THG didn’t give Car Dealers their Bad Reputation. For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED it by being the masters of predatory selling. They stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and often do. While the business has had record setting profits, Dealers never stop telling Car Buyers “We’re losing money!” That’s the bed Car Dealers custom built for themselves. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. Thought I was doing everything right and that was only 2 weeks ago and I just saw your 1st video yesterday now I know I messed up big time and I am not in the position to be able to mess up right now. Do I have any kind of recourse whatsoever? I've already bought the car but they haven't come and got my trade yet I was giving them my old S UV and they were supposed to come pick it up and they never have. Thank you for all your information I know at least next time I will have a lot better deal for sure this time I think I'm pretty much screwed.
Watching all his videos has made me realize how much I’ve been screwed by dealers
Nicholas Scheetz - sane here!! Got swindled but that was result of My Ignorance
I'd venture to say the vast majority of people watching this video would be in the same club.
I got my card used at a salvage auction but looking at these videos makes me realize how much the original buyer probably got screwed over when they bought the car. Because my car has all the gizmos and gadgets for a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder.
I got an education on car dealers at an early age. My grandmother was kind of financial whiz, though on paper you wouldn't think so. When they went to buy a new car, they considered trading in their 59 Chevy...this was in 1965, well she quickly ran the numbers in her head, and figured out she was paying the dealership to take the old car. So she sold it privately then bought the new car, mostly cash, If I recall I think they had to pay a little on it for about a year, but she got her own load at the bank. In those days she could go to either of the town's two major banks and get a loan just on her signature alone. (one day one of the banks changed that policy, so she promptly withdrew her CDs and all to the tune of about 50 k and took them across the street to the other bank.) That bank never asked her for more than a signature, even when the policy changed for most people, not for her. They knew where their bread was buttered... anyway on with the story. In 1972 the 65 was shot, so they went to the same dealer in a larger city where they had always shopped before... however the ownership had changed hands. They wanted a luggage rack on top, mostly for a place to put our fishing poles when we all went fishing. The dealer didn't have that in stock, but sold it to her anyway, telling her she'd have to come back to have it installed. A couple weeks later the dealership called, and she went to get it installed. Well they sat there all day waiting for it to be installed, come to find out the one they had simply did not fit. So grandma asked for the price of it back, and the dealer would not refund it. So she slapped his face, as he was following her out, she turned and slapped his face once again, in front of all his employees. She never did get her hundred out of him, but the damn fool lost any future business and got his face slapped for all to see as well. what was he going to do, call the cops on an old lady? Granpa bought an over the counter rack, modified it to fit our rods and reels perfectly, and that was that. Next time she wanted a new vehicle, she went to the local Ford place. she financed it at first, from the bank, decided she didn't like having the payments then went and paid it off in one lump.
What a wonderful adventure, all in a comment! Thanks!
I have been selling vehicles for over 40 years,,,this guy knows his stuff.
I have no clue why RUclips recommended it to me, but I’ve been watching this stuff for an hour now. I’m not even about to buy a car
YT thinks your current car sucks
same here, I think it's just because I love learning some knowledge about the whole automotive industry processes. But it will definitely help me when I go to buy one next.
lol, me too
You or your family / friends will be at some point though and now you’re in a good spot
Hahahaha. Same question here.
I’m not even trying to buy a car and I watched this
Me too. But now I know where to get good info when I finally do. My car is a 2012 & I love it. No plans to update.
Same

I have one on the lot right now for a discerning guy like you. Been saving it but hurry, I can't sit on it forever.
How do I get a dealership to start their price at the Invoice MSRP and not the Dealer MSRP?
The single biggest reason I keep a car for so long is that I dread visiting a dealer to replace it. Thanks for all of your great information. I'm taking notes. Thanks, Kevin.
Spot on. It's a terrible experience because you always think you got ripped off.
Dude make it a game. You are the customer. Never let anyone sell you something you don’t want. Easy to walk
Another reason why online car dealership models like Carvana, and Vroom are getting so much business. I also do not like buying from a dealership. But it's like going to the doctor, you have to go but don't really want to due to the knowledge of what is in store for you.
One of these days I’m gonna replace my 2001 Toyota….
…nah!
@@steviesevieria1868 I traded my 2003 Honda accord in a few years back. Wish now that I would have kept it. These new cars look nice, but cost so much more to maintain.
You should definitely continue doing this. I’m a single mom who owns a ticking time bomb for a car. I almost got pressured in to a car I could not afford a few months ago because I didn’t want to end up on the side of the road. Thank God it didn’t happen. With the information you’re giving I’m learning exactly how to handle those sneaky car salesmen. I am glad to have found this channel! Thanks for all you do!
Excellent story. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes to you.
I hope you found a good deal and car. I too am learning so much from him. I was in a dealership a few weeks ago and I was literally in tears. I couldn’t deal with them. They were way too much for me. I’m so glad I walked out. I am so much better informed and almost ready… not yet. These people are snakes.
Honestly man, God bless you for your insight. It's hard to believe that there is anyone out there who cares for the little guy. Such a kind heart. I will definitely recommend your channel to all my friends and associates.
I appreciate that. Very kind words!
Uh, what did Kevin just say in his video about personal recommendations? Just kidding.
I'm the worst challenge, even at 50k I'd still buy a slightly used, depreciated car over a new one.
Don't buy a car unless it's a 94' Celica. Scotty Kilmer.
Just got done watching his videos lol!!
@@maryahwyatt6564 You are a Smart person.

Scottys videos are great!
Kevin please continue to give light to those of us in darkness about car shopping.
I teach driver’s ed. I’ve taught for years not to buy 0% down, but you just helped me add reasons why. Keep the details coming.
Hey kevin, I sold cars for a few years. During my time, I resolved to be as honest as I could while protecting my own interests as a person trying to make a living. I have made some good friends out of a slew of previous customers and I always loved the products I was selling. I appreciate much of what you are trying to accomplish with your youtube channel. Should I ever get back into the business, I would direct my potential customers your way for an education before dealing with me, even if the unfortunate truth is that the majority of dealerships would fire me if they were to ever find out that I did that. I find that the friction between the stereotypical Sales person and the Stereotypical consumer does not need to be there. If everything is transparent and there is mutual respect, there should be no reason why both parties cannot win. That is always the way I saw things and I always did well for myself and my customers by believing that to be the case and acting on my belief.
I agree totally! I mean people that work at dealerships have bill and families and mortgages just like everyone else! Lying and be shady and deceptive makes it harder for upright salesman to earn a living!
But car dealerships will be losing out on all those fees.
@@Dmanderic1979 Yeah, who will support the dealership owner's deadbeat kids? :-)
I’d also say don’t finance the taxes and fees as well.
Kevin, for your viewers....
HEADLINE: Don't put blind Faith into Major Chain Dealerships Used Car Pre Sale Inspection Certifications. "...vehicles have passed rigorous inspection process...No Worries".
Our story.
We found a One owner, Florida 2011 Acura RL Advance / Tech pkg with 150k miles at our local AutoNation Acura. Condition 9/10 priced $8500. We also had every service record for the life of car. Not simply CarFax but the actual dealership service dept records with detailed notes. All Acura reccomended service had been done multiple times on time in addition to replacement of pumps, compressors, struts, electronics, interior and exterior trims - just about everything had been replaced short or a new engine and drivetrain. Car had gone thru AutoNation 125 pt pre-sale inspection and had new Micheline, brakes, rotors, filters, etc. Upon purchase we were issued a 5 day 250 mile money back guarantee.
I follow the age old rule Trust but Verify and completed an independent inspection at a reputable local Acura/Honda shop. The results:
1 Leaking oil from oil pump O ring seal
2 Leaking pinion gear seal at front transfer case.
Major component failures Visible upon inspection yet not corrected or even noted on 125 point inspection certification.
What's dissapointing is we love the car, invested time and effort and want the car to work. Granted - warranty clearly states None AS IS. But All the dealership advertising touts the wonderful purchase experience - no haggle, inspections before placed on lot and No Worries..."we've inspected, cleaned, adjusted and repaired every vehicle before you see it".
We hope this ends well and dealership does the right thing. Correct the issues and live up to their no worries promise. At a minimum make some proposal so we could Drive with Confidence - their headline for their 1 Price Used Vehicle program. Alas, they will likely just give me a refund under money back guarantee.
Will update as to final outcome.
This guy is like Scotty Kilmer they have something in common they are honest
Yeah, but Scotty Kilmer drives me crazy with his shouting.
Kilmer is a boomer idiot. Hunter is better than that.
Scotty Kilmer is way less educated in his craft then Kevin is. I don't trust 20% of the crap Scotty says.
Scotty Kilmer is an idiot.
@@ElkStirrinTheHoney Scotty is an experienced mechanic with about 50 years experience, but he's not a salesman. His advice is filtered on the mechanical aspects of the car. He tells you which cars to buy. Kevin is a negotiator, filtered on the sales and fees aspects. He tells you how to buy the car, once you decide on which one. I wouldn't ask Kevin for the best car to buy - even used vs. new. And, I wouldn't ask Scotty for the best negotiation techniques. However, both of them provide some overlapping advice that is completely consistent.
Hi Kevin, if you mentioned this in another video I must have missed it. When I go to a dealer to price a vehicle and they ask me if I have a trade-in I initially tell them "NO". If you initially tell the dealer you want to trade in your vehicle they will give you a bogus inflated trade-in offer so you will think you are getting a really good offer. Then when the dealer configures the price for the vehicle you are looking at they will increase that purchase price to cover their loss for inflating their trade-in offer.
If you want a true trade-in offer wait until the dealer gives you the final total price for the vehicle you are interested in and then tell them that you changed your mind and would like the dealer to make you a trade-in offer on your vehicle. Doing this will prevent the dealer from increasing the purchase price to cover a bogus inflated trade-in offer which should get you a trade-in offer based on the actual value of your vehicle. And, you will probably realize you should sell your old vehicle yourself.
I am in the David Ramsey camp... I was debt free before I even heard of him.
I live Dave Ramsey rules.
Me too and still no Debt
Some may accept this, and some won't.
Did you know that being debt free is Biblical, and the will of God for everyone? "...owe no one anything, except to love one another...' Rom 13:8. God is big about keeping your word and paying off your debt to others. Having debt was the biggest reason people went into bondage, or was placed into slavery.
@@danielwilkinson1024 you’re on the phone to God? You must be really special…
You are providing a great service here. I spent over 30 years in the auto business as a mechanic, service advisor, service manager, auto tech instructor, salesman (only 6 months) and in semi-retirement as a flooring auditor. I've seen several of your videos and haven't found any bad information. Very well done, sir! I'll refer you to friends.
Thanks, Lynn! Your comments are much appreciated!
Yes, I totally agree with you!! After doing my homework. I drove over a local dealership. My salesperson seemed like an honest person. His shark teeth finally showed midway. I was prepared when it was time for the trade-in. I stood firm on the price of my car. The salesperson calls his manager. I remained stout during his negotiating skills. He then calls the GM. After an eye to eye shoot-out!! . He gave me what I wanted for my trade-in. The real kicker is when I sat down with the Financial Shark. The prior negotiating documents(salesperson) were carefully hidden under a stack of papers. He then printed the contract. Totally wrong. I showed him the original salesperson copy of the deal. He was surprised at first, Then collected himself and found the salesperson copy . Finally... THE DEAL!!! Always be in control the moment you walk into a shark tank Do not let your guard down!
I have fallen down the RUclips rabbit hole. I'm isolated and cannot shut off Kevin. I have watched six videos tonight. I can't wait for the local dealer to open. I have no reason to buy a car but going to go there and put all these to practice just to see how spot on Kevin is. Thanks Kevin.
Lol. Good experience.
"LYING TO PEOPLE IS MY JOB!"!
I work for the electric company and there were a bunch of tires piled in front of the meter . A super friendly car salesman did not see my company Van and asked me if he could help me I said please move these tire so I can change the meter. Is reply was classic he said " My job is not to move tires ,my job is to lie to people"
Found this on RUclips as I was googling reviews of cars I’m thinking about buying. Thank you keep up the good work!

Once again, Thank you Kevin for your honest information. I recently experienced exactly the same confusion over dealer reviews. I found a dealer that was absolutely terrible, but it had almost a 5 star rating on dealer review. I didn't know who to believe after that. Thanks for the yelp suggestion. And yes I have meet the sharks and the salesperson that thinks they own you. Even salespeople at different lots for the same dealership that have tried to steal me from their coworker even after I clearly stated that I was already working with someone else and gave them their name. Very cutthroat business! I just exercised my right to just get up and walked out , it really ticked them off.

Years ago, I bought a new Pontiac Grand Prix. Months before that, I went into that dealership just to look around. A salesman took time to talk with me, even though it was clear I wasn’t buying that day. When I was ready to buy, I went back to that dealership and asked for him. When I bought the car, he asked why I asked for him. I said months earlier, he didn’t just brush me off. He treated me with respect.
I spent several years as a consultant with dealerships. I've heard them discuss deals at every turn. You are spot on in what you are telling your viewers. Definitely keep it up.

How do I go about buying a car if I have never bought one before and don't even have a trade in, my budget is around 20k with a 20% down payment that I have already saved up. How do I get the best deal, how much should I ask off the sticker price , and should I buy used or new ? I'm not sure how to go about this ,I also don't have the best credit .any help would be appreciated, thank you for all of this useful information!

Great info. Thank you so much Kevin. Have always been intimidated every time I buy a vehicle. Keep sharing your great knowledge with us common people.
Please continue making these car buying videos. This info is GOLD!!!
This is the first of your videos I've seen. I think your questions to ask about the car history are priceless--this goes far beyond a simple CarFax report. (And who knows what never made it onto CarFax?)
After all I've learned in the past, buying based on emotion rather than reason, the most basic thing I intend to do next time is take a notebook and write down every claim the sales person makes--especially regarding money--and then demand to see those claims backed up on the sales contract. Every last one of them. Especially if it has to do with money.
Much as I hate this kind of adversarial situation, it is necessary: TRUST NO ONE. Always have an independent mechanic (not that guy at Goodyear or Jiffy Lube) inspect a car before your consider buying it. Ideally, you learn whether a car is worth buying or not, but you might gain information to use in bargaining as well.
Let me say it again. Trust. No. One.
Great information! More people need to see your videos and save themselves thousands of dollars! I've already told friends about your channel. Keep up the good work and thank you.
Thanks Kevin good advice and help for so many of us. Please do not stop.
When gathering documents before visiting a dealer, along with the 10-day payoff on an existing loan, get the per diem amount too.
Per Diem amount?
I'm not thinking of "a different car", I just need A CAR 😂Totalled my last one a few months ago (thank God the loan was almost paid off and the insurance was good enough to cover it) but the payout wasn't big enough even to buy a beater. Saving up right now so I can have some cash to make a decent purchase without getting screwed.
As some folks have suggested, look up Scotty Kilmer for info on which used cars to buy. He likes the Toyota Camry. And he recommends the 2011 or 2012 as solid cars, up to the 2017, because 4 Cyl, 2AR FE Engine is rock solid and the 6 speed AutoTransmission matches it. I don't know if the style matters, but I've seen cars for sale with under 30K miles ! And, you can pick up many of these Camrys for under $10K, and ALL are under $15K. In addition, you might get friendly with your insurance agent, and ask his opinion, from an insurance perspective, after you find a car you're interested in. Check CarGurus ... Good Luck.

Great info... Thanks for sharing
Never get financing from the dealer. Never trade in a car. You have 3 separate transactions and they should be handled separately.
Borrow money from a bank or credit union.
Buy your new car from a dealership.
Sell your old car to a private buyer or another dealership.
It forces the dealership to cut the four square model down to one square: price. They can't try to leverage anything against you, like the value of your trade-in or how little you have as a down payment.
- - Or keep your old car.
Or save up till you can afford the car new, CPO or used and pay cash!
@@snooooopycomehome, that's an even better option. The less leverage they have, the better.
But...I thought the point is you are supposed to sell your current car to a private person and NOT ANY dealership? They always undervalue your car to leave them room to sell it at a profit. Sell direct to the end user for the most $
@@gypsygirl9, that's ideal, but a lot of people don't have room for an extra car sitting around waiting for a buyer. And they need the car all the way up until they have a new one. Or they need the money from the sale in order to buy a newer car. Simply put, for a lot of people, the transactions need to happen on the same day. Sure, you might lose some value on it by selling to a dealer, but not a much as you would trading it in.
The older I get, the less patience I have with salesmen. I find it hard to even be polite anymore.
I get that. I have little patience
Fantastic info. I've been up all night watching your videos. I feel much more confident and ready to purchase my car now. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise .
Thank you for the information in your videos, I hope you continue to share your knowledge, and help people to avoid the rip offs.
re: reviews, I feel like this is like asking an 8 year-old to review his new red bicycle. Like the 8-yo doesn't know whether his parents got a good deal on the bike, whether they paid to have nitrogen in the tires, whether they put it on a credit crd at 25% interest...he just thinks "cool bike, 5 stars!"
Looks like at this point 73 car salesman have watched this! :)
Thanks appreciate your advice!!!
I'm hooked on these videos. It's amazing that sketchy car sales tactics are acceptable and backed by legislation. I was just in a wreck 2 days ago and waiting to hear if my car is fixable or totaled, so I'm watching these videos again to be prepared if I have to go car shopping next week.
Shoutout to Dave Ramsey.
Edit: Where do you get all these good looking girls?
Nice stream nice video stay away from the salesman like Stevie Richards though
Keep up the great videos! I just texted 6 friends to start watching and i will keep watching. I worked 5 yrs. for a Dealership as a Tow Truck Operator and thought I had learned a lot. I have been disabused of this erroneous belief. I am not in the market yet, but I plan on watching, re-watching, studying all these videos so that when I do I will be a smart buyer. side note....I pay cash, I have a shit credit score because I pay cash! Your video for Cash buyers was very educational, I would have made 1/2 dzn. or more mistakes had I not seen it first! Thank You.
Very informative Kevin. Thanks.
great video. my wife bought a car from a dealer and told me his name. when i went to the dealer and told him how much she paid he said he never sold a car for that price. maybe i'll stop by with bill of sale. scumbags.
Points that even 'smart' people would not know.
Knowledge is power, Keep posting videos. I'm planning to purchase my next car towards the end of 2021 so I will continue to watch. Thanks.
Kevin, I really hope viewers appreciate the free info you are putting up here, I seriously do, thank you for this.
