Two males fighting for territory landed in my lap while I was kneeling to plant onions last spring. It was so ferocious they didn't even register where they were, small but mighty!
My Dying Father was sitting in the back yard reading the Bible , and a Willie wag tail Landed on his hand , stayed for 30 seconds before flying off . he thought it was Great .
No they are not! They are brutal to other bird species, especially during nesting. I fully understand the nature of things and their place in an ecosystem.
Please think and do a tiny bit of research before you start calling things precious. They have a place in the ecosystem, but they are anything but precious.
My dad had a wren nest for several years in his workshop. She decided that his box of nails was exactly the right size for her nest. Dad picked it up to get some nails and there was this tiny bird looking back at him, utterly fearless.
They are definitely fearless 😂 we have one living out front and out back, they yeII at each other every morning, at least when they're not yelling at us. 😅 They are aIways yelling at us over some injustice or other 🤣👍 My son was just getting scolded for working on the car, he bought me the birdhouse one of them Iives in 🤭 They're such tiny fearless birds, I adore them. The one out back, wiII give me heII if I look out the window pane in the door at it hahaha And then it moves a few feet away and continues to yell while I'm on the porch. Lol they're awesome.
f they like your food, even in winter, they will chirp while eating. In the cold too. Love them. Had one that pecked on my window to remind me to put more food in the feeder. Im a retired alpha male commercial pilot and biker. but i love the sound of American Songbirds. Great sounds.. Better than Rap Music for sure.
Yes! I am always thrilled when the wrens take up residency in their wren house. Sadly, they never stay long enough for me. They have the most unique chortle-like song. And heaven help anyone that gets within 15 feet of their nest! 😂 Very feisty.
A mother bird wren made a nest in our out-houses soffit boards. We documented her for a few weeks and fed her mealworms out of cat bowl. We named her tinkerbel and she revisits frequently!
I have a female that’s been around my house for five years now as she has had her nest from the back deck to the front porch to my old well pump in the flower bed as she is a beautiful little stinker sometimes because when ever I’m out she always finds me an will sit in the trees or on the deck railing an chat up a storm, it’s funny how she is with me but not my hubby. Lol I’ve named her Rose as she loves eating the little green bugs off my rosé bushes for me ☺️ My friend stopped by an my hubby told her I was out back chatting with Rose and she goes who’s Rose! 😳😆🤣 Ha Ha
@@southerncharm693 I love how this bird can exist in our lives for 5 minutes and we give them names that we remember and greet them with whenever we see them. This was a year ago and we still see tinkerbell. I'm not much of a bird guy but wrens are so cute.
Yes, the wren and the meadowlark are my two favorite birds. What beautiful songs they both have. We usually get a nesting pair of wrens each spring, 😊 but then they leave. 😕 And the meadowlark I only hear when I am on back roads traveling in Nebraska. They are always on the fences in extremely wide open places. Such an amazing clarity to their song. It seems it mirrors the expansiveness around them.
I have a family of Carolina wrens nesting in a hanging resin birdhouse shaped like a fire helmet (I’m a volunteer), and I’ve had them nesting in other parts of my backyard over the years. Sometimes they take over a bluebird house, sometimes they nest in one of the hanging birdhouses, and one memorable year they chose a wooden flower box I had under my potting table on the deck. I hadn’t even known they were there until I was planting spring flowers in the pots on my deck and several juvenile wrens came hopping right up to me and watched what I was doing. Those cute little guys had absolutely no fear!
Another interesting bit for you is that many wrens share communal roosting sites in winter. Unused nest boxes can be packed solid with wrens so don’t take them down after nesting is finished.
Yes, I did intend on putting this in the video but managed to miss that bit some how. I remember once finding a communal roost inside a wooden clock in an abandoned house. About 10 wrens flew out of it.
Wrens are so fascinating, when i first heard their bird call, i was like that is so loud considering the tiny size of such a marvellous little bird. i am always happy when i manage to see them. awesome video Liam, packed with some great information .

I wonder if that's what I have.?! Very small, sings it's little heart out. I have a 'decorative' bird house hanging out and lo & behold something nested in it. Had babies.. Have babies again this yr.
We currently have a pair in one of our potted plants in the carport. Wrens have nested somewhere in our carport or storage room for years. We are in America, nice to hear about their habits across the pond. Have a great day.
I'd not seen a wren in the garden for years, then last year one perched on a branch next to my head while I was watering the garden. Stayed a while watching me, then off, beautiful ❤
There are plenty of wrens in Australia, too. At my place there are numerous Superb Blue wrens and they are extremely busy and cheerful little birds, even becoming so used to my presence that they will come right up to me in search of bread crumbs and such around my feet when I am sitting on the porch.
Love Wrens. Got a bunch of them around my place. They nest all over the place. One has a nest now in a small bucket on my back porch. Another poor little guy tried to make a nest on the back eave of my new chicken coop but the ledge wouldn't hold the material. There was enough moss laying on the ground to fill at least a 13 gallon trash can. I'm going to add a block that will fix that for them today when I'm there to add another roosting bar in the coop. Carolina Wrens we have here in north Georgia. Always cheers me up to watch them point their beaks to the heavens and sing to the Angels! Such a big voice from such a tiny little bird!
Happy wren lover in America. Wrens are notorious for daring into garages, homes, nesting in mail and newspaper boxes, tool sheds. Very opportunistic. They love to hunt in shrubs and brush piles. Sweet singers and bold. A most favorite bird.
Thanks for this video. I always enjoy your videos, your enthusiasm and enjoyment of subject really shows through and makes each one a pleasure to watch.
Wow! So many species in America and only one in the Old world. Perfect opportunity to predict and study future sudivision in subspecies and species. Great video !
Thank you for this. I had a wren build a next in my Christmas cactus on the front porch. I was blessed to see all 5 eggs leave the nest from my window, So sweet. A pair of wrens returned this May to the same cactus plant, started busily building their nest. So sad to say that I made the mistake of moving the plant about an inch. It startled the bird sitting very close by, and they haven’t returned since. Makes my heart so sad that I did this…
Where I live in North Carolina (U.S.A.) we have Carolina Wrens. I have been feeding all my wild backyard birds for over 20 years now. I always like to see my little Carolina Wrens. I have one Wren that almost every day sits on my BBQ grill and melodiously sings so beautifully. I have even taken video of him singing. A few weeks ago some Carolina Wrens found their way into my husbands workshop. They built a nest. We thought they only had one baby in the workshop. But, the next day I actually discovered four fledglings trying to find their way out of the workshop. So, I helped all the babies get out of the building. I don't know if they all survived once they got out, but at least they had a chance (once they got out of the building). But, every day I enjoy seeing my Wrens fly to the bird feeder for roasted unsalted peanut chips...which they love!!! Then they fly onto my back deck to break up the peanut chip and eat it. They truly are such adorable little birds...even when I walk past them and they loudly scold me...I still love them!
I live on the edge of a dry creek in the midwest US. I often sleep with my window open and in the morning am awakened by the song of the wrens. It is entertaining watching them squabble over nests.
We love our Wrens! We have been hosts for the last 3 years, for new babies. They use our garage, a lot! It always makes me nervous because we have to make sure someone is at home, all of the time. Plus, someone has to get up early ( 5AM) to open the door. Last spring they gave me a break. They dug out one of my Greenstalk planters and made nests. 😆They are great for the garden, because, they are often seen popping in and out of the plants cleaning up the bugs.
We have 2 nest boxes in the back yard. Either chickadees or house wrens use them each summer. Love both but the chickadees will always be my favorite, but not by much. We also have 5 feeders and one suet station all with different seeds. Seems like sunflower hearts are preferred by gold and house finches. When chickadee moms and/or dads bring their chicks to show them where to get lunch, and they were born and raised in our nest box it can’t get any better. So much joy and happiness. Only 30 years ago we didn’t even notice but holy smokes who knew? It’s an older people thing so thank you very much ! In mid May, we live in south central Minnesota, the summer migration is in full swing. They began stopping about 5 years ago and it’s been an annual event. Goldfinches, indigo buntings, rose breasted grosbeaks, Baltimore orioles, white throated and white crowned and Harris sparrows. Just in May we put out orange halves and grape jelly for the orioles. For 2-5 days it’s a mad house but the highlight of our bird watching for the entire year. Some birds make one visit and gone. The first year I had my bird book out to try to identify about half a dozen of mid size yellow birds with thick beaks. Ground feeders they were and “Holy cow!” Evening Grosbeaks and what a surprise. They’ve never returned. The house wrens eat insects and little green caterpillars and sing, sing, sing. Yep birds are for us old timers, and we’ll keep them.
I have wrens nesting in my garden most years. Their nests are really lovely and are usually nestled in the Ivy around my cherry tree but have even been inside my previous years runner bean canes.
We made a Scare Crow for our vegetable garden. In the pocket of the Scarecrows Coveralls. Wrens made a nest. And hatched little ones. Such a pretty song they sing. Thank you for this information.
My family had some Wren's nest on our screened in back porch this summer. The babies are absolutely adorable, and mom and dad are actually rather understanding about us needing to walk past them!
I got the Cornell Lab Merlin Bird ID app today and its so good. I used it to sound ID a bird i heard, and it was a wren. When i played the in-built sounds/calls to double check that it was actually a wren, it attracted it to the garden, where i was able to photograph it. So that's the first time ive actually seen one! It was pretty amazing.
Fascinating. Thank you Liam. I haven't seen a wren for years & spend a lot of my time in the countryside & have lots of birds nesting in my garden where I feed them.
Loved your video Liam. What a beautiful song the wren has. That male would have had to work his tail off with four families to support Thank you very much for a great informative video ❤❤
Thank you! There's a little one that comes to my porch several times per day, and I love it. It darts around and climbs the walls and eats suet. Adorable! I thought it was a chipping sparrow because of the white "eyebrows." 😊
In southern New England all you need is a bird house and House Wrens will move into it. We also have the Carolina Wren, who has nested in a box of rags in my garage or in a hanging flowerpot. They have no problem with people close by.
You can always rely a wren to take up home if you have any sort of outbuildings or sheds where they can gain access, they often build their nest in the most unexpected of places.
A lot of noise from a little bird. Cheers Liam, the St Kilda wren is an interesting guy, totally endemic to the island and is a little larger than its mainland cousins 😊
@@angr3819 glad to be of help, it really is an amazing place, I’ve always dreamed of getting there one day. It also has one of the largest breeding colonies of northern gannets in the world not to mention the puffins and fulmars. Also there is an endemic field mouse which is also larger than the mainland mice, the Soay sheep as well, quite an incredible place really
@@v.dargain1678 It's not there now a bloody magpie attacked the tree trying to get the nest, I was gutted, and haven't seen it since but we have about 25 baby house martins bouncing around the garden, it's been so funny watching them learn things. They are coming really close to feed now. We also saw a sparrow hawk yesterday but I chased it. I love the birds coming into the garden, always have,
We have Cactus Wrens here in Arizona. They are very noisy gregarious birds that have been nesting in our back porch rafters. Nothing is safe from them. They dig up our potted plants and pester our dogs. All in all, they are fun to have around. 😊
I live in Texas and it sure gets hot here, one time my pet wren took a bath in a melted ice cube in the palm of my hand which l held close to my body and it had such a good time doing it. As tiny as they are it sure amazes me how smart they are.

For me, the wren is the most adorable little bird!!!!
They are brilliant little characters and their song sounds like it belongs to something far more exotic!

For their size they must be the loudest.

I still have a farthing with a picture of a wren on it that I've had since I was a child. That's one quarter of an old penny, pre decimalisation.
Same here, Michael. 240 old pennies to an old £, times 4 = 960 farthings. Now that was good value, Wren-wise at least!

We here in Central Texas enjoy these awesome bird’s song. Loud, and beautiful. Love them.
Thank you! There's a little one that comes to my porch several times per day, and I love it. It darts around and climbs the walls and eats suet. Adorable! I thought it was a chipping sparrow because of the white "eyebrows." 😊
I love them so much ❤ Such cute little fluffballs of joy ❤❤❤
In southern New England all you need is a bird house and House Wrens will move into it. We also have the Carolina Wren, who has nested in a box of rags in my garage or in a hanging flowerpot. They have no problem with people close by.
So beautiful,we are so lucky to have them.lovely channel.
Thank you!
You can always rely a wren to take up home if you have any sort of outbuildings or sheds where they can gain access, they often build their nest in the most unexpected of places.
Beautiful little bird Troglodytes, they might be small but their song is loud !
Many thanks 👍.
A lot of noise from a little bird. Cheers Liam, the St Kilda wren is an interesting guy, totally endemic to the island and is a little larger than its mainland cousins 😊
Thank you for mentioning. Appreciated.
I have one nesting in my pompom tree right now, it's brilliant watching them
I live near a river and see snd hear Marsh Wrens a lot .
I live in America and my absolute favorite bird is the Carolina Wren. They nest all around our house. Thank you for the video.
Very good .
Thank you!
I live in Texas and it sure gets hot here, one time my pet wren took a bath in a melted ice cube in the palm of my hand which l held close to my body and it had such a good time doing it. As tiny as they are it sure amazes me how smart they are.
Thanks. I've never knowingly seen a wren but I've heard them a lot. Gorgeous song.
My little favorite 💗
