, I love your profile picture. A very cute painting of a very cute bird. ☺️🐦😍

Song Sparrows are another bird that’s really cute and have one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and are also very underrated.

I'm very familiar with this cute little plump bird. I learned that they were once migratory here in CT, but most likely due to the increase in warm winters, they've become residents. I hear them and see them in 3 primary habitats, which include residential areas with trees, bushes, and scrub, dense forests, and open woods with brush and scrub. They are the only song bird that sings year round over here. A few different versions of their song I hear very often include the classic "tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle", "cheese burger, cheese burger, cheese burger", "fig-a-ro, fig-a-ro, fig-a-ro", and "pee-ka-chu, pee-ka-chu, pee-ka-chu". They're one of my favorite birds to listen to and watch singing.

One of my favorite birds here in Maryland. I had a pair nest in my garage last season and oh boy did the fledglings have trouble getting out bc of the cobweb’s and messiness of it. I had to help 3 of them get out. I was just glad I was there and nothing horrible happened. I cleaned it up nicely for this year so it doesn’t happen again. Hopefully they will be back. I see them often all year round in my yard and at the feeders so I feel blessed by that.

So accurate! We have some who live nearby and often nest on the porch. I finally built them a nest box last year after evicting them from a cabinet, our grill, and a cooler bag left to air out. They had been reusing the eastern Phoebe nest in previous years. This year, they snuck a nest into a bag of pine shavings we have for our chickens and got an egg in there before we could discourage the location. Waiting to see what happens with that, as she’s not incubating yet. When the family asks if a bird was a wren, I ask if they saw a tiny yet enthusiastic brown checkmark. Thanks for the video that shares so much more information beyond my own observations!

You can hear them clearly even with doors and windows closed. They’ve made nests in plants, shoe boxes, porch curtains, etc. I have several bird houses hanging from the porches out of direct weather, but they nest where they want. Food is supplied all year round for all the birds here. And I look forward to hummingbirds returning. I’m starting to think word has gotten around that my place is a sanctuary for wildlife, lol. Sometimes they nest on a shelf in a box, on a hanging ladder, or inside a plastic Halloween pumpkin. The male sings LOUDLY in the front yard then flies to the backyard and sings again. So cheerful! I’m so happy that you made a video of one of my favorite birds! 😀 For the first time, I saw Carolina Wrens courtship feeding this morning with suet nuggets I put out for the Eastern Bluebirds. So adorable! 🥰 I hope I get a video recording of them doing it again one of these days. Learning that they mate for life makes what I saw even more adorable! 😊 I love that they’re called “Teapot Birds”, and I loved seeing the footage of the Carolina Wren foraging through the leaf litter, and the cute Wren family at 4:56. ☺️😍 Also, it’s so cool that Carolina Wrens have an extension built to their nest that’s equivalent to a porch or ramp. Plus, I also loved seeing the Wren parents feeding the nestlings being accompanied by wholesome country music near the end. Carolina Wrens have a rugged industrious spirit to them that resembles country living. Kudos to Birds Walking Down for the awesome footage! 👍 I hope I get another chance to see a nest and a successful brood from these “Teapot Birds”. 🫖 Most, if not all Wren species in general are cute and fascinating, just like you said. Thanks for sharing, Lesley, and happy spring birding to you, too! 🐦🐤🐣🐥🌸🌱🍃

I had the joy of a pair of these cute little birds nesting in a birdhouse I had set on a shelf by my patio. Intending to install the house in a tree in the yard, they had taken advantage of my procrastination and moved in! I also had the rare experience of watching the juveniles fledge the nest one afternoon, 4 in all. The parents sat on the chain link fence a few feet from the bird house, calling to their offspring until all were out. It was a memorable day!
